3 stars is perfect for this joint. I've been here a lot... not because I'm in love, but because it's across the street from my office and It's a pretty decent place to meet clients. I find it to be slightly overpriced, and there isn't anything that stuns my socks off from the menu. Can your socks be stunned off? I'm not sure. But it doesn't happen. Service is on the slower side, but lovely and the staff is great. It gets busy and thus quite loud. Why 3 stars? Welp, according to yelp I've checked in 11 times which means I go to there more than other places (again, for convenience), but I could not tell you what to order. My mom & I went to Ships Tavern on a Friday night after attending an exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. Going to the Brown Palace is always a treat. But having dinner there makes it that much better. We ordered the prime rib, it was cooked perfectly. Every table was full. Our waiter was an older man. He was knowledgeable, capable, and humorous. He was certainly 5*. There were five of us 3 80s and a younger couple. Two of us had the French onion soup which we all thought was very good. For our main course I had the seafood scampi. It was beautifully presented but I would have preferred more spice. My wife had the trout. She thought that it was only average. The food was only 4*. Good but nothing special. Overall the 5 of us judged the experience a 5*. read more

This venue is inside the famous Brown Palace. The decor is old school nautical piano bar and fish house. Bad news tonight was the food was cold. Nothing like cold fish and chips. I am sure it would have been amazing when it was fresh. But there is no excuse for not getting the food out when ready. The waitress did offer to comp the meal. But to me that is no consolation prize. I am happy to pay for food service and quality. Hopefully it's just a bad night for this nostalgic venue. Better luck next time...if there is one. read more

Ship Tavern is an Old World style bar and restaurant in the Brown Palace. It feels like someplace your grandpa would take you to. My experience was just "meh." My drinks were good, but overpriced. I actually came here because it seemed like this was the sort of place that would have bread pudding, but it didn't... so I ordered cheesecake and drank my Royal Sovereign. I will start by saying that I am a sucker for history. The ship tavern is in the Brown Palace and I grew up walking past this building which may give me slightly rose colored glasses on the experience. The food is solid, but I believe where they excel is on the service side. Both attentive and polite, I never felt that the waitstaff interjected themselves into conversation causing the talk at the table to falter. Their beer selections are impressive for a bar that was not built around a model of 100 + taps. Good selection of very good beers. Their fish and chips are proper fish and chips, and likely are responsible for a bit of the extra weight that I carry around because they are rather generous. Their prime rib was great, nice and juicy. The sides were good but really allowed the protein to shine. It was a very tasty meal with waitstaff that really made the experience wonderful. The only reason they didn't get the fifth star is unfortunately due to the nature of the space. It can get loud as it is a smaller venue that does fit a good number of other tables that wish to talk to each other also. read more

Updated my review to 1 star. Absolutely horrible. Our waitress, started out good. Welcoming atmosphere, drinks arrived fast. Then.....we sat there. Looking for her. Wanting to get our check. We had to ask another waitress to find ours for us since we had not seen her for a good 30 minutes. When she came over with the bill, she left again....and walked by our table at least 6 times (yes, I counted), and would not even look at us even though I was looking at her and the bill was ready, at the edge of the table. Old School Dining At Its Best We took two clients to this restaurant for dinner to celebrate their eighty-fourth birthdays and were both impressed and surprised. The hotel and the restaurant are just plain grand. The service was dignified and impeccable and this is probably the most nostalgic restaurant in Denver. The menu was expansive and surprisingly inexpensive and you should be forewarned that the portions in this restaurant are absolutely huge. I had the best prime rib that I have had in years and baby loved her fish and chips. Make sure you save time to tour the hotel. read more

