She found this place, I wanted to go to Sticky Rice. We however went here. And here I am a good $30 less in my wallet by going here over any other restaurant in Downtown Racine. No sushi for a Japanese restaurant. Gives you a good idea of whether anything is authentic. Mandatory 20% added to your bill for gratuity means you get awful service where all they do is take your order, drop it off, & fill your water with all ice. They have no incentive to provide good service since the gratuity is already added. Food selection is below average. Prices are what you'd expect in San Francisco but the food is quality of something half the price at a fast food place. Meals do come with Miso Soup (cup is half filled) & a half cup of salad drenched in dressing. $26 for Teriyaki Chicken & Fried Rice. $32 for Salmon Teriyaki & Fried Rice 80% of the menu for dinners are $32 or more. I have been to every place nearby & you can get two dinners for the price of one at Shogun. They have literally 8 waiters & waitresses so they're mostly just standing there doing nothing. Interior is cool but you're paying a premium for the people sitting at the grill area even if you aren't sitting there. The food was maybe just okay. They really skimp out on the chicken meals. Chicken was easily previously frozen chunks. Seems like other reviews are right that the establishment acts very bitter for anybody that doesn't order the $40 or higher meal. My wife got Salmon & I swear she got more Salmon than I got chicken. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! Been to at least 15 Racine area restaurants & this is the only one I have gone to where it is really bad. We came for a birthday celebration, most of our first time here. Taylor was our main server, who was awesome! We didn't do the hibachi table so we could all sit and talk to each other. We all got something dinner for dinner and even had gyoza and egg rolls as an appetizer- all of us liked our dishes. Salmon was amazing and I recommend! read more

Date of visit: 12/23/21 We found this place after our original place was closed for several days and decided not to update their website and with a hankering for Asian food on our tongues, we decided to give it a try. The drab, dirty outside should have been the first warning. The long wait for someone to seat us and the dingy interior could have been strikes two and three. There was someone at the front, on the phone, who looked at us several times, but made no attempt to signal to us that they would be with us when they could, which made me wonder if we were supposed to seat ourselves. Eventually someone came and sat us but immediately asked for our orders. We needed a minute as this was our first time here and that minute stretched out for quite some time. There were many similar stretches of time during the meal, though I do understand that they were likely short-staffed. We both had the teriyaki chicken, which was a mixed bag. The chicken was dry, as though it had been cooked earlier and reheated, or took up a summer residence under the heat lamps before being ready for plating. The veggies were blah as well. But the teriyaki sauce was quite good, as was the rice--just had to pick around the giant onions. While so-so, all-around, the biggest issue was that something I ate did NOT agree with me and I had some ill effects that thankfully did not linger and ruin my Christmas! read more

Exercise caution at a place where the last review is over a year old. Update- they don't have sushi though that's never been taken off their website, they don't answer the phone for anything (phone message says it's because they don't take reservations, which they don't) and they don't have salads with your entree (at least not for our group that came in at 7:30 on a Friday night) OR the traditional hibachi sauces, or anyone to carry on the traditional picture for a birthday celebration. I could go on but I don't want anyone to lose interest and risk going there... if you can manage to get service (servers attention, drink refills, anything) then prepare to abandon your manners because you'll have to flag one down from their friend group at the bar. read more

Was not a very pleasant first time experience in this restaurant. From the jump of walking in hostess began to tell us we can't sit together at a table as five but we have to pay together n two of us go eat at another table which seemed discriminating . Then continues to have a cocky attitude about the restaurants food and say if we don't get up to go to another table we are not allowed to eat. Hostess with short Justin bieber haircut and beenie ruined the whole restaurant's vibe and we did not eat and refuse to pay money at a place with that kind of attitude. 0/10 would not recommend they overcharge for big parties and don't have any respect for customers. Service is awful. Servers don't care if you have a party of 5 or more because they are getting a 20% tip regardless. So they won't be back to refill your drinks, get you a new drink or basically be back at all once the chef appears until they hand you your check. I got there at 6:30 with a party of 6 on a Tuesday. We sat at 7 and I noticed that there were still two big parties that didn't have food yet. I needed to be out of there by 8:15. I went up to the waitress/bartender and asked how many chefs they had because I was on a time limit (annoying, I know, but they are usually fairly quick once you sit). She starts walking away as I'm literally talking to her and she says, "well we close at 8 so that won't be a problem". I've worked in the industry for over a decade and I can tell you that it was for sure going to be a problem because they only had two chefs that still had to cook for other tables and then come and prepare ours. I was absolutely right. Chef didn't come to our table until 8 and didn't get out of there until 8:50. Bad experience from the jump. The 2 stars are for the chef, whose personality was better than the waitress (Mia), but mediocre at best. read more

