We have been going to Shimogamo Chandler for many years and last night had our first visit to Shimogamo Gilbert. The food was the same excellent quality. The issue we had was with the front of house management (or the fact that it was not existent). Soy sauce containers that are empty and crusted with dirt. The hand wash area near the bathrooms had water all around the sink, soaked paper towels as a base for the soap dispensers, a mirror that had not been wiped in quite a while and a wastebasket that was overflowing. The servers had dirty aprons, would grab your water glass at the top to refill them, etc. I would expect things like this at a much more casual restaurant. But if you are going to charge premium prices match the experience. read more

I recently visited Shimogamo and had a mixed experience. The ambiance was pleasant, and the food was mostly good, but the service left something to be desired. Sat down at a crowded restaurant, which wasn't a bad thing, but only got sat with 1 menu to share...more to come here... Our seamingly 'newer' server seemed unfamiliar with the drink menu and had to look up information on what was included on the saki and whiskey flights. While they were polite and trying their best, the lack of knowledge affected our overall experience... the gentleman with the beard definitely knew his stuff. A+ for him knowing the notes for both flights and which order the story would unfold (dry to sweet). After we placed our order, we were wondering why their dinner menu seemed small, and we flagged our server to only realize that he forgot to give us dinner menus! Perhaps it was the hostest responsibility, but this was a huge miss. Oof.. We still ordered something from that menu as we had our eyes on the wagyu. This was super salty, and portions were underwhelming with only 5 thin, well-done cooked slices. Crispy rice was decent and had good flavor and texture. Oysters were shucked perfectly with no shards, and the ponzu added a nice touch to the freshness. The sashimi platter was decent, where only the notable 'melt in your mouth' was cod topped with garnish and the tuna. Otherwise, all other sashimi weren't that impressive. Teck was really nice and made the sushi bar experience a little better. He was friendly, polite, and even asked our names. He also offered to flambe some butter for one of their rolls that was ordered on the side (since I have a dairy allergy) but other members of the party were still able to experience the toasted butter on the cran and scallop roll (apparently pretty amazing with the butter). The oxtail was okay, and the downfall was the portion sizes of their flights....very small portions of saki and whiskey. It's not really worth the $30+ ticket. Their attempt at the old fashion with their wagyu fat infused whiskey was pretty good. Overall, they attempted to make this super upscale and a high ticket dining experience, but it wasn't worth the $350 price tag for two. Not a good experience on my Birthday. What I learned was, if you have a nice Birthday celebration in mind at this particular restaurant, don't make a reservation for the Patio. The patio is more of a resting spot while you possibly wait to be seated inside, and/or have a few drinks and a roll; definitely not for a nice dinner. After 30 minutes of being seated and having no drinks, we left. During that 30 minutes, we had three servers casually come by to ask us if we had been helped, like a cocktail waitress might. The last one said she would take our order if we knew what we wanted. Honestly, I doubt anyone cared and doubt anyone probably noticed we were gone. Luckily we walked across the parking lot. to North Italia, waited 30 minutes and had the most wonderful night on the beautiful Patio. Food was amazing, very comparable to Sugarfish in LA. Ambiance was chill, sat at the bar to watch the chefs work their magic. Drinks were very well mixed, tasty and strong. O-toro was so buttery, try it if you have a chance. We came during restaurant week and was able to try multiple dishes. Fan favorite was the yakitori thighs and the albacore. The steak was great too, the sauce to dip the skirt steak was sweet and teriyaki-esque. Our waiter was great, she made sure everyone was taken care of. Unfortunately, at the end of the service left a bitter taste. Someone who was not our waiter came to take checks which our waiter kindly split without us even asking, we were trying to let them know we were missing nigiri on our receipts and did not want to leave without paying the appropriate price, he then gave a weird statement that "we do not split groups or itemize for groups" very rudely, like bro I was wanting to make sure we payed correctly not split or itemize anything. We spent over $500 and were very shocked by how rude the payment part was handled. Especially since we were trying to add to the bill. That was the only let down to the service. Kate