Really struggling between 1 and 2 stars... Service was pretty great. All teppan tables were fully booked, but the dining and bar areas were open. We sat at the bar and were taken great care of by Tony! I asked for kizami (fresh Wasabi) and he knew exactly what I was talking about and made it happen. Bar seating is a wind tunnel. Every time the front door opens, which is constant, things get cold and windy. There was a steady rotation of women coming and going as the wind was too much. Food quality... Oh boy. Not good. The wrong dish was brought. I ordered ribeye and chicken and not only did it not have any chicken, it was New York steak. Then when the correct dish, I hoped, was brought, there were no appetizer shrimp and the steak was cooked well done. A far, far cry from RARE. Tony had been so great running back and forth from the kitchen, there was no point in saying anything more. It's the kitchen that has the issues, not Tony. Service staff can only do so much! Really hope they get quality under control bc if the "house" isn't in order, they'll lose their excellent waitstaff. Get it together in the kitchen! Absolutely, will NOT, return here. First time here. I came for my birthday. They decorate this small amazing plate that reads "happy birthday" and the little small cake with ice cream that they give you is super delicious!! Also, for food, i had Filet Mignon with Colossal Shrimp and wow super amazingly delicious. It came with chicken fried rice, soup, salad, and noodles and it was very amazing! Rigo was our cook and he was amazing! I have been to Benihanas before but Rigo made the experience so much better than Benihanas. Rigo has so much skill and his name tag that was digital. He asked me what we were celebrating and asked for my name and his digital name tag was changed to "happy birthday Michael" that really was amazing. It made the day more special than it already was. Note: not everyone has this digital name tag because he said his mom purchased this for him to wear to work and I thank his mom for adding something that stands out more than the rest of the cooks. Comparing Shogun to Benihanas, i will confess that Shogun had more flavor to their food and the wait times aren't that long. In order to have a cook cook in front of you, you have to make sure to make reservations ahead of time because then you won't have this amazing performance. I also had these garlic fries and that was also very good and i recommend that as an appetizer. Horrible cook! Went to dinner an our cook made a lot of mistakes. My husband order the $40 dlls rib-eye and chicken an they gave him 4 small pieces of chicken an the rib had ALOT of FAT!!! My granddaughter order Teriyaki steak an it had more fat than meat! He took forever to cook the vegetables, that by that time my meat was cold. They forgot our steam rice. AND when he would talk you couldn't hear him. It was like he was whispering. An to top it off the people that were sitting with us he got their order wrong. I had NEVER experienced something like this at a hibachi, especially Shogun! Shogun is suppose to be the top notch next to Benihana. Shogun needs to get better cooks. If I could actually give this restaurant negative stars I would; I had a terrible dining experience here to say the least. I visited (Corona Location on 6/5) with a large party celebrating a friends birthday, service was slow, food was sub-par, waitress had no table side manor, screwed up every order and returned 30 minutes later with my cocktail that had a gnat floating in it. Although the manager addressed my issue, service did not improve thereafter; hungry guest were surprised to learn that both the bar and kitchen had closed with no notice or advisory; some whimsical story about the chef being injured.... Several of us left both hungry, underwhelmed and offended. We frequent this restaurant since it's the best Teppanyaki around here. We had a great time at this place. The food was outstanding and the people at good table were good company. You never know whom u'll be sitting next to. Our chef was fun and entertaining he focused on cooking however he made time to invoke us also. Funny and witty. We ordered the Filet Mignon Sumo size (just a bigger cut) with veggies and fried rice. I love the garlic butter here, so I always tell our chef to add extra. My breath probably stinks afterwards however I really don't care. It's all @ eating good food. We also had Carnival Roll and Veggie Roll along with our Miso soup appetizers. Minus one star for the time being. Service isn't the same with takeout mostly because the flavors are just not the same, compared to when the teppan chef prepares and cooks the items on the grill. Tonight I had to make sure they at least made my fried rice on the teppan. Even if they didn't cook the lobster, shrimp, and filet on the grill, I'd be okay if the fried rice still had their signature grill flavors. I have had to grab takeout from here on a few occasions since the pandemic, but to my surprise they were open tonight. I