Sherpa is such a great indian/nepalese restaurant. I love the chicken tikka masala, some of the best I've had. And their garlic and cheese naan is also some of the best I've had. Sherpa's is not your run of the mill Northern Indian restaurant. With menu items you can't find in other places and a relaxed atmosphere, it's a welcome addition to the Boulder restaurant scene. But... after a few visits we've learned to pick and choose. The food quality is mixed, with some menu items much better than others. The sag and naan appetizer is exceptional, for example and the chai is the best in town. Go early if you're interested in the lunch special. Otherwise, you'll be eating something that's likely overcooked. Oh, and plan for much conversation and a long meal. Sherpa's is an interesting restaurant in the fact that it's in a house that also serves as a place where you can go and plan your expedition adventures. However this is about the restaurant itself. The atmosphere is appropriate for getting you in the vibe of having some Nepalese. Like it's geographic location, the menu is filled with Indian and Pakistani dishes in addition to Nepalese (which itself has heavy Indian influences mixed with an assortment of common Asian spices in the tastes). Overall while I didn't find it the most extraordinary, the food along with the friendly sherpa service and atmosphere of the restaurant made for a enjoyable time. I wouldn't exactly say it's a draw, but it does stand out from some of the other places in Boulder. read more

The same thing applies to restaurants, in my opinion. Sometimes it's better to write a review when all the details are fresh in your mind, but sometimes it's OK to wait and reflect on a meal you had months ago. You may not really remember what you had, but you'll remember how you felt. That's what goes through my mind as I think about Sherpa's. Sherpa's is a little Nepalese, Indian, and Tibetan restaurant in a building that looks like it used to be a house. There's a little library with books on traveling and hiking, a small bar, tables downstairs and upstairs (a private room), and a beautiful outdoor patio. It's a unique space. On this particular July night, the house was kind of empty, but the patio was packed with lively diners and handsome waiters. My friends and I sat outside at a corner table with a view of everything. We spent our night eating, drinking, sharing stories, laughing, and feeling completely content. Our drinks were perfect, my vegetable curry was delicious (I ate everything), and the garlic naan was amazing. There was a raging party in my tummy and my wallet didn't break down and cry. Although nothing really stands out as, "WOW," I can not think of anything about Sherpa's that I didn't like. If I find myself back in Boulder again, you can bet I'll find my way here again! read more

This is a nice little spot! The prices are very reasonable and the food is very fresh. I got the Chicken Kabob Tandoori. The flavor was good and the portion size was great, but some of the pieces of chicken I had were a little rubbery. The peppers and onions would have been better if they were cooked more. I don't come as a very aggressive, demanding person when it comes to hospitality. Mainly because I have a bunch of friends working in the restaurant business and I completely understand their sky-rocketed stress levels. But this event at Sherpa's made me feel ill-treated and I finally resorted to pen down my terrible experience. p.s Those restaurant friends of mine actually asked me to post a review Sunday, Feb 18th 8:30 pm, a friend and I, walk into the restaurant with shivers from the unpredictable Boulder weather. Sherpa's was half full with around 20 customers, I guess. We were aware that the place closes by 9:30, so we cut down our initial conversation and pick the menu. At 8:45 the waiter says the kitchen is closing and this would be your last order. Unsure whether to pre-order desserts, before having your meal or at least halfway through, we chose not to order them (though I had a little craving). So we order two stuffed naan, paneer tikka masala, and chicken tikka masala. Stuffed naan was really amazing; the tikka masalas were moderate (Overall, no complaints about the food). Halfway through the meal, at around 9:00 pm, things started getting weird. It started off with a waitress dropping off the check on the table (not the waiter, who took our order). 5 minutes later, she comes back and asks if you're done with the check. I replied, we aren't done with our food yet, she walks away with a grim. 5 minutes later, we're at 9:15, she started turning the lights off, baring just the one on our table. At 9:15, other employees pack their bags and started leaving from work. The ambiance created a very negative vibe of kicking us out. At 9:20, she comes again and asks if you need to-go-boxes, and she squeezes in a stack on the already-filled-table. This time, I thought I should get the check done, though we are not finished with our meal. So I pay her off (with tip) at 9:20 in hopes of easing out her hostility. The whole time, I was trying myself to keep it cool and give my partner a good time - I did not want to spoil the vibe at any cost. By 9:25, we were out of the restaurant, pushed out by all means, other than words. Of course, we weren't planning to stay for a second beyond 9:30, the official closing time. I don't want to come out clichéd by saying, "don't go here, or I'm never going there again". I am only asking Sherpa's to take care of hospitality, if not hostility, and not destroy the hard work that is put into the kitchen. read more

