I got a quarter sheet cake from this Sheng Kee location for my son's 100 day celebration. The cost is $31 with standard cream filled. If you want filling such as mousse, chocolate, chestnut etc... extra $9. Fruits on top, extra $9. Overall it tasted like your standard Asian cake, we like it because it's not too sweet. I've visited this bakery , they have a really good green tea chiffon cake with whipped cream and topped with fruit. They have a good Variety of Chinese pastry and desserts. Everything looks so good!! It's not that I'm a healthy eater, but I pick my battles when it comes to food and these kind of carbs are not part of my usual lifestyle. Occasionally though, my body throws a total fit. It's like, "eh, jefe, you ever heard of carbs, man? Yeah, if you don't get to a bakery and give us some we're gonna do bad things to you, man." So I'm like, "whoa, chill, I'll go to Sheng Kee for the hookup." When I go to Sheng Kee Bakery I usually buy 2-3 days worth of baked goods to have for breakfast to make my body happy again. They have so many things that I love and I'm always trying new things. Occasionally I try something and don't like it, and that's probably my fault. I don't like taro and that shows up in some of their stuff. Yeah, I'm a moron, I know. Most people like it. I'm weird. Usually I try something new and I like it. So what was it today that had me taking George Clinton's name in vain? Well, it was this sponge cake type of thing with some almonds on top and a light coating of something that must be made from the chemical in the brain that triggers strong love feelings of the universal nature. I'm so glad I grabbed two of these. I get one tomorrow too. Nom! Other things I usually buy include the sun cookies, red bean mochi pastries and black sesame mochi pastries. My favorite thing at Sheng Kee by far are the Portuguese egg tarts. They have two varieties. I don't like the one with the plain shiny yellow top, it's very bland, but the one with the sort of red, burnt look on top is the good one. Every time I buy one of these it gets eaten as soon as I take it out of the bag-- like every time. So I tried buying two. I eat two right away. Once I bought four, yep all four. Did I feel regret? My toddler nephew has gotten my daughter and me hooked on their loaves of bread. My sister always buys the half loaf for him, and I always take a slice when I'm over. They have many bakery goods similar to the ones at 85°C Bakery Cafe, but the taste is not as good and the size here is smaller. I find the bakery goods here expensive for the quality. A small taro swirl was already ~$3. Same goes with a small custard. I can't remember all the items I tried, but everything either tasted off, bland, or both. Also, everything was dry. I even tried the mango raspberry mousse to see how the cakes fare. No thanks... The flavor was there, but the texture is horrid. It was not soft at all. With the overabundance of Asian bakeries in Cupertino, Sheng Kee just fell short for me. Every time I walked in to try some of their buns, I would always be disappointed by the quality of the bread and just the general lack of taste from them. The onion bread was overwhelmingly stinky! It's also soggy and has raw onions sitting on top of a hard crusted bread - not a pretty sight. The pork sung bun was just gross as the dried pork smelled really bad and the mayo was simply too much (I would recommend Kee Wah for a better pork sung bun). Not all is bad, though; some of their breads and pastries are worth trying. Their Portuguese egg tarts were very good (probably a close second to 85 degree's egg tarts). The cheese puff was also delicious, light tasting and soft. For a savory treat, my favorite is their beef curry puff, which was quite yummy! read more

Located in one my least favorite shopping centers due to the difficulty in finding parking, this Chinese bakery is worth a visit if you do manage to find a space. Many selections to choose from. The mochi sesame bread is interesting, tasty. I would also highly recommend the pineapple coconut bun. Can't visit without buying one actually. Bread was fresh. Other items worth a try include the green onion bun, green onion with shredded pork, and green onion with sausage. Asian pastries. Compared to Paris Baguette or 85C i'd say their pastries are cheaper but quality isn't equivalent, it's not bad, but just not up to par when comparing. It's ok with me though, good pastries at cheaper prices, and not overcrowded. My favorites are their wheat germ mushroom bun, milk bun, sausage w/ green onions bun, and egg tarts. Big plus is there is no line for selecting pastries! You can walk around a couple times are really look at what you want. Sheng-Kee gave me an instant 20-pound weight gain. Not their fault, not that I am blaming them, but gosh darnit ! The baked goods are addicting ! I have never left a bakeshop with 30 pieces of shenanigans ...and then back again the next day (or two) for more of the same stuff ! Ugggggh ! There are about 3 stores I go to, but this store is where I frequent since it's next to Ranch 99 and Starbucks...and Joy Luck and some other stores than can either increase the diabetic population or make the occurrence of a heart attack faster ! I love this store! Although quite small and gets crowded during the morning and early evening, they never seem to run out of my favorite pineapple raisin custard bun and garlic bread ! And sugar-butter toast. And custard bun. And Hawaiian bread. And shredded pork bun....aaaaand the list goes on. Yes, I highly suggest trying those mentioned on top of this