Shiki Sushi is a great stop for groups and locals. I can't say it'd be on my "must try" list for a tourist, but as far as South Durham options, this is a great bet. During another visit this past weekend, our party of six did a family style meal: three entrees, an appetizer and four sushi rolls. The restaurant is really big, and service is slow although great when they're interacting with you. I was really surprised by the amount of people waiting to be seated on a Friday night at 7:30p, but we got a table within fifteen minutes [they only take reservations for parties of 7+]. There were actually several empty tables inside, but I think since the restaurant is so large, they might have been light on waiters and thus couldn't seat at all the empty tables. Shiki has a great drink selection including a surprisingly good list of craft beers. We started with the crab rangoons, a perfect appetizer for a large group as six come on a plate. For entrees we ordered Panang Curry with shrimp, Basil Duck and Drunk Noodles with beef. Honestly, I was impressed that all three of these entrees were delicious. The Panang curry was spicy but the coconut milk offset that with some sweetness. The basil duck was full of crunchy asparagus and the duck very tender. And the drunken noodles had lot of match stick slices of peppers, tender beef and those fat, delicious noodles. Shiki has a buy one get one sushi deal [like most of the sushi restaurants in the area!], we ordered four: eel fashion roll, fabulous roll {inside out with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper topped with avocado, blue crab and sriracha}, tom yum roll {inside out with tempura shrimp, cucumber and blue crab topped with shrimp, tom yum sauce and lemon zest} and the Shiki crunch roll. The eel and crunch rolls were my favorite, but they were all really flavorful! Shiki Sushi is a little pricy [8-piece rolls and entrees are about $15-$17/plate or roll] but they have an e-mail club and offer coupons in some of the "local" coupon books. Overall, it's a great place for a group meal with a nice atmosphere and while large, not overly noisy. I would recommend staying away from the pho and going for sushi or an Japanese/Thai entree. read more

I'm pretty sure Shiki Sushi is the oldest sushi bar in Durham. I'm not 100% sure about that, but it's the first (and only) place people told me to go to for sushi when I first moved out here. They are the inventors of the Buy 1 Roll, Get 1 Free offer for sushi places. (I just made that up too, but didn't it sound good?) :) Anyway, they are a large restaurant, which is always packed when I want to go eat. I mean lunchtime or dinner, it's always packed! They expanded last year or late 2008, but it's still sooo busy. Not knocking it, it just goes to show how popular they are. It's got a great location, a chic atmosphere, lots of room (which makes it pretty loud), and a great menu. I've never had a sushi roll I didn't like, their seaweed salad is excellent, and the other main dishes are also pretty good. While they're located in a shopping center & they have outdoor seating, I wouldn't suggest sitting outside. The atmosphere outside isn't great - there's really no good people watching, there's a major road right there, and it just feels like a way they could pack in some more customers. I will only come here if my amateur Americanized-sushi loving friends are on a budget and want to dine here. Otherwise, I choose never to come here on my own. From the servers to the hostesses to even the managers, the service here is the absolute worst! They all will talk back and give you attitude when THEY themselves do not know anything about the menu, ingredients, what is 86ed, how to find your reservation when you definitely made one, but they're arguing with you that you didn't, yet later finds it written in the back of a dinky notebook....I mean, "reservation list"; some servers don't even know what a POS system is?! They call it....a little computer. Sassy Shiki service... It takes all of my patience and self-control to eat here....maybe I need to educate my friends on actual decent sushi restaurants OR get myself some foodie friends. read more

I miss the pre-expansion Shiki. I used to pop in here for a girls' get-together or a pre-movie date, but that convenience is long gone. Despite the extra space and added tables since expanding, Shiki is crowded and there's nearly always a wait. I guess I couldn't expect buy-one-get-one-free sushi in the Southpoint area to stay a secret for long. I'll admit I'm less likely to come here now because it's become such a trendy place to go for sushi (accredit that to its location, its BOGO deal, and the lusted after sushi boats [wooden boats that your sushi is served on when you order a large quantity]). But I also think the service and even the sushi is on a downward trend. The pros are free green tea, an enormous list of sushi rolls, and swanky atmosphere; but for a bit more quality and a lot less traffic, you'll find me grubbing down on sushi in Raleigh or Carrboro. read more

