Words fail to describe how much I love the food at Shawarma King. But maybe, actions might help convey my love: I moved to Kalamazoo about two weeks ago, and I've already eaten at Shawarma King THREE times! Why do I love SK ever so? First, because they've got authentic Middle Eastern fare! Having grown up in Dubai, I'm a little bit of an Arabic/Lebanese food snob (that's probably an understatement). Their hummus doesn't taste like it came out of a tin; the meat is perfectly flavoured and cooked to perfection and the falafels are perfection squared. Pros: + Super authentic, delicious food! + Try the: falafels, hummus, chicken & beef shish kafta, and/or fattoush salad and OBVS the chicken shawarma + AMAZING SERVICE + Budget friendly + They do a gluten-free selection which is amazing! + Service is fast Cons: - Their tahini is hit and miss. There are days where it's watered down and days where it's amazing. - Biryani wasn't as flavourful as I'd want it to be. - Babaganoush isn't super aubergine-y. At this point you may be thinking, if there are 2.5/3 cons, how can you still give this place 5 stars? And it's really because I'm slightly biased and I've never had Middle Eastern food this authentic anywhere across the US in the last six years (be it in Ann Arbor, New York or anywhere else). TRY IT. I've eaten a lot of sandwiches at Shawarma King. Have I mentioned the sandwiches? In addition to the middle eastern classics they do so well (falafel, shawarma) they've got a few custom numbers that are big hits with the locals. The Shawafal has chicken and beef shawarma, falafel, hummus, and taboulleh all wrapped in a pita. Vegetarian? Try the Lisa: tahina sauce, hommous, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, hot sauce, eggplant, and french fries. Yeah. For real. Also, don't be scared to try a soujouk sandwich -- this sausage is so rich and flavorful, and it's smothered in their amazing toum (garlic sauce). Veggies more your speed? I'm willing to wager that the best cauliflower sandwich you'll ever eat is waiting for you at Shawarma King. It's way better than a cauliflower sandwich has any business being. What I love most about Mediterranean places like this, is that you can get a high quality delicious sandwich or wrap for an amazing price! $2.95 will get you a classic shwarma a la carte, how can one complain? To my surprise, the vegetarian grape leaf sandwich won my heart over a chicken shwarrma (my go to Medi choice). The grape leafs are seasoned to perfection and I'm drooling just writing about them. Their "to-go" time has always been on point, we've never waited more than 15 mins when we place carry-out. Tabouli salad is delicious and a small order is enough for two people! read more

We have always seen Shawarma King down on Drake Road but we've never been inside, until tonight. We dropped in for dinner and had Shawarma Delight. A huge platter with hummus, kibbee, falafel, steak and chicken shawarma and beef and chicken kafta. OMG so much food! Our server was a gem. She stopped twice to make sure we knew what we were about to enjoy and everything was prepared very well. The flavors were subtle and I quite enjoyed all the combinations mixing items up with the pita provided. The restaurant is very clean, well organized and well decorated. The music fits and is quite pleasant. There's a lot of languages in play here, and it's delightful. This is one of the few places where food tourism really pays off. I'm very glad we came here. I am really looking forward to many future visits. Perhaps not this platter, it is a LOT of food. The singular standout treat for me, and I was prepared for it, was their garlic sauce. I'm a big fan of their calliflower wrap and fallafel. I stop by just to buy a gallon of olive oil for about 25/30 bucks (best deal in town), their king tea!! And frozen mint lemonade. I'm a fan of this place even though my wife and kids don't like the Med food all that much. I always like to get a sampler of some kind because I don't just like one kind of food. The kitchen is open as you walk in so you can see the food being prepared. The owner/manager always seems suspect if you have a coupon but hey, that's what coupons are for, right? He isn't rude about them or anything but maybe wants to be cautious of his staff taking them...whatever. The portions are more than adequate for me and I often take a little of the hummus home for a snack later. To my knowledge, everything is homemade and it shows. I can't say enough about the fresh fattoush and hummus. I try to stop by somewhat regularly when I'm on that side of town and I always say that I should go there more often just to satisfy my craving for the middle eastern fare. read more

We had a very large order for 7 people and they filled it completely with lots of tahini and garlic sauce and pita. The chicken shawarma wraps were big and delicious especially for the price. The large fattoush salad with chicken was MASSIVE and such a deal for the price. Falafel and baba ganoush are also don't miss appetizers!! Give this place a try, you won't regret it! This is our go to place for a quick and tasty meal. There are several versions around town but the one on Drake is the best. Everything we have tried has been excellent. And the tea is fantastic, you really need to try some. The service is kind of odd, it looks like you should order from the counter but in fact they have table service. The staff is great and the service is quick. If you have not tried this place yet you really must. Even the most picky eaters like the food here. Go for it! read more

