Used to love coming here for bagels and coffee as well as the Thursday night jazz nights. It's walking distance from my house. They have new ownership (and added kava) since the original concept suffered under COVID closures and it's nowhere near the same. Since they reopened, it's constantly packed with teenagers (since Kava doesn't require any age to drink) watching Rick and Morty on the big screen TV. I'm not a covid police by any means, but it's definitely unfair that the original coffee shop had to close because they were following the restrictions correctly and now this place is just refusing to. I would hate to see another business close but I won't be frequenting this place unless I'm somehow suddenly poisoned and the only cure is Kava. Also, it's a little suspicious that all of the top "recent recommended reviews" are 5 stars from people with barely any reviews on Yelp. Yet all of the 1 stars have more recommendations. I imagine that they're getting some special treatment from Yelp through some kind of advertising package which is upsetting. read more

Shine serves not only coffee, but beer/cider/wine and food too. You're not going to get fried chicken or anything but they have sandwiches, salads, and breakfast stuff. It's in an interesting location, I don't normally come to this area because it's mostly residential but that means that parking is better here than some other coffee shops in midtown. You can't miss it, there's a cool mural on one side of it it's right next to a roundabout. I've been to trivia night and jazz night which are both cool. Trivia night is Tuesdays and there are three rounds, two are general trivia and one is a specific category. Jazz nights is a free for all kind of thing so if you play an instrument you can just jump in and jam whenever you want. They have good coffee and a pretty good selection of beer, mostly from local breweries which is cool. They get their coffee from Temple roasters, so if you like Temple you'll like these guys. read more

Super weird vibe in there. Seemed like we were interrupting their conversation/party when we walked in. I thought it was a coffee shop but seemed more like a bar lol. Smelled like cigarettes really bad. Got there around six and they said the ovens were off so they couldn't toast a bagel so they gave me a untoasted bagel that reminded me of the ones you get as a kid in the school cafeteria. It was gross. Coffee was okay. They didn't have any decaf which sucked since I normally order decaf. The area is also pretty sketchy. Won't be coming back here sadly. read more

I have been back numerous times since my last review and today I brought a friend with me who is now a new fan of Shine. I just love their specialty drinks! For the valentines season that we are currently in, they are offering a few sweet treat drinks. I've tried their raspberry truffle (dark chocolate raspberry mocha) and the love potion #9 (white chocolate raspberry mocha) and both were delicious. I plan to return to try their mint chocolate drink and 'when chocolate met caramel.' The main drawbacks for me are 1) they don't offer coconut milk as a non-dairy option (they do offer almond and soy milks) and 2) they don't carry gluten free pastries. These are not deal breakers because I will definitely be back. I do appreciate that they have a loyalty punch card. Shine is a cool local coffee shop that is worth checking out. read more

I've had Shine bookmarked for quite a while... food, coffee, live music?! How could you go wrong? We came on a Sunday morning for breakfast though so we didn't get a taste of live music yet but I'm sure we'll be back! Not many places in town have that anymore. The menu is pretty simple. If you're looking for a huge meal for breakfast or brunch, this isn't the place for you. More like a light eats menu, but it was the perfect amount. I wanted to go for the egg in a basket, but they were out of avocado :( I decided to go with a vegetable samosa instead, which are located in the bakery case, not on the menu. They warm it up and it was perfectly crispy! It comes with a side of mango chutney which perfectly cuts into the heat of the samosa spices. I ordered an iced Namaste latte as well. Not many places do the matcha lattes so I had to try it! They offer it hot or iced. The iced was pretty good but tasted watered down right off the bat. I'd probably go for their raspberry white mocha next time. Service was really good too - they're friendly and everything came out quickly. Do try the Veggie Samosas. They are freaking delicious. Do however, avoid parking on the wrong street. Otherwise this cafe offers you a nice place to wind down and relax. Usually they offer a nice selection of vegan treats but they were not stocked last time I visited :( But they have a real fancy soda machine as well as a bar. Confusing place. I live down the street and went at 430 to grab a sandwich. There's a food menu but the employee told me kitchen was closed. Hours of operation online say 9-9. Is this coffee, kava, food? What is this place? Don't even see a kava menu. Food hours are secret. Everything is a secret. It's not exactly a public place. It's for the regulars only or friends of owner. When asked what hours is kitchen usually open the response was "what do you mean". All I was looking for was a direct answer so that I can return since it's a convenient location. The employees seem to not even understand how the business is operated or what they operate. It may be that old information from online is misleading but regardless had an unpleasant interaction once visited and left with even more questions. read more