Review #200 comes with a theme....honesty and reputation. And that's the reason for this 4 star review. Let me elaborate..... I came here on a weekday late afternoon lunch with a co-worker where we proceeded to order some rolls and several pieces of nigiri up at the sushi bar. The model/gimmick they employ here is simple, but effective - buy 1 order of rolls, pieces of sushi/sashimi and get the 2nd order of equal or lesser value for free. To maximize your most-bang-for-the-buck MO, it's best to just order 2 of the same to get it effectively at half price. It's a subtle model difference than other "half price sushi" paradigms, but that's not why I'm giving this place 4 stars. The food came out promptly on a large plate. We ordered two 5 piece rolls (a spider and a volcano roll) as well as several pieces of nigiri - eel (unagi), yellowtail (hamachi) and tuna. Good size portions - enough to feed 2 hungry males. Couple this together with a hot pot of decent green tea[1] and we seemed set for a filling lunch. Overall quality was decent (not spectacular) except for the tuna which was probably the most disappointing part of the meal - very pale and pink. No fresh dark red variety of tuna here. But that's not unheard of for this caliber of sushi nor is it a reason to give this place a 4 star review. Here's the reason for my 4 star review. At check out, we decided to split the check equally. Our waitress was very agreeable and did so with no problem. Doing so, we each took care of our half. The price was on par with the area for sushi....not cheap and maybe a bit on the high side. I tipped more than 15%, but less than 20% on the card based on the total taxed portion of the bill and kept my receipt leaving fairly satisfied about the whole experience putting it a notch above some of the other sushi places we've eaten nearby, but not spectacular - prolly more 3 star than 4. Fast forward to 2 days later....I checked my CC statement and noticed that the bill I was charged for that day was $1 more than I had recalled signing off on. Incredulous, I double checked my receipt in my wallet and verified that I had written down an amount different than what appeared on my statement. WTF? Not that I'm one to complain about an extra $1 tacked on to my bill, but on principle alone I was horrified to know that someone was willing to essentially steal money from a paying customer. Seriously, in this day and age, why would someone add an insignificant amount to anyone's bill expecting it to go unnoticed? [2] Regardless, I called up SS with my receipt in hand to inquire about the discrepancy with the manager. What impressed me the most was the way they handled the matter - they acknowledged the issue and corrected it also offering to do more (discounts, etc) to appease me after a bit of sleuthing on their part, of course.[3] Frankly, I was more concerned about the "honesty" issue and the potential of a recurring problem there with any waitstaff and/or other customers than anything else. So I declined any other incentives they offered me - opting only for the corrected charge. I realize this is something that should be expected and normal, but in this day and age, sometimes the normal decency of customer service is overlooked. Not in this case....and I appreciate the gestures and the way this issue was resolved the most - esp. with the manager. That to me, is worthy of a 4 star review and a sure fire reason I would come back to eat here. [1] unfortunately, they didn't have the green tea powdered Matcha that I would've preferred, despite my inquiries. [2] I had flashbacks of the days I had to grade lab reports/quizzes/tests as a grad student...when some students would copy verbatim (with mistakes) the exact same answer from another student and turn it in thinking that I wouldn't notice anything. A very unassuming, slightly hidden location reveals one of the Triangle's best kept (but not for long!) secrets. When I first moved to Raleigh I was taken here on a date and I fell in love (with the rolls, not my date) in the first minute. The bland, tasteless, unassuming exterior gives way to an aesthetically pleasing and very hip interior. The stone effaces, dramatic lighting and plasma screen tvs raise the upscale factor without raising the price of the overall experience. You should note: as of recent, this place has become very crowded (a testament to their product), especially on weekend nights, so reservations are a must. However, if you are comfortable sitting at the bar (the drink one, not the sushi one) you can get a seat for one or two fairly quickly. Other than that, prepare for a wait if you show up unannounced. However, I rarely drove over from Raleigh to marvel at their smooth granite counter tops. The food is what brings me coming...over and over and over :) The best part about Shiki is their creative roll selection and generous portions. I am a big guy and two rolls of any kind fill me to the brim. The menu is set up in a "buy one get the lesser priced roll free" format...all day, every day. This is a pretty great deal considering the most expensive (and in my opinion, the best) roll is around $17 bucks. Not bad for walking out the door with top notch, fresh catch. Another small detail to be wary of: If eating with a group, they WILL NOT split checks; for example, if your group buys four rolls (and receives four free), they will naturally charge you for the four most expensive of the lot. A smart business practice, no doubt, but a detail that they don't privy you upon ordering My favorite rolls are the Sumo (UN-REAL), the Merry and the Wasabi, followed closely by anything else. There hasn't been a single trip where I have lleft hungry or unsatisfied. I will honestly say that from coast to coast (and I've eaten sushi from San Luis Obispo to Miami and back), that this is one of the best sushi places I have been to. The quality, service, price, presentation, atmosphere all lead to creating "raving fans" of my friends and I. Shiki Sushi is my go-to sushi joint. I am loyal to it despite the presence of Sushi Love, which is closer to Duke (and the fact that they are owned by the same people and have almost identical menus). We always try to muster the largest group possible so we can try a ton of different rolls (courtesy of the BOGO) and guarantee the sushi being served on the wooden boats! I guess I love Shiki bc of the BOGO, the boats and the special rolls. We always order the Mary, the wasabi, the nemo, the crunchy and the volcano. Those are the perpetual favorites. (We dont ever order the plain rolls though bc then you aren't getting your money's worth.) Sadly, when I went to Shiki yesterday, the server said the boats were retired. We had 16 people and no boat! Like I said in my previous review, I come here a lot. And it's great. But this past weekend, my now husband and I hosted a family dinner for 40 people here after our wedding reception and the service we received was exceptional. As soon as my husband and I arrived, we were greeted by the location manager and the COO, who came and made sure our private dining room was set up exactly how we wanted. The waiters assigned to us were extremely attentive and our water glasses were always filled. This is quite an attractive