So my boyfriend and I decided to have something different for lunch. We decided on Shawarma King. I remember eating here a few years ago and I did enjoy it. I loved their lentil soup. So this time, my boyfriend ordered the Chicken Shawarma sandwich which came with fries and an order of their wings (people rave about them), and I decided to get their Chicken Shawarma lunch platter with extra garlic and tahini sauce. When the food finally came, I could tell it was cold before I opened it. When I opened the container the chicken was so bland and dry. I feel like the chicken had been baking and sitting out for HOURS! The rice was cooked properly but had no flavor to it whatsoever. I was very disappointed because I looked forward to this meal. The lentil soup was as I remembered it and still a decent price! In an effort to save my meal, I tried to re-hydrate the meat, I added some water with chicken bouillon paste to it to make a chicken broth, and I added a little bit of salt, pepper, garlic, and red pepper. I added the chicken to the broth and simmered it on low for 15 min. I heated up the rice and added the chicken back to the container. The chicken tasted better as far as the seasoning but it was still so DRY!!! The only thing that saved the meal was the garlic and tahini sauce. If I didn't have those I would have THROWN MY MEAL OUT!!!! My boyfriend's sandwich was a disaster as well. All the sandwich had in it was pickles and tasteless chicken (like mine) all wrapped in DRY pita bread. He said the only thing that made it edible better was the garlic sauce. The fries had to get tossed out because they were SOGGY from sitting in the styrofoam container. The wings were OK, but they were dry as well and they had no sauce included. However, they did have a bit of spice to them which was in the breading of the wings. Overall, we were both disappointed. There are a couple of good things that I like about the place. Their lentil soup is pretty good, the garlic and tahini sauce is good. To note, the tahini sauce is a bit runny but has decent flavor. The baklava was really GOOD! I also think when it comes to the lunch specials they give you a lot of food for what you pay for. We were pretty full after eating, and I still have some pita bread, chicken, and rice leftover. read more

When I want a fuller meal I like to add a fatoush salad for some crispy crunch, or if I'm really hungry, the big sampler platter with fried kibbee and falafel in addition to beef and chicken shawarma, plus tabbouli and salad of your choice. My single favorite casual spot to eat in Kzoo. Hummus and bababanouj are both really good. The fattoush salad is the standard by which I judge all other fattoush salads. But my favorite item on the menu by FAR, is the shawafel sandwich. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am fully aware this is a made up dish and not authentic cuisine in the least. But it is amazing! Hummus, beef and chicken shawarma, tabbouleh, falafel, tahini sauce, tomato, and pickle all wrapped together in a pita. Truly a life changing experience. Extremely well priced for what you get. Not expensive in the least. Decor is cheap, but clean. And the service has never been anything but prompt and polite. Only thing I legit don't like about this spot is a lack of changing tables in the bathroom for kids. Yes, I'm aware it's located in the heart of a student living area and the need isn't great, but come on... how much does one of those cost? I wish that Lebanese restaurants had been around when I was growing up in Kalamazoo in the 70s. At that time, Chinese was probably the most exotic cuisine Kalamazoo had to offer. But, that situation has been rectified, and Shawarma King is doing a great job bringing diversity to the Mall City's palate. I don't live there anymore, but on a visit last week I needed some lunch, saw this place along Drake Road, and decided to give it a try, since middle eastern food may be my favorite kind of food. I live near Detroit and work in Toledo now, cities which both have lots of good (and even more not-so-good) Lebanese/Middle Eastern chow options, and this place stands up to the best of them. I ordered the hummus/lamb lunch combo with a small "Lebanese Salad" (basically a fatoush minus bread), and not a bite of it disappointed. First, big props to Shawarma King for serving lamb--the most commonly eaten meat in the middle east, but rarely served in American Lebanese restaurants (that's changing, but it's still the exception rather than the rule). The lamb was savory and tender, and the hummus with it was exceptional, smooth with just the right proportions of lemon, garlic, and tahini. Veggies in the salad were fresh, the dressing was mildly tart and well seasoned. I wouldn't have minded a little more lemon in it, but it still surpassed many that I've had. On the next visit I make to the 'zoo, a return here is mandatory. read more
