Our luck with great Japanese restaurants here in SoFlo have been pretty much next to none. If we were not going to get great quality sushi we might as well get the most of it in quantity, so why not try our hand in just doing an all out buffet. We heard great things about Shinju buffet and it couldn't hurt to try considering that we would be paying the same price if we went to a regular Japanese place. The expectations for coming into Shinju was not high coming in, so it was a nice surprise that this place came out tasting pretty good. We came here for a dinner on a weekend and was seated within 15minutes, not too bad of a wait since it was pretty much the peak rush of dinner. I head to the sashimi area first in order to get a sense of how fresh the fish is. I use the word fresh very lightly when it comes to Japanese buffets since the purpose for buffets is to serve in quantities, but the taste passed expectations. The salmon and the white tuna had a nice buttery taste to it which is good thing, the smoke salmon was decent, and thankfully none of the other sashimi had a fishy smell. I'm not much of a rolls person anymore, but they were plentiful some good but a lot more misses if anything. My favorite grab at shinju hands down are the crab legs which takes up most of my eating time there, the girlfriend likes them steamed which you can ask for, I on the other hand like them cold. Out of the hot foods, I really love and recommend the tempura shrimp and vegetables. Ice cream seems to be a little off in color and taste, my safe options are the cookies and cream and red bean ice cream. Shinju is constantly busy (but not crazy packed) and the friendly people behind the counter keep rolling maki and nigiri non stop. Those little morsels of delight are tasty and freshly made. The buffet assortment is impressive. In addition to the usual nigiri and maki cuts, you can ask for your favorite handroll, request made-to-order hibachi dishes, and enjoy a superb dessert arrangement including ice-cream. There are several good things about this restaurant: 1. Fresh food especially the seafood - crab legs are the best, so are the oysters. Sushi and sashimi are fresher than other buffet restaurant I've ever been. 2. A variety of food collections - you will find your favorite dish there, for me, coconut shrimp and beef are the best you got to try them. Also the red bean ice cream rocks. 3. Kind and caring staff - waitresses are very nice and the manager is a heart-warming person, it's a great fun talking to her. I don't live nearby but I'm still dinning there 3-4 times a month. I have to say I'm peasantly surprised by this place I've always been weary of all you can eat buffets but this one put my mind at ease. On Monday's and Tuesday's they have happy hour all day were you get 2 for 1 on beers and house sake. The restaurant is big and they give you a choice of a table or a booth. The decor is simple nothing to ooh and aaah over, they do have tv's which I think its a great idea especially if you're planning in being there for a while. They have 4 different sections of food. The first has crab legs (I think they were either snow or dungeoness no bigger then that), oysters, shrimp pretty much your cold seafood, at the end of this section is where you will find dessert they have cookies, ice cream and assorted pastries. They also have a long section of about 10 different sushi rolls, sashimi, seaweed salad, and your sauces (eel, soy, spicy mayo). Then you have your Chinese food section with things like fried rice, Lo mein, orange chicken etc... Lastly they have a hibachi grill were you can choose from veggie, steak, chicken or shrimp to have a stir fry made. My complains would be that the Chinese food was dry probably from being under the heating lamps for too long. The crab meat in the crab legs was a bit mushy probably for being overcooked. The hibachi part if this experience left me not wanting to have it again it was pretty flavorless and overcooked. Regardless I enjoyed my experience, the wait staff was efficient but gave you space. I would come back here again. If you want all you can eat sushi and crab legs then paying $18.95 for an adults dinner and $8.95 for a child is not too bad. read more

On an earlier vacation, my dad and I happened to visit a Shinju Buffet joint after a day of watching baseball. We were so impressed we couldn't wait to get back to the area to stop in again. This time, we brought a much larger group and everyone was as impressed with the place as we were the first time. There is a huge selection of sushi, Japanese and Chinese dishes, so nobody had any issues finding something they liked. Most of us stuck to the really high-quality sushi and sashimi, although this time I did venture into the hibachi and a few of the hot dishes as well. Everything was great. The place is clean, the service is fast and friendly, the food is great and the value is amazing. If your image of an all you can eat buffet is a bunch of gluttonous slobs in a dingy looking dining room, and heat lamps over dried-out and low-quality food I really recommend you give this place a shot. It's a buffet. Yes, it's sushi, but it's a BUFFET. One under $20 at that, so don't expect the best fish here. They have standard selection of fish and they also offer Salmon Roe on their dinner menu. They have a pretty big selection of sushi + Chinese + hibachi menu and I think there's food to please even the pickiest eater here. They also have a wide range of dessert selection (dinner, of course, has more selection than the lunch menu) and I'm told that their tiramisu, cream puff, green tea ice cream and red bean ice cream is really good.I had ikura (salmon roe) on rice, salmon, white tuna, red tuna, wakame salad and regular salad with ginger dressing, plain shrimps, and loads and loads of green tea + red bean ice cream. If you have coeliacs or suffer from gluten sensitivity, I don't know if you should eat here (buffets are always a minefield for us). Even though I'm careful to eat only food seemingly untouched by gluten, in a buffet, cross-contamination is a HUGE issue. Normally, I always have reaction after eating here, but today, I took a gluten-digesting enzyme pill before the meal and so far, nothing terrible-- except for my stomach making some warbly sound and slight bloating. (This place, like most restaurants (especially buffets), is not safe for people with allergies-- eat at your own risk.) Normally, I would be in bed about this time, suffering from migraines and stomach cramps. But thank goodness me for taking my pills, it is not so bad right now. I enjoyed my dinner at Shinju and for the first time, while not symptom-free, I want to go to bed from food coma, not pain. Overall, a pleasant experience. If you like Japanese and Chinese food, come here to eat! From their sushi to even a larger selection of Chinese food to hibachi to dessert (!!!), this place is a bargain for the price. read more