restaurant, but pop music was playing too loudly. It was chilly, my hands never warmed up. I ordered the lunch hibachi rib eye. The food was very disappointing. The meat was tough & in big chunks that were much larger than one bite. I had to request a steak knife. I ordered med rare but it came well done. The miso soup was tasty but only had 3 tiny pieces of tofu in it. The fried rice was just a pile of rice. I found one carrot piece, and one sliver of zucchini. I ordered green tea. As it steeped it became horribly bitter. I left over 1/2 of the meal behind. To their credit the waitress noticed my meat was overdone. They offered to prepare me that again but I didn't have time so they deducted 15% from the total. The employees were very nice & service was good. They moved to a new location about 8 months ago. The new location has a very clean modern interior. This is a popular sushi joint, but a few things didn't sit right with me. We ordered the Caribbean roll and Cary roll first. When they came out, about 85% of the roll was rice, with actual sushi hiding in one small quadrant of the circle. I wish I had taken a photo of this, who makes a roll like that. Not to be racist (or opposite-racist?), but there were no Asian sushi chefs behind the counter, maybe they didn't learn properly? Or is it a larger restaurant policy to be so cheap? Secondly, later on we added on an albacore and white tuna nigiri, both less than $5 each. When the final bill came out, they would only take the BOGO off the cheap nigiri that was in a totally different section of the menu rather than taking one of the specialty rolls off. Wtf, that's just not ethical and doesn't sit right with the customer. Does the customer also need to be underhanded and ask to close the check first before ordering additional sushi because the initial rolls were unimpressive? I love going here. Okay, is the sushi amazing and the best ever? No, but it's just good enough. With that in mind, Shiki Sushi is a lot of fun because of its atmosphere. It's a great place to go with a GROUP of friends. It's not a bad place for a date either. They have a 2 for 1 deal, so it's a clever way of getting you to order more to further indulge. Lots of variety. You can get your typical sushi or tuna or spicy tuna or something random that sort of diverts from anything resembling "fish." Plenty of TVs for sports, and they are accommodating if you request to watch a particular game, but this is generally not necessary. If it is Carolina related (Tarheels, Duke, Hurricanes, Panthers, and yes, even the Bobcats), they will likely be showing it. Go here for dinner. Service is fine. Never had a poor experience. Shiki loses a star for its host staff. While the waiters and bartenders are typically very good, the hosts seem like they hate to be there and, if I didn't already love this place, they make a dangerous first impression. This is the restaurant that converted my boyfriend from never eating sushi to craving Shiki almost daily. We now frequent this place and went a month straight eating there once a week! It's not a bargain, but for the size and quality of the portions and the nightly BOGO, it's doable. Between us we normally order 6 rolls and struggle to eat half, then take the rest home. We have our favorites but the menu is overlwheming in the best of ways, so we're trying to get a couple of our must haves and try new ones each time! Their edamame is delicious, but we always start with spring rolls, every single time. Next time we go, we're getting both because he has never tried edamame and we simply can't forgo the spring rolls which are served with a fantastic sweet and sour sauce. We always pur ourselves some soy sauce but never end up using it because...nothing needs dressing up. It's great as is. I went there for my birthday meal and splurged a little on a martini: the pomegranate lemon drop. The waiter told me it was popular, and I see why. I'm not one for sweet fruity drinks, but I could get used to this one, in moderation because it's sweet! But if these drinks are your thing, try it. It has pomegranate vodka and he made it a little stronger for me for my birthday :) Their birthday dessert? To die for. It could be my new favorite thing, and I'm not typically a fan of bananas in desserts...banana spring rolls. They were hot and crispy served with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and a caramel drizzle. So good! Be wary--they don't split checks and with the BOGO thing, and it's confusing. I have been with groups and we spent 20 minutes splitting up a check to see how it was fair if someone got two $16 rolls but someone else's order was two $8 rolls but both of them were knocked off with the BOGO, etc. There is almost always a wait if you go at normal dinner time on any given night, even a weeknight. Meh. I'll start off by saying I expected less from the atmosphere so that was nice surprise, except then I felt a bit underdressed in jeans and a t-shirt. Side note: is every restaurant in the Triangle located in a strip mall or is it just me? Anyway, the place was packed on a Sunday night and it took forfreakingever to get my order. As far as the sushi goes almost every option is fried, with cream cheese. I actually expected a fried chicken & biscuit roll somewhere in there. The sushi was okay, nothing to blow one's skirt up so don't expect a gastrointestinal miracle. Unless you really love cream cheese, which is kind of like butter...it can make damn near anything taste better. My biggest complaint with all the added stuff is that you don't really taste the fish, which is the point, no? In my limited experience with sushi places here (I'm hailing from San Francisco so I'm picky) I'd pick Sushi Love over this place in a heart beat. I went to this spot on a recent visit to Durham to see friends and I was not disappointed. I don't know that I have ever had such quality sushi at such a low price. I love that the rolls are 1/2 price and I was very happy with my service. The wait staff was fantastic; dealing with our requests for extra sauces and other minutia with a smile. Oh Shiki! You've almost redeemed yourself, sort of. When we first met, you were a hidden gem in an old strip mall. You dished out great quality sushi. You were unique, you were just good. Then people found out about you, which was nice at first. You expanded to keep up with all those people, but you cut corners in the process. You stopped splitting checks, you began overcharging for things like a soup/salad and hot tea. I would watch as your sushi chefs would pre-make rolls in preparation for incoming orders. I'd hear of bad service, patrons getting sick and ridiculous wait times. I was sad. I left you. I've come back a couple of times since then. I'm happy to see that checks are being split without a hassle, even times you'll offer in advance to split checks. The quality of the rolls is improving, but still not great quality (maybe you chalk that up for still having BOGO?). Service is better. The wait-time is still horrendous on the weekends (have you thought of opening another location?) So, I'm happier. It's not the same as when we first met, but you're there...still getting bigger, and I hope better. Keep it up and you may win me back. read more

