We went first to the bakery and got the haystack and a cookie- both were very good! Then onto the sandwiches! We got the roasted turkey on shepherder bread- so good! I got tomato, sprouts, lettuce and mayo on it. It comes with a cookie. We also got a side of vegetable soup. My only thing is the price- the sandwich is $18 and the soup was $8. The chocolate croissant was pretty good but could use more chocolate chips inside and could have been softer and fresher. The glazed cinnamon twist donut and the onion cheesy bread (both not pictured) were super good! The bakery was crazy busy but they did a pretty good job making it not a long wait. Stopping at Schat's Bakery on our way to Mammoth has become a tasty tradition that we look forward to. It's a sugar lover's paradise! This Dutch bakery has been here for decades and they offer a variety of sweets from donuts, to cookies, fruit strudels, bread puddings, just about anything you can dream of. Their apple pie, bear claws and bran muffins are among my favorites but honestly, they're the only items I've tried. Regular visitors to the area and locals speak about the great divorce and that the location in Bishop, operated by the ex-husband, is the superior bakery, and that the bread is better and lasts longer. While I was unable to verify the claims or compare, I did experience the long line waiting for service in the morning and a few of the products sold here. It was after 9am, a line coiling through the cramped lobby of the bakery was moving albeit slowly, thereby giving me ample time to take in the sights and options available (see photos). The deli sandwiches are ordered in the back, so a separate line is required for that option. Drinks, pastries, breads etc are ordered from the long line that got longer as I stood in it. Once my turn came I was assisted quickly, good hot coffee, strong but not burnt like Starbucks was the first thing to get. Next I chose a warm, fresh ready-made breakfast croissant (ham and eggs, possibly cheese), and a loaf of multigrain bread, I forget how many. The croissant hit the spot, it wasn't black forest ham and was lighter in color than the older photo on Yelp show (probably pre-divorce) but it was solid and gave me energy for a tough hike afterwards. The coffee9 was better than expected too. Bread: Pre-sliced was perfect since I was staying in a condo with limited cooking utensils but I could at least make toast and sandwiches. The multigrain has a little oily surface, it's not perceivable when eating but it struck me as odd, more like a commercial recipe than Old World artisanal style. This is probably what all those voices of opinion were alluding to. Overall, pretty good, the deli menu was pretty limited despite the number bread choices. It's understandable since Mammoth Lakes is not really close to major distributors. Ultimately, I spent the rest of the week having coffee at the condo or checking out the outstanding Black Velvet Café. read more

I originally drove by Schat's on the way to get gas and didn't think twice about stopping in. As I was filling my car up, I kept thinking about bear claws and how delicious they are and how I deserved one. Also, I was 500 feet from a bakery so I'm going to get a bear claw. Can I also just say this little building is the most adorable thing ever? I love it. Upon walking in you're greeted by the wonderful aroma of fresh baked goods. You're going to have a hell of a time picking out what you want because the possibilities were endless. First, there was no price tag on the food and drinks. The service was slow and the fruit cups had rotten fruit,‍ the price was too high, and they don't have forks to eat cake. I have loved their donuts, pastries, and breads for 35 years. Why did I give them two stars, it has to do with their service and their cake making and decorating. Two years in a row I've tried to order a cake for my wife's birthday. Last year, I ordered her a cake a week in advance and the day I came to pick it up, nothing. No cake, no call in advance, no apology, nothing. I went to Vons that day and ordered one for the next day, Vons saved the day. Decided to try Schat's bakery again. I order a 6 inch white cake with a chocolate mousse filling, chocolate icing with pink roses and a Happy Birthday Mama G and the picture displayed is what I received for $45. On our way out of town we stopped at Schat's for coffee and breakfast treats. The store is nicely decorated and has a selection of breads, truffles, sweet treats, desserts, and donuts. Our family ordered four donuts that were a hit with each person. The coffee was very hot and good. The line moved quickly and the staff was friendly.
