I only come here unwillingly at my lactose-intolerant friend's desperate pleas for vegan pastries. First, they're only open on Saturdays. Not trying to be nosy, but how are they affording rent with only one day of business? This results in long lines down the street every Saturday, looking like Best Buy when the Wii dropped in '07! I wish they would change something with their ordering system so their poor patrons don't have to spend their Saturday afternoons waiting in an hour long line in the sun. The times I've been here, we got here before noon but still had to wait an hour+ in line. Recently they've introduced a pre-order system, but some weeks they'll have it and some weeks it's unavailable...very inconsistent. Also, their weeks of business are also inconsistent. Some weeks they're open, some weeks they're not for always some different reason, so make sure you check their IG updates before you come. Now to the food -- I've tried the Hot Dog Bun, Garlic Bun, and croissants. They're all pretty tasty for not having butter and being plant-based and all. Worth waiting an hour for though? That's a no from me! Overall, I like the vegan pastries but their business operations are inconsistent and lines are too long.
This is a long time coming - Tai Zhan is a god send. Being dairy free is tough out here for pastry lovers - My only option was the Whole Foods bakery and then one day my boyfriends dad mentions he walked by a bakery in Saratoga that's vegan - I'm in shock. I go down a Google rabbit hole searching for it to find Tai Zhan - Open on Saturdays. You bet your bottom dollar I'm there on the next Saturday. Two pastry boxes later I'm sitting at a coffee shop down the street with so much pastry I don't know what to do with myself other than weep chocolate tears and wipe crumbs off the table. Everything was good, the chocolate croissant being my favorite. That's my origin story, as sweet as the bakery. Now I head to Tai Zhan anytime I have a sweet tooth, have an event I'm bringing a dish to, as a treat during holidays (they make mini desserts that are a total hit at potlucks), or when I have a friend with a food allergy. I'll find excuses to go to Tai Zhan just because I need a pastry in my life and a friendly staff member to tell me what's new. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Yes the line is long, yes it's a smaller interior but that's part of the charm!! Good things come to those who wait, so catch me waiting in line for these pastries because they are worth it!!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Highly recommend!!
I visited Tai Zhan on a Saturday afternoon after brunch, and by the time we arrived around noon, the line was already quite long. We ended up waiting for about an hour and a half--but it was worth it! Thankfully, there was still a good selection of breads and pastries available when we got to the front. We picked up the pineapple bun, eggless tart, green onion bun, and black sesame bun. Tai Zhan is a fully plant-based bakery, so the flavors and textures lean a little lighter--less buttery, less sweet--which is to be expected. That said, I really admire how they've recreated nostalgic Asian bakery flavors I grew up with in Taiwan, all in a plant-based way. Our favorite was hands down the green onion bun! We're definitely planning to come back to try more items. Currently, they're only open two days a week at the moment, so make sure to check their website or social media for the most up-to-date hours.
Amazing little bakery in the heart of downtown Saratoga! Honestly, you would not believe that it is completely plant-based and vegan. The stuff they make is creamier and smoother than most regular patisseries out there, and tastes very light and clean due to the plant-based origins as well! The hours are a little tricky to line up, although they did start providing some availability on Fridays as well. I will be back for sure whenever I am in the area on Fridays/Saturdays, and do hope that they continue to expand staffing and availability in the future! That coconut cream bun was such a throwback to my childhood days at 99 Ranch. Perfectly executed, and I could seriously not believe it was completely vegan. I am beginning to change my mind on vegan desserts after visiting this place...
I was torn between two and three stars - and opted for three (it's a small business that's serving a need for vegan options, and it really isn't fair to compare a bakery using only plant-based ingredients with ones that can use animal products). But it definitely hit a few sour notes for me, and this isn't my standard flavor palate. Open only a few hours each week - and without online orders - but surprisingly busy on a Saturday afternoon. By 2 PM, there's fewer selections, and much of it is room temperature. As other reviewers noted, it's great if you're missing Chinese bakeries and are vegan. But for a curious passerby, it might be a skip.
First heard of them when I saw them as a vendor for the San Jose Japantown Farmer's Market. By the time I got there that summer Sunday morning, they only had their pesto cheese croissant left. We bought 2 and enjoyed them. Fast forward to the Saturday after Halloween when I found myself in the area again. I arrived shortly after opening and there were only 2 other parties in front of me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everything was beautifully arranged in their display case, and they were very patient with each customer as they had questions about the specials.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I made myself only pick 5 as I knew that I would want everything. Our favorites were the green onion bun and the pumpkin almond croissant followed by the egg tart. The chocolate things were good but not as big of a wow effect. Since they are only open Saturdays it might be a while before I can make it back, but they are a delicious vegan baked good option!
Yumm. I heard about Tai Zhan from a coworker who mentioned she'd come here especially for the vegan Hong Kong style breads and pastries. I've never had vegan Asian bakery goodies before so I was intrigued. We ended up visiting mid-afternoon on a Saturday when they were open. There were just 3 types of pastries left when we entered, but the lady in front of us grabbed most of them. We were lucky to snag one of the last remaining pineapple buns though. At $6 a pastry, these buns cost a pretty penny and definitely would qualify as a once in a while treat splurge for me. I was hoping to try some other flavors too and the "egg" tart, but guess that'll be further down the line :) The pineapple buns itself was MARVELOUS. I could not believe that it was completely vegan! It had the delicious buttery soft flavor and texture of Asian bakery buns. The pineapple topping was sweet and perfectly crumbly. It could totally pass as a normal non-vegan bakery buns! Super impressed with the texture and flavor. I hope to one day also try the egg tarts, green onion bread, and other buns. Great job Tai Zhan!
My friend and I stopped by recently on a Sunday they were specially open. There was a medium sized line out the door that was moving relevatively efficiently. When we got the front we were able to see all the beautiful pastries still available and their names with labels for allergens. My friend has a cashew nut allergy and the server was incredibly helpful and diligent to doublecheck on all the pastries. I really appreciated her doing that even with the line behind us. I ended up getting the mushroom and spinach croissant and my friend got the black sesame pastry and the coconut creme stuffed pastry. We waited out front until our name was called about 5 min later and picked up our box at the counter. My favorite was probably the mushroom and spinach croissant. All of them unfortunately were not necessarily dry but tasted on the dry side compared to pastries I'm accustomed to, perhaps its because they are vegan. Overall, I think these are great vegan options and love that this place is serving that community but as someone that's not vegan, not sure I feel like I'd need to return.