This is one of those restaurants that I want to hate, but for which I have to acknowledge its strengths. So do you have some cravings for good sushi at a reasonable budget? Then Shiki Sushi seems to have figured out how to give it to you. As other reviewers mentioned, the sushi here is buy one get one free. So you assume that the quality has to suffer with that kind of deal. That is not the case, and the quality of the fish is very good and fresh, and the nigiris are made correctly (rice with the right sweetness is tighten firmly without crushing the grains). It almost reminds me of the good kaiten-zushi chains in Japan (sushi restaurants that send sushis around on a conveyer belt... Trust me, it is actually better than it sounds since you are guaranteed fresh sushi). On the other hand, I have tried the other dishes (which is from across all parts of Asian except southern Asia), and they are nothing to write home about. Also the service can be slow at times given the popularity. Finally as typical with these types of restaurant, they are in a non-discript strip mall where the external decorations makes you wonder if they are in business. So definitely a recommendation if you want to eat a lot of good quality sushi. read more

I've been back to Shiki a few times since my initial review and my initial review of three stars still stands. This place is really big (even bigger than in 2011 due to renovations) and it's still always crowded and somewhat noisy. I wouldn't exactly call this place intimate, but it is nicely decorated. On my most recent visit I went with the Shiki crunch roll and the Florida roll. Pretty good and filling. This sushi will satisfy your sushi craving at least (if you are craving sushi). Service is always prompt and friendly the times I have been here. Shiki Sushi is located close to a mall, so I think of it has highly commercialized mall sushi. Certainly not the best, freshest or the most authentic, but maybe the biggest/busiest sushi restaurant in the area. read more