paragraph...instantly you'll feel more curvaceous and will feel the need to drop by Target and get new clothes. Honestly, I love Sheng Kee bread. Their staff is pretty fast and they are pretty nice. Except for this one lady at the counter who wouldn't give me the last piece of lotus egg pastry for free since it was the last one anyway and I already bought the other three. Grr. I forgive you, lady at the counter. Those lotus egg pastries are suuuuuuper yummy and quite pricey. $2.50 each. On a good day, parking can be just right in front of the store. When the day gets busy (lunch time on a week day), have someone buy the bread for you while you wait in the car. Have your list ready. This is a to-go place. No tables and chairs inside this store. They do sell illly brand coffee and I was told by a man at Starbucks that illy coffee if the best. Ya sure? If you feel like dining, there are tables and chairs in front of the store or near by. They do accept credit card and your real money. Yay ! Still, my "sudden" chubbiness is because of you, Sheng Kee ! I was surprised by the amount of good ones I found at this Sheng Kee Bakery. the interior is small n kinda cramped, but the selves r filled with every kind of Chinese baked good I could imagine. it's not the cleanest bakery, but the fragrant smells of the breads baking makes u forget that. the location of the shop isn't the best. it's in the big Chinese plaza on Wolfe Road where Ranch 99 is. it looks like they r building even more small shops which doesn't look good for the small amount of parking spaces already there. (probably going to b major popular after the new Apple monstrosity opens.) they also sell coffee drinks by Peet's. not sure how they taste tho. haven't tried any yet. i usually opt to get a milk tea if I'm around a tea shop. read more

I am not giving this Sheng Kee as high of a rating solely due to the fact that they're so popular they are ALWAYS sold out of all the pastries I love and they are cash only. The other Sheng Kee's I've been to are much cleaner, much bigger, never sell out and take credit. Aside from that, this is a standard Sheng Kee Bakery. I mean ... be ware it ... is quite dirty in here compared to many other places but they make good pastries and I've yet to get sick. I love their egg tarts which is what I order them out of almost every time (8-10 in a box please!) and their moist cakes are great for birthday parties to consume AND to throw (hey, it comes off easier than American cake frosting ;) haha). Asian patisserie is kind of a big deal, and I've found that Asians generally align with their ethnicity. Thus it should come as no surprise that Taiwanese pastry is my personal preference. Sheng Kee (next to Ranch 99 in Cupertino, natch) is my go-to for these goodies. My favorites have always been the custard filled and green onion topped. If you're looking for the Taiwanese pastry starter kit, those two are good places to start. The green onion and hot dog is a childhood favorite. The red bean filled is also a classic, as are the sponge cake rolls. The beef curry and chicken puffs are also a solid snack, and you'll definitely earn brownie points by bringing a cake home to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, etc. (For true Asian-ness, go with the Passion Fruit Mousse.) In general, Sheng Kee's pastries are a very good approximation, though they're not quite as fluffy (is that a good technical term?) and stray a little to the sweet side. It's also more grungy than your more American-friendly places like 85C or Paris Baguette, which is fine by me. It's pretty much a must-stop every time I shop at Ranch 99. read more

Definitely a bakery I find myself strolling into when in the plaza. Obviously I'm a sucker at any bakery that promises freshness, duh. I got a couple hot dog buns, which is basically hot dog slices placed within the egg bread in 4 quadrants and topped with green onions. Then grabbed a BBQ Pork Bun and Swiss Roll for the brother and S.O. Pretty decent prices, so if you're ever looking for something quick to snack on or to get rid of that sweet tooth you're having stop by. P.S. The difference between Chinatown bakeries and those not in Chinatown is that the people who go to the not Chinatown bakeries are more civilized and clean. My first time at a bakery like this (I grew up in San Francisco), I was shocked. You get a tray and a pair of tongs before you look at all the savory pastries they have in their respective little plastic cube. Once you see what you like you lift the lid and using the tongs you transfer a pastry onto your tray. What genius! This would not work in Chinatown. The people would use their hands or pick at each pastry for the "best one." I am simply amazed at how civilized it was in here. Oh and it was amazingly clean. In Chinatown, the ladies who serve you touch cash and then without washing their hands they grab your pastry to dump into a plastic bag. The people who work here actually look like they don't hate their job. They offer cakes and sweets in the displays which you do have to ask the workers to get for you but I think those items are more fragile and delicate. The pastries are pricier than Chinatown bakeries but you do get what you pay for. I failed to mention how the pastries tasted. They were just as or even better than those in Chinatown. read more

