Lived in Denver for years, and wanted to experience the Brown Palace. Stopped in this restaurant for lunch with a friend. We were seated right away however, it took 5 minutes to get a glass of water, When I asked for no ice in my water, I apparently upset the busboy who appeared to take umbridge with my request and made sure I knew it was a problem. So there we sat for another 15 minutes, nobody came came to take our order, all we got was a curt "it will be a few minutes." The personality free waitress finally showed up and took the food order. And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited,... finally out comes the food yayyyyyyy!!!!! Oh wait... no spoon to eat my seafood chowder, "Ms. Personality Free" said she would be right back with a spoon, so I waited, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited,. Started to eat my Club Sand-which. while my soup was cooling down nicely on the table. I have tasted better food at Denny's (I'm not joking here at all). The chicken was obvious cut from a well used rubber facsimile; it was chewy, dry and tasteless as was the entire sand-which. Yipppeeeee.... my spoon finally arrived, now my soup was cold and tasted like a spoiled can of Campbell's; tasteless, slimy and congealed. Not once did a server come by the table to ask if the food was alright or did we need anything.... To top off this absolutely perfect luncheon experience we were totally ignored as we left the restaurant. Ok then, bye now, thanks for coming in.... HAHAHAHA Thanks Brown Palace for an unpleasant completely underwhelming experience eating your over-priced slop with bad tempered rude wait staff. You should be so extremely proud of yourselves!!!! Third try here as a rain storm held up captive to the area. Server as attentive as he could be but clearly had too many tables to his charge. Onion soup was tasty but barely warm. Cheese on top was a mass clump as not hot enough. Tomato bisque was ok but again Luke warm. Pretzel app was extremely greasy and very salty. Cheese dip was good. Prime rib was barely edible. I stopped in here one night to check out the Brown Palace Hotel and this bar which has an interior that is designed to look like a ship-- there is even a crow's nest and mast in the center. The bar back itself is nothing special and appears more like a theater set and less like a historic bar. The bartender was very kind and waited on me right away. I felt a little out of place here that night. It was all men at the bar talking loudly about how great they were. I tried to tune this out and focus on the interesting interior and the great beer I had. This was the best find of our entire trip! We came in after a work event and was seated immediately! The cocktails were great! The entertainment was THE BEST! We were told Thursday-Saturday nights were the best as a bunch of singers come to hang out and just get up and sing when they find a song they like! The soft pretzel was amazing! It had a little bit of a Parmesan crust, paired with the cheese, incredible! The grilled cheese was the best grilled cheese I think I've ever had! One of the reasons hotel bar/restaurants get a lot of business is that folks are too lazy to go out! That's exactly why this place is in business. Keep in mind the location. In about five minutes you can walk to about a zillion other interesting places with much better food and drink and dramatically better prices. ATMOSPHERE- Old school, old school, old school! It's tiny and dark and of course has a nautical theme. Once again there are so many interesting places just a few minutes' walk that it's a shame to spend any time here. CUSTOMER SERVICE- I have no complaints. I was sitting at the bar and my guy was just fine. PRICING- OMG, are you kidding me! I club sandwich is $19. A burger is $18. I've been going to The Brown Palace Hotel for years as a great weekend getaway for me and Wonder Wife. This is not a review of the hotel or any of its services - just the Ship Tavern restaurant. The hotel's service is fantastic, and its fine dining restaurant, Ellyington's, has a Sunday Brunch which you should really try one day (even though you might have to save up to do it). On Friday nights, around 9-ish, Ship Tavern is a pretty cool place. The pianist, John, is a great guy and very, very talented. Regulars will stand up at the bar and sing and some of those folks are very interesting and are wonderful to talk to. The problem is twofold: the food and the service. Some servers there are pretty good; some are very not good. You'll either have a server who is moderately attentive, or you'll have a server you never see. The food used to be pretty good. I've always enjoyed the prime rib and the French onion soup, in particular. This trip, I ordered my usual French onion soup. It arrived and was lukewarm. Wonder Wife ordered a Caesar's salad which was very, very basic, but not bad. I sent the soup back and the server brought a new one which was also lukewarm. We ordered a baked Camembert which was okay, but the bread they served with it was burnt black on the ends. I ordered a Philly