Holy SHIP wreck batman. Not worth your time, money or tastebuds. We stayed at the Brown palace hotel for the holiday weekend AND this was titanic of all dinners....two nights in a row. We had 4 rooms which you would think would warrant one seat at a high top table at the overpriced Long John Silvers bar. To our dismay, the "manager" Russell was by far the worst customer service rep of all time. My family and I have traveled the world and I have never been told to leave. Russell is world class.... terrible. With one hour left until our table had a reservation at 9pm on a Sunday, we were told we couldn't order food because they needed the table. Props to our waitress, Melissa, who was AMAZING and told us to stay for food. Keep in mind there were 8 open tables at the reservation time said. 8. I'm not kidding no one there. What a joke of a restaurant. Save your money. I think the Brown Palace needs to get better customer service training and more guest restaurants. I'm judging the people that actually make reservations here that arent staying at the hotel. The food is Red Lobster meets Applebees. Wine was good. The guy next to us actually got up and left for terribly rude customer service as well. Yikes. Is this place closing down soon or what? First turn off was a very sticky table; plate stuck to the table like velcro. Service was incredibly slow for a not so busy time. No follow up after meal arrived. Final killer is what THEY call a Pastrami sandwich. The bread was filled with some form of relish with small pieces of pastrami added in. It was uneatable and we sent it back after 2 bites. no way worth the $21 they charged. This place is nothing like it used to be. I really wanted to give this Place a good review. The Hotel is gorgeous and so high end. This Tavern is Beautiful inside. Old wood, and leaded Glass Windows. Just so magnificent. The menu is really wonderful! The food was great. Everything was Delicious and fresh. I got Seafood Chowder it was probably the best I have ever had. It was hot as well. The sad thing was all my main course was cold. The sweet potato fries were cold and my Buffalo Burger was cold. Even though it was cold, it was still good. I also asked for no Onion and no Pickle. I was given both. Why did I not send it back?? I never send food back, I know better. I just took half of it with me and would heat it up later. My friend got the famous Burger made with grass feed Colorado beef and regular fries, her Fries were warm. She said also the Burger was very good. They also gave us a little loaf of bread and it was amazing with real butter and some lovely Melba toast. My friend Nancy loved the Melba toast, she said it was one of the best she ever had. I had ordered a hot Green Tea. However, if it were not for our Bus person. I would of never got a refill. Also, our busser filled our waters, brought us lemons ,took away our dishes, and brought our to go boxes. Our server did very little for our table. I told him my fries were cold when he asked. He said he would take them back and heat them. I think that he should of just got me a new order of fries. But, that was one issue in itself. We also ordered one Dessert that was a house specially, the Brown Palace Macaroons. They were beautiful and very good. But, he did not bring us a spoon or any silverware. It came with fruit so it is not really a full on finger food. I would go back, because, it is Beautiful and the food was good. I had dinner here while on a business trip. It is a cool place. They have a number of tvs so you can keep up on the game, they made sure to switch over to the Rockies game the moment it started. I had the filet and it was delicious! The bread pudding is very good I would go back just to get the bread pudding that is how much I enjoyed it. read more

I went here last night for an early Valentines Day meal and liked the place but I do think it's overpriced for the quality of the food. I got a burger and it was $20 when you could get the same burger at a restaurant down the street and it would only be $8. The waiter was on the ball though and knew the menu inside and out. We got the truffel fries as an appetizer and I would say that is the best thing on the menu, by far. The clam chowder soup is a good appetizer to get as well. The friend I was with the prime rib and on top of it being overpriced, it had so much fat on it. They have a wide variety of beers on the menu too! the hotel is really cool though and I would say that you pay more for the atmosphere than you do for the quality of the food. read more

"Horrific" barely scratches the surface of my recent experience at Ship Tavern at the Brown Palace. Aside from being threatened physically by the waiter at one point, the service and food quality alone made for a miserable 3 hour tour. Update: Management's response to my concerns was to let me know my "comped" non-existent meal was sufficient. The debacle started out with our obviously high as a kite waiter having trouble keeping the drink orders straight for the two of us who ordered drinks. OK, whatever, but this proved to be just the tip of the iceberg. French onion soup arrived for one of the two who ordered it. We then waited nearly an hour for dinner to arrive in a sparsely sat restaurant. Thankfully, the bus boy kept water glasses and the bread basket full, since this proved to be my only food. My $44 New York was served medium well, when I had requested medium rare; another person received rare prime rib when requesting medium; and the burger served to another barely qualified as blue. The waiter was obviously annoyed when I sent the steak back for another (the burger person forgoing his altogether). I, however, was shocked when the waiter returned momentarily to bring me -into the kitchen- to argue that the steak was actually medium rare. I'll grant it could have been mistaken for medium if I squinted hard enough... Eventually he decided what I really wanted was "rare." Being generally non-confrontational, I let it slide. Nearly an hour later, those who could make it through their dinner patiently sat as I waited for and gave up on my steak. In the interim we watched the same waiter argue with a table of elderly diners. The treatment was bad enough to prompt someone from my table to track down a manager. The next 45 minutes involved multiple conversations with the manager, the waiter lurking, mutilated checks being sorted out, and my table threatening to walk out. At the point I took my turn to go to the manager to find out what was going on, the waiter pulled me aside to ask "what my problem was." I let him know the service had been unacceptable and he indicated we should "step outside." Needless to say I was taken aback. I immediately informed the manager of the threat, which the waiter confirmed to her. When her response was a pained expression -- I left -- and waited by the doorman of the hotel. My party trickled out shortly after with comped meals or 50% discounts, still feeling overcharged. read more

