I'm going to have to say I'm actually a bit disappointed with my first experience here. My boyfriend has been wanting to take me for so long because he and his family have been coming here for years. I knew how much he wanted me to enjoy it, so I really wish my experience had been better, but unfortunately, it wasn't. We arrived around 1:30 p.m. and were seated right away at the teppanyaki table. We were the first guests there and asked the host if we could sit toward the center of the table. We were told we couldn't because the server needed to pick up the plates first, which was fine. However, while we waited, two more guests came in and were seated at the opposite end, and then another couple arrived and was seated right in the center where we had originally asked to sit. That honestly didn't make much sense to me. If we were the first guests there and the seats were available, I don't understand why our preference couldn't have been accommodated. We then sat for about 20 minutes before anyone approached us. Because of where we had been seated, the waitress eventually took everyone's orders from left to right, which meant we ordered last despite arriving first. I didn't make a big deal about it because the other guests at the table were really nice and I genuinely enjoyed their company. Ironically, one of the ladies sitting across from us had actually done body work on my cars in Pasadena in the past! We recognized each other and she was excited to see me, so that was a really nice surprise. Our chef was also great, friendly, funny, and had a really good personality. I can definitely see how this place could normally be a fun experience. Unfortunately, the service itself was just very slow. Our waitress appeared to be handling the restaurant by herself, so I understand she had a lot on her plate, but everything took a long time. The calamari was especially disappointing. It arrived extremely crispy and overcooked, yet somehow cold. We sent it back, and the replacement took so long that I was actually about to cancel it when it finally came out with our main food. The second batch was extremely rubbery and wasn't enjoyable either, so I ultimately had it removed. As for the teppanyaki, the food was okay overall. The filet was pretty decent quality, the scallops were decent, and everything else was just okay. Nothing was terrible, but nothing really stood out enough to make up for the rest of the experience. We arrived at 1:30 and left around 3:00, and with all of the waiting, I really only ate during roughly the last 10 minutes before boxing the rest of my food to take home. My boyfriend still loves this place, and I know he genuinely wanted to show me somewhere he and his family have enjoyed for years, which is probably why I feel a little bad that my first experience wasn't the same. I don't know that I'd be rushing back anytime soon, but I also wouldn't completely write them off. Maybe an evening visit with more staff and a better seating experience would give me a very different impression.

My family and I have been coming here for over 10 years, so it was disappointing to have such a poor experience while celebrating my daughter's graduation. The evening started off great. Our chef was fantastic, and we enjoyed our meal. Unfortunately, things went downhill when it was time to pay. After paying, my husband noticed we had been charged for several items that were never ordered or served to our table, including lobster and alcoholic drinks. When he brought the error to our server, Kitty, there was no apology and very little effort to explain or resolve the situation. He requested the charge be corrected and asked for proof that the incorrect transaction had been voided. Instead, we were left waiting, repeatedly asking for an itemized receipt and a manager. At one point, he discovered a 20% tip had been selected. We were also told they didn't know where the manager was . Kitty did not handle this situation correctly or apologetically. Mistakes happen, but how they're handled matters. Being overcharged is frustrating enough; dealing with a lack of communication, accountability, and professionalism made it even worse. It's unfortunate because we've been loyal customers for many years, but this experience left a bad impression. We will not return.

I worked in Pasadena for 20 years and Shogun is a pioneer to me and my co-workers. Got laid off in 2017 and haven't been here since then. I went to eat with my nephew and a dear friend in the last two weeks, food, service and ambiance are great! Love everything here. No regrets at all!

The food was amazing! Everyone was very attentive and friendly. Our server Stephanie took care of us and the manager Ian made sure we had a good experience. We came to celebrate my aunts birthday and we had a wonderful dinner. I am leaving full and satisfied thank you Shogun Pasadena

(more like 3.8 stars) very fun place for a special occasion! get a performance and solid food. I always love the fried rice at teppanyaki places and we got to try their noodles (a new dish they are trying out). The shrimp and chicken were a little overcooked but flavorful. I also loved the veggies. Our waitress was nice but got a lot of our drinks wrong. Loved our chef though! He said he has been here since 2007, he put on a fun show for us. Overall a great place for a special occasion and fun for a bigger group.

Was excited to eat here for my bday! Always fun to watch the show they put on. Their fried rice is just amazing!!! The food is great as usual. I got a cool hat and they sang for me and provided a slice of cake. The service was good too. Friendly staff. We definitely be going back. Thank you.

