We stayed at the Brown Palace for a recent work trip and had a few meals at the Ship Tavern, which is attached to the hotel. The food here is pretty decent. I had the fish and chips and the club sandwich. Also sampled the chowder and French fry flight (try saying that five times fast). The fish and chips portion size was generous. Crispy, flavorful batter and a good cook on the fish inside, though slightly under seasoned. The chips were a little soggy for my liking, but passable. The chowder was acceptable. I wasn't expecting anything incredible, and I got pretty much what I expected. It's good - I would eat it again, but not a dish that defines this as a go-to destination. The club sandwich was a generous portion and tasted pretty decent. Only critique is the crust was a little hard - I ended up eating the soft parts and leaving the rind, which is something I haven't done since I was a kid. The French fry flight was a crowd pleaser - mostly because of the tater tots, which were cooked expertly. The rest of the fry varieties were just ok, but the dipping sauce options made it one of the more popular appetizers on offer. read more

We have been coming to the brown palace for years. Beautiful hotel but the tavern has become almost unbearable. We chose those restaurant for my moms 50th birthday dinner. First issue, they wouldn't let me bring her customized fully sealed cake to eat after our meal, are you kidding?! My family had 5 members in it (pretty standard) they now add 20% gratuity to any party of 5 or more! How about you step up to that level of service!! Took our waitress about 30 minutes to come to the table. She didn't even offer us drinks we had to wave her over to ask. Completely empty restaurant tonight too by the way. The food was terrible. My moms favorite food here is the ice burg lettuce salad. She was excited to have it for her birthday dinner. It was a literal piece of lettuce served over tomatoe sauce? Tasted awful. The side of mac and cheese (NOT the lobster mac and cheese) tasted absolutely disgusting and fishy? Will never be giving this restaurant service again and I hope no one else will either until they get their act together. For the price of this place, I would expect quality food and service. First of all I was so excited that they were featured on denver restaurant week. It was $45 per person. You only have one choice which was prime rib... absolutely fine with me. I had my expectations low, but the meal was extremely enjoyable. You get started with the warm bread and butter right away. For soup we got a French onion and a seafood chowder. The chowder was creamy but not overly creamy. I was on the thicker side but there were lots of clams and bacon which I loved. I was a little disappointed in the French onion as there was no broth, just onions bread and lots of cheese. I wish more broth... The prime rib cooked perfect medium rare and mine was perfect amount of fat, but what really won me over was the roasted/grilled veggies, they were so delicious and the au jouis that it came with tasted like French onion soup, I loved it was not overly salty. I could seriously drink it. We ended the night with chocolate moose, which was perfect, beautifully plated. We were staying at The Brown Palace and ate here frequently during our two day stay...drank too! They are juggling with available space due to the Covid spacing rules, but it was working well during our stay. We charged everything to our room to make things easier. Food was good and not too overpriced. Service varied - sometimes super quick, other times not so much. They were always nice though. Definitely eat here at least once if you're in downtown Denver. Drink here always. lol During one of our dinners, there was a pianist leading customers in sing-a-long songs. Good times. read more

My friend had the prime rib, which was through the roof, I was slightly Bejou with the fish and chips, which were outstanding! You can go here alone, and never feel alone, as the place is haunted AF! You could see the menu needs updating, but it shouldn't. You go here because it's this kind of place. Old fashions were through the roof, as for the food as I said. The crowd is a little older than most places. This is not your Front and upscale joint. However, after being open for about 100 years, it is exactly 100 Year Old Place The food will not disappoint, bring your party you make your own fun in this place. The eerie environment makes it worthwhile if you're not that kind of thing look around the brown palace while you're there is an exactly awesome American event. If you don't support these places, they will go away. Don't expect modern anything... Enjoy the experience and don't bring home an otherworldly guest. Yes it's the Brown Palace so I expect excellent service, quality of food and some finer touches : Took over 15 minutes to get our server to our table. Hello, H2O anyone? Smoked goat cheese and tomato appetizer: a 9/10. All entrees were well prepared and tasty.: burger, fish and chips, prime rib, etc. all five of us were pleased with the food. Again, the server was very friendly and kind but took 15 Minutes to settle the tab. Not sure when or if we will return. read more

You might expect an upscale hotel like The Brown Palace to have an equally upscale dining room, but this tavern is actually more like a 60s BBQ joint. The entree selection is somewhat limited, but there are lots of sandwiches and sports-bar-like appetizers. The prime rib was truly delicious, and they make a great burger. There is also a nice selection of whiskey. Service was friendly and helpful. read more

A lack luster experience with rude service. The hostess was less than impressive! The food was mediocre, the French onion soup tasted well but was cold to temp. The waiter blamed it on the walk from the kitchen. A poor excuse for a sloppy kitchen. The high end prices of this menu is not worth any penny of the cost. A hot dog from the 7-11 roller grill is worth more of my pocket book than the overpriced lame food we received. We booked a reservation but was still asked to wait 30 minutes. If I was you look elsewhere this place was probably once a high end premiere destination but I am afraid that it has long lost its glory. read more

