I had heard good things on social media about this restaurant so I decided to give it a try. They offer take out and dine in, but no delivery, which was fine since I live relatively close. I called in a takeout order and they quoted 10-15 minutes. When I arrived about 17 minutes later it was waiting for me ready to go and piping hot! I ordered the egg drop soup, crab rangoons, and chicken broccoli entree. The egg drop soup seemed fresh, but it was very bland. It needed more flavor! The crab rangoons were the best part of the meal and were very tasty. The chicken and broccoli had a strange taste to the sauce. I assumed it was just me who didn't like it so I gave it to my mom, but she didn't like it either. The portion size was great. One entree could have lasted me 2-3 meals. I just wish we would have liked it! The hostess who greeted me, who was also my cashier, was very kind. I was in and out in two minutes. read more

My wife and I shared a couple lunch specials today. She had the happy family and it had lots of ingredients, beef, shrimp, pork and a plethora of veggies. I had the general tso's chicken. I really want to like this place. But, the consistency is lacking. Out of the few times I've ordered here it's been 50:50. Most times the portions are worth the money. However, I have had a few times when I was severely disappointed by the portion size to cost. As for taste, it's good most of the time. But, there are a few dishes which leave you wondering. The Orange Chicken for instance, exception of the orange slice, no hint of orange whatsoever. The Rangoons are good because they're fried and face it, everything fried is good. But, they are usually over saturated in oil and tend to be a little soggy. The staff is friendly and fast, they are abiding to COVID type service so mask up. This place was awesome. Came with the kids and they loved it. The portions were good and the price is good also. I would recommend it. It isn't the fanciest place but the food is awesome. Needing to order food on the road I luckily found this place that still takes phone takeout orders. I'm hating more and more when restaurants force you to order through certain apps. I got the pork dumplings and chicken Lomein and they both were spot on. The dumpling sauce had a light kick. The lomein was full of veggies, clearly white meat, and the sauce was light. Solid 3 stars. Good food! We came here for a quick meal with some family before an event and had an array of dishes. The Mongolian beef and chicken fried rice really stood out. I have been going to this restaurant for 20 years and always had good service and good food. Maybe today was an off day I D K. I went in about 1:15 PM on a Friday, was seated quickly. Hardly any customers in the restaurant. Maybe someone at one table. Anyway I was in somewhat of a rush as I only had about 30 minutes for lunch. When I went in there were several employees standing around. After sitting at a table for about 5 minutes and watching 2 employees start bussing the only two dirty tables, I ask if they had any wait staff or servers. I got a blank stare, and a "someone will be with you in a moment". By that time I felt as if I would be pushing it too close to my 30 minute window for lunch. It is sad as this place used to be too notch when Leo was there most times running the place. I told Devon about it on my way out, but did not have time to stay and eat and try to make it work. Moral of the story, give yourself plenty of time to eat there, even when they are not busy at all. I may give it another try in the future, but today they get a failing grade. read more

We tried Shanghai Express the first time as part of Waiters on Wheels and were happily surprised. The food was piping hot and yummy. We had dumplings, wonton and egg drop soup, ribs, happy family and sweet n sour chicken. Everything tasted great and was fresh. Looking forward to trying them again in the future. read more

This place is a Georgetown classic. Hefty portions and wonderful service. The rice is lackluster but don't let that stop you from enjoying their wonderful food. I almost always order the orange beef with fried rice. It is amazing every time and blows Panda Express out of the water. The price is higher, yet the portions are larger and the atmosphere less stressful. I've been eating Shanghai Express for well over 10 years, and it's rare to have a major complaint with them. My hubby and I ordered take out for the first time from here earlier this week. This is one of the closest Chinese restaurants to our house and it was good enough that we will definitely be back. I'm absolutely LOVE Chinese food and with all of the horribly incorrect reviews on Asian food in the Austin area, I'm thrilled when we come across somewhere that actually makes me happy we grabbed a to-go menu. What we ordered: egg rolls, crab rangoons, wonton soup, combination lo mein and moo goo gai pan. Cost: $24 Pretty much all of the food was delicious, albeit a tad bit skimpy for the entree prices. The two complaints we had: the wonton soup tasted like ginger water and while really good, the moo goo gai pan was the furthest thing from traditional moo goo gai pan I have ever seen. It had mounds of fresh mushrooms, zucchini and chicken, but instead of being in a clear chicken based sauce, it was in a thick brown garlic sauce. It was really good, just not what we ordered. We will definitely be back to try out their other offerings. (Side note: they serve their rice in the actual Chinese to-go boxes!) read more

First time eating here. We got the egg drop soup which was good but needed a touch of salt and a little warmer. The crispy noodles were very fresh and plenty of them. The fried dumplings were perfect. I got the chicken fried rice with an egg roll and they were both fresh and delicious! Wow! What a pleasant surprise for Saturday lunch. Tried this place due to previous Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. Got in quickly. Ordered the Triple Kung Pao lunch special. I've never had the option of ordering this before, let alone get chicken, beef and shrimp Kung Pao for under $7! I picked hot and sour soup and steamed rice to accompany the egg roll that came with the meal. The tea and soup came out immediately and were tasty. Shortly after I downed the soup, the Kung Pao arrived. The plate was full! The veggies were crisp, the sauce had a lot of flavor and was very hot. Almost scalded my tongue!! Lots of meat, and the shrimp were nice and large. The egg roll was a nice addition. I'm not in the Georgetown area during lunchtime often, but this is definitely a go-to place when I am. read more

Our family recently moved to Georgetown 2 years ago. Being that we are Chinese ourselves, it is difficult to find a decent Chinese restaurant in the area. My wife and I truly enjoy eating at this restaurant. Although it is not the best Chinese food I have ever eaten, I can definitely say that it is consistent, good quality and honest portions. It is a family fun business and the owner seems like a pretty good guy. When we go to Shanghai Express, we always order egg fu young and moo shoo. The staff clearly wants everyone out of there at 230p so "THEY" can all sit and have their lunches! What is this all about?? It's a bit rude. I don't believe they even deserve 1 star for their services. I went out to lunch with my co-workers and I have a service dog. Immediately upon walking in, the hostess nodded her head and told me that service dogs were not allowed. She was fully vested and identifiable as a service dog and on a leash. The hostess turned her head and said if I had a problem to talk to the manager. The manager was nowhere in sight. So I walked out. I will never never eat there! Also they messed up the tickets for 2 purchases & acted like it was no big deal. ( It is a big deal when you have my money not applied correctly.) I always judge a place by its General Tso chicken and theirs is good. Not a ton of breading and a good taste. Could be a bit spicier though. I decided to order a large won ton soup and I am quite a bit disappointed. The taste is good, the problem is the portion size. It came in a medium size styrofoam soda cup. We have been here a few times now, and this place is consistently good. We phone in our order for pick up, and our order is always ready very quickly. Everything is made fresh to when you order it. From what I can see the restaurant is very clean, and a nice place to stay and have a meal. Everyone I have encountered is always super friendly- something I have definitely become accustomed to everywhere here in Georgetown. Their menu has a wonderful selection of all types of meats, seafood, and some vegetarian options. This is our favorite Chinese food place in town; even our little one loves it.
