The menu is huge and each dish is so flavorful and delicious. They also have the best chips and queso in town. My only complaint is that I wish they would give you a better dip to chip ratio! I always end up with too many chips and not enough queso. Other favorites include the brisket chimichanga and their pork belly steamed baos. They also have great cocktails and mocktails and the interior is very cute. It's perfect for hanging out with friends or date night! I can't wait to return and try something new.

Interesting. After listening to the conversation going on, apparently the owners had fired everyone and brought in an all new crew. I had the second person she my server was brand new, so that might account for some of the concerns I had. If I go back, it won't be for a few months to let everyone get their legs under them and maybe things will change?

I first visited Shantell's years ago when they were located in another space in downtown Sanford, and today decided to check them out in their new space on Sanford Ave. We arrived around 5:00 pm on a Friday and there was not a customer in sight nor did anyone dine in the entire time we were there. The surroundings are a bit dingy and the place could use a good cleaning from top to bottom. But I digress, I was there for the soul food so I tried not to notice the cobwebs and dust around us. I ordered the Shrimp & Grits and my daughter ordered the Chicken & Waffles. I have to preface my review of the food by saying that I am well known for my Shrimp & Grits recipe therefore my expectations were pretty high going into this. What I ended up receiving was a huge disappointment. The grits were under cooked and tasted like they added fresh grits to an old batch to stretch it out. Yuck. The shrimp were an okay size but lacked flavored as did the dish overall. The accompanying sauce was oily and again - no flavor. The Chicken & Waffles was not much better. The chicken was moist with a good crunch but again lacked flavor. My daughter did however enjoy the waffle. The service was okay, I mean again, we were the only souls in the entire place, however, he did not seem bothered at all when I shared my disappointment with my meal. I have given up on Scott Joseph and his critic on food in The Orlando Sentinel,this guy must get paid off by restaurant owners.I walked into Shantelles Cafe and was greeted by a server who was quite friendly,i stood right by the kitchen watching the cook,i placed my order for a 5 piece chicken dinner that comes with one side,i got the mac and cheese and paid the xtra $4.00 for colored greens.There was on older couple sitting opposite and another 3 tables with people inside,I watched the cook go to the refridgerator,pick up the raw chicken with her bare hands,dip it into the mix and into the fryer,then wiped her hands on a towel that was tucked at her side,then placed fresh lettice and vegetables on plates with the same hand.I got my order to go and when i took one bite of the chicken i spat it out,it had no salt,tasteless and dry.The mac and cheese was also dry and the colored green was overpowering with some type of seasoning mix,it all went into the garbage,$15.00 worth of horrible food.I am a regular visitor to NOLA and have tried lots of great restaurants,this place does not come close to the worst i have had in NOLA. read more

We first happened across Shantell's two years ago after having drinks in downtown Sanford. We stopped in and the meal was so good, we came back for brunch the next morning. We went to the new location today with our sons, who picked the sunny spot by the windows nearest the sidewalk. I was not surprised when everyone finished their plates. Shantell's kitchen can cook! My jerk chicken and rice was incredible, my wife's Jerk Chicken Philly was unreal, and perhaps the most impressive thing of all was my sons finished their friend chicken. If you consider yourself a fried chicken connoisseur who values taste from crunch and spice in the fry batter, please go to Shantell's. They know what they're doing. Shantell's children tend the restaurant and they're wonderful people. They spent time making sure we had what we needed and even took time out to joke with our kids. My wife and I were free styling lunch on the first day of our honey moon. After picking up our rental car we saw that Shantell Just Until was a few minutes away. We walked into a beautifully decorated, home-style restaurant with many perfect tables in the dining room. Service was quick and helpful for a few newly wed idiots to figure out what was good. I had a hamburger with perfectly seasoned steak fries (my wife usually doesn't like fries but kept stealing mine the entire meal). It was worth every penny. I visited Shantell's Just Until Restaurant and had a mixed experience. The catfish was great--perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The macaroni was phenomenal and easily the highlight of the meal. I originally ordered the beef patty, but unfortunately it wasn't available when I got there. I also tried the peach cobbler, but I didn't enjoy it. The texture seemed off and it had a slightly pungent smell that made it hard to finish. Overall, there were definitely some standout dishes, but a few things could be improved. FULL DISCLOSURE- This is my family's restaurant - my parents became the owners over 15 years ago. Since buying it they moved the restaurant from its free standing location to the plaza behind it. Our older son and my wife got the same thing...Country Boy Meal...one egg, bacon/sausage, French toast/Pancake, plus a side of hash browns. They all LOVE hash browns! I got BLT on rye bread with home fries! The food was really good, not anything fancy, it's a home cooked meal. You should be full from your meal and might have some leftovers.
