This place isn't super clean so a big minus for me. As you walk in and look down at the strip of blue dyed water in their fake pond with trash/drink umbrellas floating around you get the impression they are not big on the details to put it mildly. The food was nothing exciting quality or taste wise. This is a run of the mill place with horrible music blasting the whole time. I think they think if they blast crappie muzak and serve a few drinks you all of the sudden have a festive atmosphere. Sadly that is not the case. We wanted to have a nice lunch in a clean Japanese hibachi setting. What we received was mediocre food with a chef who cranked up his blue tooth speaker with The Final Countdown and then added a laser light show which made a few dizzy... and still had the crappy muzak jamming in the background. Most of us had the ribeye with scallops and fried rice. I could see the point of the chef jamming with his music and light show if we were all having drinks and this was a late night event but older folks at lunch time with hot tea? No thanks. I see no reason to return any time soon. I will say they were very attentive to the gluten sensitive person in our party so they get an extra star. read more

Wasn't just our table either. We were sitting at our grill for over an hour before our chef came to the table. We had plenty of time to watch. Also, WARNING! They up-sell everything without telling you, drinks brought in souvenir cups (additional $5 each) that guests did not ask for. And a $21 up sell for chicken in the fried rice. Although she was shy, at the end of the show she was laughing and I know she had one of the best birthdays ever. I went here a couple night's ago. It was just me so I opted to get the Tappan but sit in a booth instead of around the grill. I was self conscious about eating by myself with all those big groups gathered around the volcanos and flying knives. : ) Now granted the last time I went Japanese Tappan it was at a restaurant in Atlanta where I used to live. I ordered the same thing (filet mignon), and although they served the same combination of soup, salad, rice, grilled veggies and steak, the steak portion was quite small compared to the other restaurant. I get that the price was 50% higher than in ATL, but I didn't expect the steak to be 50% less too. I hope to try another Japanese Tappan restaurant for comparison here in SoCal. read more

Our sushi chefs, Raul and Roy provided my family and I with an amazing dining experience this evening especially the food and good conversations! They were quick when completing our items and added special touches to our plates to make our dining experience that much more enjoyable and served for fun topics of conversation. The bar drinks were exceptional as well! Our server, Mirranda was quick when serving us our kitchen items and additional food and beverage needs. Food was good.. service was questionable. My friend and i came here for sushi during happy hour. Things got weird when they told us to close our tabs so they could get their tip. So uncomfortable and we would have probably gotten another roll each and another beer but just decided we would go to another happy hour. My family and I come here frequently, its always a good time with good food. Yesterday was my daughter's 9th bday and she decided on Shogun for dinner. I am writing this review because we were all wowed! Our chef Chris did new tricks that we havent seen other chefs do. He kept our attention the entire time (adults included). My daughters were very impressed with him. Fast forward to today, my littles are still talking about him saying how he deserves 10 stars and such. I have been wanting to check this out forever and finally did tonight. I have been to a couple Teppanyaki places and was hoping a good show for my group of five on this one. Entry - the waiting area was a bit small. The three hostesses were just standing up there talking to each other not doing much. I felt like i was interrupting them when i asked a question. There was a dude with a mic thingy in his ear thinking he was cool making a lame attempt at flirting with the hostesses. I guess he seats people?? I wasnt impressed by the water decoration on the side of the walkway. My husband walks with a cane and it almost went in there not to mention it looked a little rank. Our wait time without a reservation was about 45 minutes in the lobby... One thing...i cannot believe how LOUD it was. I was so bummed. We couldnt hold a conversation as a group without yelling. I couldn't hear our waitress or anything. While our cook was very nice, there wasnt much "show". The meats in my dish were very good. The veggies seemed bland. Our waitress didnt keep up with our drinks either. We ended up ordering a sushi roll because the cook took FOREVER to get to our table. I first when to shogun with my schools drama company. We held all of our Drama Banquets there and amazing hat was when I realized how good the food was. With a birthday dinner I had with my dad, we went there also. Then on my one month with my boyfriend we went there. I think Shogun gives a perfect blend of steak and chicken and sushi. My boyfriend and I aren't