I've been coming to Shogun since I moved to Los Angeles some 29 years ago. While it's normal for some things to change over time, quality, quantity, and value should not be among them. I rarely give bad reviews -- sometimes if I'm disappointed, I simply choose not to say anything at all. But after coming here for nearly three decades, I felt compelled to be honest about my experience. I also want to say that the wait staff has remained one of the best parts of this restaurant over the years. Many of the same familiar faces are still there, and they've always been lovely, attentive, and a pleasure. The atmosphere and service are still warm and welcoming, which makes this even more disappointing. I'm not sure what the new owner has in mind, but keeping loyal, long-time customers should be a top priority. I came in expecting the same quality and portions I've enjoyed for years and was highly disappointed when my crispy rice arrived at literally half the size it used to be, yet priced exactly the same. Honestly, I would rather see prices go up a dollar or two because of rising food costs than feel like I'm being served half the food for the same money. That's just not good business. To be fair, after I spoke with the manager, he did try to make it right, and I appreciated that. But the bigger question is, what happens the next time I come in? Will it be the same disappointment again? Or will there simply not be a next time? Loyal customers have supported this restaurant through its ups and downs over the years. In today's economy, people are being very selective about where they spend their money. The question is, do you want customers spending it here, or eventually choosing to go somewhere else where the quality, portions, and value have not declined so drastically?

Their lunch combo is actually really good deal. The filet mignon and scallops come with fried noodles, vegetable, and soup, and it's only a little over $32. We upgraded to chicken fried rice for an extra $4.50, which I thought was still reasonable. We went on Mother's Day, so the restaurant was extremely busy. Luckily, we had made a reservation because the whole restaurant was packed. The service was actually pretty good, and the stuff was friendly and efficient. The only downside was the ventilation. There was quite a bit of smoke inside the restaurant, and the music was a little too loud for me. The food itself was pretty average and not especially impressive, but considering the price, I think it's still a very reasonable option with good value.

Great service here at the Pasadena Location! Stephanie & the Manager Ian was super attentive and fast! Very pleased with their service & i will definitely be coming back!

    Deliciousness!

I have been coming here since I was 16 years old and nothing has changed but only gotten better. The food is absolutely delicious and is the original authentic Japanese? I come here with all my family and friends for every birthday and graduation and we love coming to Shogun.

Been dining here for years. They always revamp the menu and prices which is great. They have a happy hour every day for fantastic prices. Service this time was not good our waiter was not attentive and messed up our orders. Cool vibes and nice big windows to get sunlight inside.

First was through their traditional (phased-out) Chef's Table Loyalty program--$30 off after an initial $30 spend (weekday dinner only, not including alcohol). Second was through their new Friends with Benefits Loyalty program--$50 off (no specifics on dinner or alcohol). Benihana is now part of The One Group that includes other restaurants like STK and Kona Grill where you can also earn points/rewards. I've seen the Benihana teppanyaki "show", and once is enough. It's best enjoyed with a group large enough to fill up an entire table, otherwise you are grouped with others. And the wait for a chef can be long depending on how many are working at that time and the number of tables occupied. Benihana food is mediocre at best, far from authentic, and quite pricey for what you get--without the BD offer, there is no value, although they do have some specials and a Happy Hour menu. For the past few years, we've avoided the teppanyaki tables and go to the sushi bar/lounge, which has bar seating and high and low-top tables. Here's where you can do Happy Hour, Lounge menu, or the regular menu without the show and less of a wait. I noticed in the interim between my 2 visits, the menu prices increased! The Happy Hour menu is not included with the BD offer, so I usually order sushi/sashimi. This year I tried a few noodle dishes. Although there is a sushi bar, I don't think it has traditional seating nor a dedicated sushi chef. Frankly, when I've ordered sushi/sashimi in the past, it was pretty much like supermarket sushi, often haphazardly cut, as if a butter knife was used. I ordered the Spicy Crispy Rice app both visits--6 pieces of crispy rice topped with tuna, yellowtail and salmon and jalapeno slices. The fish are indistinguishable from each other, the black pepper soy sauce cloying, and some of the rice crisped to burnt. I did two noodle dishes--shrimp yakisoba and seafood diablo (scallops, calamari and shrimp with udon in a spicy sauce). Both came with onion soup, salad, steamed rice and sauteed veggies (zucchini and onions). The shrimp yakisoba was decent, although the shrimp were smallish and probably frozen. I asked for less spice on the seafood diablo, but it still packed a punch. The shrimp were the same, the scallops were quartered but tasted like scallops. The calamari, however, were large hacked-up pieces with a texture like a faux seafood item a vegan would order (texturized vegetable protein). There were no tentacle pieces. There were a lot of yellow bell peppers plus some mushrooms and frozen corn. I do like the Benihana Lemonades, available in 4 flavours, refills included. Overall a slightly better and less depressing experience compared to years past. A HUGE shout out to my server for both visits, Alaast, who is actually one of Benihana's supervisors. She was also the hostess my second time, and the bartender and lounge server both times, and seemingly a back waiter at the teppanyaki tables as needed. Service in the lounge in the past has ranged from meh to non-existent, so Alaast is a great asset. I may try Happy Hour here one day, although it's hard to beat the HH at Cheesecake Factory next door.