or Katie you were awesome, guy with glasses and beard, you really let down our party and ruined the vibe. In the end, price comparatively to quality was good - for the ambiance and date night type location, good drinks, and amazing yakitori, this was great. Highly recommend. I went to this restaurant today and was really disappointed. Their posted hours say they close at 2:30, but we arrived at 2:05 and were told they were already closed. The guy who came up to us had a terrible attitude about it too. If you're going to close early, at least post accurate hours or treat customers with a little respect. The servers knowledge was impressive and the ingredients used for our Sushi and hot plates were quality. Very impressive and I would say that you should check this out for yourself for Dinner. Staff are friendly but waited for 15-20 minutes after getting seated to get an order taken (our server like sort of just disappeared from the restaurant??). At this point we were getting annoyed so we just ordered one small roll and left. Roll was fine and tasty but generally overpriced for portion. Went to Kura sushi afterwards and had 10x more fun, still decent tasting sushi and not have to deal with service at all. My son's birthday celebration ended up being here. Made reservations prior which is highly recommended. Called the day before and only availability was outside & my timeframe worked for 7:00 PM. Beautiful weather so our table outside was perfect. We were planning to start with the edamame, but unfortunately they don't make a spicy or garlic flavored sauce so we opted out of that & got the Crispy Truffle Crab which has a snow crab mix, truffle oil & and a crispy fried sushi rice. This was absolutely delicious! We then ordered numerous rolls had to order two of the Oxtail Rolls because it was so amazing! The Udon Carbonara Pasta was an excellent dish! Super creamy sauce that was just luscious! Drinks were really good. Suggest the cold Sake & the Kamogawa Breeze which is a a peach sparkling sake- Super refreshing especially on a warm evening! Desserts: The Sake Cheesecake was delicious and the Matcha Tiramisu was good if you love Matcha. The service was a little lacking, but our server was extremely pleasant. Atmosphere is great & we enjoyed our dining experience on the patio. This place is pretty pricey and the rolls add up quickly. We really enjoyed everything unfortunately no birthday recognition from the establishment, but we partied for the occasion. Food excellent!!! Great side salad with lots of variety of veggies. Good green tea. I had the double salmon roll and my husband and mom had bowls, one beef and salmon. Green tea was smooth with no bitterness. Restaurant was clean and efficient. The service was beyond terrible. Kyle, our "server" seemed like he couldn't care less about us. We even had an exchange with the table next to us that had the same server and they weren't too happy with his dry and careless service. For the prices you guys are charging, would it really be too much to ask that you hire servers that actually care about the guest experience? Food quality: 8.5/10 Some nit-picks, I had the wagu skewers, one of which was too chewy to eat. I also ordered the set of 5 nigiri, chefs choice, and the quality of these was only medium. Ambiance: 8/10 Very pretty restaurant, comfortable, nice lighting. Cleanliness: 10/10 All of the staff seemed to be very attentive to the cleanliness of the restaurant, going above and beyond. Menu: 9/10 Good selection and variety. Specials and desert were interesting. Service: 6/10 After I explained that one of our wagu skewers was all gristle, too chewy to eat, our waitress said she would alert the chef. I wrongfully assumed she would remove this from the bill. She did not remove it from our bill and did not bring us a new skewer. This skewer was ~20$ by itself. She also did not seem very engaged and did not seem very knowledgeable about the menu. She didn't seem concerned with our experience, considering the cost of our meal. I did not enjoy her attitude. Final notes: We were seated at the sushi bar, what an experience! I would definitely come Again, given I had a different waitress. It is very interesting watching the kitchen and the great care taken to prepare the food. I love the place! I have visited several times. It is pricey, but there are a few appetizers on the menu that will not bankrupt anyone. I love their duck, as well as sashimi. Tuna is fantastic, and halibut sashimi is one of the best I have had. Also, udon carbonara is quite delicious. As for my favorite, I order udon noodle soup and tempura shrimp on the side. They offer an amazing selection of wine, sake, beer, and great cocktails. Be advised, there are many things on the menu that are very expensive, but wagyu is not my favorite anyway. Service is a bit reserved - it's all Japanese staff (except for the bar) and they are not