huge on eating fish, so eating here was able to guarantee us finding something good. Okay so the issue here was the food being under cooked. My husband and I had dinner here last night for my birthday Pedro was our chief and was amazing very friendly however he must be new . He lost his spatula a couple times so i was a little scared to get hit at some point with one lol he also undercooked our chicken wasn't until after he left we started getting the raw bites. I never tire of Teppan dining. Shogun is a family favorite still. Recently had a small get-together here for a friend's birthday. It is very convenient to make a dinner reservation for a Friday evening. Our table seated the maximum 11 and we sat very comfortably. Our dinner show was fantastic! The onion volcano, the heartbeats, train and light disco,... Only thing missing was the shrimp toss and catch in our mouth for the brave. It didn't take away from a delicious dinner. We enjoyed everything. It's not on the menu, but you can still ask for a dynamite sauce to accompany your shrimp. It's delicious!!! If you don't mind spicy, ask for it and that heat accompanying grilled shrimp is a tasty duo. Excellent service and a wonderful great. read more

The birthday girl wanted teppanyaki for her birthday dinner after an afternoon full of winery hopping, so we found ourselves at Shogun which was a quick 10 mile drive from all the wineries. This place is similar to Benihana; I've seen a good number of Shogun restaurants in SoCal, including San Diego and San Bernardino. It was a Saturday night, so there was quite a wait to be seated at the grill (about 30 minutes). We were seated with another party, and our waitress took all our orders in order to prepare our master griller for the night. A few of us got the usual meat, veggie and fried rice plates, while our vegetarian birthday girl opted for yakisoba and I opted for a poke salad bowl plus a small yakitori beef skewer (I was doing paleo at the time). The yakitori was forgettable, but the poke bowl was super large and full of greens and poke! I was surprised how much food was in that bowl, but poke was not that great, especially as it was drenched in sauce... I was definitely full off that. Our teppanyaki chef came and brought all the food to prepare for our party + neighboring party's meals. He turned on the music (Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars) with his portable speaker. He did all the teppanyaki tricks and entertainment, such as the weird veggie "animals" running around the grill, volcano onion tower, and the fried rice that spelled out "I heart you" (with the actual heart shape). The tricks were overall kinda corny but still fun to see, whether it's your first time or not at a teppanyaki grill. He had a few hiccups with some of his tricks but we didn't really care, plus he was just happy and smiling the whole time. The food was okay overall. There was a lot of butter involved, which kind of made sense with the grill but we couldn't help but see the tub of butter that was involved, and how little was left at the end of the meal. Overall, it was an entertaining dinner. I'm not the biggest fan of the food but I would come back with a fun group to celebrate a birthday or another milestone. read more

If you're looking for a good quality teppan grill I suggest you look elsewhere. First, we were not waited on for a good 15-20 minutes after being seated. The waiter was nice but an air head. He did not know the menu at all and had to constantly go back and forth to check on what was in each menu item. After this back and forth game, we received our appetizer, which was the spicy edamame. It tasted fine until I felt a slimy texture and bitter taste following shortly after. I did not think much of it until my friend pointed out that something coming out of the shell "looked like a caterpillar." TO MY DISGUST, it was a maggot. I immediately lost my appetite and called for the manager. It took the manager over 15 minutes to come to our table. After telling him what had happened, he studied the shell almost trying to find a way to say we had "planted" the maggot. He was very rude and said he would try and give us a discount on our meal. When we received our check we noticed that only the edamame was taken off and we got a very minimal discount on our overall bill. Needless to say, I am very very disappointed with the service and quality of my meal. I will never be returning. It's tough for me to give 1 star, the service either has to be atrocious or the food has to be garbage and in this case the service was awful and I had to wait far, far too long for food as well as the bill (do you NOT want my money?!) I made a reservation over the phone which went well. I showed up 15 minutes early and was still seated well before my reservation time which was great. Unfortunately it took about 45 to 50 minutes for the Chef to even come to our table and you all know you go to a restaurant usually because you're hungry and so 50 minutes just sitting there was not cool. Prior to the Chef coming over our waitress took our order for drinks, food, ect. While in the middle of ordering she promptly cut me off and