My dinner experience here a few months ago was a much better experience than I had at the other location in coral springs during lunch time much more recently. However, while this place was good, it was no ichiyami! Sushi buffets: listen up.. Time to up your game!!! Ichiyami in boca's mizner park blows every sushi buffet out of the water in quality so it's hard to rate a buffet without the comparison! I did enjoy the oysters here! They were big and fresh. Also, the ikura (salmon roe) was delicious as well. Can't say the same for all the sushi as many were quite fishy. They did have pecan pie here though-my favorite!! The selection is amazing. I have never been to a place where avocado and cream cheese rolls are already made, I usually have to specially order it. The sushi was really fresh and there was everything from sashimi to sushi to salads. As for the hot food, there was hibachi and also a variety of Chinese foods - my favorite was the coconut shrimp - so flavorful. The garlic clams were also really good. The desserts were pretty yummy too. I had the strawberry and butter pecan ice cream and also the creme Brûlée. The creme brûlée was rly good it tasted like a don tot with sugar on top. I reviewed this Shinju location back in July 2012 and I have to say that our experience there tonight was the complete opposite of our first time. Sure, I said that I would never come back, but hey, I am always up for giving a place a second chance and, as I stated in my previous review, the quality of sushi is pretty excellent. The hostess (who I have learned is actually the manager) was very pleasant when greeting us tonight. The very friendly blond girl is still working there, which is nice to see, and our waitress was beyond awesome. Our drinks were never empty, our empty plates never sat too long to be cleared, and she was always smiling and friendly and (unlike our previous experience) did not act like we were inconveniencing her by being there. Again, the sushi was delicious and with so many rolls to choose from, I was full before I even was able to sample all of them. So, whatever happened between July and now seems to be working. The staff was friendly, we were seated promptly, and the service was efficient and polite. Maybe we went on an off day. Maybe we were 14 annoying people. But tonight, we were four people (2 adults, 2 small children) and we had a very enjoyable time. You've redeemed yourself Shinju. High five! read more

I'm not a huge fan of sushi, but this is one of the nicest sushi buffets I have ever seen. They had a great variety of sushi (however, no cucumber rolls for me to eat :( which is why they get 3 not 4 stars). If you're wary of sushi buffets, don't worry, I'm with you on that. I love me a good buffet just like anyone else, but when it comes to sushi who knows how long that fish has been sitting out. But Shinju was actually not bad. In fact, it was downright great. We had some trouble getting seated at first (we had an odd number of people -- 5) so it took a while. Plus, it was pretty full at dinner time. Still, I took the popularity as a good sign. There were many different platters of sushi and sashimi. All of the fish were very fresh. The rolls were done nicely. Some of the salads were not as great (I don't think I'd want to try the ceviche or conch salad again), but the hot entrees were totally on point and delicious. First a shoutout to my coworkers who treated me to lunch here for my birthday. Then another one to Shinju for making it a good lunch for all us first timers. Much thanks! :) Shinju offers a variety of freshly prepared sushi and rolls. They are all pretty good, the wait for new batch is not long at all, and you can also request specific handrolls. Service is quick, they check on your table reguarly to clear plates and refill drinks. The restaurant is really clean and has some interesting decorations (a sky painted ceiling and random kibuki masks adorning the walls were some of the things I noticed), with a lot of seating but doesn't make it feel too crowded. For a buffet, the sushi and layout here is great. This restaurant does not favor people who prefer not to eat sushi or raw fish though; the cooked food selection and hibachi grill is near the back and has a very small selection compared to other Japanese sushi buffets I have been too. But I only eat mass amounts of sushi at these kind of venues anyway, so it did not bother me much. For about $10 per person during lunch, quick service, and fresh raw fish, Shinju is a great place for fans of sushi! read more

Without a doubt this is the best sushi buffet in the county. From their hibachi grill where they make delicious chicken and steak with vegetables to their hot food including coconut shrimp, salmon, rib-eye steak, chicken wings that are bigger than elephants, fried dumplings, multiple kinds of soup, and lots of vegetables. Now let's talk about the freshest sushi. I think they have every color of the rainbow covered. From the freshest salmon served on rice that's still warm to multiple type of rolls & at least a dozen types of nigiri. They also offer snowcrab legs, various types of dessert and ice cream. The sushi is very good and they have exactly what we like, just huge chunks of Tuna sitting on a tray you can as much as you like. That is good sushi for us. The other items like the mini raw bar, crabs and oysters (small but tasty) make it a good value. The Hibachi Grill is awesome, the hot foods in the back are all huge tasty fillers while we are munching on our fresh tuna. The only drawback is the deserts are so-so, the ice cream is good but lacks any toppings, the pastries are not so good. Better fill up till you burst on other things and skip desert. read more