I just moved to the area and really wanted to like this place (the Southpoint Durham location). Despite the sushi getting mixed reviews, I thought maybe since the owner/founder is Vietnamese that the southeast Asian dishes might be good. After trying the pad Thai, coconut Thai soup and sautéed bok choy, I'm pretty sure the people cooking this food do not know how to create the flavors of the region. When I placed my order, the person who answered the phone did not know what bok choy was and didn't realize it was on their menu! I remained optimistic (maybe this was a new staffer....?), but in the end, all the dishes were very disappointing. Please don't serve Thai food if you don't know how to make it! read more

Went downhill so far it's under the mountain. We felt hurried and totally unattended by the waitress. Couldn't get anything we asked for (salt and forks). We found them ourselves. Dinner came out so quickly, they forgot our appetizers. I ordered lamb, and was served beef. The dish was not only wrong, it was spicy, greasy and inedible. Both of our dishes sounded so good...served over asparagus, onions, scallions and fresh ginger. They forgot to mention it was drenched in very used oil. I used to love this place, but I am quite sure they must have switched owners from a Japanese run business to a bunch of cost-cutting cheapskates. It was my go-to sushi place when I went to UNC, and I still go every once in a while, even though the service isn't the best. The sushi here has always been pretty ok. The options in rolls for a sashimi lover is very limited, and the way they refused to split checks for bogo is really annoying. What if I wanted sashimi, but my friends wanted rolls? I get why they'd want to do that, but I think it's more likely to put customers off than please them. I'd either have to go here alone or just eat rolls all the time...and with that kind of effort...I can go elsewhere. Other than that, something that bugged me the last time I was there was that my friend kept getting dirty dishes and utensils. She kept asking for another plate and another plate, and the waiter kept having to apologize as he kept getting increasingly embarrassed. So sushi was totally on point, but the service was horrible! we waited at least 1.5 hours to get food on the table.. it was ridiculous!! we were so hungry! Also, the server charged us 25% gratuity!! WHAT??? That's just way too much! Last, the bills couldnt be done individually, so she combined some of our bills together. However, she failed to state that due to the fact that she cannot split the bill, the BOGO is not based on per person, its based on per bill. Overall 3.5 stars. This was the first sushi restaurant I was introduced to when I moved to NC. Although it isn't as great as some of the sushi restaurants in CA, I do appreciate the buy 1 roll, get 1 free deal. Also, it is fairly busy everytime I come there and I do enjoy the atmosphere, but I can see how people would complain about the noise. As usual, I would recommend the sashimi over the rolls. Never never eat lunch here! I think they have their D Squad cooking when it's daylight out. My first experience at this restaurant was a very disappointing lunch, so I wasn't so excited when some friends of mine decided that we should go to Shiki Sushi for dinner one Friday. I am writing this review from the table because I just had a life changing dessert. Please go here and try the Hawaiian funnel cake! It's essentially a fried kings Hawaiian roll with ice cream and it was stunningly delicious. Like the whole state fair in a bite. Before dessert I would have said a 3.5/4. The service today was not stellar but the food and atmosphere are pretty good. This is definitely a nice place for dinner in South Durham and I would have come back anyway but after dessert I am already marking my calendar for next time! read more

