This bakery produces the fluffiest most amazing loaves of bread which deserve all 5 stars. Their Taiwan toast is a staple in my kitchen and is how I love to start my morning, paired with salted butter and jam or even at lunch with a tuna sandwich. There's nothing better than enjoying a slice freshly opened from the store, so chewy and pillowy. It's wonderfully satisfying. We recently also learned that their custard loaves are just as heavenly, specifically the pineapple raisin custard toast. A bit of an inaccurate description though--there's no pineapple flavor at all! :) However, we're willing to overlook that detail because the bread is delicious. The crisp strudel that adorns the top of the loaf, the swirls of strudel on each slice, and the smattering of raisins for good measure. It's a dream :) Note that paying by card requires a $5 minimum, but that certainly shouldn't be a problem at this place. They also have a much smaller location inside 99 Ranch on Skyline but stock is usually picked through. read more

After shopping at 99 Ranch I decide walk 10 steps towards the doorless entrance of Sheng Kee Bakery in Daly City and give it a whirl. I originally use to go to the location in San Francisco at Outer Sunset on 20th avenue and Irving . I did get a chance to pick up a Summer romance at this Daly City location which is one of my favorite pastries at Sheng Kee Bakery but the berry jam was kind of lacking and the flavor didn't burst well unlike the Westlake Sheng Kee location in Daly City which has more berry jam and cheese in it . I wish the two Daly City Sheng Kee Bakery locations would mimic each other. I would say Sheng Kee Bakery overall does provide a better Summer romance experience than the 85 degree store at Stonestown in San Francisco. This Sheng Kee also offers carmel( caramel) flan and the delicious savory custard tarts and a good Portuguese custard tart. When we stopped by Skyline Plaza to look for a spice at the Ranch 99 market there it was... the bakery was directly across the cash register checkout counters of the grocery store. We didn't find what we were looking for at the grocery so we headed right across the hallway. The bakery is small but I was the only one there at the moment so I took my time perusing at the variety of baked goods. I made 3 full circles before I decided on the following items: Hotdog & Cheese Bun, Ham & Egg Bun, Paper cupcake, BBQ Pork Bun... all the baked items were individually wrapped, and then at the register I saw their Chicken Pie inside a glass case so I asked to purchase one. You can easily tell which buns are which from their descriptions and from their looks but I didn't know what a Paper Cupcake was. This petite looking cup-shaped paper wrapped is a classic sponge cake. It was soft, fluffy and filled with eggy goodness. Where do I go after grocery shopping and Ranch 99? Yes, the temptation is sometimes too great. Located directly across the 99's cashier counters, this bakery offers a variety of take and go pastries. You start at the far right where there is a display case with cafeteria trays, wax paper, and tongs provided. There are two wall display cases and an island one to explore and choose between savories and sweets, healthy and not so much buns, breads, cookies, and mini cakes. To the far left, there is a refrigerated case with whole cakes. These days, all take and go items are prepackaged so it's now grab and go. I usually buy a variety of buns for my family but, with the lack of exercise and the number of sweets offering places I've visited, I haven't been buying as often or as much. This is also my post lunch and post shopping drink place as I sometimes get a mango green tea for the drive home. Recently, they added a Taiwan staple, tea eggs. This is immediately next to the cash register. If you buy a number of them, I suggest bringing a plastic takeout soup container to pack them. The staff are efficient and courteous. I bought red bean mochi bun, green tea mochi danish, green tea red bean bun, custard tarts, curry pork sung green onion twist, garlic bread, and green tea red bean roll. AVOID , DISGUSTING business practice We're a long term customer. The only reason we bought birthday cake from this place is because my wife likes their french chestnut , so I ordered one and pick up last night. When we open up the cake, we notice the grapes' color is so bad, seems like it's been sitting for over a week(we didn't eat the fruits), that night , we all had diarrhea, throw up all night including my 3 year old daughter. This is not the way to do business. Selling non selling not fresh cake to customer to make them sick is absolutely disgusting. But there are no tongs, I asked one of the workers there, he said just to grab them with your hands since they're all bagged. For those who might be unfamiliar, Sheng Kee is a chain of about a dozen-or-so Taiwanese influenced bakeries in the Bay Area. They have some nice staples like green onion bread, Chinese toast, egg tarts, and also serve drinks and cakes. This location happens to be located inside 99 Ranch Market. While this place may have been a bright spot at some point, the quality and service is long gone. Compared to other bakeries like 85 Degrees or Fancy Wheat Field, I can't say any one of their pastries is unique or better-tasting. Everything feels mass-produced. The manager/more elder lady in charge there always seems to be in a poor mood, and the shop has a $10 minimum for any card use (credit or debit). They also have a weirdly passive-aggressive sign saying they won't accept more than 10 quarters, nickels, or dimes. What a weird, arbitrary line to draw, especially when you already have a minimum for credit card usage. I'm half tempted to pay in 9 coins next time just to see their reaction, but the quality of their pastries is so forgettable I'd actually be doing myself more harm and them. read more