I think I may have just found my new favorite coffee shop in Sacramento... Trust me on this when I say I have been to A LOT of coffee shops, and as a frequent Temple Coffee consumer, this one takes the cake for me. Located at 1400 E St, I took the drive from Davis, and couldn't help but stay for a couple of hours. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a wonderful employee who made me a latte and pastrami sandwich. The latte was strong, made perfect for my liking, but you can always add more cream and sugar at their self-serve counter. Don't even get me started on the ambiance. Plenty of space, plenty of lighting, great music, and a stage fit for open mic nights. They even have an open bar if you're one of those that decide to go for happy hour! Events include: Open Mic Nights 1st and 3rd Wednesdays; Tuesday's Trivia Nights; Thursday's Open Jazz Jam; and Friday & Saturday Live Music. As a musician and singer myself, I will definitely come back to engage myself in this great atmosphere. Now, I can understand why they call it Shine: because everyone has a space to do just that. read more

Chill spot at 14th and E in a growingly nicer and definitely quieter area. Easy to get to and usually has street parking in the area. I like this coffee shop slash place that also has beer on tap. It's not usually my go to coffee house since I live on the other side of the city. But I'm always pleased when I come here. The coffee is solid. They have small bites and a few sandwiches to eat. Food is good! I wouldn't come here specifically for the food but it's nice to have something to eat while I work. But!! I would come here specifically for the events! So many cool weekly events. They have bar trivia where you can win discount booze. Pretty sweet. And the host is a cool guy. Also, they have an open mic night. Haven't been to that yet. Also! They have an open jazz music night. I come pretty often to that. Worth going. Not the best jazz in the world for sure but fun atmosphere and neat to see who shows up. It can get super crowded so get here early to get a table or you'll be just standing. Conclusion: maybe other better coffee shops for coffee but this one is the best for fun evening events. I've passed by a few times when I've been in the neighborhood to get a haircut at my barbershop across the street and I decided to give them a try. The restaurant has a laid back, hippie vibe to it. The restaurant is clean and well maintained. Parking can be a little challenging as always since it is downtown but this neighborhood is generally not as bad as others. I opted for the California Dreamin' sandwich and my wife had a samosas. The sandwich was turkey, bacon, and avocado with all the fixings. It tasted fresh and the flavors meshed well. My wife liked her samosas. I opted for a fountain beverage. It was decent but was a brand I was unfamiliar with. Next time I'll try an espresso drink. I really like the vibe in this place. Super casual and the people behind the counter are always super friendly and helpful in choosing the best options for me. Their food menu is always interesting and the iced caramel drinks are the bomb! Bonus points for serving drinks on mason jars! Ate a 'toast' today (egg in a basket) and the presentation was beautiful. The bread was delicious; chewy and crunchy. The only complaint was that for such a big slice of bread, there should have been two eggs in there, not just one that I finally arrived at when I reached the last third of the piece :( I am still looking forward to trying their other toasts as well! I wish I'd read the reviews before coming here. I used to enjoy Shine, pre-pandemic, but this new iteration (under new ownership) is awful. No member of the staff wore masks, which is the first big problem. The menu is also very blah (a microwaved grilled cheese sandwich was the only food option the day I visited) and the service weird. The young woman behind the counter was nice, but she forgot to put in my order, even though I was the only customer in addition to the group of guys posted up at the bar who seemed to be friends of the owner. The tipping point was when the owner put on some explicit rap that was blasting obscenities. It was so loud I could hear it through my noise-cancelling headphones. I won't return. read more

My daughter wanted to check this place out and I was starving and in need of coffee. Well, we all wished we'd have hit another shop instead and I'll explain why, but let me give them a little positive feedback first. If you're artsy or enjoy places with a more funky, kind of off-beat vibe, then Shine is perfect. I mean, they had Bob Ross on the TVs. HA! They also had a sizable stage area, which I'm assuming means they have live music or some sort of performance art in there from time to time. They also have a pretty big menu of food and drinks including kombucha and all the trendy stuff that pretends to be off trend. Now for the "meh". We stood in line for a good 10 minutes , so that was probably a red flag since the lone really wasn't that long. The lady at the counter said the food might take a bit longer than normal because...something something something. I didn't think a little wait was that bad so we were cool with it. Wellllll...that's where we were wrong. My coffee and my daughter's tea came out after about 5 minutes, but they forgot her cookie. So I had to ask for the cookie and the ran back to heat it up and brought it right out. About 20 minutes later, I'm still waiting for my bagel sandwich. At this point I was thankful for the lesson I learned from the Donner party about what a bad idea it is to eat your own children, but I still came close because I was getting hangry! Another 15 minutes goes by and the girl from the counter comes up and asks what I was waiting for. I told her and she's like "oh, um, we gave that bagel to someone else, but there's a different sandwich ready that nobody is claiming if you want that." Well, that sucked because the sandwich I ordered was nothing like the one I got, but I was hungry enough to eat my own flip flop so I settled and shoved the thing in my face and left. Not only was I now short almost an hour of my day, but I was out more than $20 for stuff I didn't even order.