cheese steak sandwich while Wonder Wife got a Croque Monsieur, which we were both interested in trying since we loved them in Paris last summer. My sandwich was, again, lukewarm. The steak fires were hot enough, but the sandwich was just not good at all... the meat tasted reheated and when I used my fork to pick up some meat with cheese on it, the entire big glob of cheese came up in one piece.... obviously not hot. Wonder Wife's sandwich was burnt black on the corners the cheese wasn't melted and it looked like it was just full of mayonnaise. It wasn't, but that's how it looked. Had a late dinner here when staying at the Brown Palace Hotel while on business travel. Two of us sat at the bar while haveing a couple beers and our food. I'm debating between 3 stars and 4. The food was good, but the service left something to be desired. I had the steamed mussels and seafood chowder. My friend had the chicken sandwich. all were very good. The menu looked like good solid fare. A half pound Kobe beef hamburger - for $14? I think I'll try that next time if it isn't 10:30 at night. The entrees looked tasty too - prime rib, salmon, etc. They have a good selection of beer on tap. Locals (fat tire, DPA, etc.), imports (Chimay on tap - not something you see everywhere), and the usuals (bud, etc.). The scotch list was pretty good, as well as the bourbon selection - next time I'll hit those. Didnt' look at the wine list. Overall pretty good, but the bartender didn't seem to interested in us. So service was very lacking. Didn't ask if we wanted another beer until we flagged him down. Then later came over and started taking away the mussels without asking and there were a few left. I'll give it 4 stars because the crowd made up for having to wait. But if I go again and get the same service, I'll downgrade them to three. read more

The architecture is worth a star alone. Old and campy like a 1940's movie set. Galley tables, a few ship models, tongue and groove paneling, dated yet charming. The wife and I stopped in for a nosh. We share a wedge salad, crisp ,fresh cold, great bacon and bleu cheese a basket of fires to serve as ballast, wonderfully seasoned and my wife raved about the crab cakes, almost as fresh as Seattle. I was more than happy to sample local brewskis. The 90 Schilling in parfticular is a deliciously smooth amber ale that I really enjoyed. Came here with my fiancé, and my friend and her husband as a celebration for a birthday. We were immediately approached by a hostess with a salty attitude. We were waiting for our friends to park, so we decided to grab the table. We let the hostess know our friends had a reservation for 4, and we gave both their names not knowing who's name it was under. The hostess explained there was no reservation, so we decided to send a text and stepped away to get the correct information. My friend told me it was under her name, and we were Alittle annoyed because we just gave the hostess her name and she denied us. So we explain it's under her name, and it's for 6:30. The hostess gives us some bs excuse that the "info isn't matching" as if were some random homeless people off the street trying to steal the reservation, for a place that was not even busy!! There were barely any people in this place on a Sunday night. I didn't realize being a hostess was that complicated of a job, clearly this girl isn't even qualified to read a name on a reservation and seat people. Sad isn't it. I finally had to give her the first name for the 3rd time and her phone number. She finally pulls her head out of her a** and seats us. We brush this encounter off because she's just a hostess, we don't have to deal with her stank attitude the rest of the night. Our friends show up and we get drinks and the night begins. Things were fine until our friend was shorted on his double whiskey that was a single, our waitress couldn't remember to get us more drinks we ordered, the food came out and my order was completely wrong. I ordered the salmon entree and a Cesar salad to start. The waitress didn't understand me and delivered a dry hard piece of salmon on top of my salad. I asked the waitress I thought I was receiving the entree, and she tells me no that's what I ordered it's the same thing. I'm like no it's definitely not, I'm not paying for a $40 entree meal that's not sitting infront of me. I have to grab the manager, and she was very kind and assessed the situation. She put in the correct order for me, and all I had to do is wait for my order to come out. I was fine and was excited to enjoy the meal I intended to have. Well almost 45-an hour goes by. Our waitress is too busy handling the new customers who have come in and doesn't even check on us. The restaurant is emptying out at the night gets later. But still no food....She finally comes by and basically is trying to give us our check, when I have to explain I'm STILL waiting for my food. My entire party has been done and our drinks are almost gone for over an hour. My food finally comes out another 15 minutes later. I'm happy to say the salmon and salad were taken off my tab