I went to Shiv Sagar looking for a casual Indian lunch and I had some of the best Indian food I've ever had in my whole life! I was uninformed as to what most of the dishes were when I went in, so I struggled with the ordering process, but the lady who took my order was very nice to me. I ordered the vegetable biryani, and it was perfect: pretty spicy and just the right amount of food. I also got the paav, which is basically hamburger buns that are toasted and buttered. I ate mine with the Biryani rice and dipped it in the sauces. I tried bite of my friend's chole batura, which was absolutely phenomenal and I'll be sure to get next time. This place is amazing and underrated. If you are familiar with Indian cuisine and specifically vegetarian Indian cuisine, chances are you will find items you have never tried before. It is extremely reasonable and the service is efficient. On an average night you will queue up for 10ish minutes to place your order. Once seated you will listen for your number and most likely have to retrieve your items in two to four trips. The clientele is almost exclusively Indian, the food is authentic and verifiably excellent. Wherever you live in Houston, it is worth crossing town to experience this hidden gem. read more

Ok first warning here...know your food! The menu here has no description of what each dish is, it just lists its name and a price. Now I was a little lucky in that a co worker of mine eats here a lot and has shared some of his food on ocassion, so I sort of knew what I was looking for. And by that, I meant that I was able to get to the front of the line eventually and describe what I was looking for. It's pretty tough also that I just described dishes and he just said yes ok and wrote it down. All I can really say is the chickpea curry, and the pureed vegetables are freakin delicious, but if you ask me for the name of the dish I'll give you a blank stare. But, this place is cheap (not like 20 dollars a curry like other places...Ashiana I'm looking at you), and has large portion sizes. It is also vegetarian so don't come in here looking for chicken or lamb. Do yourself a favor and come with someone who has either been here before, or knows the cusine and thus knows what the menu is actually describing. The people that work here are a gem. We forgot to pay, I called them to pay over the phone and they told me " no problem next time you come in you can pay for your meal". I love this place as it's as close to "mum's home cooking" as I've found in Houston. I even brought my Gujarati parents here when they were visiting and they were impressed. Note, this is not a fancy place, just a place to get a solid plate at a reasonable price. I love that they have thalis with rotating options. My favorite was the sev puri, served just like they do in India. The only downside is that your order comes out as it's ready so you have to keep going up to retrieve your food once you've sat down and already started eating the dishes that came out earlier. Great place for Indian Street/ fast food. We have become regulars here . Clean and fairly inexpensive. Owners are friendly and the food is pretty good, though some dishes are on the sweeter side. Must haves - Pani puri's - simply awesome, Masala Chai. Their south indian dishes are worth a mention too as they are very good value for money and full of taste. Give the Pau Bhaji a miss if you like it spicy. Otherwise a great place to take the family without hurting the pocket. read more

Best chole bhatura in Houston, hands down. All vegetarian, and vegan-friendly restaurant. Veggie samosas are flaky and delicious. Counter service is a little awkward, as you have to choose your table before you order at the counter, and the lady who announces the ready orders is hard to hear. Best coffee in town, IMHO - the coffee was mixed with milk before boiled, giving the currdle that was special. As for the food, I like the sabudana vada, samosa, phav baji, aloo tikki and butter dosa. Most people come fere for the thali platters and phav baji. This place received only 2 stars as the only two things which are worth talking about are their pav bhaji and rava dosa. We ordered the sev puri, pav bhaji, wada pav, chikoo (sapota) milk shake, masala lassi and falooda. The sev puri was OK. The pav used for both the wada pav and pav bhaji was a sweet bun bread. Thats NOT okay :( The bhaji was pretty good though. The rava dosa ( onion and green chilli) was pretty decent and so was the sambhar and chutney with it. The chikoo milkshake and the falooda were a disaster!! The milkshake was not chilled, didnt have traces of chikoo and was not sweet either. The falooda was warm :(( The worst part is the service. Cause there is none. You stand in a que to order food. Then go and collect it as well which is fine if all the food that you have ordered is ready when they call your number. Its really disruptive to get up multiple times to collect food which they bring out one at a time. So if you want to have a relaxed dinner, dont order more than 1-2 items.. It's a good place for a quick eat out. I visited twice and had samosa chat (twice), chole batoora, and tea. Samosa chat and Tea were very good. Chole batoora - batoora was bad (just a bigger poori... didn't have batoora falvor).