There are way too many places you can go in the immediate vicinity that are far better than this place. You go in for the classic ambiance but you leave extremely disappointed because the food is ridiculously overpriced for what you get. I was trying to eat a little lighter - ordered the French Onion Soup and the Salmon Salad. French Onion Soup - served in a small bowl with a monstrous piece of bread in it. I was able to get two actual spoonfuls of soup before it got absorbed into the bread. They should call it "Soggy French Onion Bread with Cheese" Much more accurate description but I don't think they'd sell much of that if they described it like that. Salmon Salad with Green Goddess - Waitress told me how they prepare the salmon - Is medium rare ok? - she asked. Why yes, and if the chef makes a mistake, I prefer it to be on the rare side. Salad came, and first of all it looked like I got the ends and bits of leftover salmon - one diamond shaped piece, one long thin piece and another vaguely parallelogram looking piece. All different sizes and thicknesses and as you might imagine, all cooked well past medium rare with most pieces being medium and the thinner spots being medium well. The blackberries in the salad were a mixed bag - some were sweet and juicy and others were bitter and no so juicy. And then there is the dressing. I could not finish the salad after the top layer because all of the spinach leaves were coated/drenched/bathed/inundated/drowned in Green Goddess. Price tag: French Onion Soup + Salmon Salad + water to drink + tip = $42.00 The fascinating thing is that the waitress never once asked me if I liked any component of the meal (she must know the scam that this place is). Note to visiting Yelpers!!! You can find a burger or a sandwich in Denver for under $16! But it will *not* be at the Ship Tavern. It will most likely be every bit as good as those served at Ship Tavern, maybe even better. It will likely be brought by someone a bit more attentive than the servers at Ship Tavern. And it will probably not take 40 minutes to arrive, like it will at Ship Tavern. In short, neither the atmosphere, the service, or the food justify the high-for-Denver prices. P.S. They have a couple of beers on tap, or get a Chimay for $10. Note to Denver Yelpers: The Ship Tavern used to be the "Gentleman's Club" in the Brown Palace. A historian there told me there was a tunnel from the tavern to The Navarre across the street (which was a brothel back in the day). read more

I like Ship Tavern. It can be busy and crowded, but everything I've had there has been first rate. I tend to have the French Onion Soup there. It's delicious; savory and rich, with just the right amount of cheese melted on top. They can do it without the crouton if you want, just ask. Other than that, I get the Iceberg Wedge Salad with Blue Cheese, Red Onion, Bacon & Grape Tomato, the Caesar (which is awesome) or the Tomato Mozzarella salad. All delicious, all fresh. My friend who I meet there almost always gets the Tavern Club Sandwich, which she loves. The burgers are always good, too. We get great service at Ship Tavern. The servers are usually impeccable in appearance and manner. Oh boy, now I'm hungry! read more