It had been a really long time since we'd had a hibachi dinner. Usually when we go to a Japanese restaurant with a hibachi grill we end up getting sushi instead. This time, though, we did the hibachi with family... and also tried some of the sushi. Both were great! Started with a couple of pieces of nigiri, which were very good, and a roll called "Don't Cry Baby". My wife said the roll alone was worth making another trip! It had spicy tuna, cream cheese and cucumber inside with strips of tuna, avocado, and jalapenos on top with a spicy sauce. Wow! It definitely had some heat, but the balance of flavors was fantastic. For the hibachi, we each had the beef filet and I had calamari as well. Everything (including the vegetables and rice that everything came with) was well-seasoned and perfectly cooked by our hibachi chef Luis. Drinks were good. Soup and salad to start the dinner off were both good. Really top notch. We'll definitely be back. read more

Reading through these other reviews I am shocked at how many people give this place low ratings. Besides the fact that the servers do seem to need a little help once in a while and are on the slower side especially when the place is busier, I have never had a problem with the food here! We love the sushi rolls and hibachi here. For dinner the hibachi is a little more on the expensive side but it is very good and I love the horseradish sauce they serve on the side. Our favorite sushi rolls are the captain spicy and volcano tuna. When it gets busier the bar gets backed up to but the food quality is good to us. A bunch of us get together and go here all of the time. A little suggestion is letting a large group seat before all of the group is there because then the waitress can at least get started on drink orders so the bar doesn't get backed up and then you are waiting for what seems like a long time for drinks and clears out some space in the waiting area. read more

Unfortunately we had a big group of 15 people so we all couldn't be seated at the actual grill but they did give us 2 tables behind the grill with our group where we could see just fine. In a family that is divided between sushi and cooked fish, this is a perfect restaurant for all of us. Usually only one half is satisfied. Tonight, we all walked away full and happy! Service was spot on, the person grilling was engaging and entertaining, the food was worth repeating. Our son was celebrating his birthday and they did a quick song and acknowledged it with a slice of cantaloupe (perfect dessert following this meal). We are frequent patrons of Shogun and we always have delicious food and great service. We always get a few signature rolls, (Crunchy Salmon is my favorite) but all of the ones we have tried are really good. Their fried rice is on point! And unique, it just has such great flavor. Went to Shogun last night for sushi. My husband warned me it wasn't great, but I didn't feel like driving to Koi in Milwaukee or Lotus in Oak Creek. We were seated and it took about 10 minutes just for someone to ask us what we wanted for drinks. I could understand if it was a busy Friday night... the whole place had maybe 4 groups. We finally order our rolls about 25 minutes after we arrive. I ordered a Chicken Teriyaki Roll, a CA Roll with spicy sauce, and a Popeye roll. Food took about a 20 minutes to a half hour to arrive, and when it did, my California roll didn't have any spicy mayo, so my husband had to flag down the waitress who was nice enough to bring us a dish of it. My chicken teriyaki roll was chewy and fatty, overly sweet. I had one piece and my husband had one, didn't touch the rest. The CA Roll used crab stick and didn't state it, so it wasn't very good, just cheaply made. The Popeye roll was fine, nothing to write home about. My Husband ordered 3 rolls as well, none were great and he found a hair in one about halfway through. We left grossed out, with empty bellies, and empty wallets. Won't be back. read more

