This place is great, the food is always so good and the hot and sour soup is a must ‍ We got their braised pork belly and fermented veggies and I think last time it was more tender. But the flavor was still really good

I love when the menu is so large that you just mark up the menu, or at least that's what we did! We were there as a large group (a table of 10). They sat us in the back. The dishes came out pretty quickly, but other than bringing out the food, the service was lacking. (It looked like there were only 2 servers for the entire restaurant... on a Friday night?!!) In any case, asking for glasses to pour water in because we were given a pitcher of water WITHOUT glasses seemed to throw off the server where he interrupted the conversation to ask how many glasses. Empty bowls for soup or rice, how many exactly? We started needing to order specifically, like "ten napkins". And to pay, we sought out the waiter on the floor to get the check since we won't see him come by. I only took off 1 star for lack of service because it could have been an off day. I think Shanghai Bun Dynasty had some tasty dishes. The 2 fish dishes we had were phenomenal! They were soft and tender inside and cooked perfectly. The tofu dish was made amazingly well. It was seasoned just right -- not too salty -- and it was delicate. The shrimp dish looked plain, but it was scrumptious. I think it's easy to overcook shrimp, but it had that perfect juicy bite every time. Service just could have been better. And also sticking a large group into the corner table with all the extra chairs (rather than moving out the extra chairs and pulling the table out a little) was no bueno. Little things matter. But I think Shanghai Bun Dynasty is worth another visit! I'll go in a small group next time.

Bun and Games A family-owned and run Shanghainese restaurant that's been in operation for over ten years (circa 2015) and features everyone's favorite dumpling: Xiao Long Bao (aka XLBs). They also used to operate the now-defunct CBI Kitchen in Milpitas a few years back. They're also a scratch-made operation, as all the food is prepared fresh in-house using authentic flavors and recipes. The Good: * The décor is gorgeous and very fancy. It's a great place for a celebratory family dinner or date night. * Dinner and a show where you can watch them making the dumplings in one of those food theater deals that a lot of Chinese places have. * Chinese Beers in a bottle for less than $5?! Yes, please! * Overall, it was a fairly inexpensive meal as we fed a family of six for less than $250 including tip. * Their XLBs are worth the hype, as they held together and were full of soupy goodness. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely up there. * Shanghai Stir-Fried Noodles was our everything. The bounce and thickness of the noodles were perfect, and flavors were perfectly balanced. It is worth noting that it does come with some kind of meat (pork?), but the menu doesn't state that, so if you're thinking it's a vegetarian-friendly dish, it's not. * Sautéed Diced Chicken with Chili Peppers was like the best popcorn chicken I've had. Crunchy, spicy, and had that nice tongue-tingling sensation from the Szechuan peppercorns. * Pan-fried Buns were also fantastic; nice crispy bottom and delicious well-seasoned pork filling. * Steamed Cabbage and Pork Dumplings were another hit. We were a little surprised they had a little soupy filling, as well. Normally they're just meat and veggies inside a wrapper, but we definitely enjoyed the broth as it helped them not be dried out. The Meh: * A very small outdoor dining area that consisted of two-tops. * Scallion Pancakes (one of our all-time favorites) were very good, albeit a little greasy for our liking. The cook on them was inconsistent at best, but they were smacking the next day after popping them in the air fryer. The Ugly: * Service was okay for the most part, but we felt largely ignored, which is fine, I guess. However, there were a few mishaps with wrong dishes coming out and some dishes not coming out at all. They seemed a little disorganized, like a place that had just opened, rather than a place that has been around for years. Conclusion: Fantastic Shanghainese cuisine in a gorgeous backdrop but with questionable service. 4.5*

An authentic Chinese restaurant in Cupertino is a dime a dozen, but it's quite rare to find a restaurant serving up traditional Shanghainese fare. Shanghai Bun Dynasty used to be Shanghai No 1, but it seems like they've rebranded and adjusted the menu a while back. The interior is rustic and quaint, perfect for dining with family and friends. From the entrance, you can see the workers hand kneading the dough for their bun/XLB dishes - it's great to see these kinda of things being made in-house! We ordered the Shanghainese-style Mandarin Fish (squirrel fish), Crab and Pork XLB, salted egg yolk tofu, and the braised duck. Everything tasted great, and we were surprised by how generous the portions were. My go-tos here have been the Squirrel Fish and the Duck and Bamboo Soup! Both are pretty hard to find dishes in regular Chinese restaurants. Definitely come prepared to share! We'll definitely be back when I'm back in the area!

First time trying out authentic Shanghai food at Cupertino. I really like the decor, it's not too traditional but brings you back to the olden days. The foods are well balanced, I ordered more and we finished everything. Just found out the Purple rice was a dessert but my companions enjoyed it brings a little korean Purple rice feels. We definitely enjoyed our meal and will return again.

