I can't believe this place doesn't have better reviews. I went twice in a week, and tried lots of things from sandwiches to baked goodies. Highlights were the turkey sandwich on homemade brown bread (the turkey was legit like thanksgiving not like slices) and all the signature shortbread cookies. The almond shortbread was magical, and I gave my friends the sprinkle cookies. Those sprinkle cookies caused my friends mom to see if they will ship to Los Angeles! just waited in line 25-30 minutes on a Friday morning just to buy some baked goods for my staff that has been working on a construction job. There was 15 people in line ahead of me, so I was expecting a wait. After 5-10 minutes, we realize that only one employee is helping all of us. All the while the other (3) employees were either grinding fresh orange juice.(blonde haired lady.), packaging loaves of bread.(shorter Hispanic lady with glasses.), or counting out tips.(Hispanic lady with a long ponytail.). This was all happening in view of the customers in line which made it even worse. 100% of people waiting in line were commenting on how ridiculous this was. almost like the staff didn't want to help the customers. Sandwich Heaven :) To be honest, I mainly go here for their sandwich and skipped the pastries lol because their breads are freshly baked and their ingredients are freshly sliced into perfection :) Not to mention their customer service is always on point and servers are seem to always happy. I truly wish i didn't have to write this but I do. Schat's in Mammoth has been a mainstay of ours for over 30 years and probably more than that. We were in last Friday morning and there was very little in the case of pastries, donuts, etc. We purchased traditional bear claws and raspberry bear claws which are more like a donut among other items. No exaggerating, there was a saran wrap thin spread of raspberry jam the size of a quarter inside the bear claw. Here is the real deal breaker. STALE!! The traditional bear claw was actually crispy on the outside, not as in overbaked but as in old and stale. Same story for the raspberry bearclaw and some of the other items we bought. These were not baked the same day and absolutely should have not been for sale. Everyone knows that it is very difficult for restaurants with skyrocketing food and associated costs. We have seen the price increases and would keep coming back to Schats, but the items have been getting smaller and now the lack of ingriedents and stale food spells real trouble for this Mammoth mainstay. Hopefully they figure it out but it doesn't look good. How Sad!!! read more

I recently experienced one of the best cannolis of my life at this bakery. Judging by the exterior of this building, I had thought that it was a Swedish bakery, which is why I stopped in. I was hoping to find something like my favorite marzipan cookies from Solvang. I was surprised to see mostly American chocolates, donuts, cookies, and cakes. A few of the cookies looked good to me, but I decided to order the very last cannoli left for the day. My mom is half Italian, so I've experienced plenty of "authentic" cannolis in my life. This particular cannoli was by no means authentic, but it was amazing, and beyond delicious. Rather than a traditional cannoli shell, the espresso-flavored cream was wrapped in a sticky Florentine style cookie. Every single ingredient tasted as fresh and perfect as could be. It was quite pricey at nearly $8, even though it was on the larger side. But it was so delicious that I couldn't resist eating the entire thing before leaving Mammoth. The inside and outside of the shop were super cozy, cute, and clean. The women working inside the shop were friendly. I would definitely stop by here again next time I'm in town. read more

We visited here before our road trips back home because it was more convenient than going to the original Bishop bakery, which we normally do. This location has its own style, and is owned by a different family member than the one in Bishop. With that said, the setup is slightly different. The menu does not have pre-selected sandwich choices, but is more of a build-your-own style. Coming in with the expectation that this bakery is just a smaller version of the Bishop location, we were a tad disappointed not finding familiar favorites. However, less crowds and lines were a plus! The sandwich was very good, nonetheless, but it came at a high price point for what it was. If you fall into adding all the available toppings, your sandwich could end up becoming more stuffed than you like, as they are generous with selections. We also ordered a chocolate cake from here during our visit, and that was really tasty and highly recommended. There is some seating outside, but just be careful because the umbrellas weren't very stable during our visit - one of the umbrellas nearly missed knocking out half our party by a few inches! They definitely use their available floor space to sell items that seem to cater to all the tourists that show up: beef jerky, pickles.
