Shirley's, we're so happy we found you. We moved literally the next block over and pass Shirley's on the way to the Y everyday. Everytime we want to try, it's always closed or we just get our craving at the wrong time of day. This time--we actually PLANNED properly :) Shirley's gives off that traditional small town diner vibes, you know, the one where the waitress knows ALL her regulars....that's Shirley's. We were greeted and sat immediately upon arrival. We ordered the Saratoga Omelet, pancakes, one of their breakfast plates and coffee. My omelet was DELICIOUS. I usually do NOT take breakfast leftovers home (just because I don't reheat eggs)...but this omelet was SO good that I actually did reheat it at 3:15 in the afternoon later that day to finish. No issues with service at all. Our coffee stayed hot, and food came out in ample time. I can't wait to bring our visiting family members when they're in town! In retrospect, it was absurd that I initially wavered on Shirley's because the smoked meat in the poutine was made in-house and thus Montreal-style rather than literally from Montreal. My disinterest in international travel isn't their fault, in-house creations are good actually and how often do I rate diners by their degree of meat importation? In unscientific terms, my primary question for the smoked meat would be, is it different than pastrami? And this was a delightful creation, with a clove/nutmeg vibe. Great local restaurant, Shirley's was so good we had breakfast both mornings that we were in Saratoga Springs. The coffee was really good, the only thing that I hate are those individual creamers that a lot of places use. There challah French toast was delicious, and the smoked meat (a Montreal style corned beef that they smoke themselves) Poutine was bussin...Better than any that I have had in Canada. Shirley's is a West Side standby with chatty regulars, wisecracking waitresses and a cook who polishes the stainless in his idle moments like Thomas Keller. Five stars for the atmosphere, but the food wasn't my favorite. Order caesar salad and you'll get chopped lettuce, croutons, sprinkled parmesan and a packet of Ken's salad dressing. The "famous" grilled cheese sandwich was made with tasteless American cheese when cheddar would have been so good. Apple pie included in the Restaurant Week menu was cold and underbaked. Of note, this is one of the few places in town (maybe only one?) with a variety of poutine choices on the regular menu, not a special. read more

What a disappointment. I went one morning after working a night shift so the place wasn't busy;I was one of 3 tables there. They took my order quickly and my food came out fast; and that's the end of the good news. Potatoes lacked seasoning and omelette was average. Waitress gave me my bill a few minutes after getting my food and never checked on me again. I sat for over 15min waiting for her to come around so I could request a to go box, but she never came around again. I had to go to the counter to ask for a container. I was so disappointed with the service that I didn't receive that I only left a 15% tip. I was sad at this experience; I was hoping to have a new breakfast spot to go after work. read more

Small but mighty diner that serves delicious food with friendly service and fair prices. I stopped to Shirley's on a Monday morning to have brunch with my family and it was packed! Which to me meant the food had to be great. After being seated we were able to order within 5 minutes. 15 minutes after ordering our food was heading to our table. There were no complaints only empty plates from my children who ordered breakfast entrees. I will definitely keep Shirley's on my favorites list of places to dine with my daughters whenever we are in the Saratoga Springs area. read more

Stopped in for breakfast on 5/9/26, told to sit anywhere. Seated ourselves and received menus right away, and told someone will be right with us. Another couple came in 5 minutes after us, seated next to us, received menus and ordered coffee and received their coffee. And we still did not have anyone wait on us. My husband and I traveled to Saratoga today to dine at Shirley's. This diner is truly a treat! We decided to sit close to the entrance. I had a view of the entire place: immaculately clean, tables are set up so guests have plenty of space, and the waitstaff are friendly and go out of their way to accommodate you. We both dined on their hot turkey dinner--it was spectacular: moist turkey with stuffing, real mashed potatoes, the absolute best carrots I have ever eaten as well as a good size portion of cranberry sauce, too. Reminded me of my Mother's Thanksgiving meal as the gravy had the perfect turkey flavor--our meals were ample and prepared with great care. They arrived very hot and we truly appreciated that. What a friendly hometown diner! It wasn't real busy at the time I was there (thank goodness because I had my two year old niece on a mission. There was a couple having a late lunch. The gentleman was reminiscing about days gone by when he was a child having breakfast at this diner. My little niece had to say hello. The owner came in with Christmas decorations that he started sprinkling around. It is a very friendly place. The server was very friendly and patient. I appreciated that. We ordered a club and a grilled Reuben,, a salad, a children's meal with chicken fingers and french fries and drinks. All yummy and served quickly. Shirley's exceeded my expectations. It was a chaotic Sunday morning at a diner, but I wasn't expecting anything different in terms of ambiance. The owner sat us and warmly and enthusiastically welcomed us to " the greatest place on earth." He oriented us to the menus and their weekly offerings. We were surprised to learn they serve dinner 7 nights a week! Anyway, for me, home fries say a lot and Shirley's home fries are on point. There were so many choices on the menu that looked amazing. I settled on having a healthy omelette wrapped in a crepe and it was to die for. The crepe is soft and sweet and it carried the filling well. I might add bacon next time. My partner had the Rachel (pastrami) sandwich and it was absolute perfection. We had been saying for a while we wanted to try Shirley's and we will definitely be back now that we know there is this gem so close by. Great job! read more