wish I'd known sooner to make reservations. Not a problem, I knew I could still enjoy my meal taking it home. I've settled with their bland fried rice on previous occasions, but since they had working teppan chefs this evening, I made sure to specifically request my fried rice to be cooked on one of those grills. I insisted on this as patiently as I could in hopes they'd be able to accommodate me. I'd settled before, but I just couldn't settle on the bland rice again this time. I understand, it's a busy night, and I expected a wait. Not a problem. However, after being told one hour, to arrive and still wait another hour, only to find my meal has NOT been cooked on a Teppanyaki grill as requested, it was a little frustrating. The kicker, the hostess and gentleman who I believe may have been one of the managers, insisted it was cooked on the Teppanyaki grill and that I don't get onions or other ingredients in the fried rice that I had in my takeout bag. Begrudgingly, I left the restaurant to my car. Still dubious- I had to taste the rice. After a taste, I was even more frustrated. It was not teppan grilled fried rice. It was so bland. No onions, carrots, no sesame seeds, no garlic butter to name a few of the grill ingredients. Then, my guy turned around and went back into the restaurant for me. After we paid the same price AND STILL TIPPED STAFF their 15-20% gratuity on takeout, we felt we should still get at least what we ordered. This meant a lot to me. Since Mother's Day plans fell through, this dinner was not going to disappoint. Longer story short, if you don't mind bland flavors, go for takeout; but if you love the grill flavors that dining in gives you, you have to request the grill fried rice!! It is strange to me that their takeout flavors declines so drastically. I don't mind it as I can usually doctor it up when I get home and reheat on the stove with a side of their garlic butter I usually request on the side, but their fried rice is a unique recipe and one I can't replicate. Thank you to their staff this evening for being patient with us and finally making the Teppanyaki fried rice happen. Had a few major issues with this place and none being the food. 3 stars or more for good quality food. 2 stars for poor service. 1/2 star for terrible management for low employee moral and 0 star for Owners greed and tacking on extra fee's. On Saturday the 12th of October around 2pm, 12 of my closest family and friends joined together to celebrate my mom's birthday. We congregated in the bar deciding to grab a drink while we wait for our table. My mom had brought in a small single bottle (single bottle of the 4 packs you can get at the store) just in case the bar didn't serve her favorite and only brand of wine she'll drink. She asked the bartender if she would pour in glass for her and that she'll pay the difference of a similar glass of wine that they do offer. The bartender refused unless my mom paid the $25 corkage fee. I thought she was joking at first. Me being a bartender/ server at a few fine dining establishments currently and in the past, I know that this fee is really only enforced in this manner by greedy owners who don't trust their staff to make ethical and wise decisions on their own. Dining room and a full size bottle-yes corkage fee. Small mini bottle in bar before being seated- no corkage, Seems fair to me. idk maybe I'm just used to working for employers with class. Anyway, that set the tone for what came next. Our hibachi chef was nice but acted oddly distant and stiff. Not the usual fun loving, shrimp tossing in the mouth, energetic chef. He acted like an abused animal, almost afraid to smile. Again, I blame management for this. We got through the meal finally and was met with our bill dropped with no explanation. We see a service charge of $!00. naturally we assume this was gratuity added for our party 12. My mom decided to add cash as well that so with service charge (minus sales tax) the server walks with over 25%. So we thought. We were literally out the door when we were followed out to the parking lot by server asking if that is all the tip we were going to give. How tacky and rude. But I can't even be rude back because just then did I realize that the service fee wasn't going towards the employee's tip . (Owner greed looks to be the root of these issues. Sadly this place has gone downhill a bit. Such a shame because there aren't a lot of options when it comes to Teppanyaki. Let's start with the girls that greet you when you arrive...I'm using the word greet very loosely - pissy attitudes to say the least. This is who you have representing your business? The first person customers come in contact with...Strike 1! Our chef - using that term very loosely as well seemed as though he hated to perform and forced himself through it. Food was ok, chicken was over cooked, and rice was served last...so the entree was almost entirely eaten before we even got the fried rice...and if you would've waited for the rice - the food would be completely