Iced Matcha Latte & Iced Lavender Latte!
    Cassie D.

Visited for the first time today, my bf & I have lived nearby for the last 6 months but we hadn't gotten a chance to try it until now. We loved it!! He got an Iced Lavender Latte - the lavender is pretty light flavor-wise, but noticeable if you're looking for it! I got an Iced Matcha Latte (they don't serve chai, which is my normal iced order placed, so the girl working helped me & even added some sweetened condensed milk which was so good & I hadn't tried before!) -- everything was delicious and served quickly! Also shout out to Irena, she was so sweet and helpful and answered all my questions!

I will say that I am a huge fan of the alternative and eclectic businesses. And when it comes to that retro vibe, there isn't many places in Midtown Sacramento that shine as much as "Shine". This place has been around since 2010 and as recently as 2020, new ownership took over which further added the creativeness that the business offers. The end result was combining a coffee shop, bar, live music venue, kava lounge, and restaurant with small bites all under one roof. Located directly at the corner of 14th and E St. in a quieter part of the Midtown/Alkali Flat, this place can be easily missed with the lush landscaping and trees surrounding it. Parking is surprisingly easy to find since this area is away from all the hustle and bustle. I ended up coming here during the morning of Friday 10/20/23 at around 10:20am before my 11:00am dentist appointment right down the street. Upon entering, it was not busy at all as this was past the morning rush. Since I had not yet gotten my coffee, I glanced at the menu to see what kind of selections they were offering. Since I was craving something cold and sweet, my heart was set on an iced "Caramel Latte". The order only took a couple minutes as it absolutely had the bitterness of the espresso combined with the sweetness of the caramel. I proceeded towards the rear of the building while enjoying my drink. As I mentioned, this place has a trendy, hip, and almost Polynesian vibe to it. The wicker chair I sat on had a plush pillow on it while gold letters that read "SHINE" were directly above that. You will also notice an abundance of live plans as well as paintings that resemble more of a Tiki-bar theme to it. I think the overall atmosphere is a lot of fun when you factor in the live music. I also would like coming here during the evening hours and try some of their kava drinks. They are opened for business 7 days a week from 9am-9pm. All in all, "Shine" is a must-try place that I highly recommend. My rating, an above average four stars.

I came on Sunday to charge my car rental. Luckily they opened at 9am and I was able to enjoy a drink in the morning while waiting for my car to charge. Anyways I came in and ordered something different today. Last time I got a Carmel macchiato and this time I got a vanilla latte. It tastes so weird. I asked the barista (a nice young lady) what was the milk they used. They used the Costco whole milk which I drink everyday. It's not that. For vanilla they use the standard vanilla brand and that wasn't it either so I have no idea what was in the drink. Maybe the coffee bean??? Anyways it was not drinkable. The drink came out to be $7.28. Not sure what I'm going to do with this drink. Suck it up and swallow it or bring it home and redo it so I can actually enjoy it. Next time I come I'm sticking with my caramel macchiato and not be adventurous. Sigh

I was here for milk and coffee drinks with the whole family, and maybe some card games and maybe some chess games... It was super laid-back on a Sunday morning and a delight all the way around

Their coffee is So over-priced! The large regular coffee with milk was over $6 I feel for the Barista, because at that price, she didn't get a tip.

Under new owners, it's really just a coffee shop. The now very limited food menu included a very underwhelming small waffle, pedestrian grilled cheese sandwich ("with basil" means dried basil sprinkled inside). The grilled ham and cheese croissant was fine. A latte was also solid but nothing to write home about. They do some live music on Thursdays but the barista said it's no longer an open mic. Wish the business hadn't had to go through this.

The restaurant is in a really cool old Victorian house, and the staff were super friendly. The interior was clean and looked like a nice place to dine in, but I ended up taking my order to go. I ordered the #19 with turkey, prosciutto, avocado, and swiss on a dutch crunch roll. The bread had just gone into the oven, so we had to wait about 10 minutes, but I can't complain because it was baked fresh to order. Overall, I thought the sandwich was very good, but honestly not quite as amazing as people online had made it out to be. It was definitely good, but I don't know if I'd be dying to go back when I think Ike's, Mr. Pickle's, Corti Bros, and maybe even Nugget or Sprouts make more interesting sandwiches. To me, those places use slightly higher quality ingredients as well, though maybe I just didn't order the best sandwich here. Overall, it was a good sandwich and a good experience. My expectations were probably just a little too high. I wouldn't be dying to come back but also wouldn't say no if someone wanted to go there for lunch.

