I got the combo dinner plate with the steak and chicken which includes a soup (I picked miso), salad with ginger dressing and rice (I upgraded to fried rice). The food was good! I use to always go to Benihana and I thought this tasted exactly the same. Was a little disappointed with the chef not being really into the show but it was an earlier dinner reservation at 4:30pm. I like that this restaurant didn't have a dress code, convenient to go after a theme park in your work out attire. read more

There's only one reason to go here. Teppanyaki. Been to Benihana for years in Carlsbad and I always come back to Shogun because their Teppan is better. Don't come for the sushi or anything else. This place is legit despite the 1 star reviews. Food wise, I can't say the same for anything else but compared to Benihana, this place is more consistent. To quote Mcconaughey in True Detective S1, "this place is like somebody's memory of a hibachi restaurant, and the memory is fading" Staff was friendly and they were hustling but everyone working here , and everyone eating here really just seemed tired and worn out. Fried rice and the New York steak were delicious but listen the rules have changed in Hibachi World... no more flying shrimp.. and no more onion volcano. Some un-athletic bloke took a tumble craning his neck for a flying crustacean and now here we are. Also the smoothie I got was so bad I actually recommend trying it because I need more understanding of the flavors that were in it. Dinner and a show. Shogun offers the option of tepen dinning which seats around the grill where you can watch the chef prepare your food with some flare. They also offer the option to sit in a private table/booth. I personally enjoy the tepen option. For this trip I did lunch which has some small differences from dinner. With lunch your meal includes soup or salad, your entree, rice and grilled veggies. Dinner includes BOTH soup and salad, entree, rice, veggies and some shrimp with your meal. You can also upgrade from regular rice to chicken fried rice. To start we had gyoza and firecracker shrimp. The gyoza wasn't a hit for me, I asked for pan fried but they didn't have the hard crust on the bottom I enjoy. The firecracker shrimp was great, the tempura was spot on and had such a perfect crunch and lightness to the batter. It's definitely on the spicy side! I ordered the Aki combo option and picked the salad. The salad has a ginger dressing that I find to be a solid balance of sweet and savory, I really enjoyed the salad. My entree included filet mignon, sesame chicken and shrimp and I upgraded to chicken fried rice. Note, if you do tepen you may end up sitting with others in order to fill the table; in my case we were with another group. The chef typically starts by confirming which person ordered which meal as they are all prepared at the same time. In this case that didn't happen and I would encourage you to make sure they do! My filet ended up being given to a small child. I let the chef know that I had the Aki and he had the kitchen bring a new steak out to prepare. It wasn't a HUGE issue but... I did have to wait for my food while everyone else's was done and it was a bit irritating. The food itself was delicious and my steak was cooked perfectly. The chicken fried rice is worth the upgrade, I suggest that if you enjoy fried rice. I find the entree to be more than enough food and had a whole leftover container I left with, definitely enough for a 2nd meal. Total order included 2 appetizers, 2 combo meals (that included 3 proteins), 2 sodas and 1 cocktail (cocktail was a throw away the coconut mojito didn't taste like either). The total bill was just over $100 and I find that a fair price for everything you get. All in all it was a good trip and a good spot for a large group or a couple date. 4 stars is due to the steak issue and the cocktail. read more

First time visiting this location in San Marcos and it was a really pleasant experience from start to finish. Hostess greeted us with a smile and our server was friendly as well the whole time we dined. Food was a 10/10 we ordered fried rice, chicken teriyakis and spicy edamame for an appetizer. Ambiance and restaurant were decent. This is an older location but still very cozy. This is a place that's perfect to celebrate a family dinner or a date night. Will return, thanks shogun! read more

Food was good and prices were decent, but the customer service was crazy to me, my cook was very sweet but the ladies bringing my drinks and food were not so nice, I smiled and thanked them and they ignored me multiple times, they actually seemed like if they were bothered, they sang happy birthday with a straight face hahaha they didn't smile or nothing...very awkward experience. Not happy with the food quality or the service. Waited for a long time to have our dinner started. I understand maybe it was due to the pandemic and being short staffed but maybe don't take so many reservations and leave people hanging for a long time especially a lot of families are here with young kids. The good: They have HH Mon - Fri from 5:00 - 6:30 PM and weekends 3:00 - 6:00 PM. BTW - They have a Shogun special with a large beer / large hot sake combo! Their sushi is good and sushi rice is cooked right! The bad: Where do I start? It took 15 mins for anyone to acknowledge us after we were seated. Tempura was AWFUL. Tasted like they used pancake batter or waffle mix and it was overcooked. Servers had the audacity to send out tempura shrimp without tempura sauce and katsu chicken without tonkatsu sauce. WTF? (I am pretty sure my eggrolls at Jack in the Box had the right