Although I've gone to Shiki a number of times, my most recent visit was this past Thursday, 12/1. I have always been a huge fan of Shiki Sushi. Before my last visit, I would probably have given it 4 stars, however my recent visit disappointed me. As a disclaimer- they have recently gone under new management. They've added some new rolls to their huge sushi list and have also added a few appetizers and main entrees (i.e. chicken pho!) I went to Shiki on Thursday night with 3 other friends. We usually all order sushi and get it on their signature boat- a really cool experience and one of the cool things about Shiki. However, this time I was craving their Saigon Street Noodles, so I got that with tofu. In the past, I have always enjoyed this dish. Not only is the portion size for this dish huge, but there was always a perfect balance of tofu, vegetables, noodles, and salad. Not only that, but the "dressing" (if you're Vietnamese, it's nuoc mam cham) was always really good. Not too salty, not too sweet, and not too sour or tangy. Perfect. Sadly, this time, the dish was almost the exact opposite of how it usually is. There was a disproportionate amount of noodles to tofu and vegetables (almost no noodles..), and there was barely any crisp lettuce to balance it all out. Not only that, but the "dressing" was basically salt water with a drop of lime juice. It was really salty and almost inedible. Had it not been 8pm and I hadn't eaten all day, I would not have eaten the dish at all. My friends all got different rolls of sushi and for the most part, they all seemed content with their rolls. However, we could all tell there was some kind of change in management or chef. The food just isn't the same Shiki that we all knew and loved. Another reason why I would give this restaurant 3 stars is because of the wait staff. Never expect much from your servers at Shiki. On a positive note, I do hold some hope for Shiki in the future. I think previously I had given it a 4 star review but the last time I went in I was disappointed. I believe Shiki, along with other local business feel, that since they get adequate business they can hike prices and people will pay for it. I went and ordered a house salad with my girlfriend and they brought us massive bowls as opposed to prior, house sized portions. We asked numerous times if this was right and the girl said, yes, this is the only size we had. They also apparently increased the price 3 bucks. I might as well have just ordered a regular salad. The sushi is still good, but sneaky price hikes I've noticed in their new menu has made me steer clear. In addition we had about 3 waiters/waitresses and it wasn't the same personalized, warm service we've gotten prior. Meh, it really has disappointed me. I agree with the person below who made mention of their recent price hikes. It no longer is sushi affordable, the pricing has stepped Shiki to a more rare occasion level. I used to eat here about 3 times a month, I probably would go back maybe once every 6 months now if that. A house salad is now 6 dollars, and previous 7-9 dollar rolls have went to 13 - 15 dollars for basic rolls! read more

When I first moved here almost 6 years ago, Shiki was the bomb. More recently the quality of the food has gone down. Definitely disappointing. However it's not bad, it is still good. And since the triangle has no other decent sushi spots, Shiki is still my favorite (for now anyway). I will say I really enjoy the ambiance. And if anyone is interested, they recently added a Wagyu burger which is absolutely heavenly...random but much appreciated. All in all I will continue to go but also keep my eye out for competition. read more

Honestly, this wasn't a great sushi experience for me. The sushi itself was probably a 3, but the service was rather blah. The waitress didn't know what kind of sushi was what and tried to tell me that salmon nigiri (sake) was actually salmon roe (ikura). Sorry, but I know my sushi. Thankfully, she came to her senses and took it back to be replaced with the right thing. It was still a bit aggravating. My date and I split vegetable tempura and, honestly, it wasn't very good. Hands down one of my favorite local restaurants. The plethora of options at Shiki is mind boggling, and most of the rolls are quite tasty. The prices are relatively cheap with their BOGO sushi deals. The major con in my mind is the fact that Shiki won't split checks during dinner, meaning splitting the bill in large groups can be a hassle. A friend of mine has even formulated an equation to handle these sticky situations. Everyone who moves away from the Triangle misses this place. Even those who move out to Cali, the Mecca of Asian fusion that it is, have cravings for a hearty Shiki meal every now and again. I love how unabashedly American their rolls are. Sushi rolls are often laden with mayo, eel sauce, then breaded and fried. Less purist, more Paula Dean, always delicious. My perennial favorites: Eel fashion, Volcano, Special Yellowtail, and Special Maguro. read more

