I was expecting something amazing being that this Bakery has the SCHAT name. However, I can't say that it was anything better than just mediocre. My kiddo had a ham and egg croissant for breakfast. She said that she really enjoyed that. My husband had an apple fritter. It had a very croissant like texture to it. It was light and flaky. It was also made up of several layers of buttery goodness. I had a pecan bun. I saw it and it looked more like a cinnamon roll, but it wasn't close to being that or anything like I expected. To be honest, I don't know what it is or why, but it felt tail. I didn't care for it all that much but I definitely made sure to finish it up because it cost so much. I don't usually pay so much for such a mediocre item. To be honest, if I had purchased the same item from another local bakery, and Ugale, one at that, I would've been terribly disappointed and probably would've requested a refund. Now that I've been here and have had the experience of some of their pastries, I am pretty sure of my decision in saying that I doubt I will be returning here.

Walked in en route to the Village in the morning and were in search of coffee and pastries. I got sensory overload upon stepping foot inside. There was a bakery section with all sorts of desserts and pastries in the front and seating area in the back. There is also another deli section in the back where you can order soups and sandwiches. Everything looked so good! It took us forever to decide on our order. Decided on a chocolate eclair and coffee.

Beautiful bakery, very busy and efficient, quick service. Reasonable pricing for elegant and beautiful creations. Cakes, pastries, cream puffs, cookies, various croissants, breads, rolls, donuts, coffee drinks. I purchased chocolate dipped butter cookies: OH MY GAWD, so good. I will probably visit this place again before I leave town.

Moldy oranges being used for the fresh squeezed orange juice

This is some of the WORST service I have experienced anywhere in my entire life, rude, inefficient and incompetent. On top of that, the inside of this was place was disgusting, there was trash everywhere, including on the coffee bar, and there were boxes of moldy oranges which they were using to make orange juice out of! It was busy inside, but nothing too crazy for a popular bakery/cafe on a weekday morning. But the staff was behaving as though it was third first day ever inside a food establishment. They moved the line to the opposite side of the building twice for no reason causing chaos, and half the customers were receiving their coffee orders as they were ordering them, but the other half were told to wait and they would call them out. But that is not what was happening, they were quietly setting unmarked cups on the counter, and announcing what they were at the volume of a whisper, I kid you not. And again, there were a LOT of people waiting for drinks. But no one could figure out whose coffees were whose. It got so bad that I started yelling out orders I could hear because the "baristas" were just setting them down and whispering what they were and walking away. That was the only time during my visit things were kind of running efficiently, and it was because I was doing their job for them! They messed up one of my groups coffees, and instead of fixing their mistake, the extremely rude young woman behind the counter said "you didn't order it like that", until I pulled out a photo I had taken of our order screen before paying! Every customer in the building was upset and shaking their heads in disbelief, so I suppose the upside was it was a nice bonding experience between all of us bereft patrons, brought together by service that we all, as a collective, couldn't fathom how horrible it was. The pastries themselves were good and the coffee was decent, but not worth the 7 circles of hell it took to receive them. If you want OJ made from moldy oranges and the worst service of your life, go here. Otherwise, go literally anywhere else.

Oct 20, 2025. Tourist trap with insane tourist trap prices.

October 19, 2025 A tourist trap with tourist seriously inflated prices. It's popular only because it's been there a long time. That's all. You can get bakery items like this at your local Vons, Safeway etc... in the bakery section just like Schats for half the price. Just sayin.

This particular location is in Mammoth Lakes. I dropped by here twice but I wasn't able to get in the first time cuz I didn't know that they close at 6pm. So I went early on my next visit which was 3pm. To my surprise, they were already closing their doors and when I asked why, the lady wasn't able to give me a reason why. It seemed that they close the store when they feel like it. However, they let me in to grab one item quickly as promised. Because of this, I wasn't able to choose properly what I really wanted so I grabbed one item that's on top of the shelf. It wasn't something I really liked. I was glad though that I was able to snap a few pics.

Sandwiches are way overpriced: $18.00 for a full and $13.00 for a half. Hardly any meat or extras.

I had specifically asked to substitute the rice, but it was still served -- and there was a hair in it, which is absolutely unacceptable from a hygiene standpoint. The kids' burger was overcooked to the point of being dry like a cracker, and the fries looked and tasted like they were cooked in old, repeatedly used oil. This is unsafe and unacceptable, especially for children's food. The steak was ordered medium well, but was served well done -- completely overcooked. The chimichurri sauce was also misleading: instead of the classic green sauce, a red mixture was served that had nothing to do with it. The coleslaw was simply awful. Additionally, the staff showed no proper response -- we were not offered a replacement, a discount, or even a proper apology. This reflects a complete disregard for service standards and customer care. In its current state, this does not meet even basic restaurant standards.

We were really glad to find Stellar Brews. I ordered a chai latte and it honestly may be the best I've ever had in my life -- perfectly spiced, not too sweet, and just really comforting. We were on our way out of town around 9:30am and stopped to get coffee and grabbed an everything bagel with eggs and bacon as well as a turkey egg burrito from the grab and go section. The coffee was fine. The bagel was so hard and burnt that I could barely bite into it. I tried a couple of different spots and it was inedible. Whatever the egg puck was inside the bagel was hard and tasteless. The "bacon" was literally stuck to the bagel, I tried to peel it off and eat some but it didn't taste like bacon and was like leather. I'm having a hard time understanding why they would serve this? The burrito was just brought out from the kitchen. We bit into it and it was cold. The tortilla tasted fake. Again, why put this out there to purchase. Had we not been in a time crunch we would have turned around to show them what they gave us and request a refund. I've never thrown out food before but these were inedible. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 as the cashier was very friendly.

There was lemon water to drink which was nice. Not so positive: Everything we got was dry and honestly, not that good. The most moisture laden item was a raspberry crumble bar but it was surprisingly not very sweet and kinda off putting. The scone was dry, the shortbread was dry, the bottom of my daughter's cookie was burned. Like pretty black. Maybe it was supposed to be that way? My wife wanted an espresso but the lady behind the counter explained they only had drip coffee. Our daughter asked the same lady if there was a cupcake available, and she said "nope, what you see is what you get." Nothing wrong with what she answered but her tone seemed like she was really annoyed by the question. My wife just wanted to leave but felt like it would be rude to leave without buying things and we like to generally support local businesses. Side note: We ended up going to Schatts bakery a half mile away later that day and had a way better experience with far better tasting baked goods. We wish East side luck but we won't be back.
