Great pan fried dumplings but it would've been nice to know they are temporarily closed before I drove almost an hour to get here!!! I went somewhere else where the dumplings sucked and was looking forward to these ones!

Classically 3.5 star If you subscribe to the 3.5 star theory, this is a good example. Fried pork buns are excellent - crispy and very juicy. We also tried the sour noodles, spare ribs, and wonton soup, all of which tasted authentic and def fresh. Everything else is typical of a hole in the wall restaurant. Looks run down, tables are rickety. staff is quick to serve you and also kick you out. But at the end of the day who cares if the food is good.

+ Pan Fried Pork Buns (生煎包) [4/5] I will be back to try the 生煎包 again -- I think I shot myself in the foot by waiting to eat these because the soup sunk into the crispy bottoms. Even lukewarm, these were filled with so much soup and meat! I think they would be great with some scallions sprinkled on top for some freshness. I got 24 pork buns for $44. Good price for the amount of food!

I haven't been back here for a long time! Always love their Pan Fried Pork Buns. They may not be the best looking buns, but don't judge a book by its cover. Each bun has the perfect amount of soup and meat that goes well with its crunchy bottom. Service is fast. The only thing that needs work is the ambiance. They badly need a renovation. They can easily fit more people if they just rearrange their stuff.

Went on a random friday morning. Service was eh, didn't feel welcomed when I walked in :/ When I pulled out the chair to sit down, I noticed it was sticky... Got the pan fried pork bun + the soup combo and jelly fish with marinated cucumber. The pan fried pork bun was pretty good, I'd give it a 9/10. However, the soup literally tastes like tap water with a bit of salt, not even exaggerating. The tofu thingy in the soup (idk the name for it) tastes undercooked. I would only recommend the pan fried pork bun here, nothing else is special.

Came for the sheng jian bao after seeing some great reviews and luckily we were not disappointed. The spot is super low-key and take out only. We made an order of sheng jian bao with an order of radish cakes as I was excited to try radish cakes after reminiscing of the amazing radish cakes I've had in Shanghai and both had great flavor! The sheng jian bao had a good thin skin with a slightly crispy bottom. The skin could have been better as it was a bit doughy on the bottom and could have been fried better. The filling however saved the overall dumpling with a good amount of meat, great seasoning and a ton of soup! The radish cakes had good flavor good as well but lacked the flakiness that I love in a pastry dough. Would come to pick up sheng jian bao when I have a craving but I do have spots that do it better (Special Noodle for example)

3.5 STARS IMO, a sign of great Sheng Jian Bao (SJB)? It squirts...far. Early on the pandemic, I ate SJB (pan-fried juicy pork buns) in the car and the juices squirted onto my windshield. IF I had dined in, it probably would have squirted into my dining companion's face. MONEY SHOT! Shanghai Flavor Shop, a hole-in-the-wall Shanghainese restaurant has been sitting in my bookmarks for years. After hitting up Sunright Tea Studio, I called to see how long the wait was for takeout and they said, 10 minutes so Shanghai Flavor Shop it is! M E N U Shanghainese fare; 1 page menu. They're best known for their SJB and noodles. Cc's accepted with $10 minimum. TAKEOUT ONLY. No dine-in. No delivery. Staff wore masks when customer facing. F O O D * 生煎包 Sheng Jian Bao: Pan-fried Pork Buns (6 pc - $9.75): https://bit.ly/3HPdacX ***1.5 orders shown. ***Remember to ask for black vinegar. I had to go back into the shop to ask for some. Based on the recent and mixed reviews, I think I missed their heydays. The SJB had an uneven thickness - the steamed white tops were thin but the golden brown, crunchy [inverted] bottoms were thick and doughy. The pork filling was savory and flavorful but small so there were large air pockets. Varying amounts of soup in each SJB. None squirted on my windshield so could be soupier. Also, could of been topped with more sesame seeds. The SJBs were by no means bad, they just weren't great. Current favs for SJB: Pan Fried Dumplings (Cupertino/SJ) and Dumpling Home (SF). S E R V I C E The staff were very nice and gracious for the business. Didn't experience the bad or rude service as others did. I was quoted 10 minutes and they were packing up my order when I arrived in 8 minutes. Always appreciate the speedy service...*ahem*, unlike nearby Old Town Shanghai that keeps tells you the SJB "is coming" and ends up taking over an hour...if it comes at all. A M B I A N C E Dingy, hole-in-the-wall with a table blocking the entry to the dining area. P A R K I N G Easy parking in the plaza. Overall, Shanghai Flavor Shop's SJB was just alright but hit the spot because I was hangry. 3.5 stars rounded up for the friendly and speedy service.