very warm. They will not be excited to answer multiple questions about sushi rolls or fish you have never heard of. They do have a lot of Japanese guests as well. Finally, the bartenders (both American and Japanese) are amazing and their service is outstanding. If you need help ordering, I suggest sitting at the bar! They will offer honest and truly helpful suggestions. Reservations are essential. Ambiance is somewhat minimalistic and sleek - I do like it a lot. We are huge fans of Shimogamo Chandler, living in Gilbert I was really excited to see them opening a restaurant that was half the distance for us. We went to the opening last night, I had 7:30 reservations and we were seated right away. The new location is beautiful. It's different enough to stand on its own but still felt like Shimogamo. For only having been open for 3 hours I was very impressed with the quality of the food, the speed in which it came and the accuracy of our order. Everything was delicious! We had sushi, ribs, pork katsu, and shrimp tempura. The shrimp could have been fried just a tad longer but overall everything was perfect. The service was as expected for an opening night but I am stretching, given that some issues were out of their control. Its not cheap. And sure, there are cheaper options - go to Albertsons to get your sushi if price is an issue for you, or one of the other hundreds of fast-food Korean sushi places masquerading as a Japanese restaurant. Quality ingredients cost more, this is not cheap gas station sushi. Overall an amazing opening night. We look forward to many years of dinners, celebrations and memories at the new location. Where to start. We've been missing good Japanese since Toyama closed a few years ago and Mo and Jiro went back to Japan. I saw a ad for Shimogamo on Insta for restaurant week that featured Miso Black Cod (my favorite). So we trekked from N Scottsdale to Gilbert to try it.. OMG I found paradise! Having lived in Tokyo for 5 years I'm very snobby on Japanese food. Shimogamo is top notch excellent Japanese cuisine! The fish is fresh and you can tell it's hand selected. The Ikura was so good, no fishy taste and luxurious, Hamachi ? Wonderful! The Black cod was other worldly as was the custard we had for desert. All in all a perfect 10! Can't wait to go back and try the Okinomiaki (even though it Osaka style) and the gizzard yakitori. Do not miss this restaurant! Full stop. I might have well have been back in Hiroo Tokyo Japan. I have never been so disappointed and upset, ever, after leaving a restaurant. I had to take an entire week to calm down before I wrote this review. But, I want to make sure people know exactly what they are getting into by going here for dinner before they spend a lot of money for horrible service. I have been SO excited to try this sushi restaurant. I have heard a ton of good things about the food here. When I saw it was on restaurant week and checked out the menu, I thought what better way to try it AND they had a good food option for my husband (who doesn't like sushi). Well, that was a HUGE mistake. We were greeted by a very nice hostess and she sat us right away, as I had a reservation. We sat at our table for 10 minutes, with multiple servers passing right by us a ton of times. Clearly no one was going to come over to our table, so after being annoyed for 10 minutes, I got up and asked the hostess if she could send someone over to our table. The server comes over and says "Thanks for waiting"... No apology or acknowledgement.. We made sure to order ALL of our food and drink selections right away because we didn't want to risk him not coming back again. The manager (I guess it was) sent over two free shots of sake to make up for the fact that no one came to our table. I received my cocktail, then the appetizer portion, then the nigiri portion, then we just sat and waited... And waited.. and waited.... The server finally came up and I asked where the steak entree was, and he hesitantly said it was coming. TEN minutes later (which we now have been sitting there a total of minimum 45 minutes) he comes over again, completely unaware we still don't have our steak, and asks if I want another drink. At this point, my husband is absolutely starving and furious we just told him to get the steak and put it in a box to go. And I just accepted I wasn't going to get the dessert portion because who knows how long that would have taken. The entire time this is all going on, the table right next to us, also ordered off the restaurant week menu, they received all 4 courses AND paid the check all in the same amount of time we were sitting down.. And we still had not even gotten our steak. The manager comes over and asks how everything is and told him how upset and unacceptable this is, and he did NOT apologize at all, he made an excuse. And his excuse was because we ordered off the restaurant week menu so it takes 45 