Just checking in, love this place as a chill and quiet spot to either hang out but mostly study. I notice a lot of people here hold work meetings but also are studying or chilling out around. I love the ambient jazz music in the background. It goes back and forth between smooth jazz and Motown, my ultimate favorite genres. The baristas are nice and friendly. Their coffee and teas are really good. Id suggest their pomegranate and blueberry tea. But yes, this is a nice and chill place to do your work at. I was having a great day, then I went to Shine. Worst food, ambiance, and service I've ever experienced.

Shine is literally a diamond in the rough. This modern and eclectic café serves food and drinks all day and serves as the unofficial living room for the Alkali Flat neighborhood, although their location on 14th and E is also convenient to Boulevard Park without braving midtown traffic. The interior is done up like a fun basement with lots of exposed beams and retro furniture. There is a large bar and counter to order light meals, snacks, coffee, and alcohol. The overall feel is very chill and conducive to long conversations or escaping work for a while. Shine serves Temple coffee and pulls a mean espresso. Reviving the old coffee shop concept with a splash of modern twists is a great addition to a neighborhood in need of some truly cool places. Shine on! read more

I come here twice a week to take a class on zoom before picking up my kids and I have always felt welcome! There are comfortable tables with outlets for devices, the service is always friendly, and the coffee is good. I love that there are always people hanging out too, reminds me of being a teenager/young adult in Europe and hanging out with my friends in cafes. It makes the place feel more friendly and relaxed. Also there is no other coffee shop open after 4 in the neighborhood! That makes this place a gem in my opinion. read more

I'm thinking this my be my new go-to during the week... Of course my expectation for their coffee was high, come on - there are so many good options in Sac. I didn't have that many expectations for their food, even though I was going to order something. I've always had this place on my radar, but it wasn't until a business meeting required me to meet a vendor here. As I walked in, I was smitten with the entire place, the vibe. Its huge, welcoming, and very low key. Plenty of people posted up chatting or working on their lap tops. There is plenty of seating for customers in a variety of options. Toward the back they also have a stage, where I'm gathering they host a variety of performers. Shine brews Temple coffee, so it's a no-brainer that it will be tasty. I went with a soy mocha and we delectably happy with my choice. It was a great beverage to sip on while discussing work related stuff. I also ordered a sandwich and chips to go, post meeting. However, I ordered everything prior to our meeting and they held the food portion for me until I was ready to leave. They bundled the order with my coffee, which was a nice option. The sandwich exceeded any expectation I had. I didn't really have one, but as I was unwrapping it, I did notice how large it was. Everything was so dang fresh, all the ingredients. I ordered the California Dreamin' - Turkey, bacon, avocado, cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, mayo, and mustard on sourdough bread (sans Mayo, obviously)! I didn't expect such a high quality sandwich from this hidden gem, at all. To be fair, I didn't put too much thought in to it either. But their atmosphere and sandwich left me so happy, I want to go back again. Their pastry case looked amazing too, their almond croissant was huge and calling my name. I will be back, especially because it is so close to work. I can totally see making an effort to to get back here. I was so excited when the Shine opened again but the soft opening has offended me. I get up at 6 am and drink coffee mainly in the am but they don't open til 9am. Ugh!! One afternoon I asked for an iced black tea with fruit flavoring for a hot afternoon pick me up. They no longer serve that tea and only offer a non caffeinated green tea option. Ugh again!!! I find the staff professional however last night around 830pm I was walking my dog past the Shine and was curious why the staff member & approx 10 customers were NOT wearing masks double ugh!!!! I can't take the chance that the staff member was NOT exposed while serving customers without masks. He served my coffee yesterday but now I'm too scared. This is a nice place. I came here to hear local artist Katie Knipp perform a few Friday nights ago and really enjoyed myself. The ladies working the counter were very friendly and the performance, well, WOW. Katie was incredible. I sure hope Shine books her again because I'll be back if so, even though I live clear across town. