    Been going to Shiro for years and have never had a bad meal. It's one of the few places in town that we continue to frequent. It's been ages since we dined in but service was excellent on a Wednesday evening. Happy they still offer 20% off all nigiris (Tuesday to Thursday)! We ordered green tea ($1.50), bluefin negitoro roll ($6.75), umeshiso roll ($4.20), special scallop roll ($6.50), yuzu pepper tonkatsu roll ($5.00) and about a dozen nigiri (saba, butter fish, hotate and hamachi). Fresh, simple and executed to perfection. Shiro's the best for fresh, quality sushi. Can't give more praise than that, just go.

    I'm on the hunt for the best sushi in Vancouver! A friend had recommended Shiro and said that they're one of his favourites. Our party of 2 was able to get seated pretty quickly at ~6-7pm on a Friday, which was surprising. It's quite small inside but adds to the home-y feeling of the restaurant. Upon my first bite, I was so surprised by the sushi rice! They seasoned it so well and was probably some of the best sushi rice I've had. It didn't have a overly vinegary taste and the rice was stuck together well without it being hard to chew. For rolls, we ordered the Shiro special roll ($8.75), Chopped scallop roll ($6.50), Unagi roll ($7.50), Alaska roll ($7.50), and Bluefin negitoro roll ($6.75). Honestly all of them were very delicious but I'd say the ones you HAVE to try are the Shiro special, Alaska, and bluefin negitoro. Their tuna is very fatty and oily and of a high quality. The salmon was also really fresh. In comparison, the chopped scallop and unagi paled to their fish-based rolls but both were still very decent. We also ordered aomori apple juice which are known for their sweet apples and worth a try as well. Menu is quite limited compared to other sushi spots but I'd say there's something for everyone (cooked food and sushi). I'd say the rolls are on the pricier end but worth every penny. Some free street and lot parking in front of the restaurant which is always a plus for me. I am definitely visiting again!

    We got an assortment of nigiri along with our usual rolls tonight and the quality of fish stands out as some of the best in vancouver! The alaska roll, salmon negitoro roll (special of the night) and the shiro roll were delicious with a nice light layer of rice wrapping fresh and flavourful seafood. The crunch roll was a little fishy tonight but still very good. The stars of the night were the delicious nigiris including the chopped scallop that had plenty of plump and lightly dressed scallops as well as the butterfish that really did taste like butter in your mouth! The toro, uni and hamachi were all of good quality as well and their rice below is also well flavoured. Overall, for some more expensive but quality sushi, shirt is a MUST visit!

    This place is just OK. I was in the area and decided to try it out. One of my favorites, Dream Sushi, closed down, and I've been on the hunt for a new favorite (that isn't downtown, lol). I love sushi and occasionally like to pick it up/have it delivered for dinner. It's a small place. Their entry is super small. So small she the hostess had me wait outside in the cold (730 p.m.) to wait for my order. She said ten minutes and she was bang on, exactly ten minutes. I ordered the avocado roll and California roll. The avocado roll was good, but the California roll was mediocre. It had a chunk of "crab" instead of the shredded kind. I didn't like it. So, am I going to go out of my way to get sushi from here. No. I'm still on the hunt for a new favorite go-to.

    To create great classic style sushi, you need discipline, practice, and the innate feel for it. There is no hiding behind strong tasting flavours or rich and fancy sauces, it is simply one ingredient over rice. A subtle mistake can ruin the entire dish. Shiro is one of the better restaurants where you can get good quality Edo sushi at a reasonsable price. This long-standing restaurant has and still consistently deliver great tasting dishes to satisfy your sushi cravings. While takeout is always subpar to dining at the establishment, they still tasted amazing on this occasion. This is a must try for any sushi lovers.

    Shiro is still take out only but their food quality hasn't dropped at all! Recently we tried their salmon skin sunomono which was unique and tasty if you're into salmon skin a la BC rolls. We also tried their yakisoba, aburi, karaage, unagi roll and tuna tataki. Their yakisoba has a unique lighter flavour which was a nice take on the usually heavy flavoured sauce, might be unique to Shiro. Their karaage is also very tasty and not too heavily breaded. Highly recommended!

    Great sushi spot! The freshness and selection are top-notch. It's a smaller restaurant, so be prepared to put your name down and wait outside, (no reso's) but it's totally worth it. The sushi here is really good - everything was fresh. The staff were so polite, adding to the overall excellent experience.

