Sadly, Shimogamo is something to be avoided. Has all the ingredients to be a good restaurant, except for the food, service, and execution. Four person meal, lunchtime, and $151. $37.75 per person for lunch struck me as excessive. Each of us ordered a bowl at ~$25 a few per bowl. Delivery of orders was staggered in 5min intervals. First, our daughter. 5min, then my order, 5min, then my son, 5min... still nothing... 10 minutes, still nothing, then we asked... and waiter admitted he forgot to submit my wifes order. He asked if she still wanted her order, which she did since part of having a family lunch is all family members simultaneously. I'm not sure if this is normal at this restaurant to stagger meal deliveries, but it was not an appealing experience. After 45 minutes we all had our meals. The staff are polite and the restaurant is clean and new. However, the execution was extremely poor. We should have been concerned when a couple sitting nearby waited ~7 minutes before deciding to leave. Though a painful and expensive experience, the only silver lining is the opportunity to share our experience and recommend you AVOID Shimogamo. There are other worthy restaurant options. read more

We are huge fans of the original shimogamo on Warner. We came into their new location with high hopes and expectations. Also it's closer to our house. I think some kinks still need to be worked out. The server was very nice and knowledgeable. If you are needing something, prepare yourself to ask for that something 3-4 times. On different occasions we asked for soy sauce, ginger, water multiple times with different people and took 10 min minimum to get these items. and we had to beg to order another drink. Our server forgot to ring in our appetizer so the sushi came out first and when I asked the server about the appetizers, you could tell they were not rung in. Cocktails were delicious, appetizers amazing, sushi is about half the size of the Warner location. All in all, I'll drive and stick to the Warner location. read more