The Sheng Kee Bakery in 99 Ranch got a whole new look, yo! I haven't been to this bakery in a while, but today I made a trip over because my mom bought some bread from there that I just absolutely fell in love with. And ate all of. And needed more.. of. So I made a trip here this morning. The new layout looks clean and well lit. There's cakes on one side of the counter and on the other is where they keep all their different breads and pastries. They keep the trays and tongs on one side and it's not hard to miss so you should be able to find them fast. This place looks like a smaller version of 85 degree bakery. Not going to lie. They have some breads here that look EXACTLY like the ones you can find at the other bakery. Don't know if that's just because all bakeries have the same products or what, but it's pretty cool. Prices here are decent. Some products are cheaper than their 85 degree bakery counterparts. Service was okay. A bit slow, but luckily they have 3 cash registers so sometimes it can move fast. It's really only putting the breads into the individual bags that slow things down. Overall, pfft. I'm coming here again for the bread of my dreams. It's my go-to pastry at Asian bakeries and the level of deception is usually pretty high with this particular bread: though you may see a lot of pork floss and green onion topping the bun, there's a high chance there's nothing inside the bread itself. I can now say after getting 4 pastries from here and digesting all of them in a matter of 10 minutes this place is 2 LEGIT TO QUIT. If you walk in from the main entrance you can find the bakery on the left side. From there you can see all the pastries on display in their cases. From the buns to the croissants they are ample and on full display for you to see. I was surprised by the array of choices here. The prices are extremely fair as well which makes getting a lot of pastries ideal, at least for me. Depending on what time of the day you come in you will either have a lot of options or few, primarily due to customers buying in abundance. The bread loafs here are also amazing. I didn't get a chance to grab a loaf but the custard loaf smells amazing! Oh my, if you only grab one item from here I would suggest getting a loaf. Sheng Kee is another Taiwanese bakery in the mold of 85 degrees Cafe that I'm more familiar with. It is mainly NorCal based and has about 12 location in and around SF. This location is bang opposite 99 Ranch Market so it literally calls my name when I'm visiting 99 Ranch. It seems to be well stocked in the mid-morning hours on weekends. The product mix here is basically different types of bread, pastries, cakes and beverages. Over a period of time I've tried most of their bread and pastries. I've found most of these to be good, but one thing that stands out is that they seem to be a little greasier when compared to other Taiwanese bakeries. Prices for most items range from $1.5 to $3 so it's very reasonable. They do take cards but I think with a $10 minimum, I've had to pay cash most of the time. Overall I think this is a decent bakery for a pit stop but it does not warrant an entire trip for itself. read more

I must have forgotten how good some of the breads and pastries are at Sheng Kee.. there's been an influx of Asian bakeries popping up all around the Bay Area like Tous Le Jours, 85° Bakery, and Fancy Wheat Field bakery. I have been so busy trying things that I haven't been to a Sheng Kee in a long loooong time. I've finally made my way back and while I can't speak for the cakes as I don't really get them from any Asian bakeries, the breads here are really yummy! I got the standard Coconut Cream bread and they also had a promotion running for their coconut roll cake so got that as well. Both were so light, fluffy, and delicious. Not dry which tends to happen sometimes at these types of bakeries. My dad also got some of the small chicken pies which they have in the warmer near the register. One day, after shopping for groceries at Ranch 99, I went to Majikku Ramen for lunch. Then I got a text message from a friend that said "I got mango mousse cake, wanna come over??". Now, I didn't know where she got the cake from, right? So I texted back saying "I'm having lunch at the ramen place by Ranch 99". She replied "Dude! I'm in the parking lot right now!" We buy cakes here because my family doesn't really like American types of cakes that are overly sweet. Asian cakes, and especially the ones at Sheng Kee Bakery, have the right amount of sweet and neutral flavors working together. I think they usually go for about $19-25 or so. I was visiting a friend who lived near by and being the ever polite Asian, I was desperate to buy something so I won't arrive empty handed. Like my mother is fond of saying, bringing the two bananas (a euphenism for your empty hands) to someone's house is rude. So we swung by SK's at the chinese mall to pick up some pastry. I am so sticker shocked over the prices for their not so fresh cakes (not so fresh meaning the frosting has been in the fridge so long that there are cracks!). Seriously, almost $30 for chinese cake?!?!? The prices for their buns aren't a bargain either (everything starts at $1+). If I bought a dozen, that would put me out of a FiDi lunch experience and then some. Ah, I was desperate so I found the most reasonable thing for my friend (a mocha roll that put me out about $4+). I also grabbed a loaf of raisin bread for breakfast. Mocha roll is on the cloying sweet side. Sorry but it tasted funky, like they put some additive in it (Yes my friend served the roll to us). Bread is nothing to write home about. It sorta deflates in your mouth upon entry. Service is piss poor. The cashier sorta refuses to make eye contact with you.
