If I could give this restaurant zero stars, I would. The food was decent, drinks were TERRIBLE, our server was decent, but the horrible service we received from the manager, Charm was the nail on the coffin. I was there celebrating two birthdays with a group of my closest girlfriends. Before our drinks and appetizers even came out we were approached by Charm (the manager) and she asked us to keep our voices down. The whole experience was ruined from the start. Our chef, Santos tried his best to help make it less akward and help come back from the comments she made to our table. During the whole dinner show, she stayed around our area almost like she was babysitting us the whole time. We asked to speak with her towards the end of our dinner again and then she took a while to come back. Won't attempt to come back to this place again. I called in advance to see if they took reservations. The hostess said yes, but for the night they weren't accepting anymore. I asked if they accepted walk-ins and she said yes, but the wait time would be about 30 minutes, which would increase the later we came. We drove over immediately and got there by 6:00pm. The hostess told me it would be a 30 min wait for a party of 3. I was agreeable and they took my name and number and told me they would text me when my table was ready. I went to get boba down the street and came back. I waited outside a bit and didn't know how long it was, so I checked in with the hostess. She asked if I got a text, and I said no. She asked how long I was waiting for, and I said "about 20-25 minutes". She looked at her kiosk thing and told me "you checked in 23 minutes ago. Wait for your text. We're telling people it's about a 45 minute wait now". So I head back outside and wait. At this point it's about 7:30. I check in to see how much longer, and the hostess has the nerve to tell me "maybe about 20 more minutes". I end up leaving because they aren't honest with their estimates at all. I head to Al Toque Peruvian Food about 10 minutes away. They had live music and GREAT food. And wonderful service. You should go there instead. I left the Peruvian restaurant at 9pm and guess what? I still haven't gotten a text from them that my table is ready!! Don't even bother eating here. Just go to Al Toque and get their ceviche, surf and turf rice plate, and rib eye fried rice. Made a reservation for 5pm weekday. Had to wait for the entire party before seating. At least one person should order fried rice to maximize your show. Half the cool entertainment the cook does is tied to the fried rice. Food was timed great. Usually at other teppanyaki places, the food comes on your plate at different times. Well I am going to start off by saying a female worker was wearing a hoodie with two middle fingers flipping off on the back of it which I think is just not classy for a decent class restaurant. That really wasn't a big deal though and this 2/5 review is mainly because the food was not great, prices are high and cleanliness of place. So right as we sat down we noticed the whole table was very sticky and dirty even after she wiped it down. The stove also looked so dirty with left over food crumbs and food build up on it (who knows how long it's been there). I have had a lot of hibachi in my lifetime and this was definitely by far the worst. There was absolutely no flavor to the food, it was so bland. There was no lemon used on any of the shrimp, scallops or lobster which was shocking because that is what gives it flavor. Hardly any butter used too. Everything was so bland even the yum yum sauce. The edamame was super super salty it was hard to eat. I have had a lot of hibachi a lot cheaper than this place that taste amazing so leaving there paying more than most places with it being the worst hibachi I've had was really disappointing. I am also not a picky eater and hardly ever leave bad reviews. I do have to say our chef Sal was very energetic and friendly and put on a good show. He was very great and we enjoyed him even though the food didn't taste that great. Also my boyfriend and I both are now feeling nauseous and like we're gonna throw up. We live around the corner and finally checked out Shogun as I've heard great things. Social distancing was happening and we felt very comfortable. Our waiter was very accommodating with my special pregnancy sushi requests. My husband loves the teppan style shows so he enjoyed himself. Our chef was friendly and made the usual jokes. My husband loved the fried rice and steak and opted for onion soup instead of the usual miso. My garlic edamame and half roll were delicious. The sherbet was also tasty. I had reservations at 6:30 we got sat down and immediately got rushed to order are you ready? Are you ready? Do you know what you want? Do you know what you want? The waitress was super short with us. I get if your busy but this shouldn't take away from the quality service you provide your customers. We had no water and had to keep looking for our waitress to get any service. My girlfriend ordered a drink and it tasted like cherry cough syrup and we couldn't even find the waitress to fix our drink we had to do it ourselves by going up to the bar and asking the bartender. Shogun is like the similar version of Benihanas just much more approachable, kind of like the cute friend but less high maintenance! Haha Soooo good! I can't believe I've never been here but pretty much, looks are deceiving, the outside doesn't make it look that great but as you walk in, there's a few tables to dine at then you get the grill which yup, is just like Benihanas! Haha They have basically the same menu too- grilled chicken, shrimp, steak- you name it, the cooks grill it along with your veggies, soup and rice! Yup, the chefs even do the cute tricks too and I might even say they are even a bit better! Price wise, it's a bit pricey so I say go for lunch which is about half off! Either way, it's definitely worth it and I never leave unsatisfied! Just a side note- here they mix the vegetables. I come here a lot and got food to go to support their business but tonight's experience was ridiculous. My son and I get there at 6:30. I think there are maybe 2 tables waiting, 3 tables having their meals prepared and 3 people finishing up. As soon as we sit down I order drinks and edamame. Waitress vanishes for 20 minutes. Comes back with 1 drink. I ask about edamame, she said yes it's coming. We order our meals at this time. Rest of drinks and edamame show up 15 minutes later. We have now been here for 35 minutes. 