Came here for lunch on a Friday around 11am. When we arrived there were only 1-2 other groups dining, but it took a while before anyone came to take our order. When they finally did, we were told we had to order online ourselves. It would've been nice if they had told us that right away instead of making us wait. Once we placed our order, though, the food came out surprisingly fast (around 10 minutes), even as the restaurant started getting busier. We ordered the Shanghai stir-fried noodles, braised pork belly with quail eggs, basil eggplant, tofu with crab roe, Jiangnan-style chicken, and rice. The standout dish for me was definitely the tofu with crab roe--I'm a huge tofu fan and the fish roe added so much flavor. So good! I also really enjoyed the noodles; they tasted fresh and homemade rather than store-bought. The eggplant was tasty too, although I wasn't a fan of the texture of the skin. My husband's favorite was the braised pork belly. The only dish we probably wouldn't order again was the chicken. Overall, once the ordering hiccup was out of the way, service was quick, the portions were generous, and the prices felt reasonable for the amount of food we got--especially for the Bay Area. We'd definitely come back and try more dishes.

We had the spicy wonton soup, the xiao long bao, and the pan-fried pork buns. The spicy wonton soup broth was mostly mild and tasted like chili oil without much depth, but the wontons themselves were juicy and flavorful. The pork filling was slightly sweet, and eating the wontons with the broth made the dish much more enjoyable. The pan-fried pork buns were a yum yum. They were soft with a crispy bottom, filled with juicy meat, and had a nice amount of soup inside. The xiao long bao were tasty as well. The wrappers were a little chewy, but the filling and overall flavor were still very good. There's music in the background and a dimmed surrounding. We were sat, given a pitcher of water, and ordered our food through the QR code. Even though we dined in, it was a self-service spot for our time here. Overall, we'd come back again.

We visited on a weekend around 11 a.m., just before the lunch rush. At the time, there was only one larger table already dining and another couple who were seated at the same time as us. The food itself was tasty, though some dishes were noticeably saltier than others. Salty enough to leave me feeling parched for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, the service did not match the quality of the food. Our dishes arrived at different times, and a few were forgotten altogether. It appeared that at least one of our missing items may have been served to tables that arrived after us. When my wife inquired about the missing dishes, there was no apology--just a brief response before the server walked away. At one point, a server misheard and delivered our final dish to a larger table. We could hear a staff member loudly reprimanding another server, which added to the chaotic atmosphere. Overall, the experience felt disorganized and stressful. I'm giving a lower rating based solely on the service, which significantly detracted from an otherwise decent meal. Additionally, the tip percentage is calculated on the grand total. Which left a larger tip than I wanted to give them.

The food came so slowly... including the news that one of our items was not available. Service was decent otherwise. Food was also good like it was last time. Price was a bit steep. Recommend the soup.

    Pan-fried Buns 6pcs - very doughy.. :/

TLDR: I hate to be the contrarian here, but this place is a such a terrible disappointment. Very disappointing food.. Out of the six dishes that we ordered, only the pea sprouts were any good. Pluses: Service was courteous. Nice Classic "Old Shanghai" vibe with dark polished furniture with red accents. XLB: 1.8/5 - juicy but the pork filling seemed off, and the outer skin like all of their steamed offerings were overcooked. Shanghai Pan Fried Buns 2/5 - we've tried these at a lot of places now, and sadly, the ones here come in dead last. And.. THIS is their signature dish!!! Juicy yes, but overly fatty juice. a good crust yes, but the doughy shell is much thicker and doughier than Shanghai Buns elsewhere. Too fatty, too much dough here. At best this is not my taste. Pork & Cabbage Dumplings: This usually is a no-brainer for any place to get right. But not here. Again, the dumplings are far too overcooked and not the right color anymore. (1.8/5) I've eaten these standard classic dishes at dozens of dumpling establishments but the food here just did not taste right to me. Verdict: The food here was such a disappointment. Not even close to being on point when there are so many other places that execute the same dishes at a much higher level. Shanghai Bun Dynasty - do better!

Nice Chinese decor. Extensive menu options. For xiao long bao, dumplings and wonton soups. The xiao long bao and pan fried bao are very juicy. The small and big wonton soups were also very good flavors. Friendly staff. You can also buy frozen items home to cook. Definitely worth it to come back and try other dishes.

Come for: sheng jian bao, xiao long bao Know that: the soy milk portions are BIG I came on a weekday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see no line. The clientele and staff tended to speak Mandarin though the staff can also speak English. The service was very nice and attentive. The restaurant ambiance is like stepping back in time to early 1900s Shanghai. Sheng jian bao was the highlight here. Crispy, juicy, and flavorful. The broth tended more towards the savory side as some places like it sweet. But the bottom was some of the crispiest I've ever had. Very good! Similarly, the xiao long bao was excellent as well. Thin wrapper, soupy filling. The broth was the aame as the sheng jian bao. Paired very well with the vinegar. I also had the soy milk, scallion oil noodles, and braised pork belly w/ quail. They were all fine but I didn't find them to be standouts. The soy milk was grainier than I'd like it to be. I'd probably order something else next time. Overall, very good dumpling spot! Would definitely visit if you love a savory soup dumpling or sheng jian bao.

Staff member was a bit confused about the yelp waitlist but luckily the place was only half full when I arrived for a weekday lunch. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Standout dishes were definitely their pan fried pork bun and xiao long bao! Both were served piping hot and filled with so much soup. I'm very satisfied.

The restaurant is a "family" place that is not fancy or upscale. You can bring kids, be loud, be casual. It's clean, but not TOO clean, if you know what I mean. I didn't knock off a star for that because it isn't classified under that type of venue. Shanghai Family Restaurant is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD! The best measurement of a good restaurant: when you are already planning your next visit before you're even done eating! I did this when I was eating their "lions head" meatball dish over rice.