Wow. I almost didn't recognize this shop after a two year stint in Seattle, due to a major renovation that's left this particular location all shiny and modern-looking. Fortunately, aesthetics were the only thing they changed: the pastries are just as I remember, with their pork sung and pineapple breads just as good as they used to be. And, as I continue to recommend to people, their Portuguese egg tarts are still amazingly decadent, especially when they're fresh out of the oven. As a long-time customer, I have to say that the service quality is dropping in the last year or so. Yesterday we bought some buns and breads as usual. The lady at counter basically threw the buns into the small wrapping bags with a twist of her wrist. After the juggling, some of the toppings of course separated from the buns. Some of the buns deformed. And, since her skill was not that good, the buns did not get in fully. She pushed them in with her fingers of the hand that had no glove on!! I was not sure if she was trying to show off her skill of fast packing or what. I only knew that the other bakeries would open the bag and insert the tong and place the bun evenly. This is probably my favorite place to buy Chinese bread that remind me the most of the bakeries in Taiwan. The prices are cheap in comparison to similar bakeries around the area (i.e. Sogo) and because of the amount of customers they have regularly coming in and out of the store, they are always making new bread. I have come many times in the random afternoon when they were putting the newly baked breads into their little cubby holes. The one thing that I think Sogo does better is their Fruit Tart Pies. Sheng Kee doesn't do NEARLY as well when they construct my favorite asian pie. The filling tastes a little odd, there's not as much variety of fruit on top, there's no thin layer of white chocolate at the bottom, and the crust is simply not as flaky as I would like. But anyways, here are my favorite breads from the store: 1. Peanut bread - peanut lovers, this one is for you. The outside is coated with a crunch/smooth peanut sauce that's just so flavorful. The inside, they add this smooth, silky peanut spread. If you pop it in the microwave for just about 15 seconds, you get a giant burst of peanut-y flavor plus the warm bread. Yum! 2. Summer dream romance -.....I think that's what it's called. It's basically a round piece of bread with bluebrry jam in the middle and stuffed with an Asian cream cheese. This was highly recommended by my sister so I tried it even though I don't like cream cheese filling. I tried it and it was soooo delicious. The cream cheese flavor was not as strong or sweet as I thought it would be and the outside is just a little bit crispy if you get it when it comes out. 3. GARLIC BREAD - I love garlic bread. Once they had 4 little pieces of garlice bread packed in a small plastic wrap together and that was BY FAR my favorite thing I've tasted from Sheng Kee. (Maybe I was extra hungry that day...) I got the small Raspberry Mousse cake ($3.75). The mousse and the raspberry gelatin on top were on point. The actual cake part wasn't as light and smooth as I would've liked, but at least it wasn't dry. Overall, the flavors meshed really well and it wasn't too sweet or bland. My husband got my mango mousse cake here. It was ready to pick-up at the time the said and spelled my name correctly with beautiful handwriting. The presentation of the cake was beautiful as well-slivers of white chocolate in white and mango color along the side of the cake with a ribbon to keep it all together and whole glazed strawberries, peaches, and kiwis on top. Just a gorgeous cake. The taste was okay. I've had better but also worse. The mousse was a little too dense for my liking since I usually like mousse to be very light and fluffy. The flavor wasn't enough mango for me either. I wished they had topped slices of mango on the cake, but I don't think it's in season so that's okay. I would definitely come back here to try some of their other pastries and breads. Pricing seemed fair and there's a huge selection. Be careful parking! This shop opens at 8 am pst but it's really not setup with food until 8:30. I was there at 8 when they opened but most shelves were bare. Freshly baked goods are all on carts that's where I ended up getting pastries. The ladies worked there weren't as friendly that early in the morning. I've been a couple times. The first time (before my wheat allergies set in), I tried a bunch of their savory breads and they were great. I'd recommend the oniony one. Their bread loaves look awesome and smell awesome. However I got the Canaan style thick toast and coconut custard breads instead. The thick toast in particular smelled soooooooo freaking good. Like, sweet warm butter on bread. Whenever I walk in the door, it smells like heaven. In fact, I hope that heaven IS a Chinese bakery where everything is free. The baked goods here are always freshly made, and it helps that they are so popular to guarantee fast turnover of the items. The last time I visited, it looked like they had several new varieties. Who knew that there were so many different ways to make a pineapple bun (no pineapple included, ever). This time, I saw one with a chocolate crust in addition to the regular flavor as well as the coconut dusted one. They also had several "seasonal" buns. Prices are high, but the quality is top notch. Another good asian bakery for those looking for variety in not so sweet offerings. We are fortunate to have them along with Kee Wah and 85C. They offer both savory and sweet pastries; I only purchased the sweet ones. Of the many offerings, my favorite is Green Tea Mochi, Purple Romance, and Gold Coast. They also have a limited number of moon cakes in case one has a craving for them. Just like Kee Wah, it's more of a take out place as opposed to 85C.