I'll hold back from commenting on the food because it isn't fair to compare against our expectations for bakery with animal products-based ingredients. 30 minutes minimum wait since they are open 4 hours every week.
I have been following and eating my way through Tai Zhan since I picked up my order in some random facial place parking lot. I strongly suggest following them on IG or signing up for their mail so you know when they are closed, have a pre-order box only or they are open with their full case of goodies. After a long hiatus (it's me and my horrible weekend timing) finally was able to pick up a preorder box. DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The sample chestnut cuppie was delightful. Their gingerbread loaf was just the right amount of spice, I hate using the terms springy and moist but this mini loaf was both. If you happen to have Van Leeuwen Vegan Cinnamon Roll Ice cream and you eat it along the gingerbread it will change your life. Tai Zhan focaccia is one of my favorites- I could eat a whole tray if one was left unattended. I am trying to space out all of the goodies but who am I kidding... they will be gone before Monday. May the parking gods be in your favor!
Good quality Asian style bakery! I saw this place online and was super excited to try it. We were in town for three days and went on both Friday and Saturday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Saturday is super busy so make sure to come early![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I mostly came for the egg tart since I loved egg tarts before I become vegan. It's is not an egg tart but a coconut tart. It tastes good but nothing like an egg tart. The crust is very delicious. The pastries were all pretty good. The green onion bun was a bit disappointing and needs a lot more green onion flavour. Everything is pretty delicious and I'd go back for sure. I saw a lot of reviews saying it's not fair to compare this bakery to a bakery that uses animal products and I think that's ridiculous. You can 100% compare Tai Zhan to any other bakery. This is an Asian style bakery not a French or American style bakery. I used to eat a lot of Asian bread from various bakeries and this place is legit!