dipping sauce!?!) Sauce ignorance aside, just be prepared that they'll prob forget some part of your order. Bussers and food runners had zero sense of urgency. Their manager was issuing apologies to EVERY table around us that night from the table of 10 to our right to the family of 5 to our left that had every other dish come out wrong! From start to finish, it was a 1 hr and 45 minute meal time. I could have had fondue at Melting Pot for all the time Shogun wasted. Came here to celebrate grandpa's birthday. The adults ordered the Shogun special. Which consisted of choice of meat (we choice ribeye), lobster, shrimp, and scallops. This is in addition to the fried rice, soup ( miso or onion), salad, and sautéed veggies. We also order Yakisoba noodles for the kids Food wise, it wasn't bad, but of course you come to these places more for the show, than for the quality of the food. We felt like everything was overly salted and flavored the same way. We were all thirsty by the time we left. I can feel my blood pressure shoot up over the course of the meal, and surprisingly it had nothing to do with the kiddos this time. Service was good, and our chef was entertaining. Service started off good- but then down hill- waiter never put our appetizer order in- said he would "go check on it" when our chef was cooking we realized they didn't have a lobster tail (my husband was getting the shogun special) we asked at the end. And the chef said the waiter wrote down the wrong order- I feel like the chefs usually make sure of the orders before they begin cooking- maybe that's benihana. Our water glasses were empty most of our meal and finally our appetizer came out after we started eating our dinner- food was good loved the fried rice. The food was decent, drinks were TERRIBLE, our server was decent, but the horrible service we received from the manager, Charm was the nail on the coffin. I was there celebrating two birthdays with a group of my closest girlfriends. Before our drinks and appetizers even came out we were approached by Charm (the manager) and she asked us to keep our voices down. The whole experience was ruined from the start. Our chef, Santos tried his best to help make it less akward and help come back from the comments she made to our table. During the whole dinner show, she stayed around our area almost like she was babysitting us the whole time. We asked to speak with her towards the end of our dinner again and then she took a while to come back. Not sure why all the bad reviews, seems a lot of them are people who didn't want to wait for stuff. The nature of how a teppanyaki restaurant operates you think would give people some insight that while the folks give you wait estimates they are just that.... estimates. Anyways moving on... It was my first time at Shogun and I will for sure be back. The service was good, our chef Timmy was hilarious. I appreciated that he really seemed to be enjoying his job. Honestly I didn't go to Shogun cus I wanted a show... I just wanted some Japanese steak, rice, and veggies but I'm so glad that we got Timmy as our chef. The food was DELICIOUS! Made a reservation for 5pm weekday. Had to wait for the entire party before seating. At least one person should order fried rice to maximize your show. Half the cool entertainment the cook does is tied to the fried rice. Food was timed great. Usually at other teppanyaki places, the food comes on your plate at different times. Well I am going to start off by saying a female worker was wearing a hoodie with two middle fingers flipping off on the back of it which I think is just not classy for a decent class restaurant. That really wasn't a big deal though and this 2/5 review is mainly because the food was not great, prices are high and cleanliness of place. So right as we sat down we noticed the whole table was very sticky and dirty even after she wiped it down. The stove also looked so dirty with left over food crumbs and food build up on it (who knows how long it's been there). I have had a lot of hibachi in my lifetime and this was definitely by far the worst. There was absolutely no flavor to the food, it was so bland. There was no lemon used on any of the shrimp, scallops or lobster which was shocking because that is what gives it flavor. Hardly any butter used too. Everything was so bland even the yum yum sauce. The edamame was super super salty it was hard to eat. I have had a lot of hibachi a lot cheaper than this place that taste amazing so leaving there paying more than most places with it being the worst hibachi I've had was really disappointing. I am also not a picky eater and hardly ever leave bad reviews. I do have to say our chef Sal was very energetic and friendly and put on a good show. He was very great and we enjoyed him even though the food didn't taste that great. Also my boyfriend and I both are now feeling nauseous and like we're gonna throw up. Won't attempt to come back to this place again. I called in advance to see if they took reservations. The hostess said yes, but for the night they weren't accepting anymore. I asked if they accepted walk-ins and she said yes, but the wait time would be about 30 minutes, which would increase the later we came. We drove over immediately and got there by 6:00pm. The hostess told me it would be a 30 min wait for a party of 3. I was agreeable and they took my name and number and told me they would text me when my table was ready. I went to get boba down the street and came back. I waited outside a bit and didn't know how long it was, so I checked in with the hostess. She asked if I got a text, and I said no. She asked how long I was