I was taken a little aback so I started over and she cut me off again. I really didn't know how to react at this point so I asked if I could order and she said "Everythings OK, you don't have to make an issue about it. You're OK." Well, alrighty then... thank's Karen but you may want to work on your customer service. Plus she then screwed up my order and re-asked me everything I already told her three times before, seemingly on purpose. My guest and I each ordered the "Imperial" which isn't cheap at $35 but the steak was low quality and was about 30 to 40% fat which was cut away in front of us (Which is good, since I am not going to eat it but they could have done this in the back and gave me meat instead of fat) leaving us with very little steak. Thankfully Karen left mid-course, I guess she needed to have a bad attitude elsewhere, but we sat there so long after finishing our meal (we finished first so I will be fair and count the time after the other parties were done) that we waited nearly an hour until the bill came out. An older couple that was celebrating their anniversary didn't even get any sort of tambourine shake or anything (it's what they do there) which they seemed to be disappointed by (it was their 57th) because they waited too long and just got up and paid at the front with the hostess which was my queue to get up and do the same but of course our server popped in at that point, finally, with the bill. All in all, I understand waiting for 20 minutes for the Chef but not 45 or 50 and so I spent a good hour and a half extra at this place, along with rude service, than I had to. Shogun, work on your service. You obviously don't read these reviews but it needs work. We went to the bar at 3:45pm today 2/19, there was dirty glasses, dishes all over the bar we sat down right in front of us was a pile of dirty glass, ( wine glasses, beer glasses, shot glasses , plates with people left over food ect) I said to the bar tender " this place is a hot mess" he said yes it is this is due to shift change" I'm trying to get someone to clean it up" A manager Abbie came up she was using the register to complete someone's sale from the food area. Once done she stood and chatted with the bar tender as he was trying to get drinks out. We were sitting at the bar waiting for someone to take our order but she just walked away. Soon after a waitress walk up to the bar, grabbed a dirty shot glass, went behind the bars grabbed a bottle of Perrier water went around to the other side of the bar filled the dirty/ used shot glass with alcohol put a lime on the side and off she went to deliver to some. I asked to speak to a manager, Allie came up say "yes" I told her what I seen she asked if the waitress was Asian or American, I said American. She Allie came back and said word for word, " that shot was not for someone it was for cooking" I said that's still not good and very unsanitary and gross she said I talked to her about it" " then Allie said anything else?" We had dinner reservations for 3 people for 8pm and when we arrived, the hostess told us it would be a few minutes. No worries! When everyone sitting in the lobby got sat before us, I went up to the hostess and asked how much longer. She said there was still 2 parties ahead of us. What's the point of taking reservations if you put us on the same list as walk ins? I waited longer and became very agitated when a party that came in as a walk in AFTER US got sat BEFORE US! By 8:30pm, I got up and asked how much longer. The hostess pulled out her list and there had been parties crossed off that were below us on the waitlist. I was furious and started going off on the hostess. All she could say was "you're next". Apparently, they try to fill each station to full capacity so for odd number parties, they try to wait for another odd number party so there won't be any empty seats in the table. Fortunately, the manager happen to be near the hostess stand and took us to be seated immediately. She also apologized for the inconvenience and offered drinks and an appetizer on the house. I was glad she tried to resolve the issue but still very irritating. I really love the concept of having someone cook dinner for you in a skilled and entertaining kind of way but I feel this place failed to deliver. For the price you're paying (I believe our bill came out to just about $100 for 3 people), you would expect to get a lot more than a few pieces of dry meat and fried rice. I know the main focus of the restaurant is the show the chefs put on while cooking, but would it hurt to provide regular dinner portions and better tasting food? There is a huge problem with their vegetarian menu. They offer vegetarian food, yet they offer their 'onion' or 'miso' soup to start the courses. The onion soup is made with chicken broth and the miso soup is made with fish broth. I ate the miso soup and, after being a vegetarian for two decades, found out what I had eaten. No one seemed to care.... I was offered two salads to compensate. They simply cannot offer these soups under a vegetarian menu. How many people have eaten food at their establishment unknowingly against their moral/religious beliefs? read more