Would recommend preordering because they sell out fast and to check their schedule online. Love that everything's plant-based / vegan. Arrived 20 minutes prior to the store opening and a line was slowly forming (2 people in front of me) I didn't realize the bakery had an instagram presence as I found them on Yelp. The bakery was doing pickups for pre-orders for Valentine's Day and Lunar New Year. They were quite busy when they opened at 12pm with a line forming immediately upon opening. The pastries are incredible. It's amazing that all of them are dairy free! I often miss out on pastries because they contain butter and milk. I haven't had safe-for-me pastries this fresh and tasty in years! The monkey bread was beautiful- a perfect balance of soft bread and crisp sugary shell on the monkey bread. The strawberry cream croissant was flakey/crisp on the outside and fluffy with the different croissant layers. The strawberries added a fresh and ever so slightly tart flavor. read more

Been wanting to grab some pastries from here for a while now. Visited on a Saturday and there was a line at the front. A good spot for vegans, not sure if it's worth paying so much for these pastries tho. Flavors were not bad, but need some getting used to. read more

What a great find! Stumbled upon here to see the delicious pastries which reminds me of the Chinese bakeries but with a twist, plant based! First off, great little place with cute decor! Very simple and modern. Service was great! The person working was very nice and friendly. Ordered the green onion bun, garlic butter bun, and the rhubarb. It was delicious! Obviously it doesn't taste the same like your usual Chinese bakery but it was very tasty! The garlic butter truly melts in your mouth and it was warm as well. The green onion wasn't overpowering at all and the mayo or whatever it was complement the bun well! And to top it off was that rhubarb which I totally recommend. Great place! read more

Wendy and Keith are so awesome. I discovered Tai Zhan on IG. They're only open Sats 12-4pm. I try to come right at 12pm. There's street parking and also a parking lot behind the building. This place is my fave bakery. I love the chocolate chip cookies. They're pretty bomb for vegan. I've tried matcha bun, black sesame bun, hazelnut bun, pumpkin almond tart, chocolate custard tart, etc. There can be a line but it's def worth the wait! Keith and Wendy are so friendly with me. I like how they have the pastries are on display. I'm so happy you guys exist. I could eat these everyday! And after I eat them, I don't feel bad. They're not that sweet or too heavy for me. read more

Love that there is a vegan bakery out here! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Super cute location and all around the pastries were yummy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I like that it's only 1-2 groups at a time so you're not too crowded inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Only feedback is that I wish they would warm up the pastries. We put our pizza bread in the air fryer when we got back and it was much better. They also cut down their hours quite a bit so make sure to check their website as it can fluctuate. I'd recommend the black sesame and cookies. read more

3.5 STARS If you grew up on Chinese bakeries, brace yourself.... You can't tell your parents how much Tai Zhan's baked goods are, or you'll have to...lie. "Ma, the dan tat is $1.70 not $7...when is the last time you got your eyes checked?" Ok, maybe not unless you want to get yelled at. Initially, I had sticker shock at Tai Zhan's but after thinking about it, I get it. They may the first plant-based Chinese Bakery brick and mortar shop in CA, maybe in the country? Plant-based eats is niche market so they're always more expensive. They require more R&D. Plus, if a pâtisserie can charge $7 for a tart, why can't a Chinese bakery? Lastly, you're supporting a small local business. Tai Zhan opened their first shop in Saratoga in late September. I never made it to their pop-ups so thank you, Dawn B. for this. While there's an abundance of Chinese bakeries in the city, I was very curious to try plant-based versions of HK/Cantonese classics (I'm not a vegan). They're open for takeout only on Saturdays (12 pm - 4 pm). No seating but there's plenty of benches on the street. M E N U HK/Cantonese baked goods and pastries: pineapple bun, green onion bun, coconut bun, hot dog bun, egg tart, etc. There's also French viennoiseries like croissants and kouign amann. Menu changes weekly. Prices: $6-$9. Love that the goods are packed in iconic pink boxes. B A K E D G O O D S ***Spread: https://tinyurl.com/5ce7hj3e * Coconut Cream Bun ($6) Fav of the four items and the one that tasted most like the real deal. Soft bao studded with sweet coconut flakes, generously filled with an airy, rich whipped cream. Not too sweet. Tastes like my childhood. * Pineapple Bun ($6) The bao was denser than the classic bolo bao but it's completely draped in a golden-brown crust. It's always about that sweet, buttery crumbly cookie crust! This one had the proper crunchy texture but drier, not as buttery with a slight coconut taste. Despite its name, there no pineapple in it. The name refers to the golden cross-hatched cookie crust that looks like a pineapple. * Hot Dog Bun ($6) I usually love hot dog buns but this one wasn't a successful vegan dupe. The bun was dry and the vegan sausage had that distinct flavor that I can't describe, you just know it's vegan. * Eggless Tart ($7) Sadly, it was my least fav item that left me craving the real dan tat. While the crust was flaky and crunchy, it was dry with a thin layer of custard that unexpectedly tasted like coconut. It was like 80/20 crust:custard ratio. Maybe it was an off-batch? S E R V I C E Friendly and prompt service with only two customers in front of me around lunchtime. A M B I A N C E Takeout only operation with the goods nicely displayed in a glass case. P A R K I N G Street parking. Overall, while not everything I tried was a hit, I appreciate businesses like Tai Zhan bringing their HK/Cantonese baked goods to the South Bay where there are very few locally owned Chinese bakeries. If you're looking for clean ingredients, friendly staff, and beautifully crafted baked goods, Tai Zhan is the place to go. Every pastry is made with care, and you can really see the team's attention to detail as they deliver on their mission of bringing a sense of joy and happiness through their baked creations. Since they operate as a pop-up, be sure to check their Instagram @taizhan.bake or website for hours before you visit. When I went shortly after they opened, the wait was about 35 minutes. The line moved quickly, and the staff were attentive and happy to answer any questions. (Tip: you can also pre-order on their website to skip the line.) For the treats themselves: - Tiramisu Tart - 10/10, absolutely incredible! - Black Sesame Bun - 10/10, my personal favorite - Chocolate Hazelnut Bun - 8/10, rich in chocolate and satisfying - Matcha Bun - 7/10, solid if you're a matcha fan Overall, you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I always go a bit early because it's fun watching the staff lay all the items out in the case, and it gives me more time to think about what I want to order. I usually order a few things, and then I get home and try really hard to not eat them all in one sitting! read more