    BEST SUSHI EXPERIENCE yet! Every dish wasls consistent lly delicious and fresh So glad I live 5mins walk from this place. My friends and I decided to eat here because of the proximity to my place. We went on a Friday night so the place was packed but wait time wasn't too bad as we went around closing time. Staff is friendly and fast. We ordered: Spicy agedashi tofu - the best I've tried thus far! The spiciness was actually incorporated inside the tofu itself. The sprinkle of green onions gave a subtle hint of freshness and the sauce was flavourful! The tofu held it's firmness but was also soft Takoyaki - simply amazing! I could taste the bits and pieces of squid. Gyoza - average, I have nothing bad nor good to say Tuna and salmon sashimi - big, tender pieces! Very buttery and mouth-watering. Definitely fresh looking and tasting! Shiro special roll - 6 different kinds of fish and you can actually see and taste the chunks! Again, very fresh Spam sushi - very soft and surprisingly, the spam flavour didn't override the other flavours Scallop roll - not my favourite but it was fresh Tuna belly roll - very rich and fatty!

    Shiro is one of my favourite places in town to get quality, fresh sushi. It's one of the few restaurants that we've been to multiple times. You'll find them in a small plaza with Passion 8 and Vij's within reach. The inside is small with 8 seats at the sushi bar and 8 tables for the rest of the restaurant. Service is excellent; staff are friendly, attentive and constantly refilling water and/or tea. Menu is split into appetizers, BBQ, deep fried, sashimi, rolls, vege roll, nigiri, combination, tempura, noodles and donburi. They also have a few desserts. Trip #1 First visit we came on a Sunday evening and the place was packed. - Hiyashi waianae ($3.75) - crunchy, delightful seaweed salad starter. - Butterfish sashimi ($13.95 for 5 pieces) - buttery, silky, smooth. - Special scallop roll ($5.95) - another staple we always get. Fresh and good quality. - Toro sashimi ($13.95 for 5 pieces) - fresh and delicious. - Crunchy yuba & eggplant nibitashi ($4.95) - interesting texture of soy bean curd. Lightly deep fried which balanced nicely with the marinated eggplant. - Assorted sushi ($14.75) - tuna, salmon, ika, tako, saba, hokki clam, ebi and tuna rolls. Everything was fresh. Seriously a good deal. Trip #2 Second time, we dropped in on an early Wednesday evening (around 6:00pm). - Aburi battera ($9.95 for 6) - tightly packed rice. Good first bite to start our meal off. - 2x Edamame ($3.95) - slightly warmed up and seasoned. - Chef's special sashimi ($19.95 for 10 pieces) - blue-fin tuna, salmon, striped jack, butterfish and Spanish mackerel. It's a bit on the small side but beautifully presented and consistent. - 2x Blue-fin negitoro roll ($5.50), chopped scallop roll ($5.75) and Philadelphia roll ($6.00) - the blue-fin negitoro roll was out of this world. S flavourful and the tuna just melts in your mouth. I ate three myself! The Philly roll was my least favourite but that's because I don't enjoy cream cheese in my sushi. - Chicken karaage ($7.20) - these came out piping hot, crunchy yet tender. Make sure you dip in the sauce. - Tuna sashimi ($17.00 for 9 pieces) - fresh, quality tuna. - BC roll ($4.95) and yam tempura roll ($5.95) - BC roll was standard. Yam tempura was better. - Spicy tuna roll ($5.50) and crunch roll ($6.00) - the tuna is incredibly smooth, almost melt in your mouth. Crunch roll was just as good but with an extra bit of texture. - Soft shell crab tempura ($9.95 for 6 pieces) - again, perfectly deep fried and not greasy. Trip #3 Third trip was on a Monday evening (around 7:30pm) and the place was packed. We wrote our names down and waited about 20 minutes for a table. - Salmon sashimi ($11.75 for 5) - pieces are small and delicate but quality is good. - Omakase 3 piece nigiri ($7.50) - this was one of their specials. They brought us a hotate, shima-aji and blue fin tuna. Each piece was excellent. - Salmon and avocado roll ($6.25) - avocado was fresh and creamy. - Tempura roll ($6.75) - Crunch roll ($6.25) - again, that extra texture makes this roll. - Ume shiso roll ($3.45) - one of my favourite, go to vegetable rolls. Perfectly balanced. - Negitoro roll ($5.25) - quality. Trip #4 to #6 They have a 20% off happy hour deal (4:00pm to 5:00pm daily). - Aburi battera ($9.95 for 6) - still solid. - Nigiri - two saba ($2.85), hamachi ($3.25), amaebi ($4.25) and tamago ($2.50). The tamago was fantastic; eggy, sweet and almost cream like. Amaebi comes with a deep fried head. Saba had green onion and ginger added on top. - Chef's special sashimi ($19.95 for 10) - we were given wild sockeye salmon, tuna, saba, butterfish and hamachi. Butterfish is still the best, most unique thing you can get from Shiro. The saba was surprisingly delightful. We don't order much saba sashimi but might have to start. - Toro sashimi ($13.95 for 5) - creamy, buttery, melt in your mouth goodness. We savoured these slices. - Negitoro roll ($5.25) - Ume shiso roll ($3.45) - Special scallop roll ($5.95 - Nigiri - two akami ($3.50), two chu-toro ($3.85), two spot prawn ($3.95) and a tamago ($2.50). - Chef's special sashimi ($19.95 for 10) - we were given wild sockeye salmon, tuna, saba, butterfish and its. - Aburi butterfish box ($12.00 for 6) - Chicken with salty sauce ($4.95) - was one of their dinner specials. Very tender and savoury. - Aburi saba sashimi ($7.80) - another of their dinner specials; order it! Fantastic bite with an addictive, tasty sauce. - BBQ salmon belly ($5.50 - salmon belly was a touch dry. - Roll combination ($15.75) - negitoro roll, tempura roll and California roll. Negitoro is always a winner. The others were standard. - Futomaki ($7.45) and 2x chopped scallop roll ($5.95) - first time trying one of their "bigger" rolls. - Nigiri - decided to be fancy and ordered two blue fin chu-toro ($3.85), two king salmon ($3.85), tamago ($2.50) and toro ($3.65). Delicious. Great meals every time we come to Shiro! One of my top sushi spots in the city.

