Huge portions and fast, friendly service! We stopped by for dessert after eating lunch at Sushi Bay next door. The shop is a relatively small hole in the wall with plenty of benches outside for eating. We ordered the Shimazu Special which was big enough for two to share. I was so sad to hear their original location closed, but now they have one in Kapolei! So I can have Shimazu when I'm on either side of the island which is an incredible perk. Their shaved ice is the reason why I only go to Hawaii to eat it and I never touch it back in California. Its located in a large shopping plaza, so parking is not an issue. There is one bench located inside, but shaved ice is best enjoyed outside anyway. The cashier was friendly, and working very hard since they were the only person in the store to take orders and to prepare the shaved ice. I remember really liking the other Shimazu location on our last visit so I had high expectations here. They didn't disappoint! They have so many unique flavors and creams but it can be a little bit overwhelming so I ended up just picking off the Shimazu Favorites list and adding mochi. But as I was standing there waiting, I noticed so many flavors I wanted to try, like Fuji Apple and Sweet Coffee! But we were plenty happy with our Coconut Dream, which has coconut and ube cream, Haupia cream on top, and vanilla ice cream inside. When you add on mochi (extra $1.25) they put it inside which I kinda wish it was on the outside like other places, because the ice hardens it a bit. It wasn't quite as soft and chewy as other places but still not bad! The keiki size was actually plenty for our family to share too. Great spot for shave ice! They have a large selection of flavors/toppings and other little snacks within the shop as well. The consistency of the ice is not my favorite but it's pretty standard as shave ice goes. The portions are MASSIVE and it is very cheap for the amount that you receive. The keiki is only 4.50 and it is the size of other locations large. Add ons are about 1.50 additional and they also do set specials that you can not make substitutions with. The service is very kind and inviting. I even changed my flavor at the last moment and they had no issues and were extremely accommodating. The inside of the shop is super cute and kawaii. Possibly new staff still in training?) - The strawberry syrup flavor was different from what we're used to, but still sweet and refreshing I debated whether I had enough to post a review, but decided to share our early impressions. Nostalgia and now! Gone are the plastic holders that held choice of toppings and small size was still considered humongous or bumbucha! I really miss it! Only see paper bowls. Shave ice have differences in height. Grateful for ample free parking. If quantity matters, go for shave ice only, then you'll notice a difference in height. My hubby ordered a small red watermelon, strawberry and bubble gum shave ice. He scored a massive shave ice. If complexity and toppings are a must, expect shave ice to be shorter in height. I ordered what I really missed and craved for a small Shimazu Special - homemade, generous cubed or square shaped mochi and Dave's vanilla ice cream hidden under red velvet and crème brûlée, drizzled with condensed milk. Dang! The small appeared and seemed minute or tiny in the bowl. I enjoyed every spoonful and smoothness of my afternoon treat on a humid day. Five stars for communication in customer service. There's a 3% surcharge if using credit card. Our orders were ready in a jiffy. My only concern when line extends out the door is to possibly use a PA system to call out numbers so employees are not holding the perishable shave ice for long. For now, patrons are given number(s) on popsicle stick(s). Inside of the shop to order is tiny. There's also a wall of prepackaged snacks - rock salt plum and more, plus premade pops ready to freeze. Shimazu is a definite treat, especially in this summer heat! I absolutely loved the haupia sauce, it's a must-try and takes the shave ice to another level. It can get a bit crowded outside, especially with the nearby Sushi Bay customers, so just be aware if you plan to enjoy your shave ice right away. Back in the day I stayed at my grandparents home just a couple of houses away from the old B&S store on School St. They renamed the store to the Shimizu Store a while back. Totally planned to visit the Liliha location before they closed, but before I knew it, it opened up in Kapolei, and my daughter and I were enjoying the mall's Easter festivities! I was so happy for them when I heard the cashier mention how busy they are in Kapolei versus their old location! Service: it was the first day open and we came an hour before closing. After that there was a line!! There was only 2 people working, but they did great! They get a star for nostalgia and for service. The store front is quaint. However, there was a large dead moth at the front window next to the bench inside the store. The bench looks like the one they had outside the Liliha location. Something isn't right on multiple levels. This is not Shimazu quality. The lychee and mango both taste medicinal/chemical. I've never experienced any ill tasting syrups at the Liliha location. Or the ice was contaminated which altered the syrup flavors. After a few bites, I could not bring myself to eat any more and tossed it. My son commented maybe they use unfiltered tap water for the ice bc the ice texture is definitely far from the heavenly fresh snow softness the Liliha location consistently had. He had the same experience with his rainbow shave ice. I tried his, it had the same chemical flavor to it. The ice texture with their unique syrup flavors is what I loved most about Shimazu shave ice at Liliha which I patroned for almost two decades and was quite sad to see it go. I live in Kapolei but would go to Liliha for my favorite shave ice. I was super excited when I found out they were coming to Kapolei. But now I find myself quite disappointed. Perhaps they did not rinse the ice mold properly after washing it and it contaminated the ice with whatever detergent they use. At a later time, I will make another attempt at this location. Staff is friendly and helpful. The store is big enough to accommodate the line and it helps with the benches outside for sitting. I ordered one of the Shimazu's Special the Coconut Dream which is Coconut Cream, Ube Cream, Haupia Cream Topping, and Vanilla Dave's ice cream. First off all specials come in the small size but the small is a pretty decent size that you would get at any other shave ice place. The shave ice is so good it is smooth and melts in your mouth. Word to the wise you have to eat this right away there is no way you can take this home. The consensus among the kids and adults is it's SO GOOD!!! I'm glad they brought this here in Kapolei. Recently transplanted from N.School Street in Liliha to this new location in Kapolei. Actually enjoyed it even more where the parking is plentiful, the outdoor seating is ample, the air conditioning in the store is cranked up! Still the same snacks available including my favorite k-pops to share with out of town friends (think liquid ready to be frozen into popsicles in many tropical and/or favorite flavors). Shave ice, the star of the show comes in flavored ice only to really deluxe combos with many options in-between. If you are not sharing with others, I recommend the "keiki" portion which is big enough to still support three flavors. And at only $4.50 for the basic its a real steal! Because i wanted to sample multiple flavors today I had a 3 flavor keiki with red velvet, ube cream, and matcha latte. My hands down favorite of the three was the ube cream followed closely by the green tea milk. Other had the pickled mango which she said was nice and tart AND sweet at the same time. Another had their specialty coconut dream (includes mochi balls and ice cream and i believe a snow cap) which he devoured! And the fourth in our party had another 3 combo keiki. Everyone busy. Back again just to give an update. I think me and my kids have been here 4-5 times since my last update? It's just THAT GOOD. Some of my favorite flavors I'd say are worth trying, are orange creamsicle (tastes like Jamba Juice), ube (tastes like the ice cream), vanilla cream, matcha, and red velvet (like the cake, without the cream cheese part). This is the best shave ice spot in Kapolei in my opinion the owner is super friendly and there are so many flavors to choose from.