We saw a long line outside, so decided to go inside and see what all the hype was about. We ordered a garlic butter bread and a pumpkin almond croissant. Both of the pastries were cold when he got them, which definitely tampered with the experience. TBH, the pastries did not impress me very much. All the pastries are vegan, which was nice. But the garlic butter, bread and croissant were both seeming to lack another dimension of flavor/texture. The croissant had a pumpkin pie, kind of filling inside, but the pumpkin flavor was so slight that it felt like it was kind of watered down? [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is no seating indoors or outdoors, so you have to take it to go.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But there's a lot of parking near the downtown Saratoga area. there was a wide variety of pastries, so I want to try something else in the future, but I wouldn't go for the two that we got today. read more
Cute little bakeshop that has amazing vegan breads. The egg custard tart has the best crust ever!! I wish they were open other days. Currently only open on Saturday mornings. The lines are long but go at a decent speed. Recommend to go at least 15mins before they open. I'll definitely be back here. read more
Love Tai Zhan Bakery! They used to be a pop up, but now are a full blown bakery as of today! All their pastries are vegan, but executed so well you cannot tell the difference. While I love all their items, one of my favorites is their green onion bun. The bun is so well flavored and topped with yummy green onions. Super excited for future return visits to explore their expanded menu over time. Currently they are doing preorders via their website and weekends only. Said they will expand hours and dates as time goes on. Owners were onsite handing out preorders today and were kind enough to explain any menu items to us. read more

One of the best vegan bakery i have came across so far . They have amazing and delicious options available in the store. They serve only on Saturdays from 10am-3pm . We ordered their OG butter garlic bun, green onion bun , Trimashu cake , strawberry croissant and pesto cheese bun . To be honest it is so difficult for me to choose one, i like almost each and every thing what i ordered. Check out Tai Zhan for tasty, plant based treats! I had the chance to try their baked goods at the Love Our Earth Festival, including a green onion bun, pineapple bun, and coconut cream bun. The items were $6 each, so definitely a splurge compared to Asian bakeries serving similar items, but you can tell everything is made from scratch with quality ingredients. I liked the coconut cream bun the best as it had a nice balance of flavors and sweetness. The green onion bun and pineapple bun had a denser texture than I'm used to but tasted good nonetheless. Service was quick and friendly with the owners ringing up customers and packaging orders. I hope to visit their Saratoga storefront soon and try more of their offerings. read more