Who am I kidding...I LOVE this restaurant. Heck, I have been here 3 times in the last week. Consistently good service, cool atmosphere, and amazing food. I never want to eat sushi anywhere else and it always blows me away with delicate, creamy, delectable rolls that melt in my mouth. Where else can you get 6 rolls of premium sushi for less $45? Awesome sushi selection and it's always BOGO. Definitely try their non-sushi food items too...their Samurai hibachi is simply superb... I have never been disappointed with any dish. Also try their 1/2 off wine bottles on Sunday or their $6 wine glasses on Thursday nights. Shiki, you rule. read more

Not only is their name fun to say, they also have a really wide selection of sushi, all of which is very good, and they have buy one roll get one free. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?! If I had to complain about anything (which I feel like I have to because this is a review and who doesn't complain about something in a review), it would be how close together the tables are. It sometimes feels like I am sitting at my neighbors table which can make it hard to hear your own conversation.. but does make it easy to make new friends! What I'm trying to say here is, if you're on the fence about trying this place... get off the fence and go try it. read more

I have been to Shiki Sushi on multiple occasions but not as much as I would like to lately. So this is a little belated love of Shiki! I ate here a lot before I had kids with fellow colleagues. Then when I was pregnant, I thought of shying away because the possible concerns of raw fish in pregnancy. I decided to go anyways one day and just order my regular food and ask the waiter to just use a different knife to cut mine with. They agreed without a second thought. Just recently I had the opportunity to eat there with some friends from the Mom's Group and I was thrilled to hear Pitbull songs coming from the bar most of the evening. I wanted to get up and dance songs from Zumba class but felt that wasn't really appropriate. Anyways.. hands down one of my favorite places to eat. read more

I have been to Shiki Sushi on many occasions: lunch, drinks, dinner. Their sushi rolls are awesome! I confess that I like the ones that aren't necessarily good for you (the volcano roll or anything with cream cheese...). It can get really busy on the weekends, so be ready to snag a seat at the bar or wait for a table. For lunch they have a "frequent flier" card, after 5 lunches your next lunch is free! The restaurant is located in a very unassuming strip mall, but once inside you'll see it has a great, trendy atmosphere. read more

Shiki Sushi ranks as my favorite sushi place in the Triangle. The fish is always fresh and the menu has some really great, different options. I haven't tried any of the other menu items, so I can only comment on the sushi. The sushi is always buy-one get-one, and to make up for it, the prices can be a bit more expensive than other sushi places. Consistency is part of why I feel Shiki wins hands-down over some of the other sushi places around the Triangle - I can't remember having a bad roll here, ever. If you are alone or eating as a couple, the small sushi bar is a fun place to sit. The atmosphere is nice, although it can get pretty noisy inside at peak hours. And the service can be lackluster at times. However, on last week's visit, we did have a great, energetic, attentive server. Shiki is in a strip-mall, you wouldn't notice once you're inside, but for that reason, I'd skip the outdoor seating. They are great about custom orders here. We typically ask them to leave out the odd stuff - spicy mayo, cream cheese... Recommended: Florida Roll, Blue Sea Roll, the Woman in Red. But it's fun to try new things on each visit from their fairly extensive list! read more

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a big raw fish sushi eater, which I know probably disqualifies my opinion for many sushi connoisseurs. However, that being said, I really like this restaurant and every time I've been, everyone I am with has enjoyed their food. It's hard to beat the buy one get one free rolls and the selection is great. One of my favorites is the avocado roll, which has large pieces of delicious avocado. I also really like the Shiki Crunch roll (avocado and shrimp tempura). The other non-sushi items that I have tried were quite good as well (spring rolls, calamari, Pad Thai, curry, miso soup). Overall, I think the quality of the food is very good. The restaurant gets very busy and there is often a wait. Sometimes the service leaves a little to be desired, especially when they are very busy. But, I would definitely recommend trying it out! read more