I called for a reservation, knowing my boyfriend was working late. They refused to take reservation, saying they don't accept reservations. I told them we'd be in at 7:30PM; they said no problem. We get to restaurant at 7:30 and are refused service saying they aren't taking anymore tables for the night and they are closing. We ordered 2 Philadelphia rolls, 2 rolls w/ avocado & cucumber and edamame. My edamame was super dried out and the beans were little to none. The Philadelphia rolls had barely a sliver of salmon in them and my avocado cucumber rolls somehow had wasabi on each piece. Don't waste your time, make the drive to Honada in Kenosha. Now this place isn't even worth walking into! I have ate here before and never experience what I did today. Yes it has been a couple of years since I been, but guess what I'll never go back! I walked in this place and instantly it has a stench that makes it hard to want to eat here. But because I'm with a group and I have ate here before and the food was good. I decided to stay and order rice and shrimp. The rice was very gummy (over cooked) and the shrimp tasted fishy (old). I sent my plate back and said it was nasty. The owner Shaun says I still have to pay because it left the kitchen. So I ask this nice young man Moe if I could speak with owner. Shaun walks out with an attitude and says nothing is wrong with his food and I just don't like it. So than I go into explain why it was nasty and Shaun gets sassy with me and say you still gonna pay for it. That's fine but I will be doing a review and won't be back. My experience at shogun was phenomenal! Our waitress was nice and loud which in a place like this I appreciated! My family and I had the teriaca I chicken fried rice and also appetizers my husband had tuna and salmon sushi which that was a first for us and it was phenomenal my father and stepmother had pork Egg rolls and they swore by those. I had the chicken steamed dumplings and they were out of this world FAVORFUL! I ordered a beautiful strong mai tai and our friendly family we were sat next to bought my family sake bombs! Our habachi chef luis was absolutely fantastic! Super nice, very entertaining AND CLEARLY great at his job! and we also had a great side conversation! He was awesome! Delicious food but no yum yum sauce was extremely disappointing. The chef even said he has multiple people a night ask for it a night. Like why the heck wouldn't they have it. This will keep us from coming back for sure. We are sauce people in general and not having a classic hibachi yum yum sauce is just not okay. We took most our food home so we can buy some yum yum sauce and eat it the way we know it. We came from Washington where we have an amazing range of Asian cuisine and Japanese steakhouse hibachi grills all over. read more

My favorite Hibachi grill, is in Vernon Hills but I just moved to Mount Pleasant and the great thing is that they have its own piece of heaven 12 minutes away from my new house. This past July for my birthday I went to Shogun for the first time the entire experience was phenomenal. From the friendly and fast service, to the amazing personality of the chef. The goto. It's not the best sushi in SEWI. But it's real good. They know me, cuz I've been here just a couple of times (wink). They do really solid sushi, and with 5 large hibachi tables, they have you covered. I'm not a hibachi kinda guy, so I stick to the sushi, or more specifically: sashimi. I get the deluxe all the time, which is great, because they usually SLAM it with salmon, and it's usually got some squid & octopus, so I'm in heaven. Chirashi is another good sashimi choice. The maki are varied and plentiful. Yam yam nori, spider, spicy mango, dragon, volcano, unagi... Great great great- all great. Some rare highlights are the asparagus beef maki & the firecracker. The 1st is nothing like Japanese and nothing like traditional maki, but it's awesome & perfect for sushi-ninnies. The 2nd, depending on the day, will rip your face off. The grilled rice exterior is a great little pop of crunch, before the pop of serano pepper. Apps, drinks, maki, hibachi, sashimi and Seven Samurai in a never-ending loop on the screen - what more can you ask for? read more

I was looking through restaurants and saw I've never reviewed shogun on Yelp. My husband and I love this place, great sushi drinks and service. We've probably been here a dozen or more times over the last 4 or 5 years. I think we had like one negative incident here where we were getting hibachi and the chefs lighter blew up and flew into people's food and he just kept going. That's it though, we've sat at the hibachi tables like 5 or 6 times and sushi probably about a dozen now that I think about it. Not great. They scrambled up our order. The food tastes sub par. The service was friendly and prompt. But the rest was very underwhelming.

We decided to go with sushi vs the hibachi and was not pleasantly happy or disappointed. It was very average. It was $5 a drink during what we consider happy hour, so thought it was more expensive than normal. We got asked if we wanted salad or soup- which most restaurants have that included in sushi. It was only $1.50 each, so I got the salad and my boyfriend for the soup. It was good; we each got two rolls which were great. The hibachi crew looked entertaining.