cold. Lackluster for sure...and that is Strike 2. I'm giving Strike 3 to the cost, and while we know that when you go to a place like this you pay extra, would be totally fine but once you figure in horrible hostess's, a boring chef and lackluster food...I don't know that I would go back considering. I have been going here for years and unfortunately although the service is decent and the atmosphere is the same the food has gone downhill. Me and everyone else in my party almost always gets diarrhea after eating here. Every. Single. Time. The food tastes great when we're eating it but I don't know if the meat sits out for a long time or maybe the veggies are not washed very well? I don't know. The location was kinda hard to find for a first timer who has never been to this shopping center before. The entrance to the shopping center is difficult but not impossible to find with gps. My cook spoke Spanish which was a plus. The cook made great conversation with my family. We all got the steak yakisoba and an order of fried rice. We loved the steak. Expensive. Poorly Run. Mediocre Food. I'm still flabbergasted that I spent $100 on ONE PERSON last night. Highlights: Their POS was supposedly "down" and they could only accept cash. I call BS as I saw CCs being used. If the POS was down, HAVE A BACKUP! Teppanyaki, Nigori, and a crispy rice appetizer was $96 WTF... The salad was mostly iceberg covered in ginger dressing. The "miso soup" was insanely salty. I love salt, but I swear my blood pressure went up after a couple of spoonfuls. Even the replacement was still salty as can be with very little flavor. The "chef" had no clue how to cook Teppanyaki. The egg for my fried rice had black bits within 30 seconds of cooking and was over cooked on top of that. The rice was simultaneously dry and excessively oily with very little flavor. And my medium-rare steak was the LAST pulled from the grill. Everyone else got medium, I got medium-well. WTF. Our server was nice, but annoying. He tried telling us we'd have to wait an hour for a chef if we didn't hurry up and pre-order for the member of our group who went to get cash. Service was AWFUL. Reservations was for 7 pm, checked in 10 mins till 7pm. Hostess said she would get our table ready. We waited 20 mins past our reservation time , three parties sat before we did. No communication from hostesses about wait times. Just horrible experience from the beginning. Finally get seated 25 mins after reservation time. Waited another 15 mins for server to finally acknowledge us ( I had to initiate the contact with server ). The chef , Nelson , was great and redeemed the negative experience I had in the beginning. But the food wasn't that great for me to go back for a second time. I witnessed him yelling and making one of the hostesses cry which was very sad. To embarrass an employee like that in front of guests and not take the conversations elsewhere was very demeaning. Mellanie was sweet to my kiddo she noticed my kiddo came from ballet class and even asked her about it and offered coloring page with crayons as soon we were getting seated. This place is amazing! My friend and I came in for lunch around 1pm on a Saturday. It was busy but we were still seated within 5 minutes. Our waitress Natalie was absolutely amazing, she was attentive and quick to refill our drinks. She also took great care to note down all of my allergies and help me pick the safest food options and checking with the kitchen to make sure my allergens weren't in any of the sauces or soups. I ordered their teriyaki chicken lunch option. Our cook was absolutely incredible l, hernan I believe was his name. He made sure that my food didn't include any of my allergens as he cooked. He made my rice and noodles before adding the carrots to the rest of the tables food. The quality and fast of the food was incredible to say the least! All in all amazing experience! Shoutout to Javier!!!!! Javier was our amazing cook tonight for valentines day. He kept everyone in the table laughing and engaging with everyone. I had told him I was allergic to shrimp, and he was extra careful. He even went as far to make sure I didn't order any shrimp sushi rolls. Our waiter tonight was Sarah (had blond hair and was pretty tall) At first we were upset with our service because one of the couples next to us was very favored. It seemed as if this couple used to come in very often to get drunk. Another thing we were skeptical about was our sushi rolls because the favored couple took the rainbow roll before we did. It had taken a little longer than usual for the sushi roll to come in so we spoke up about it. The server was aware herself that it was taking a little too long and took the roll off our bill. For the rest of the night, she had frequently checked up on us as she noticed we were annoyed of the favored couple. One thing we will say about the favored couple (The mans name was Frankie) and Sarah was that they had a little vape pen exchange. Super unprofessional and it made us pretty uncomfortable.