3 more tables have been seated during this time. Still waiting for soup and salad and our chef. Soup and salad finally arrived. We eat and continue to wait for chef. I watch 2 chefs come out and start at tables that were sat after us. It has now been an HOUR, still no chef. Chef finally arrives 70 minutes into after we sat down. My 6 year old actually says "finally, we've been waiting forever!" At this point, I just ask for a Togo box and the check. It's now 8:15 and we are just getting food on our plates. As I'm leaving I see one of the chefs at another table with his mask around his CHIN! Not even remotely over his mouth. But Shogun San Marcos has THE BEST LUNCH DEALS. EVER. This is what you need to know: TEPPANYAKI LUNCH SPECIALS: MONDAY-THURSDAY 11:30A-2P There are 8 items you can choose from on this special lunch menu (see pic). It comes with soup OR salad, steamed OR fried rice (did you read that right - FRIED RICE IS INCLUDED!!), hibachi vegetables OR yakisoba (yakisoba?!!! that's noodles folks and I've never seen it included anywhere before). Plus, there's a hibachi shrimp appetizer that's included as well! Whew. That's alot of food. Here's a breakdown of the apps: Miso soup - kinda meh Salad - enjoyed the ginger dressing on top of the crisp greens Garlic fried rice - just simply amazing. It had eggs and chicken in there too! Hibachi veggies - there were mushrooms, bok choy (!), onions, zucchini, and red peppers. Tasted great. Hibachi shrimp appetizer - best item. Hands down. I'm getting this for my entree next time. We ordered: FILET MIGNON $12.50 It was nicely tender and seasoned just right. NEW YORK STEAK $11.50 Sis and I both agreed it's better to pay $1 more for the filet mignon as the NY steak wasn't as tender. HIBACHI FISH OF THE DAY $9.99 I had a choice between salmon and mahi mahi. I choose salmon and was happy with the portion size. I felt the salmon tasted just ok but was a bit too salty for me. I agree with the other reviewers who rated this place a 1 or 2 star. They are so deserving of the low score. First off we had reservations at 8 pm. We had to wait for the table which was fine. Then we ordered simple drinks. Waters and soda. That took about 15 min to bring us drinks. Then another 15 before we got the soup. Another 15 before the salad came out. It is now 845 at this time. At 9 I finally ask what's going on with the food. We've been there an hour and had reservations. He said the other tables had big parties and the chef was running behind. Doesn't matter what happened he never said anything until I asked. Bad service. We also asked for no veggies on one plate. It got a plateful of them. The chef although nice splattered my face with oil. Got all the seasoning on myself. Another girl. And the table. Basically don't come here. I'm sure there are better spots in the area. read more

Shogunnnnn! Woo hoo, my new favorite place to eat! Disclaimer: up until two weeks ago I hated sushi, wouldn't touch the stuff. I had given it several tries with several different "experts" guiding my tastebuds in the right direction and never quite "got it". Now I understand what all the hype is about! A few friends invited my husband and I to Shogun after raving about their awesome happy hour deals so we figured we'd be good sports and give it a shot (I was the reluctant one - the Mr. loves sushi). I let everyone else do the choosing and I just picked off everyone's plate. I was floored - the sushi was sooo damn good. The sushi-maker was entertaining too (is there a legit word for sushi-maker?). After blowing through about six rolls (at only $4.95-6.95 per roll) we were all satisfied and the bill was way low. Success! Another friend and I dined here again today around 5pm. The rolls were again, delicious (seared salmon, spicy tuna tempura and a red dragon). The large bottle of Sapporo was only $4.50 (regularly $7, guess it was happy hour again) and we split the bill at only $15 each including tip. We sat for 15min before anyone walked over, So i kindly asked the 1st waitress if we could order something to drink, she responded im off work and can't help only to sit the next couple that was waiting after us. Our soup was cold, my filet was well done when requested medium rare, no utilize, asked 3 times Asked for extra ice in the tea, had no ice. My shrimp was totally cold on my appetizer that came 10min after my main dish. And when I finally paid the bill with cash, Melissa the waitress put her arm under my arm to make it really awkward on grabbing the bill..... She was so unprofessional and rude. I've been to this location several times but was hoping they had some ramen without having to drive all the way down to San Diego (Convoy) and this place did. The weather is getting much colder and my fiancee' and I were looking for something comforting. We've been her for teppanyaki but this time wanted to try out the dining