EVERYTHING about Madison, the hostess is horrendous. She oozes disdain and has zero interest in being accommodating to people. We walked in at 545pm on a Saturday night, reservation-less. There was easily 9 tables open in the far from crowded restaurant. After acknowledging that we were indeed just walk-ins, she went ahead and sat us at the first table- in the front entryway, by the entrance to the kitchen and the bathrooms. My husband and i asked if we could sit at an open two-top that wasn't the worst seat in the house. Madison entire demeanor was an eye-roll and a snippy "those tables are for our customers with reservations." Umm, ok, but clearly no one is sitting in them (and they continued to stay open through out the duration of our meal.) She moved us to a a two-top 8 inches away from the bathroom table. We said thank you and just sat. Our server was lovely, very friendly! French onion soup was good as was the wedge salad. I would skip the cheese steak in the future. Upon leaving, Madison wished us a very forced 'pleasant evening' with a scowl that can be best described as "somehting smells bad face." Did i mention that when we left, all of those reserved tables were still sitting there... empty? Lose the girl, Ship Tavern. Dear ship tavern, I only give you 2 stars because it waitress was great. Reasons why I will not return: 1) your bar tender sucks. 2) your buffalo burger didn't taste like buffalo. More like buffalo mixed w beef, with mostly beef. Thank you for over charging me for the itty bitty bit of buffalo in my burger. 3) it's ok to change a sports channel when no one is watching. Boo on you for not supporting your local sports teams upon the requests if your patrons. There was not a single eye on the tv. We tried out Ship Tavern for Restaurant Week last week, and it was great! The nautical British pub theme fits in with the classy Brown Palace, but it's still a much more relaxed atmosphere than Palace Arms just across the lobby. The $52.80 deal was a choice of salad or seafood chowder, prime rib or trout (or something else I believe), and pastries for dessert. We both had the seafood chowder and it was delicious! Thick and creamy without that grainy flour taste, with lots of little pieces of shrimp, crab, clams, etc. The prime rib was cooked to order and delicious-- some of the best I've ever had. The potatoes served with it were also excellent, and the green beans were cooked perfectly. I'm very much not a fan of green beans, so that's saying a lot. We were stuffed halfway through our entrees, so our server kindly packaged our desserts to-go along with our leftovers. Our waiter was great overall-- I didn't feel quite as pampered as at Palace Arms, but I wouldn't have expected to, and it probably would have been weird. The price? For restaurant week it's a fantastic deal, and the food menu regular prices didn't seem too horrible, all things considered. Drinks are another story, but you're paying to be in the Brown Palace, not to drink the beer. They validate their valet parking, which is nice. I'd definitely go back for Restaurant Week, and I'd probably go back to splurge for another occassion. read more

Great place to be surrounded by 1 per-centers and enjoy a nice drink. I'd be willing to bet a hipster has never set foot in this place. Too bad too because the eclectic decor and maritime theme seems like it could lend itself to some good handlebar mustaches and talking like a pirate. This is probably just about the only place I've ever seen an 8 year old at a table eating French truffle fries in a three piece suit and fancy slicked back hair. No joke. I did my best to seem on my best behavior in front of him, as I am sure he will probably be my boss in twenty years or so. The food and drinks here are very good, and I really like the ship interior theme. The bartender was a young lady with a quiet disposition, apart from that fact , she also had not gotten the basics down... 1st rule of bartending [especially in a place as historic as the Brown palace] is... Know the friggin soup du jour ...at 2pm... in the afternoon! and when you come back with the answer, know what you are trying to describe. 2nd rule of bartending, be friendly and attentive. Food ordered was good, soup du jour was excellent, bread pudding was beautifully presented, beer and beverage were fine. Time it took to get the desert was insanely long... Cool place with a great 100 year old authenticity. It actually opened just after prohibition was repealed. However, their very modern prices are from the next century! Double Stranahans whiskey and the wife's Buillet and ginger were $47 with tip. More than dinner for 2 across the street!? So glad we didn't have a 2nd round for a cool C bill! Extensive menu of American fare - fish, steak, burgers, and sandwiches. Portion sizes varied. I had the salmon with rice pilaf with a side of vegetables, and it was exactly the right amount of food for one female. However, my friend got the club sandwich, and could only eat half. (Slightly ironic given that the salmon was twice as expensive.) Ordering a burger seemed complicated, so I skipped that page. I'm the sort of person who could spend an hour picking the ingredients for a Subway sandwich. The food was delicious - the vegetables crisp and salty, the saffron rice pilaf light and fluffy, and the salmon cooked exactly right with just a hint of dill. There's live piano music, and I could swear someone was singing carols to the music, but I may be imagining that. We showed up at 7pm on a Thursday night and there was a 20-minute wait for a party of two. Make a reservation. People voted this "good for groups" but it's not the first place I'd bring a group of more than four. read more
