I came here for lunch, i was surprised how much seating that they had, it looks smaller from the out side. I ordered the Mongolian Beef with vegetable chow mein. They served some white soup with corn first, it was quite good. The Mongolian beef arrived and it had quite a bit of sauce, almost looked like gravy. For Mongolian beef, i would give it a 6.5 out of ten. It was pretty tasty, not a lot of beef, no bell or red peppers, a little heat came on about the time I was finishing. The chow mein was good. A very strong 3 1/2 stars. I saw these guys were on GrubHub, so I decided to give them a try. I ordered three items. The Popo plate, the wor wonton soup, and the Happy family. The least successful of the dishes had to be the Popo plate. While everything was very good tasting, I thought that the spareribs and the fried prawns were a bit chewy. The spring roll was tasty, but there was too much five spice in it for my personal taste. I could definitely taste the cinnamon, and it ate a bit too sweet for me. Everything else, especially those chicken wings were great. The wor wonton soup, was the best. The broth was absolutely savory, the wontons were just the right texture, and the filling was delicious, and between all of the proteins, and all of the veggies, there were a lot of "goodies" in it. The Happy family was also pretty good. The sauce was deep and savory, and there were also a lot of goodies in it. The veggies were a good texture, but I didn't get any "mixed seafood." all I got were a couple of small pieces of shrimp. Also, just for information, the dish does not come with rice. That's separate. I didn't expect there to be, so I just made my own. For what I paid, and not getting very much seafood, I thought that the price was a bit high for that specific, Dish, although it did taste well. I've been going here since my preteens especially since I attended Sutter Middle School, right in the neighborhood, down the street. I enjoy the egg flower soup and vegetables delight. Dining in is a good experience and placing orders for pick up is a breeze. I like all of the decor inside. They do a great job keeping this restaurant clean and organized. This is a small parking lot so I do recommend parking on the street and walking up if you can. The people who work here are kind and provide good portions of food to their customers. read more

I've dined at Shanghai Garden many years ago. I had forgotten that the quality of the food is good. I ordered from Door Dash the hot and sour soup and the dry style beef chow fun. The soup was really good with the perfect balance of spicy and sour. Most places use too much vinegar. I could taste the "wok hei" in the beef chow fun that definitely satisfied my craving. The is cozy Chinese restaurant in East Sac across McKinley Park. I've been here for both dine-in and take out. The restaurant is clean and has plenty of seating for a large group if needed. Doesn't take long to be seated or have your order taken. The staff have been nice and the food has been tasty. Recently I got the Fish with Salt and Pepper to go and in my opinion you can get more food for a cheaper price at other places. I don't think this restaurant is bad at all or "not worth it", I just think if you are willing to go a bit further to a different restaurant you can get a better deal. I'd suggest checking them out. Parked across the street as we were signing documents that evening - getting out of the car we could smell the delicious aroma of so many different spices coming together. It was definitely a no-brainer deciding to eat dinner here. The food did not disappoint! Pictured is the beef chow fun, egg drop soup, honey walnut shrimp, and shrimp fried rice. Everything was delicious!!! Cooked with love! So flavorful, not oily and well portioned. Staff was friendly! Had a full house and line of to-go orders. Wow I don't know who does there buying of produce , but I don't understand how you can have Asparagus on your main menu and then never have it or say it's out of season. Their Asparagus Beef is on their daily menu so one would think it would be served as a regular item. Nothing states that it's seasonal. I told them I could go down to Safeway and get them all the asparagus they need. This use to be my go to place for Chinese food. But no more. My place of choice is now The Wok on Arden and Morris. Used to come here and really enjoyed their food and service. We decided to revisit since it's been quite some time. So disappointed at the lack of customer service and attention. We wanted in line as people ahead of us were being seated. We were only a party of 2. We noticed a table for 2 come available; however, they were still cleaning it off. The lady at the counter said it would be a few minutes. After waiting for half hour, a guy came up to us asking how many and put out name on the waitlist. We were first on this list. We waited and noticed the table for 2 finally cleared. A customer walked up cutting in front of line saying she was picking up food. All of a sudden we noticed she was seated to the table for 2. I asked the host and he stated that she had been waiting for a long time but was in the restroom. I said no, she just walked up and cut in front of everybody. Here is my two cents on the quality quantity and cost of this restaurant... This was delivered in a timely matter, but the driver could not follow up my simple instructions on locating my apartment .. Grubhub was responsible for a delivery. I ordered hot and sour soup , Szcechquan style chow mein. Barbecue pork fu yung. The hot and sour soup was just mediocre at best ... the chow mein had maybe if at best 2 ounces of meat it was mostly noodles, onions and bell peppers. There was hardly any hint of spicy whatsoever.... I was given three pancakes of some matter I had no idea what it actually was. .. I was also given a soy sauce, thicken with cornstarch infused with some onions.. Fortunately, GrubHub refunded my... they fail to explain what this meal actually was and it was definitely not worth no $17.. I do not recommend this restaurant. I started coming here 25 years ago. The food and service at the time were top notch. The best hot and sour soup to be had. Believe me, I shopped around . I then moved away for 15 years. I recently moved back and came in on Valentine's Day. The ambiance was the same as before which suits me fine. The service was very professional. We were able to sit in the back which we preferred. The food wasn't the same, it was even BETTER !!! Not sure if it was because I missed it so much. The pork chow mein is fantastic!! It's not greasy at all. The Bbq pork was perfect. The beef Szechuan was absolutely delicious. We added snow peas. The pot stickers are homemade. The filling is juicy and flavorful and the dough is the perfect consistency. I have to say I'm very disappointed with both the portion sizes and the service, which come across as quite stingy restaurant. The prices are excessive for the amount of food provided. I ordered the shrimp fried rice several days in a row and was charged $14 each time for mostly rice, barely any egg, and only five shrimp. The first batch had 6 shrimp and mostly rice hardly any eggs, the second order the following day had only 5 shrimp and in my opinion 1/2 scrambled egg. When I went to pick up my order, I asked for some napkins--plural--and was given just one. I had to request additional napkins, and even then, they handed me only one more. The same happened when I asked for soy sauce: they initially gave me just one packet, and when I asked for a few more, they reluctantly handed over a second and claimed that should be enough. Considering I paid $14 for a single dish, it's not unreasonable to expect at least 3-4 soy sauce packets, along with sufficient napkins and utensils--without having to ask repeatedly. The overall experience felt unwelcoming and unnecessarily stingy. In my experience, many Asian restaurants in Sacramento--Shanghai Garden included--tend to offer small portion sizes for steep prices, often skimping on ingredients and basic extras like condiments and napkins. On one occasion, I spent nearly $50 on a few items and still had to request additional soy sauce and napkins, only to be met with reluctance and pushback. That level of service is disappointing and makes the customer feel like a burden. Restaurants charging premium prices should extend basic courtesies without making patrons feel uncomfortable. Shanghai Garden's portions are small, overpriced, and the food itself is mediocre at best. Between the marginal taste and stingy service, I would not recommend this place. We started with hot and sour soup, loaded with tofu and vegetables however, the soup was on the salty side. We ordered the salt and pepper pork chops and ended up with an order of pork chunks that were heavily breaded with a thick coating. I had the bok choy chicken, which was flavorful and plenty full. For example, if you wanted orange chicken with a side of rice, you had to order a main of orange chicken and a separate main of fried rice. There's a decent number of dishes within multiple categories, and the delivery has been prompt. Most recently I got the Szechuan tofu, essentially mapo tofu.