table area. It wasn't busy and we were quickly seated. We needed a minute to check out the menu cause it's been awhile. The restaurant has plenty of seating and lot of space on the tables. Also TV's were at the sushi bar and along the backside of the wall. Glad they had the NFL Monday night game going on. Our waiter was nice but noticed she was fairly new at her position. She seemed nervous and did forget things we asked to bring and check up on. We started out with the agedashi tofu; comes with 4 large pieces and i must say this is the best i've tried. usually the breading is soggy but here it's nice and crispy and the tofu cooked perfectly. The presentation (see my pics) makes you want to dive into it. As for the ramen; they had several kinds of broth; tonkotsu, miso, & miso spicy. we both got the tonkotsu but i requested mine to be spicy. i don't like miso ramen broth and i liked they were able to accommodate my request to make my tonkotsu pork flavored broth spicy. Their ramen is decent. Broth was kinda watery. Noodles were decent. Although the chasu meat was nicely prepared and melted upon each bite. But the rest tasted like a premium ramen package you can get at Mitsuwa's Japanese Market in San Diego. Overall: My ramen is experience here wasn't bad, it was ok. I'd pass on the ramen here. The service lacked but friendly. The highlight was the agedashi tofu and NFL game going on. Will come back for appetizers and teppanyaki. read more

Really horrible experience in the mist of heat wave the hostess assured us that there was air conditioning. Absolutely there was NO working air conditioning . They had old fans by each table that where full of dust.. We had a party of 8 celebrating my husband 65 th birthday and we also had my daughter who's 8 months pregnant. We all were miserable but we tried to make my husbands birthday celebration special for him. We Couldn't even enjoy the show or eat our food because of how hot it was at our table. I was there Tuesday with my family celebrating graduation. The bartender welcomed us with a smile as well as the manager. I called her our lucky "Charm" because she took us even if we do not have a reservation and we're party of 11 people. Server Joe was amazing and efficient. The service at this restaurant is sub par. We (5 adults and a child) went in at 330 PM and there were probably 3 tables of diners so it wasn't busy. We got seated but we were not approached by a server or anyone to welcome us or say anything about the place. No one offered us water, or asked if we wanted any starter. We were excited to eat there since it has been a while since we've eaten at a teppanyaki place and their menu actually looked good. I have been coming to this location for the past two years and today I walked in with a same day reservation over the phone around 2pm for a party of 6 at 6pm. When I walked in most of the employees recognized me and welcomed me in. My favorite chef their is pepe. He noyiced me walked in and let the manager know he is going to cook for my family even though they were busy. Know that's what I call customer service. I just can't explain how much I love this location. I drive almost 50 minutes from Otay lakes Chula Vista. I ordered my favorite lobster sushi roll, sesame chicken , grilled salmon, and last the steak and chicken. Food was delicious and always on point. The chief pepe does an amazing show for my kids and puts a smile to their face. I compared him today vs the other chefs and he is the best they got I would highly recommend him. As long as they keep up this great team effort I will continue to keep coming back. We are currently dining here at Shogun San Marcos. I don't know how the manager is running the floor. We were told that our server will be coming in soon. So our server's name is Karina, who is always disappearing when needed. We also noticed that Karina is busy attending some other tables so I just can't understand why the manager can't give us other server who is available or at least not that crazy busy to take care of us. The service on this restaurant will continue to suffer if this system will continue. I believe that the manager of this level is not capable of running a restaurant as busy as Shogun. I firmly believe she needs a lot of training to be able to be called a "manager" If I can only give this restaurant a zero star, I will. But I have no choice but to tick 1 star. read more

Anyways, because we were Spanish speaking I feel that we were discriminated. Other people were seated in front of us (americans) and they were treated well. Chef Tim (aka T-Dawg, aka Timbo Slice) was ahhh-maaaazinggg entertainment with jokes for daysss!! Of course super delicious food as always, especially the New York steak & colossal shrimp ~ but you come here for the show too and he absolutely crushed it for our party of 11, catering his fun guy show to all ages in our crew - toddlers, kids, teens, and us old folk as well. We laughed the entire dinner - very impressed and highly recommend. This dude was THE BEST!! Also gotta give props to the hostess, server, and manger, who gave us a warm welcome walking in. Despite having reservations, our party of five stood for 15 minutes awaiting seats around the teppan table. The food smelled delish and the other tables were getting quite the show. I love hibachi-style food so was really excited to dine. The food took quite some time to get started but then it went as swiftly as Benihana's. I had the steak and chicken combo with zero complaint. Loved eating everything. The problem I find with Shogun is that the tables are back to back with no atmosphere. I felt like I was eating in some sort of dining hall. It was loud, noisy and crowded.