    Another unassuming restaurant that serves high quality, no-fuss sushi at a reasonable price. It's hard to come across authentic Japanese restaurants these days, so when I find one, it's like finding a rare piece of treasure. We used ubereats for this order and had no issues with the delivery (prices based on ubereats). We definitely ordered too much for 2 people, but finished off nevertheless since it tasted so good! Chicken Karaage (3/5) - $7.95 Taste: The chicken karaage was good, but not the absolute best fried chicken I've had. I think it lacked a little bit of flavour and because we ordered delivery, it was missing the crispiness that I would usually expect in chicken karaage. Portion Size: Good for 1-2 people. Salmon Sashimi (4/5) - $19.25 Taste: They serve their salmon sashimi with wild salmon which I typically don't order - I liked it, it was fresh, lean and cut in a good sashimi sized bites! Portion Size: 9 pieces Assorted Sushi Rolls (5/5) *MUST TRY* Kazu Roll - $8.25 Spicy Tuna Roll - $5.95 Shiro Special Roll - $8.95 Natto Roll - $3.75 Salmon Avocado Roll - $6.95 Taste: You can tell that their sushi rolls are prepared with delicate care - the fish is extremely fresh and the presentation of the rolls are well put together. I liked the Shiro roll (6 kinds of fish & masago) which is their signature but I absolutely LOVED the Kazu roll which has tuna, salmon, hotate, and ebi. And for my natto-lovers out here, they serve natto rolls (fermented soybean rolls) which I am absolutely ADDICTED to!!! Portion: 5 pieces for the big rolls, 6 pieces for the small rolls [Value for Money] You can expect me to come back again and again, good value for the quality of the food. If you're looking for a spot to eat a clean meal, then this is the place to be!

The bamboo divider running through the middle of the space gave it a cozy, modern Japanese-inspired feel, and the overall atmosphere was probably my favorite part of the experience. As for the food, unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I ordered the seafood sizzler bowl, and while it wasn't bad by any means, it felt underwhelming for the price. The bowl was mostly rice, with a few small prawns, tiny scallops, a little roe, and some crab mixed in. I was expecting something more seafood-forward, so it ended up feeling more like a deconstructed fried rice than the premium dish I had envisioned. Same with the unagi bowl, couple small pieces of unagi cut up... The appetizers were actually the highlight of the meal and ended up being more memorable than my main course. I kept waiting for a dish to really wow me, but nothing stood out enough to make me crave a return visit. Maybe I just ordered the wrong items, because I know this place has plenty of fans. Overall, I'm glad I tried it, but based on this visit, I don't see myself making a special trip back.

    Maybe it's an American thing to linger and enjoy a dining experience. To stay longer than needed to…read moresoak up the ambiance and give a good moment some extra time for memories. But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was.