Sadly I'm only giving Ship Tavern 3 stars due to my experience. If you ever place an order here for you or someone else to pick up, make sure you get the name of the person who took your order!!! I tried to place a dessert order for my sister for her bday who was staying at the Brown Palace and there was some sort of lack of communication and no order was placed and of course I didn't get the name of the girl who helped me (my fault) but when my sister went to get the order no one had any idea what she was talking about without knowing who took my order it became a real issue. I was told that the items I ordered were already made that day and just needed to be packaged up. So when I heard what happened of course I called and talked with the night Mgr who did apologize and got the order together right away but honestly it was the way it was handled that left something to be desired. They weren't rude by any means but there was a lack of 'care' if you will for what happened. I mean when your paying over $30 for some truffles and macroons at a supposedly nice restaurant inside a reputable hotel, I would expect a better customer service when a problem occurs. On the upside, my sister did say the truffles were yummy and the macroons were some of the best she's ever had even better than ones she's had in Paris! Burger was edible. Both the water and beer glasses were dirty. I was starving when I checked into my hotel and usually, I would look for a good restaurant, not just stumble into the restaurant next door. But, since I was starving I gambled, and lost. The safest item on the menu was the burger which I ordered medium well with a side salad and bleu cheese dressing. The burger was served well done, with a cold top bun and greasy bottom bun. Salad came out dressed with I'm guessing a vinaigrette with bleu cheese dressing on the side. Here in town due to a confrence. Was in a group of 5. The atmosphere is like no other. It is like an old ships tavern. The table we sat at was very unique, it was in the shape of a boat. I sat at the end where the leg was supporting the table so I strattled that all evening. This table should be only a four top due to this reason and awkwardness. All of our cocktails were fine and nothing special. I had the burger and fries which were subpar at best. The fries were way over salted therefore I only had a couple. One in our group had the pot pie which was quite large but not much in filling/substance. The other dishes were fine. Nothing memorable. Seems to be overpriced for quality if food. The waiter couldn't separate our tabs as we didn't tell him beforehand, but then maybe he could he said but "it would be a lot of work". I sent my French Onion Soup back to the kitchen because I thought I was going to have a stroke eating it because it was so salty and it still showed up on the bill. Super overpriced relying on history and gimmicky architecture. The bar is inside of the Brown Hotel, which is quite fancy and old, so probably why it's so expensive, but it's certainly not worth the price. Though the server was nice and gave us some suggestions on places to see and eat while in Denver, the prices were just ridiculous for what it was. To save you the trip if you're wondering about why it's a Ship, the owners basically just decided it would be interesting to put a ship mast in the restaurant and make it nautical themed. I love The Brown Palace! I love the building, the lobby, the tea, their cigar bar, the whole enchilada! So I should love Ship Tavern. Truth is, while I like it, it isn't the best the Brown can offer. Now it is cute. I am a sucker for themed restaurants and the ship's galley look is a perfect fun theme. From the stained glass windows, to the mast in the middle, they have the feel of the place down. Food wise it was OK. I had a Philly Cheese Steak and it was pretty darn good, if not insanely messy (more of a knife and fork sandwich). I paired it with onion rings. They tasted beer battered and were nice huge rings. The problems come with service and cost. Honestly, $16 for a cheese steak is kinda steep! I know it is in a fancy schmancy hotel, but com'on! Also, the service was really slow. We weren't even in a hurry and that was a good thing because if we were on our lunch hour we would have been late back to work. While we got seated right away, it took awhile to get a waiter to come over for drinks and even longer to come back for orders. Then we waited.....forever......for our food. I think the lunch from beginning to end took 1:40 or so. For a burger and cheese steak, that is an unacceptable time. Yes, it a was a busy Friday lunch hour, but only 3/4 full and it cleared out while we were there. If they had quicker service I would up it a star. We have been going to the Ship Tavern for decades and always loved the house-made items, the ambience and excellent bar. We could not believe the changes when we went with out of town guests over the weekend. The menu has devolved into basic bar food with nothing gluten free (it is 2023!!), the house-made items nowhere to be found (potato chips, trout, cookies; where are you?!). I ordered a chicken piccata dish to be prepared without the flour; the picatta sauce arrived about 10 minutes after the paltry entree. On top of the huge disappointment in how the Tavern has sunk to a pedestrian low, the bathrooms were not clean and the entire experience had us sad as we remembered the glory days of this establishment. read more

The bartenders were okay but semi-attentive even with it practically empty. Met my cousin here for lunch as it was a blizzard outside. I got the apple-berry quinoa salad and it was wonderful. She got the cob salad and also raved about it. Our waiter was extremely friendly and over the top helpful. My only complaint is that my salad without any meat on it was $16, however that is to be expected when in a hotel. read more

For a restaurant in a high end legendary hotel (Brown Palace) I expected a decent if not a great meal. This was the most expensive bad food I've had in years. The $22 wagyu beef burger was dry, hardly even warm, and tasteless. My wife's fish and chips was also barely warm. We sent that back and it came back overcooked and greasy. They obviously precook the food and put it in warmers. I give it a one star because the local draft beer was cold and tasty. That said, my wife's drink would have tasted better if they'd used Minute Maid lemonade. Stay away from this tavern unless it's just to drown your sorrows in local beer. read more