This is the spot for breakfast/brunch if you are in a rush but want a hot meal. We arrived and there was a sign to sit yourself. Then the waitress came and asked what we would like to drink. Immediately she brought us coffee and water. Within 5 min she came back to get our orders. I ordered the country breakfast which included 2 eggs any style, sausage (links or patties) bacon, home fries/ hash browns with either pancakes/french toast. I mean it was a big breakfast while my date ordered the healthy omelette with home fries and bacon strips and rye toast on the side. I've been coming to Shirley's since the early 1970s, and they've always been a reliable source for a fantastic home-style meal. Some years ago, the restaurant passed out of the original family's hands, and I had grave concerns, but found the quality and service undiminished. I'm delighted to report that this is still the case! All the way up from Virginia, my Bride and I regaled each other with tales of our memories of the poutine here. And today, we had it! I ordered the Big Guys - a platter of classic poutine with bacon, sausage, caramelized onions and mushrooms on top. My Bride got the Veggies poutine, which is a platter of classic poutine with caramelized onions, spinach, and green peppers on it. Both were excellent- the gravy was thick, smooth, and rich. We ordered the Smokey Bagel, home fries, and a side of hash, and a Fried Egg Sandwich with Sausage patty, side of hash browns, and a pancake. Omg Shirley, where are you girl? I wanna give you a hug. This is definitely just a mom and pop looking little diner with a small parking lot. Little do you know, it's filled with Canadians who know a thing or two about meat and gravy. While in Saratoga, my mission was to eat poutine every day. Don't worry folks, mission accomplished. Shirleys by far takes the win on best poutine. Fresh crunchy fries, huge huge chunks of cheese and a gravy so thick and tasty it'll knock your socks off. Just seriously delicious. I'm trying to convince my boyfriend that we need to get an order to go before we leave! I also got their house roasted turkey wrap. Delicious, a huge amount of meat in a nice spinach wrap. My boyfriend got breakfast and he loved it. He also got a side of Canadian smoked meat. He loved it, it almost looks like bacon but it's beef. He compared it to a pastrami and ate every last bite. The place itself has a very homey feel too. All the servers are so nice too. I've had good service but you can tell these ladies just go above and beyond. Such a cozy welcoming restaurant! They even have bar seating if you prefer. Very little wait for our food as well. I really enjoyed the sausage links and my husband enjoyed the waffle the most. I had 2 eggs over easy with bacon, sausage and french toast with a side of wheat toast (shared all this with my 19 month old.) I can share that I enjoyed the option of shredded potatoes if home fries (home fries!) Also a sausage link or a party (party!) My eggs were cooked perfect. My bacon was ordered extra crispy- which it wasn't. If I lived close by I would visit every so often but it's quite the commute from RI! read more

This was a really neat find. I've never come across a Candian restaurant before, but this one was great. It is a Quebec-style diner, with breakfast and lunch. Their food is delicious, the prices fair, the service good, and the portions incredible! I really enjoyed the Montreal smoked meat, which I did not know previously exsisted. It is similar to pastrami, but leaner with a more pronounced peppery flavor, with less sweetness. I had it in a delicious crepe, but it is available in a number of ways. My nephew had the poutine, which was amazing. If you're not familar with the Quebecois speciality, its really good French fries, covered with brown gravy and cheese curds. It's as good as you imagine. This is a great spot for breakfast if you're in the area. It was a wonderful way for us to start the day before an afternoon at the racetrack. Highly recommended!
