Read a lot of great reviews about this place on yelp so I figured I'd try it out tonight with my girlfriend. We were both super hungry after having eaten all day an yet the did was still mediocre at best. The sushi is is poorly rolled, a little too warm, and often mislabeled. The orange chicken was dry to the point of being hard to swallow, and the red bean icecream that several reviewers seemed to enjoy tasted nothing like red beans but rather like generic sweetened milk with soggy bean skins scattered throughout it. The few goods things I tasted were the chicken wings, the pot stickers, and the sesame salmon skewers. The service was ok, but a little scattered and confused. The staff needs to learn to communicate better, both with each other and with the customers. If this were a 10 dollar buffet I would possibly give it 3.5 stars but I honestly can't imagine going back at this price point. We have been coming to Shin Ju for many years. The suchi is always good and fresh. There is a wide variety to choose from and it's all good. The grill is very good with a choose of meats,sea food and poultry. The Chinese selections are ok, but could be improved. But we come for the such I. The oysters , shrimp and crab are great. great buffet! especially for my dad who is a buffet-o-phile i didnt try their hibachi but i did try everything else sushi was fresh, good; and there was LOTs of it they have wonderful tempura and the pork ribs were excellent i loved the green tea ice cream; it had a real nice flavor to it ambience: we got to watch some world cup and eat which was nice service: a bit slow but fine for a buffet price: about 50 bucks for 2 ppl which is a bit higher than i expected but overall i was very satisfied. read more

Went for lunch here yesterday after a long of class with my friend. We didn't even wait for our drinks to come because we were so in awe by the huge variety of sushi there was! The Shrimp Tempura roll was amazing! Everything else was so fresh! Their Crab Ragoon definitely some of the best I've had! The reason I'm giving Shinju 3 stars is because of the waitress Heidi who kept coming by our table while we were eating asking "Are you done or what??" while hovering over our table. On one of her trips to our table she whisked away a plate and bowl from my friend while she still eating her ice cream. She definitely rushed us out of there, we were gone in like 30 minutes! If you're looking for a great place for lunch, I'd recommend this location. They are quick to seat people and I've never had to wait for a table. We have been coming here for about 3 months, visiting about every other weekend. The wait staff is quick to bring you refills on your drinks without you even having to ask. There's a great selection of sushi which I'm very pleased with. We never went during dinner time so I'm not sure if the selection is different at night. read more

Normally I hate these buffet joints as they tend to be low brow and have Florida oysters which I'm not a fan of but this joint is clean, not crowded or filled with screaming children. This was just the opposite, quiet, polite servers, more "ok" oysters than even I could eat which is one of my favourite things to do at drinks hour. read more

I'm giving two stars because I didn't get sick....but this place was awful. The food is mediocre at best and the sauces were terrible. The ponzu sauce tasted like cleaning fluid and the eel sauce wasn't sweet it was just odd. They come in big jugs and you pump it out into a little cup. It's not authentic at all. Shinju has gotten much better than before. the food seems fresher and cleaner. The restaurant itself is clean but the servers don't seem to speak English at all and that is a big barrier when ordering anything not from the bigger. With All-You-Can-Eat places, you really gotta be real hungry yourself, or be treating growing teenagers to a meal. So we did go in today pretty famished, and enjoyed pretty much everything we had. It could be just because we were hungry, or it really wasn't bad at all. Sushi is decent if you don't expect top quality when you're going for quantity. I ate all the salmon sushi I took, would have eaten more but there's a lot of other food to be had. Although it wasn't melt-in-your-mouth buttery salmon, it didn't taste mushy nor smelly. Hibachi (i.e. flat top cooking on demand) is quite tasty, simple but tasty. Shrimp, meats and vegetables were all fresh and not overcooked. Chinese food section had a good variety of vegetables which I appreciate. Quite healthy options. There's even wonton, miso and sweet sour soup. Go hungry, leave happy for lunch at around 12 bucks a piece. read more

After starving on campus (NOVA specifically) Sometimes you just crave buffets. Shinju is pretty typical but at least wasn't horrible. SELECTIONS I was surprised at the Sushi Variety--sure there's your typical "Americaned palate" rolls (like Spicy Tuna, Philadelphia, California) but there were a few unique ones (I had more fun than flavor from the "mini Octopus" ones--not chewy at all). You can easily just stick to the Sushi side and get your fix on. And as with all buffets--if you're seeking excellent quality, original flavors and texture then you won't find it here BUT this seems to come the closest out of all the buffets I've been to. Pleasant surprise. (I can't speak for the Chinese side BC I didn't eat anything from there) But the Chinese side featured mostly typical Chinese take-out type of dishes. Quality appeared similar. SURROUNDINGS There were many families when I was there. What a busy place! But that's also good because most of the food I saw didn't have time to gel out and become stale. The service was also very brisk and business-like. This place is awesome! and the price is too! the food here is great compared to most all you can eat sushi/chinese food places I've been. Overall I was very impressed with thier sushi varieties and the quality for an all you can eat. The chinese food is also really good. I didn't eat the oysters, but there were also crab legs and mussells. Also they have a hibachi grill! Overall, great food, great service, and clean restaurant! The emphasis is upon sushi and hibachilly-cooked food with a mild dose of the typical Chinese buffet fare which is in fact---well--typical. If you're here for raw bar, there's some, but that's not Shinju's strength. I mean, you wouldn't want to judge a Japanese buffet place by say its pizza would you? Didn't think so. I was also taught never to get buffet sushi but this place had very good sushi buffet style! They also had a lot of other great traditional dishes. Not a bad little buffet, but not great either. The best thing about this buffet for me are the crab legs, absolutely delicious. The sushi is decent but the fish is a little gelatinous. It doesn't really have a good texture to it. I wouldn't go there just for the sushi. The cooked food is pretty good if you get there just after they open for dinner (5 pm). Prices are reasonable, and the buffet is kept clean. They also have some red bean ice cream there that I love. I don't mind as much cause we love sushi but for friends and family that don't like seafood or sushi they will have limited options.