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I had to wait a really long time for my drink. This is a really fantastic spot to work/study while enjoying a drink. I've only had their Americanos and cold brew, but I'm a huge fan. I discovered this spot was open indoor a couple weeks ago, and have returned to study for a few hours several times since then. The baristas are friendly and it's a chill spot. Yes indeedly doodly, this cafe does Shine! Cute, corner cafe in a residential area (which boasts being drug free AND gun free, no less), Shine has indoor and outdoor seating. Colorful, affordable paintings line the interior with comfy retro seating all around. Not pretentious in the least - which I have experienced in some "cute & retro" cafes - coffee is made on demand. I was asked if I wanted my coffee "average, good, or strong"...or maybe it was "weak, medium, or deep"...you get the picture. I just love Central American/South American blends and instead asked for coffee from that region. When the coffee came out, it had a beautiful crema gracing the top. Gotta love that luscious layer! Spacious yet cozy at the same time, I liked the open space feel of the place and its uniqueness. I didn't try any of the food this time, but will sample some next time. Shine is great! About a year ago they stepped up the furniture inside. They just introduced a new craft soda machine too (I may have made up the term craft soda). I wish they had different sizes - only one fairly small size of iced tea. Surprisingly good little food items too, like the samosa with mango salsa. They got rid of smoothies though. Staff is friendly and nice, but not robotic-friendly-fake. This is a low-key alternative to ubiquitous Starbucks or even hotshot Temple. But, for others who drop in to give the place a try, the staff isn't exactly warm and welcoming. In fact, the staff appeared bothered having to explain a menu item, and even rudely pointed at a new group of people gathering near the counter, and told them to "move out of the way cuz we are having a band set up." My second visit wasn't that much better-I'm sure the staff considers itself hipster and prides itself on being cool, but I think the attitude really comes off as rude and unwelcoming. I wasn't impressed with the beverage I ordered or the pastry. My hope is that the quality of the product and service would be comparable to another local spot, The Naked Lounge, but this place really falls way short of even coming close to it.The options for coffee in this particular neighborhood is limited, but I think you would be far more satisfied walking a little further towards central downtown to find a better spot. read more

COFFEE AND BEER AND STUFF YAY! Shine is a pretty interesting place. Most of the time that I go to a coffee place, I don't want beer. Most of the time that I go to a bar, I don't want coffee. It seems to go together pretty well at this place. Let's review! QUALITY/SELECTION: 4/5 Coffee is solid but overall nothing to rave about. I have heard that it is supplied from Temple, but I am not sure. They have less than 10 taps, but some pretty good beers. Food is a bit better than average coffee house food; there are some interesting things but I tend not to buy any food at coffee places. AMBIENCE: 4/5 I like the open floor area of Shine. There is an actual bar with a stools that you can sit on as well as a few couches and table. Outside area has tables but is not gated. Once a week or so, there is a stage with bands or open mic night. It is always interesting, but the hipsters can be a bit overwhelming sometimes. I would say that this place is more hipster than Naked Lounge. PRICE: 4/5 Completely average pricing. What you think of when you hear average coffee house and beer prices is what you get here. Some pints are pretty cheap. SERVICE: 5/5 The baristas(bartenders?) here are very friendly. Orders are taken at the front register and usually come out pretty fast. If you are sitting at the bar, you can put in a beer order but still have to pay at the register. Coffees and food are brought out to you, which is always a plus. Overall, it is a fun place to relax with friends and drink whatever. You can get a good buzz here. I only go during the morning hours so I can only speak of service and quality during this time of day. I've only come here during the morning for a couple meet-ups. It's a cool location. It's spacious and trendy, like the hipsters took to Pinterest and decorated the place. It's SUPER loud if it rains or hails though. The staff is nice. I think they just kind of humor my food blogger ways but they aren't ever rude so I'll take it. I had a vanilla latte here and it was good, creamy and sweet. They serve Temple coffee which is nice. The food is pretty good. The first time, I got a breakfast burrito and it was pretty good. I didn't love the black beans in it and I wish the salsa had more spice but it was good. My friend got the bagel breakfast sandwich and that was delicious. I came here before and after the switch to shine. The baristas have this chip on their shoulders now like they're God's coffee gift to sacramento. I waited for 5 minutes with a line forming behind me watching them just talk to each other. One of the people looked up and was surprised to see the newly formed line and asked if I had been helped. Ordered a coffee finally. I asked if they had cream and lids to which the reply was a tone of inconvenience "ALL items for your coffee are on the table over there!," (points). I lean back and take a second look on top of the counter and under and beside it. "I don't see it," I say. Within 1 seconds the stainless steel creamer is dropped in front of me on the counter and a lid is placed face down and he's back to 'crafting' the beverage that was, apparently, of the