Service here can be a bit of a hit or miss kind of thing depending on your server. Sometimes you feel like royalty, and sometimes you just feel like you're filling a seat, but always you feel like your business was valued. The place is usually quite busy and although it's a little pricey (hey, it's The Brown Palace after all) it's not unreasonable. We usually sidle up to the bar from our nearby office with the intent of just one drink and maybe a snack and before you know it a few refills have passed and $100 has slipped away from my wallet. It's time to go home satisfied and more than a little tipsy. The food selections aren't too extensive, but there's a little bit on the menu for all tastes and you'll be sure to walk away with a full belly. It's a pub-like environment but you'll pay a little bit more than pub prices. Everything I've tried during my visits has been tasty and well-prepared. If it's a drink you're after, ask for a suggestion and they'll guide you to a great selection. read more

I tried a graham cracker porter that was on tap which was so delicious! My partner liked his old fashion with 2 Luxardo cherries. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Just left this hotel because my husband and I were assaulted by a drunk man in the Ship Tavern. The worst part about it is the hotel manager and security did NOTHING to man that assaulted us. It's Christmas Day, my husband and I had a dinner reservation so we sat at the bar and had a drink while we waited for our table. The second we got to the bar a white man in his mid forties wearing a grey hoodie began yelling at us and asked my husband if he was looking for trouble because he was gonna find it. We assumed he was just drunk and turned our backs to him in the hopes that he would just leave us alone. Moments later he came up to my husband and pushed him from behind. He pushed him so hard that he also slammed me against the bar spilling my drink. (Hotel and bar staff please feel free to review the camera footage. Time of incident was approximately 8:00pm on 12/25/23). The most shocking part to me was the fact that the bartenders and staff watched and did nothing while this man pushed us and began threatening us so much so that we had to leave the bar. I told the bartender we didn't feel comfortable staying while he was yelling at us. She seemed very apathetic towards the whole issue. She didn't say a word. I went to the hotel front desk to report the incident. The manager was brought out and I spoke to him informing him what had happened. He asked if I could go and point out the gentleman that did this for security. I said yes and walked back in the bar with security (a man and a woman). I explained what happened while we walked back to the bar. When we got to the bar, I pointed out the gentleman to security. He got up instantly and put his hood over his head and put his head down and proceeded to walk out of the bar with an elderly man who he was dining with. I followed behind them, and so did Security . We watched them go into the hotel elevator. I asked Security if they were going to do anything about the assault that took place. The security looked at each other and didn't say a word. I asked why did they let him go without even talking to him about the incident? To which they replied "we need to talk things over with the hotel manager first." So essentially the man shoved us, proceeded to walk right in front of security and back up to his room with NO accountability for his actions. I have been coming here for years and have never experienced such blatant disrespect let alone physical aggression. I understand that you cannot control the actions of patrons, especially when people are drunk and have clearly been over served, but it's very disappointing to see how the hotel and security handled this situation. Instead of confronting the man who assaulted us they did nothing. Which in my eyes shows they don't really care about the safety and wellbeing of their hotel guests and those dining in their establishment. We made the decision to leave because we didn't want to stick around since the mad was clearly unstable and aggressive and didn't want to risk what could potentially have unfolded if he came down from his room looking to attack us again. This is a nice hotel and I expected better from the staff. Like I said I know you can't control the actions of others but to let a man like that go is dangerous and shameful. I certainly hope no one else happens to cross paths with him while he is drunk and angry. Please think twice before staying at a hotel that clearly does not care for the safety of their guests. read more

Lived in Denver for years, and wanted to experience the Brown Palace. Stopped in this restaurant for lunch with a friend. We were seated right away however, it took 5 minutes to get a glass of water, When I asked for no ice in my water, I apparently upset the busboy who appeared to take umbridge with my request and made sure I knew it was a problem. So there we sat for another 15 minutes, nobody came came to take our order, all we got was a curt "it will be a few minutes." The personality free waitress finally showed up and took the food order. And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited, And we waited,... finally out comes the food yayyyyyyy!!!!! Oh wait... no spoon to eat my seafood chowder, "Ms. Personality Free" said she would be right back with a spoon, so I waited, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited, and I waited,. Started to eat my Club Sand-which. while my soup was cooling down nicely on the table. I have tasted better food at Denny's (I'm not joking here at all). The chicken was obvious cut from a well used rubber facsimile; it was chewy, dry and tasteless as was the entire sand-which. Yipppeeeee.... my spoon finally arrived, now my soup was cold and tasted like a spoiled can of Campbell's; tasteless, slimy and congealed. Not once did a server come by the table to ask if the food was alright or did we need anything.... To top off this absolutely perfect luncheon experience we were totally ignored as we left the restaurant. Ok then, bye now, thanks for coming in.... HAHAHAHA Thanks Brown Palace for an unpleasant completely underwhelming experience eating your over-priced slop with bad tempered rude wait staff. You should be so extremely proud of yourselves!!!!