Was in Boulder, Colorado for a little bit and wanted some healthy food that could be as vegan/pescetarian as possible! For an appetizer I ate Onion Pakora and for the main course, Saag (non dairy which they accommodated for me) with shrimp. The food was overall good and the service was also nice =). Boulder is filled with quality Himalayan restaurants, and Sherpa's is among the best. The setting is an old Victorian house with seating in a few of the small rooms. So, as you can imagine, it's cozy and homey. The food is consistently delicious - the veggie momos are my favorite. The lunch specials are one of the best deals in town - dal, entree, and nan for under $10. During warm weather you can sit on the patio for lunch or dinner, a real treat. My buddy and I stopped in for lunch on the patio as a break to forest road motorcycle riding today. Did not know what we were in for but decided to give it a try. My buddy is Vegan so no problem with a delicious Tofu and Potato Curry I think it was Aloo... I had a chicken Curry with Basmati rice and Dahl lentil soup... delicious and just $9!!! We were very happy with lunch. Service a bit on the cool side, but not bad. No, "welcome" or, "thank you" but not rude or anything. Staff could probably use a customer service seminar or something... While I enjoyed the food, I can only give three stars, because I don't have the option to give 3.5 stars. It's an old house that was converted into a restaurant. They have seating inside and outside and I noticed that lot of the customers liked seating outside in the patio... we opted to seat inside. Ordered the Tibetan Noodles with lamb and Tibetan dumplings with beef and chicken. Also ordered the Naan stuffed with garlic and other seasoning. The Tibetan noodles is thick Chinese noodle stir fried with some vegetables and the lamb meat... There wasn't a 'wow' factor and I had to wonder if I could get this if I ever visited Tibet... but I guess maybe it was adapted for the locals?? I don't know... the dish was still nice. I could recommend you wrap the lamb meat with the naan, yum :) The Tibetan dumplings tasted like normal Chinese dumpling... it was greasy, but if you add the sauce on top, it gives it a unique flavor. Not sure if I would order this next time. The service was good, the waiter came by from time to time to check on us to see how we were doing. There were four of us where we all ordered something different. Three out of the four looked like the same orange dish. The fourth one was the creamed spinach chicken dish. Nothing special, but good for the mild, wimpy folks (okay, that's me). Happy hour was $2 tap beers. We all had a sherpa ale. I thought it was pretty darn good even though I am not much of a beer drinker. Owners of this place and the Sherpa House in Golden are apparently brothers. What a nice restaurant! not too far from Pearl st. Most guide books recommend stopping in Boulder to try this and we did exactly that when driving back to Denver from RMNP. We had a great time sitting outside in balmy 70s. Yum momos!! They even carry Yak momos although we didn't try those - wonder where the Yak meat comes from?! Making our way over from the world famous Dark Horse, my beautiful dinner companion and I headed over to Sherpa's. How can one explain the exquisite wonder of this historic establishment... The service was expediant and friendly, the outdoor dininig area was pleasantly arranged and inviting, and the food was incredible. I have visited this restaurant on and off since it opened, most recently today and before that about a decade ago. It is a charming place, the people are so very friendly but this cuisine is not in my most favored spice profiles. I do like a variety of world cuisines and often trek far and wide to find those I love and yet this restaurant is so close by but unfortunately a cuisine that doesn't really suit me, no matter how well prepared. I do accompany friends here when they choose it so I can continue to experiment with the menu. It has a lovely garden setting for when the weather is good and a bit snug inside when needed. I do always find something on the menu I can have. Today I had some very nice dumplings and naan. Since the sauces are on the side for dipping, I am able to taste just enough. But the broad spectrum of the menu is out of my abilities. I am just sensitive to many curry preparations. My serving was ample for lunch and at a very modest price. So many people flock to this place and I am glad they do. I followed a big group in today and it is clear that Sherpa's has a strong customer base of regulars and has for a long time. The pakoras were just fried broccoli. The samosas were bland. I chose the lamb vindaloo as my entree- and it was SWEET. Not extra-spicy, as I requested. Straight-up sweet. What a disappointment. The saag paneer was a flavorless chopped up bowl of spinach. Bleh. Three stars because I do really want to like it here. I'll add a third voice to the crowd: I also really WANTED to like this place. I wanted to like it so much that I actually took my free-spirited adventurer ex-boyfriend here for Valentines Day once AFTER I had already been there once and hated it. 'I must have gone on an off day!' I rationalized to myself. 'How can such a cool place stuffed with books and adventuring souvenirs have bad food? I'm sure it doesn't. I'm sure I just ordered the wrong thing!' Unfortunately - everything I've ever ordered there ever is deep fried and coated with the exact same orange spice. I don't really have a problem with the orange spice per se, I mean, it's tasty and all, sort of, but an overload of it will give you serious digestive ills. All you want to do after a meal of it is go down 5 Jamba Juices to restore the freshness. The one thing I ordered that didn't have the orange spice were the Tibetan momos... which instead were boring. I've had momos before, both at the tiny and charming, if unsteady, Tibet Kitchen on Folsom and Arapahoe, and when I was in college, taking Anthropology of Tibet - our teacher had the class over to her house to handmake momos. Both of these were better. So as an adventurers' lounge - I'm sure it's great. How can you beat knowledge and advice from people who've actually led expeditions in the Himalayas? But I'm reviewing the restaurant, and unfortunately I just have no appetite for it. read more