Since I…read moreheard that one closed down permanently and I was in Monrovia, I found location 5 minutes away from the hotel that I was staying at and decided to go there. The timing was perfect. A friend of mine, Laura and her husband Ternaded lived closeby. Arcadia, to be exact. We met up there and got a very nice welcome from the host by the name of Leilani. She took us to the grill where they make Teppanyaki food. It's very similar to Benihana style. We were seated with another wonderful family and enjoyed our time together. Got to know each other and had a nice conversation. I ordered their Cut Spicy Tuna Roll, (15.25), Tokyo Imperial (52.50), which came with Miso Soup, Salad with their yummy ginger dressing, Shrimp, healthy sautéed vegetables and Filet Mignon. Asked for medium-rare, and Chicken Fried Rice (5.00), I don't know why they charge for the rice? I also got one of my favorite cocktails..Piña Colada (11.00). William was our server along with Linda. They were both kind and sweet. Our chef Luis made all of us a PERFECT MEAL! He was a bit quiet, but did a FANTASTIC JOB! Place was kind of empty for a Saturday night. The reason for that is that they close at 9pm. They also have a lunch menu. Since we got there at 8pm, we were being a bit rushed. Not their fault, rules are rules and we need to follow them. Everything tasted above and beyond everybody's expectations! Fresh and delicious. Thank you Tokyo Wako and staff. Will definitely return when I am in the area!!!!!

We made dinner reservations same day on a Wednesday and arrived at 6pm. There was live jazz music playing in the bar to the left of the restaurant which set a nice romantic lively mood for the evening. There was a slight wait before the hostess escorted us to our table in a dimly lit room. Vibe was romantic, polished, and relaxed. Since it was my birthday, the hostess gifted me a "Happy Birthday" card with a thoughtful message inside. (Because we were celebrating my birthday, we received a free cheesecake dessert and pina colada cotton candy towards end of our meal -- it was spectacular). Eventually our gracious server Steven, arrived and introduced himself and provided us our dinner and drinks menu. Their drink menu was extensive and had a wide selection of wines and cocktails. One of my favorite parts of experience was the "Omakase" customized drink option (I'd come back just for that experience alone). My husband requested for a smoky, spicy cocktail with Tequila and what the server brought back to us was indescribably delicious. We can tell the mixologist who made our drink was a master at her craft. 10/10 recommend. For the food portion, we both selected the 4 course DineLA customized menu and got one of each item on the menu so we can try everything. We loved the Japanese fusion of flavors. I especially enjoyed the Appetizer Hamachi shots and Crispy Shrimp Amaebi. It had a refreshing balance of flavors that were good teasers for the next dish on menu, which was the Wedge salad (loved) and Beef Tataki (it was okay). Then came the main entree, which we both got the Filet mignon, which was a good standard steak at a fine dining steakhouse. I was slightly surprised the steak did not have any Japanese flavor notes since it's a Japanese fusion steakhouse. Nonetheless, that did not take away from our pleasant experience. Next time, I'd probably opt for a ribeye or tomahawk. Last but not least, the dessert finally came. We felt VERY spoiled because not only did we have the incredible flourless chocolate cake (my favorite) and mango sorbet (refreshing), we also got a cheesecake and cotton candy, which we were able to take home to enjoy later. We were beyond satisfied by end of our meal and would definitely consider coming back again. Thank you Alexander's Steakhouse for a great experience!

The greeter and server were very welcoming. I love how cozy the table is set up. I love a very thoughtful gesture when I saw a happy anniversary card waiting at our table. The menu has a variety of choices. We ordered the filet mignon and paired with a glass of Cabernet, the cod chioppino in lobster broth and paired with a glass of Pinot Grigio. For sides, we ordered the mushroom medley and Korean roasted cauliflower. The food is so perfectly prepared. For dessert, we ordered the cookie and cream soufflé, a yummy dessert. They also gave us our anniversary desserts which are the yizu cheesecake and the fun cotton candy. We are very pleased with this wonderful dinner celebration. Thank you Alexander's steakhouse.