It was light and tasted like some kind of delicious wheat if no one told me I'd not known it was gluten free. The turkey filling was more generous in the gluten free sandwich than the boxed full sandwich, not sure why that is. The salad was delicious, the oil based dressing was tart but had some kind of sweetness added that really brought out the umami flavor. The chocochip cookie was soft, sweet, and crumbled but still moist and a little bit chewy, totally hit the spot for the end of the meal. All in all, delicious deli sandwiches and sides from Tony's. Due to a terribly inconvenient Amtrak cancellation, the water I packed ran out and my breakfast became a distant memory. I decided to order the garlic pesto turkey sandwich along with a painful bottle of water (For some reason Amtrak has no working water fountains) and small signature mac & cheese for sustenance. My order number was called quickly--too quickly. Staff forgot my mac & cheese, and after a gentle reminder I was presented with a truly small steaming cup. The claim is that the side dish is made with a blend of three cheeses and a touch of spice, but it tastes flat, like melted cheddar cheese mixed with too much milk. My cheese craving was fulfilled, and that would be all Sourdough's signature mac & cheese is good for. It's mediocre. As for the sandwich, what I received wasn't pesto. While I was mentally recalculating my schedule, I noticed what I'm eating should have basil. Peering into what I was chewing, the sandwich was predominantly orange from a sauce I don't recognize and yellow from the mustard. My pesto sandwich wasn't green. No matter, mistakes were made and I'll just save the food for tomorrow. I didn't feel like getting the attention of the employee glued to her phone, crouched out of view behind the counter. I meant to take a picture of my sandwich for this review, but a man kept staring at my bag. He tried asking if he could see my sandwich a few times in broken English. I asked "Do you want my sandwich?" He looked sheepish and said no, no. I asked him again, more firmly. "Well, don't have to. Don't have to have whole sandwich," he said. "You could give half. If you want. Very hungry." I gave my sandwich wordlessly. He gave a quick thank you, unwrapped the package and wolfed down my mediocre leftovers. Again, perhaps I should have fasted, saving a precious $22.50 and bought only water--but at least one man was fed and satisfied.

For starters, Ike's has its own way of doing things: plain mayo is not their thing. Only way to get plain mayo on a sandwich is to get lucky that there's a smidgen still left in a jar in the fridge after they prepare their house spread. They mix GARLIC and gawd knows what else for spices to make their Ike's sauce, so allergies beware. They offer plain mustard, but not plain mayo? For seconds, the sandwich bread is not up to the challenge of holding together the mountain of fillings inside. Pics prove my point. I want to eat a sandwich with my hands, not a plastic fork (or a shovel). And I don't want to wear it, not in public. Proportions, people! One size does not fit all. Now, in fairness, the meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato were fresh, chilled, and flavorful. However, IMHO $2.00+ to add equivalent of half an avocado is robbery when a whole avocado is $1 in the market. Fortunately I arrived when there wasn't another person in the store so I was able order up a plain ham and cheese sub with L, T, and A. The counter person was patient as I attempted to navigate the menu board. I communicated my wish for a simple sandwich and it arrived, albeit ridiculously overstuffed and above my budget expectations. Props for kindness and understanding. My first visit to any shop is always testing how well they do basics. So far, I'm not an Ike's fan. I'm no newcomer to sub sandwiches. A business should not be used as a middleman in someone's personal relationship, and employees certainly shouldn't be participating in that dynamic. What's disappointing is that the establishment had an opportunity to simply remain professional and neutral, but instead chose to entertain what was essentially a personal request. If I had behaved inappropriately, I should have been addressed directly. If there was a genuine safety concern, that should have been communicated through appropriate channels. Neither happened. Being a regular customer does not make someone entitled to determine who else gets to enjoy the establishment, and accommodating that kind of behavior sets an incredibly immature precedent.