"Best Nepalese food anywhere".... seriously? I challenge anyone who makes such a statement to prove that they've ever really eaten Nepalese ANYWHERE else. The food was mediocre at best. I see the word "bland" in several other reviews. Pretty much sums it up, in comparison to other Nepali restaurants. And I've eaten at a TON of them - numerous times! Service... truthfully a challenge to get ANY. Waiters were more intent on sitting around at the bar, drinking Chai with each other, than they were at filling OUR cups. Or, even take our order, for that matter... needless to say, they received zero tip - which is something that I RARELY do. Speaking of zeros - why won't Yelp let us give zero stars? Since I gotta give one star - I do have to admit that the Dahl soup was decent (we had to remind a random passing waiter that we'd ordered it - since our waiter was nowhere to be found).... and, the Chai was actually pretty good (even though it was only luke warm)... when we could get the attention of a passing waiter to fill our cups on his way to the bar. We've given this place more than enough chances - four times in the last couple of years. It's never been anything better than bland.... our experiences have gone progressively downhill - but this last attempt was THE absolute worst dining experience that we've had since moving to Boulder four years ago. So, if you read about this place in a guidebook and consider stopping in when you're "passing through" Boulder - do yourself a favor - don't succumb! There are MANY excellent Nepalese restaurants in the area - scattered at all points of the compass, depending on the direction that you're coming from or going to. A few of my favorites - Kathmandu in Nederland, Everest Cafe in Longmont, Gurkhas in Gunbarrell, Nepal Cuisine on Table Mesa, Nepal's Cafe in Estes Park, etc, etc.... do yourself a favor (especially if this is your first try at Nepali food) try it at one of these places and you'll taste what it's really about. read more

Bland is an understatement. We asked for everything to be hot but it came out milder than anything I've tasted at any Indian restaurant in the past. The chicken is very rubbery and tastes a little freeze dried. The sauces are fairly tasteless and non-unique. We had the Tibetan dumplings; the vegetarian ones were terrible while the chicken was so-so. It's a nice little house converted into a restaurant with fun little pictures of people climbing (what I assume is) Mt. Everest. The waiters seem to be "authentic" (the right blend of Indian/Mongolian/Chinese/Tibetan), which is a plus. They close at 9 pm regardless of whether you're eating or not, which is a minus. read more