Shredded Pork & Noodle w/Green Onion Sauce ($9.75)- 3/5 stars. I wasn't able to find any pork, and hope they update this dish on the menu.

Eep.. I'm not sure what happened to Shanghai Flavor Shop. This used to be one of the top places in the South Bay to order Pan Fried Pork Buns, and I remember this being a great dish to order. Sadly, they weren't as good as I remembered; however, this could have been an off day since it was a Wednesday. I placed my order around 5pm, and it was only about a 10 minute wait at that time. I tried: -Pan Fried Pork Buns (6pcs/$8.75, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=1C1A4CJ-idazKg83OkJvtQ&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Not bad, but not great. The bottom of the pan fried pork buns were nice and crispy, and there was a little soup in the buns. However, the dough was too thick/bready on the bottom, and the meat filling was too small. The buns also could've been more flavorful. -Shredded Pork & Noodle w/Green Onion Sauce ($9.75, https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=DphsHUZmyAo6gf043B2R_g&userid=76vIFZcC7owykCBjMfGVXg): Again, not bad but not great. There was also no pork in these noodles, or none that I was able to find. The prices here were cheaper than other similar places, but the quality was also slightly lower than other places. Based on this experience, I'm not in a hurry to return, but would give their pan fried buns another try in the future. Parking in this plaza was easy since there were plenty of spots available.

2 must orders: the best sheng jian bao (pan fried soup buns) and scallion oil pork noodles. everything else is secondary and honestly not that good - i've tried the soup noodles and it was a hard pass. the cucumber jellyfish salad is a nice pairing to offset greasiness but nothing crazy. this place feels like a bay area chinese person secret. i was surprised to see so many reviews for this place because it feels like the ultimate hole in the wall spot - the tables are always a little sticky, the dining ware needs to be wiped down, there's literally only like 6 tables total in the restaurant. but the food is so fucking good!! and the owner is a nice chatty lady. +1 for that too.

THE #1 PAN FRIED PORK BUNS Seriously, the best 生煎包 you could ever get in South Bay. They're pipin' hot (so don't burn yourself) because they're cooked to perfection! The bottoms are fried till crispy, the skin not too thick nor too thin, the insides still tender with juices, and the meat so flavorful and tasty. 5/5 Ordered at the counter to-go and waited about 10 minutes. There is seating inside though it was relatively quiet when I went.

    Lisa Z.

Honestly the best go-to place in the Bay for scallion noodles and pan-fried dumplings. They're a hole-in-the-wall little to-go place that's been around the block for longer than I have, but no one can beat them at their own game. There isn't any sit-down but if you just get 1-2 orders of pan-fried dumplings and one order of scallion noodles your day will be made. Trust me.

Mushroom with Gluten Noodle - 4/5 The mushroom and gluten were well prepared, though the flavor was a bit on the mild side. The noodles were the thin type, probably just standard packaged noodles. Shanghai Style Fried Prawns - 3/5 There are two options: one with regular prawns, and one with river shrimp. We chose the river shrimp. The overall flavor was much milder than the authentic version--it lacked sweetness, and the dish didn't have the rich red and glossy look it usually should. Bean Curd with Vegetables - 5/5 This dish was a pleasant surprise, capturing the taste of spring--very light and refreshing. Lightly drizzled with sesame oil and chilled for a while, every bite felt fresh and cleansing, with a lingering aroma. Shanghai Veggie and Pork Rice Cake - 5/5 Highly recommended. The rice cakes were stir-fried to a perfect soft and chewy texture. The combination of vegetables and shredded pork brought out a deliciously savory flavor.