greatest priority. The bagels were Kirkland brand and the visual presentation could use some work...2when I look in a pastry case I want to think, "damn, I've gotta have that...", not "um that looks like it's been sitting out for awhile. Ew." I spend $9.50 I believe on the grilled cheese and drink...so I don't think some visual stimulation is asking for too much. This place has everything I want in a good coffee shop. They serve Temple coffee here, which I like. Sometimes they have cold brew from Insight, which I also like. They also serve beer in bottles, and the selection works for me (e.g. Stone). All the employees are great. They make you feel like you aren't visiting a business; more like a friendly place. Atmosphere is good for sitting around and chatting (couches), to getting actual work done (tables, outlets). Oh, and the food is good for lunch if you work nearby. The music here is great, too. I'm not talking about live music, as I have not yet had the pleasure. I'm just talking about from-the-speakers music. Nothing spoils a good coffee like bad music. But that doesn't happen here. Just now I heard a track from Future Islands (from a few years back), then a Real Estate track from 2011, and then a recent Beach House track. It's a huge plus when places aiming for a contemporary feel actually play music that is relatively new. Sure it is okay to mix in older stuff too, but it's absurd when places strictly avoid new music. Most places tend to play it safe with "new" music and only incorporate what has been out there for a while. (How many times have you heard cuts from Arcade Fire's Funeral recently? I love Shine! They serve awesome Temple coffee, have kombucha on tap, serve beer and wine, have a tasty pastry case (with some vegan options), and their food is amazing! They used to do this awesome vegan waffle for breakfast on Sunday's, but unfortunately they don't anymore. My favorite thing I had there was their spicy tempeh sandwich that they had in October 2014 for the Vegan Chef Challenge. They also had an amazing Thai peanut salad. So I moved to Sac sight unseen. I put my trust into my girl's choice of apartment and location, packed a truck and sold my crap, and drove south for a couple days from WA through OR and into... Yuba City? Wait, what? Oh, the apartment wasn't ready to be moved in for another week. So, I spent a week wondering what and where I was moving into. And more importantly, was there going to be any good coffee in walking distance? See, I've spent the last decade in Seattle, a city known for walk-ability, good coffee, micro-brews and -distilleries, fish, organic food, and a shit-ton of cold, gray skies and rain. I've already made peace with trade-off of beer, fish, and organic food for sun and warm weather. But... give me some place to walk to and get coffee that doesn't taste like someone added dirt to hot water. So, we drove into Sac in the week before we moved in and looked at the new digs. Parked, walked around a bit, and stumbled upon Shine. It has all the signs of a quirky indie coffee-shop, from mis-matched furniture to chalk-board menus and a stage that looks to host ... something? DJs? Open-Mike? Who knows, but I'm looking forward to finding out. We grabbed a couple coffees, a grilled cheese and a quesadilla. Indeed, Shine is the host of multiple events, with touring and local bands playing every night of the week. Know as probably one the best coffees in Sacramento (possibly in the World, according to CoffeeReview.com), I'm sure I can't really say a bad thing about it. I did enjoy the way they make their mocha: really chocolatey, just the way I like it. It may take a while for you to get your drink, as there have been only 1 barista the last few time I visited Shine, but I think that's okay. Prices are a little more expensive than the usual coffee shop; probably because it's Temple Coffee. On the 1st Wed and 3rd Wednesday they have open mic. You have a 5 minute shot for fame. They had poets, comedians, songwriters, singers, guitar players. Music was everything from rap to rock to soul. So I'm normally hesitant to spend too much (or any) time in or near the Alkalai Flats area, but this coffee shop may very well change my mind. Of course, I don't live in Sacramento anymore, but if I did, Shine would probably be the perfect place for me to hang out, reasons being: -Coffee. Custom-made cups - I am SO GLAD this trend is catching on. And while it's not as elaborate as, say, Philz, being given the choice of a freshly-brewed cup of coffee with light, medium or dark roast, is awesome. -Space. The location is huge with plenty of seating at tables, chairs, couches and the counter. I don't foresee it becoming a problem coming here and not finding a place to sit. In fact, it's so spaciously laid out, that it's easy to set up camp in a corner and not have to worry about people disturbing your thinking with their mindless chatter, et cetera. -Food stuffs. And not just regular food stuffs, but VEGAN ones. WIN. -All the other necessities that I think coffeeshops should have, like free wifi, a selection of board games, eclectic but welcoming atmosphere, and so on. While it still has a few kinks to work out, I really hope to see Shine become a permanent fixture in the neighborhood, because it's got something really good going for it. read more