because the confusion, I was happy to pay for my entree still so I did appreciate that. All I will say is this place is extremely disorganized for coming off as "high class" The staff (not hostess obviously) were very kind about the situation, but this was not the night we expected. I didn't want to go into the smoky bar (the only restaurant in Denver in which you can still smoke) and didn't have the appropriate attire for Ellyngton's (even if I had, I wasn't in the mood...). So Ship Tavern it was... The place was dark, which was fine, but also rather small. The bar looks really cool and I liked the model ships on display. Though the service was excellent, I nearly had a stroke when I saw the prices on the menu. The menu was well varied, but $15 for a burger?? And $8 for dessert? To be fair, the burger was most excellent. The atmosphere was okay, though I was in Denver on business, not pleasure, and was studying for an MBA exam at the table while eating. If you love the Broker or the Briarwood, you will love the Ship Tavern. Why do people eat here? More than once? The food is horrendously overpriced, and just plain bad. Bland prime rib, vegetables with no seasoning, and rolls that were so stale I had to scoop out the center to take a bite. All for the low price of $38! The decor is old, worn out, and clearly the management doesn't care anymore. Kitschy nautical charm is one thing but the prints around our table were falling out of their frames, my steak knife was broken, and the wood paneling around us looked like a dog had chewed it. Then there was the exposed wiring in the bathroom. Add on horrible service (after 30 min of waiting for our server to stop by, then ignore my smiles and eye contact, I gave in to waving) and you have a truly awful dining experience. read more

I give this a 3 star because the food is actually very good for a bar. There is a good variety that includes everything from burgers to prime rib - which is nice for a variety of tastes. The problem with this place is some,of the staff. Ere are some wait staff that are outstanding - but others that are horrible. Unfortunately, it is a crap shoot on what kind of service you will get. Example - 15 minutes before waiter visited us - another 10 before out fort drink arrived - never saw him again until the food showed up. It is pretty shocking that such a classic hotel would have such lousy service - even in the bar. Side note - if you really want to feel crappy about the money you've spent - sit at the bar. Very small tavern tables just a little too close for me. We were able to hear the couple next to us entire conversation. I had the Salmon, with spinach, asparagus, potato fingerlings. The salmon was a ver tiny piece with an ok taste. The spinach and asparagus were not seasoned, I usually never add salt to my food but I had to add it here. It is kind of pricy but it was right across the street from our hotel and after a long day we just decided to try a close restaurant. I've been in Denver for two days and haven't had a 4-5 star meal yet. I've got 3 more days let's see what I come across. read more

Ate here the week of Thanksgiving. Our experience was really a good one. The atmosphere was everything you'd want in a place named "Ship Tavern," complete with model ships and other nautical details. The service was very good. We were seated promptly, and our waiter was attentive through our entire time there. Our food was also good. Everything was cooked to order, and our veggies weren't overcooked. One of my biggest pet peeves is mushy, overcooked vegetables! There were cooked perfectly. The biggest treat of the meal, however, was my Chesapeake Bay oysters! They were perfection! After our meal, we strolled around the lobby of the hotel reading about its rich history. Met up with a group of girlfriends after reading about the Ship's Tavern in Sunset. We wanted to soak in the holiday atmosphere (Side note-It's totally worth it to find an excuse to wander into the Brown Palace around the holidays. The views are breathtaking!). There are other restaurants, but we were meeting up for a happy hour, so bar food/atmosphere seemed most appropriate. Our server was very nice, but service was slow! It took us 2 hours to eat all in, and it wasn't because we lingered for a long time after we were done. It seems like they might be a bit understaffed as the restaurant was slammed the whole time. I had a burger and fries. It was A-Ok. It wasn't bad, it wasn't to die for, it was just in the middle. Nothing noteworthy and the fries were the same. This might have been okay (and I even feel like a bit of a grinch complaining so close to the holidays), but it was $18. Would have expected more at this price point (compared to the Cricket, for example, which is both waaaay tastier and less expensive). There was a lot of men here. The ratio of men to women was 10:1. Not sure if it was just the two nights we came in. It was noticeable. My coworker and I were the only female. It's a city restaurant and bar so they don't have a private parking lot. It's street parking or valet. read more