WOWWWW! We had the best date night here. After traveling to Japan we had zero expectations for sushi in Arizona but this place blew our minds. We enjoyed the crab salad, miso soup, signature rolls and nigiri flown in from Japan! Even better than the food were the people. Joe was an incredible server who knew every detail about the menu and his recommendations are the only ones I trust. The shaved ice dessert, holy cow, SAVE SOME ROOM! Went to check out the Gilbert location after many years of frequenting the Chandler location. The food quality is excellent and on par with Chandler. Definitely less sushi specials than Chandler but the expanded menu with the Robata grill makes up for it! The dining room is a little more informal but still great ambience for a sushi restaurant. We sat at the sushi bar and had a great time talking with Tak our sushi chef. He was super knowledgeable about the menu and definitely loves what he does which makes the meal even better! We were greeted being told that they would seat us but they "are doing last call in 15 minutes." We had a reservation at 8:30 and the restaurant says is open until 9:30PM. The first waiter that came up to us was talking so fast and loud and even dropped plates accidentally on our table used a dirty pencil to point out items "He would get". At one point the manager came up and told the waiter to give them "a few extra minutes to order, because they had a reservation". The second waitress we had (not the first one who was sweaty and used a dirty pencil to point out his favorites) was OUTSTANDING. I hope she gets away from this company and finds a real place to work. What they didn't know, my wife has been in the food service industry her entire life and was the GM of some of the valleys premier dining establishments. So her perspective has always been one of "let's give them the benefit of the doubt..." but not this time. We will never return and we are both sure if the owner doesn't do something quickly and replace management at this location it won't matter because there won't be a place to go back to. Final thoughts . Arrived at 8:30 dinner done paid for and rushed out the door by the smell of a cooktop cleaning smoke filling the air while we watched the staff of the restaurant have cocktails at the bar (even though we were not allowed to order a second cocktail because they were trying hard to complete all the side work and cleanups so the staff can make sure to lock the doors at 9:30.) DONE AT 9:12. Not another person in the building assuming they were rushed out of there as well. Total bill $193.00 ALMOST 200.00 For this... HARD PASS! Great sushi truly great... HORRIBLE HORRIBLE FRONT OF HOUSE! Pretty sure the owners intend for the place to produce income for all the hours they are open, the staff should not determine that for them. One of the best sushi places in the valley. This was my first time at Gilbert for their restaurant week dinner menu. All the dishes were exceptional and made with quality, great price aswell. I was a little let down at my martini glass being gross looking like it was dirty though, probably just unpolished. That shouldn't happen with an 18$ cocktail lol. Food was okay, bland, and very pricey compared to other sushi places. I can understand the quality seemed slightly better but doesn't justify a $170 bill for 2 people, and just drinking water. The atmosphere was aiming for modern Japanese and while simplistic came off as cheap. The chairs looked cheap and restaurant was very tight. We ate at the sushi bar bc we did not have reservations. The hostess also required a phone number for us to be seated. Weird. It was a nice one-time dining experience but definitely not a place I would recommend as a regular sushi spot. Maybe if you have out of town guests, a date, or special occasion. We ordered the shimogamo roll which didn't have any taste except for the heavily battered shrimp tempura. The other 2 rolls we ordered had no taste. We order the yakitori skewers, the shimogamo salad which was probably the best thing we ordered that night and the matcha red bean dessert. We didn't order any drinks that night and the check ended up being around $170. The owner, not sure if it's her culture has a stuck-up and has a condescending attitude. The sushi here is always absolutely amazing! So fresh and delicious. I'm constantly telling all my friends to try this place. I've been here a handful of times with my boyfriend and his family. The service has always been good accept for one time we had this very miserable server. He wasn't very pleasant and after we paid he didn't say thank you, goodbye, have a good night or anything. He ignored us even after we thanked him for everything...literally said nothing. We tried to brush him off because maybe he had a bad night. Well last weekend I wanted to bring my parents here for the first time and of course we had him as our server. He just seems like he hates his job. He's not very friendly or sociable. I am such a huge fan of all these craft restaurants opening up in the Gilbert area, truly. I saw this pop up when I was grocery shopping and told myself I had to try! To start off, I would highly recommend you make a reservation on their website when planning to go. The drinks were tasty - I drink virgin cocktails and the bartender came up with this lychee concoction that was amazing. My husband got an Old Fashioned, he liked the flavor but told me they definitely don't make them as strong as other places.. other than that their food was FANTASTIC! I'm obsessed with their appetizer of the snow crab on sushi crispy rice.. still dreaming of it. The flavors are just fresh and light. Same with their entrees - we ordered the Shimogamo roll, the baked salmon roll, and the skewer sampler. My husband was pleasantly surprised by the bone marrow and heart skewer, these were his favorite. The style of the restaurant itself is an organic modern vibe so I would definitely say it's a little fancier. This is an upscale Japanese restaurant with prices to match. I ordered the Chirashi bowl, listed at $32 on the lunch menu. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I waited about 15 minutes for my food which was fine. The presentation was beautiful, but in my opinion there should have been more fish. There were two pieces of tamago, and two scallops, but just one piece each for the other selections. Ebi, Salmon, Tuna. Hamachi, Red snapper? The sushi rice was okay. Now, the problem: the soy sauce that was on the table was old or tainted. It comes in a little teapot dispenser. It gave my fish a musty taste. After I had eaten several pieces, I realized that it was the fault of the soy sauce, not the fish. I immediately called the waiter to bring me some fresh soy sauce. He soon brought me what he called the "house" soy sauce, which was better than excellent. He explained that the soy sauce that came on the table was a low sodium version, and that some people don't care for it. I definitely did like the "house" soy sauce, but detested the soy sauce that came in the little teapot server. So, live and learn. I would definitely suggest that you ask for the "house" soy sauce, and avoid the soy sauce in the teapot server. read more

Been goin to the Chandler location forever and it is one of the best sushi restaurants in the USA. So we tried the new one in Gilbert, AZ for a birthday celebration. I had read it wasn't as traditional as the original but had a lot to offer. We were not disappointed. Started off with HIRAME USUZUKURI (halibut) which is so sublime that one just has to try it to understand. The other big favourite was the MAGURO (bigeye tuna) my guest was amazed how good it was. I enjoyed the ABURA BOUZU (escolar) especially since I don't find it everywhere in the AZ. We also shared the smoked skirt steak which was perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was so tender it was like meat butter. Truly rememberable. The meal was finished with a celebratory KAKIGORI which was so elevated above shaved ice it was a shame to call it shaved ice lol. The service was spot on, servers were helpful and knowledgeable without being too stalker-ish lol. I highly recommend this new edition of Shimogamo for dining parties of sushi lovers and their friends who are less fond of sushi, something for everyone. Well done Shimogamo!