Was really looking forward to dinner there, but was overall dissapointed. The atmosphere is nice - I like the house and the cozy feel. Service was nice, but slow as all get out. They had like two waiters for the whole place, so you can imagine how long it took to get anything. Now onto the food - order the naan, chai and kir. That is all. So do they do breakfast? That would be be good as maybe then can manage a fried egg too. The entrees are blah. I got the Biryani lamb - terrible. The meat was so overdone that I wasn't sure it was lamb. Rest of the dish was like Chinese fried rice - okay. My girlfriend got the Sherpa Sampler Vegetarian platter of saag, vegetables, chutney, nann & kir. Meh... Saag was decent and so was the chutney, same for the kir. The weird, orange vegetable thing did not impress at all. I think it was $14, which seems kinda pricey for that. Yes, unfortunately, the rumors are true...this place could do better. The appetizers and entrees alike are pretty bland and somehow...clumsy. Although fans may call them subtle and those more fond of British or American cuisine may even think them exotic. But rest assured, you will not find much by way of herbs or spices here. The creations seem more like rough sketches than finished works of art. Take the saag for example; it's effectively whole leaves of wilted spinach with a meat (or cheese) accompaniment; you can certainly toss on some salt or pepper if you're truly desperate, but if you were hoping for some turmeric, cumin, coriander, cardamom, and/or clove to greet your nostrils, you're going to have use a little imagination. It has been awhile since I've been here, but as with most restaurants I visited several times over the course of a few years in order to give it the benefit of doubt. Even our favorite restaurants have off nights. But sadly I never really had an "on" night at Sherpa's. As Consumer Reports might say, "there are better choices." read more

The outside dining makes for a really nice atmosphere and I wanted to like the place a lot more than I did. I am not sure, but I have made the mistake of ordering an Indian dish, but seeing as the menu is full of them I figured it would be ok. It was probably the worst saag paneer I have ever had. Saag is supposed to be a creamy blend of spinach and spices, but this was food processed spinach that lacked cream of any kind. I asked for mine hot and it was not even medium in spiciness. The entree came with a side of daal soup and it was also flavorless and lacked any whole lentils. We also started with the vegetable samosa, which are one of my all time favorite foods, but these were flavorless potatoes wrapped in and fried. There was a severe lack of spice and mix of other vegetables usually present. The naan was the highlight of the meal and was pretty good. The basmati was unspiced as well. The service was rushed, maybe because we arrived at 8:30pm. We were rudely told to sit where ever by the someone who seemed to be the manager or owner, but there were no tables available. We then spoke to the servers and were seated at a table that had not been wiped down. When we sat the manager guy promptly came and angrily washed the table with a rag. It took forever for us to place our orders. When we finally received our entrees, we were rushed and the manager kept trying to clear our plates while we were still eating- huge pet peeve of mine. I doubt that I will ever go back after this experience, but the ambiance is definitely nice. Maybe other choices on the menu are better. read more

Due to local and covid restrictions, they are doing outdoor dining. Everyone was very friendly and the food was exceptional but I feel like almost all the food we ordered has sweet in it. Solid lunch option with a daily special that is about $8. Comes with choice of veggie option (aloo gobi?) or meat option (Chicken Tikka Masala). Lunch comes with dahl, rice, naan. They also provide a complimentary basket of pappadum, which are baked lentil wafers with yogurt and chutney dipping sauces. They also have great momo's which are a Tibetan dumpling. My favorite dish was channa masala, a garbanzo based dish that is no longer on the menu, that is the reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. The atmosphere is interesting as is located in a historic house a couple of blocks from the Pearl St. Mall. If you are staying at the St. Julien it's a block to the west and worth a visit. read more

I haven't been impressed by the quality of the food. I would say that the average ingredients they use are pretty cheap. We were an italian, a burmese and an indian. The indian and burmese found the food totally untasty and far from their expectations. The curry tasted of tomato paste and the italian could confirm it. Also weird enough we all had to go to the toilet soon after eating there. I kind of suspect that the star this place collected reflect more the simpaty of the local for Nepalese / Tibetan issues rather then effective quality of the food. Only my entree was 15$, I can go to the 10$ indian buffet in ganbarrel and have the same poor quality. read more
