So, airport food is never great...and prices are inflated...so the task becomes picking the best of the mediocre and overpriced options available. For anyone from out of town reading this, the real Shapiro's on Meridian is amazing. Please go there if you're in town long enough to do so. The airport version emphasizes speed which I understand to an extent. The bagels are good, but the eggs for the breakfast sandwiches are precooked discs...when I saw the server reach into a bin to pull one out for my sandwich, I almost changed my order, but things were moving fast and my brain was not yet moving fast pre-coffee at 5AM. My egg and cheese bagel sandwich wasn't bad as I think at least the eggs hadn't been in the bin long enough at 5AM to get rubbery. The server a lady with dark hair and a bad attitude on 8/7/26 was rude and did not get my order correct. Oh gosh, Shapiro's was out of so many things when I visited on a weekend around dinner time. No sides at all, no croissants, no corn beef. So I got a smoked turkey sandwich on wheat bread, and it was very tasty, but it might have tasted better on a croissant! I wouldn't know, though, because again, they were out of croissants. The smoked turkey is not slices of turkey breast, but instead pre-sliced deli turkey. Everyone was so slow here when I visited. It took me a good 20 minutes to get my sandwich! Stopped at Shapiro's this morning around 6am. Long line, but moved quick. Bagel was ready as we were ordering. Decided on a sausage, egg, & cheese bagel, only gave 4 stars because despite 2 signs listing they had mustard they told me they did not. This was super disappointing as the bagel was super dry. Trying to be positive and be grateful it wasn't super greasy either but some mustard or Mayo would have earned them another star. The Pastrami Reuben was delicious, but once ordered, it was a bit of a struggle for the sandwich to be made properly. I live in New York where it's a given that a Reuben Sandwich consists of Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut, grilled on Rye Bread with cole slaw, brown mustard, Russian Dressing and pickle on the side. At the main Shapiro's is downtown Indy, they always want to debate that "the Reuben is a corned beef sandwich!" Pastrami, I counter, to wit, is a form of corned beef. The dim, but lovable, dipshit behind the counter at the Indianapolis International Airport Shapiro's was at an almost total loss. My order for the $23 was accompanied by my before the fact $4 tip "To Insure Proper Service." The incentive alas went unheeded. First attempt at service entailed Pastrami and Swiss on untoasted Rye - my request for brown mustard and Thousand Is dressing on the side apparently contributed to the confusion. After sending the the cold, still wrapped sandwich back for toasting, I was shocked to sit down and discover no kraut to be found anywhere between the now lightly browned slices of bread! A second visit yielded a topping of the required kraut and a third trip garnered a pickle. The sandwich maker sheepishly non-apologized that my pastrami request confused him. "Don't you know how to make a Reuben?" queried his more experienced co-worker. Once complete the sandwich was tasty, despite Shapiro's worst efforts. read more

The tuna salad sandwich was actually delicious! The salad wasn't just tuna and mayo, there were also pieces of celery and relish in there (and it seemed like maybe egg?) that added some flavour and texture. I had it with 1000 Island dressing which was great, and thankfully they didn't slather the dressing on - just a light coating on the bread. Even though they loaded up the sandwich with filling, the slices of bread weren't huge, so $14 was pretty expensive for a simple deli sandwich, although obviously you expect to overpay at an airport. The cashier here was super nice and made my morning with how cheerful she was. I also appreciated that they broke out the tuna salad for me at 10:27 when lunch technically starts at 10:30. I end up eating 1/2 the sandwich, with not eating any of the bread. The other 1/2 is in my bag. I didn't eat the potato chips yet. The potato had tooo much mustard in it. I was really disappointed. Shapiro's Deli at the airport is a nice feature at the airport if you just want a sandwich or salad on the go while waiting for your flight. This is nothing compared to the original location on S. meridian st., since it is in the airport, but it has the same style and main menu items that you would get at the original location. The service is very good and professional. They take good care in preparation for your sandwich or salad. The ambiance is nothing spectacular or to write home about, but is nice and offers a seating area for you to sit down and enjoy your sandwich or salad. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and a side of potato salad. Both were amazing and tasted spectacular!! They were very fresh as well! Shapiro's Deli uses nothing but the freshest ingredients in preparation for their sandwiches and salads. When I am at the airport, I try to stop at the deli for a sandwich while waiting for my flight, because I know I am going to enjoy it and get my money's worth. I highly recommend Shapiro's Deli if you go to the airport and want something to eat. It is wonderful. read more

Sometimes it doesn't take much to make one's day, but this did it for me. I absolutely love a nice, fresh bagel, especially when it is prepared right. I totally despise those lousy Thomas' bagels or the other brands you get from the grocery store that are solid and like little hardened loaves of old bread. This bagel was fresh. Soft and very flavorful and would be a treat for any bagel snob...like me. The addition of an egg, bacon, and cheese topped it off and made me like this place a lot. Yes, this will be my choice of breakfast the next time I pass through Indianapolis, which is actually coming up later this month. Airports seldom have highlights because, well because they are airports. Is this place overpriced because it is in an airport -- of course it is. But, for years and years now, whenever my wife and I fly out of Indianapolis, we grab a couple of sandwiches from Shapiro's to either eat on the plane or even to take home after our flight. Our go-to meals are pastrami on rye for me and corned beef on rye for her, plus two orders of potato salad. Bread is always fresh. Sandwich sizes are always large. Meat is always flavorful and moist. And the potato salad is the best ever anywhere anytime. When we then open our sack on the plane, jealous eyes immediately fall upon us. The IND version of Shapiro's Deli (Kosher Style) is a walk-up on the Southwest Airlines wing. This is no Corky and Lenny's in terms of a sit down place (with pickles), but they did make a decent pastrami and swiss on rye that I enjoyed on the plan back home. In any event, it's a step above any prepackaged sandwich you can buy near the gate. The line was on the long side the day we were there, but it moved quickly. Service was efficient, but perfunctory.