Visited Shinju with some friends and it was an ok experience. While the sushi variety is good, it is not the best sushi you can get, but it ain't bad either. I've been coming to this Shinju for years, and it seems as if they've learned their location and offer of all-you-can-eat sushi will continue to bring them customers, because their quality and service have continued to decline steadily over the years. Tonight we had the worst service we've ever had--a pretty amazing feat, considering you get your own food so all the waitress needs to do is refill drinks, in our case waters. Our waitress was completely oblivious to us the entire meal, and the restaurant was barely full. When she finally did realize our glasses had been empty for several minutes, she asked if we wanted more, to which we said yes. Ten more minutes pass without a sign of our waitress anywhere. We ask the waitress behind us, and several minutes passed with her doing nothing. We look in her direction and she says, "I have to find YOUR waitress, you know," with a serious attitude. We say we understand that, but can you please find her, we're very thirsty. She laughed at us. When I told her she was being rude, she continued to laugh. When our waitress finally did come back, she saw the empty glasses and said, "oh more water, right, forgot." Not only had we been over 20 minutes without water at this point, but the waitress we asked had never even tried to tell her. Within minutes, our glasses were empty again and another waitress had to fill them. Not until our server heard me ask the other waitress for her name did she begin to express any interest in providing even adequate service. On another service-related note, if you're coming here to eat, make sure you don't come anywhere near closing, and by near I mean at least 90 minutes before. Your welcome to the restaurant will be being bluntly told, "we stop making sushi in 30 minutes," making it very clear they are not receptive to late-service customers. Their fresh-sushi timeframe, however, is completely inaccurate because the sushi chefs are done way before that. They won't refill a sushi tray until it's plucked completely dry. I understand not wasting, but you can place smaller trays more frequently. Instead, you end up getting sushi that's warm and fishy-tasting from sitting out for I-don't-even-know how long. And if you dare ask the chefs to make something (well within their sushi-making hours), be prepared to catch some flack. If there is sushi left, each time you take rolls from any of the nearly-needing-refill trays, expect to get a serious stare down. The entire atmosphere in this restaurant has shifted away from customer service to "we help you because we have to, and we're going to do the bare minimum." I hope this review gets to management, because your entire staff is in need of a major change in the philosophy of their work ethic, and it starts with the attitudes towards customers management instills in the employees. The only reason we continue to come to you is because during peak hours the quality is fresh and the value is worth the variety. However, your service has become so piss-poor that we prefer to drive 45 minutes to the Shinju on Glades Rd because they understand that a little appreciation for the customer goes a long way in creating an enjoyable dining experience. Please do something to change our repeated poor experiences at your location. read more

Had dinner there a couple of days ago. My first sushi experience, very good. The hibachi is good also. And from there it still gets better. The full buffet has all of the Chinese buffet items that would be expected (yes, I said Chinese). Personally, I'm partial to the spare ribs. Really good. The chicken wings are very good too. Definitely one of (if not the) best Asian buffets I've found in south Florida. Like others have said, the place is usually very busy so the dish turnover is fast. Nothing beats fresh tempura (huge btw!), ribeye skewers or ribs. Dumplings taste hand-made, hot dishes are fresher and less oily. Sushi & rolls selection is huge, quality is above average. Sashimi Items like seared pepper salmon and white tuna are like what you'd find in a decent Japanese restaurant, not a buffet! Hibachi was awesome. Shrimp, ribeye and chicken, some veggies, seared nicely with the seasonings I chose (everything of course- garlic, chili paste, butter, soy and wine) Service is fast and friendly, and Nicole the manager is a bit saucy with a good sense of humour. If you're looking for a great place for lunch, I'd recommend this location. They are quick to seat people and I've never had to wait for a table. We have been coming here for about 3 months, visiting about every other weekend. The wait staff is quick to bring you refills on your drinks without you even having to ask. This was my first visit to Shinju Japanese Buffet and I really enjoyed it. There was a large selction of sushi, which I was surprise of because other buffets I attend usually don't have to many choices. The place was clean for a buffet and the food were refilled fresh in a timely manner. The waiters were very attentive, but they let you enjoy yourself and kept our drinks filled. The also have an Hibachi Grill but I didn't try it because I was stuff from eating the sushi. I went at lunch time and the price was decent. Definitely the best Japanese buffet with sushi in Fort Lauderdale. There is so much turnover that the sushi is fresh and constantly being prepared. Nothing sits! That being said, be ready to wait at least 30mins for a table on the weekends. Weekdays we never wait. If you are 8 or more then call for a reservation.