minutes for the steak to come out. Well,, that's a lie because the table next to us is already ready to leave because they had gotten all four courses and paid and it's been the same amount of time. I then reminded him that I needed to tell the hostess to send someone over to our table because no one was coming and he said that he sent over free shots to apologize for that. Ok, i DONT NEED free shots! I NEED good service.... Which clearly they have no standards here or care because they know all the checks here are going to be large so they just bank on the fact that the tips are going to be big anyways. Needless to say, we stopped at Taco Bell on the way home so my husband could actually have something to eat. No quality of sushi is worth this kind of disgraceful and horrible service, especially when you see what the amount of your check is going to be. I would tell everyone to stay away, but if you must go there to try it, if you immediately get bad service, I would just walk out. Do not ruin your evening and waste money like I did. read more

The bartenders were super cool, but before they could give me my drinks that I ordered, the manager came over and told me I could not do that and I needed to wait outside... while I was ordering from behind an empty chair at the bar! I'm not much into leaving reviews but had to do this time to give credit where it's due. Me and my wife recently moved from Torrance, California where Japanese restaurants are abundant after spending nearly 10 years. We both grew up in Japan and ever since we came to the states, going to a nice Japanese restaurant for a special occasion became somewhat of our tradition. Anyway, I was looking for a restaurant for my wife's birthday night. I made a reservation because a friend of mine from work told me good things about this restaurant. Honestly, I was somewhat skeptical before coming here simply because of my unfamiliarity with the restaurant and menu, not to menion that there is no ocean nearby...To much our surprise though, everything we had was incredible. Truffle amberjack came to our table first and we were both blown away. Combination of truffle ponzu and red onion adds nice flavor to amberjack which tasted fresh. 2 spoons of seafood cheviche had very distinct flavors - hotate and orange with jalapeno was refreshing and strong yet nice aftertaste of hotate while seared salmon was just amazing. I generally don't much care for tofu but agedashi tofu I had was something else. The dashi was so good that I finished it all. Miyazaki gyu rib eye was extremely tender and juicy. The onion sauce and the side of green onion on top made it even better. Definitely the best among everything we had. Sushi assortment at the end was great without exception. Not sure if fish were frozen to keep it fresh, but I couldn't tell because they all tasted fresh. If it were, they do a great job defrosting it. I am happily surprised I found one of the best Japanese restaurants here in Gilbert. The food was simply amazing. But equally important was Kai who helped us make all of this happen. We didn't know that Omakase generally require us to call them ahead of time. We almost gave up and try something else, but he accommodated our request. Also, his comments on the dishes were on point - he not only knows the dishes they serve well but also knows which one is great. Everything he said he likes was in fact incredible. This location is such a downgrade from the Chandler location. The original location is amazing, the staff is always extremely helpful. This one the staff seemed to be genuinely annoyed to be working. Our server was so quiet and annoyed and the bartender didn't even explain our drinks when he delivered them, even though we asked to be surprised and let them choose our drinks. The food was great, quality still compares but we did miss some of the menu items they don't have here. We tried to give this location a second shot and scheduled lunch reservations for our wedding anniversary on NYE through their website (using Open Table since that's where you get directed to). We have young kids at home so we could only do lunch and Chandler doesn't serve lunch today. We were called about an hour before our reservations saying we needed to come in earlier because they were forcing everyone out early to decorate for NYE and they blocked their calendar but Open Table didn't (even that's the only way to book?). Needless to say, we couldn't drop everything and get to the restaurant early to only be able to sit for less than an hour with kids at home and no baby sitter on the way. If you have young kids, you know. Why didn't they call us when they opened? So our anniversary date was canceled on us which was heartbreaking as we barley get out as it is. Disappointed in this location and will never be returning. If you want to try them, go to Chandler. It feels like an entire different owner. read more
