We absolutely love coming to Shogun in Pasadena! We use every excuse in the book to celebrate here--whether it's a birthday, anniversary, or just a family dinner. The service is always outstanding, and the food is consistently exceptional and delicious. Ian, the manager, is always welcoming, friendly, and makes a point to check on guests. He's always visible, making sure everything runs smoothly and stepping in to help wherever needed. Every waitress and chef we've had has been amazing, but our absolute favorite will always be Rika! She has been our go-to server for years. She's incredibly attentive, always on top of everything, and has an amazing memory--she knows exactly what our family orders every time we visit. She is also a total sweetheart. That being said, no matter who takes care of you, you're guaranteed outstanding service and genuine hospitality. We have been loyal, regular customers at Shogun for about 10 years, which makes writing this review especially disappointing. When we first started coming, the manager was wonderful. He always greeted us and made a point of checking in on the tables throughout the restaurant. He genuinely seemed to care about the customers and their experience. We noticed he was no longer there during our last few visits and found out he had moved to another location. We were bummed, but we continued coming because Shogun had been a family favorite for years. Unfortunately, our last two visits have completely changed how we feel about this restaurant. We came the first week of June to celebrate my son's graduation. We brought our two kids, along with our nieces and nephews, several of whom had never been before. We had talked up the experience so much, and the kids were incredibly excited. Instead, the music at our table did not work, and our chef did absolutely nothing besides stand there and cook. No interaction, no entertainment, nothing that makes a teppanyaki dinner feel special. I mentioned to management how disappointing it was, especially since we were there celebrating with five kids. I was told it was because the music was not working. What was frustrating was that they apparently already knew the music at that table was not working and still seated us there. We decided to give Shogun another chance this week for my son's 10th birthday. This time, we specifically asked to be seated where the music worked because we wanted to celebrate him and avoid what happened during our last visit. We were seated, served our soups, salads, and drinks, and then discovered the music at that table did not work either. We had to move to another table with all of our food and drinks. Then the chef arrived and, what do you know, the music stopped working again. We listened to the same 20-second portion of a techno song on repeat for the entire dinner. But the music was not the real problem. We realized it was the same chef we had during our graduation dinner, and unfortunately, I now believe this is simply how he does it. Music or no music, there was almost no effort to make the experience fun or engaging. He did not even do the simple things the kids look forward to, like the heart-shaped rice or the onion train. Meanwhile, the chef at the table next to us was still entertaining and engaging with his guests even without music. The difference was impossible not to notice. We had made it very clear that we were celebrating our son's 10th birthday. We waited after dinner for someone to sing to him, but nothing happened. We had already paid and were just sitting there waiting. My son was getting so tired he was starting to fall asleep at the table. Eventually, I had to get up and find someone to ask if they were going to sing to him. The service was also disappointing. Our server barely came by, and our drinks sat empty for a long time. We did not get refills until after the chef had already finished and left. We did not complain that night because it was our son's birthday, and we did not want to spend his celebration arguing or becoming even more frustrated. But after reading other recent reviews, it seems we are not the only longtime customers who feel Shogun is not what it once was. Ironically, before our graduation dinner in June, a friend told us he had recently gone and had an awful experience with his chef. He encouraged us not to go. We assumed he had just had bad luck, and because our son wanted to celebrate his graduation at Shogun, we went anyway. Unfortunately, we should have listened. The next time our kids ask for teppanyaki, we plan to give Benihana a try. I truly hope we have a better experience there. I would not recommend coming to this Shogun for a birthday, graduation, or special celebration right now. After two disappointing celebrations in a row, we left feeling frustrated instead of happy. I do want to mention that Shogun has one server who is absolutely amazing. If you are a regular, you probably know exactly who she is and how wonderful she is. Unfortunately, we did not have her during either of our last two visits. At this point, she would be the only reason we would consider returning, and only if we could be guaranteed a table in her section. After 10 years of being loyal customers, it is genuinely sad to feel this way about a place our family once loved. read more

My family and I have been coming here for over 10 years, so it was disappointing to have such a poor experience while celebrating my daughter's graduation. The evening started off great. Our chef was fantastic, and we enjoyed our meal. Unfortunately, things went downhill when it was time to pay. After paying, my husband noticed we had been charged for several items that were never ordered or served to our table, including lobster and alcoholic drinks. When he brought the error to our server, Kitty, there was no apology and very little effort to explain or resolve the situation. He requested the charge be corrected and asked for proof that the incorrect transaction had been voided. Instead, we were left waiting, repeatedly asking for an itemized receipt and a manager. At one point, he discovered a 20% tip had been selected. We were also told they didn't know where the manager was . Kitty did not handle this situation correctly or apologetically. Mistakes happen, but how they're handled matters. Being overcharged is frustrating enough; dealing with a lack of communication, accountability, and professionalism made it even worse. It's unfortunate because we've been loyal customers for many years, but this experience left a bad impression. We will not return. read more

I also want to say that the wait staff has remained one of the best parts of this restaurant over the years. Many of the same familiar faces are still there, and they've always been lovely, attentive, and a pleasure. The atmosphere and service are still warm and welcoming, which makes this even more disappointing. I'm not sure what the new owner has in mind, but keeping loyal, long-time customers should be a top priority. I came in expecting the same quality and portions I've enjoyed for years and was highly disappointed when my crispy rice arrived at literally half the size it used to be, yet priced exactly the same. Honestly, I would rather see prices go up a dollar or two because of rising food costs than feel like I'm being served half the food for the same money. That's just not good business. To be fair, after I spoke with the manager, he did try to make it right, and I appreciated that. But the bigger question is, what happens the next time I come in? Will it be the same disappointment again? Or will there simply not be a next time? Loyal customers have supported this restaurant through its ups and downs over the years. I took my Dad for Father's Day and I have to give it a 4 for the experience. Their A/C broke down and was so hot. However, our waiter made the experience enjoyable. We received ice waters immediately. I tried a variety of sushi and he got their filet and shrimp plate. I do have to say, the meat is amazingly tender! We were welcomed and taken care by staff very well. Our chef and server were both very good and had good personalities for this type of place. Food was above average (cooking was good and chef made sure temps were right), the quality may have been able to be better, but most restaurants these days have downgraded a bit and since this was my first time here I have no comparison.