waiting for, and I said "about 20-25 minutes". She looked at her kiosk thing and told me "you checked in 23 minutes ago. Wait for your text. We're telling people it's about a 45 minute wait now". So I head back outside and wait. At this point it's about 7:30. I check in to see how much longer, and the hostess has the nerve to tell me "maybe about 20 more minutes". I end up leaving because they aren't honest with their estimates at all. I head to Al Toque Peruvian Food about 10 minutes away. They had live music and GREAT food. And wonderful service. You should go there instead. I left the Peruvian restaurant at 9pm and guess what? I still haven't gotten a text from them that my table is ready!! Don't even bother eating here. Just go to Al Toque and get their ceviche, surf and turf rice plate, and rib eye fried rice. After we finally ordered and got our food, it was another long wait to have someone come back to take another order. We live around the corner and finally checked out Shogun as I've heard great things. Social distancing was happening and we felt very comfortable. Our waiter was very accommodating with my special pregnancy sushi requests. My husband loves the teppan style shows so he enjoyed himself. Our chef was friendly and made the usual jokes. My husband loved the fried rice and steak and opted for onion soup instead of the usual miso. My garlic edamame and half roll were delicious. The sherbet was also tasty. I had reservations at 6:30 we got sat down and immediately got rushed to order are you ready? Are you ready? Do you know what you want? Do you know what you want? The waitress was super short with us. I get if your busy but this shouldn't take away from the quality service you provide your customers. We had no water and had to keep looking for our waitress to get any service. My girlfriend ordered a drink and it tasted like cherry cough syrup and we couldn't even find the waitress to fix our drink we had to do it ourselves by going up to the bar and asking the bartender. I come here a lot and got food to go to support their business but tonight's experience was ridiculous. My son and I get there at 6:30. I think there are maybe 2 tables waiting, 3 tables having their meals prepared and 3 people finishing up. As soon as we sit down I order drinks and edamame. Waitress vanishes for 20 minutes. Comes back with 1 drink. I ask about edamame, she said yes it's coming. We order our meals at this time. Rest of drinks and edamame show up 15 minutes later. We have now been here for 35 minutes. 3 more tables have been seated during this time. Still waiting for soup and salad and our chef. Soup and salad finally arrived. We eat and continue to wait for chef. I watch 2 chefs come out and start at tables that were sat after us. It has now been an HOUR, still no chef. Chef finally arrives 70 minutes into after we sat down. My 6 year old actually says "finally, we've been waiting forever!" At this point, I just ask for a Togo box and the check. It's now 8:15 and we are just getting food on our plates. As I'm leaving I see one of the chefs at another table with his mask around his CHIN! Not even remotely over his mouth. Then we ordered simple drinks. Waters and soda. That took about 15 min to bring us drinks. Then another 15 before we got the soup. Another 15 before the salad came out. It is now 845 at this time. At 9 I finally ask what's going on with the food. We've been there an hour and had reservations. He said the other tables had big parties and the chef was running behind. Doesn't matter what happened he never said anything until I asked. Bad service. We also asked for no veggies on one plate. It got a plateful of them. On my B-Day I decided to go and support the local upper scale shotguns. We sat for 15min before anyone walked over, So i kindly asked the 1st waitress if we could order something to drink, she responded im off work and can't help only to sit the next couple that was waiting after us. Our soup was cold, my filet was well done when requested medium rare, no utilize, asked 3 times Asked for extra ice in the tea, had no ice. My shrimp was totally cold on my appetizer that came 10min after my main dish. And when I finally paid the bill with cash, Melissa the waitress put her arm under my arm to make it really awkward on grabbing the bill..... She was so unprofessional and rude. Really horrible experience in the mist of heat wave the hostess assured us that there was air conditioning. Absolutely there was NO working air conditioning . They had old fans by each table that where full of dust.. We had a party of 8 celebrating my husband 65 th birthday and we also had my daughter who's 8 months pregnant. We all were miserable but we tried to make my husbands birthday celebration special for him. We Couldn't even enjoy the show or eat our food because of how hot it was at our table. Shogun is like the similar version of Benihanas just much more approachable, kind of like the cute friend but less high maintenance! Haha Soooo good! I can't believe I've never been here but pretty much, looks are deceiving, the outside doesn't make it look that great but as you walk in, there's a few tables to dine at then you get the grill which yup, is just like Benihanas! Haha They have basically the same menu too- grilled chicken, shrimp, steak- you name it, the cooks grill it along with your veggies, soup and rice! Yup, the chefs even do the cute tricks too and I might even say they are even a bit better! Price wise, it's a bit pricey so I say go for lunch which is about half off! Either way, it's definitely worth it and I never leave unsatisfied! Just a side note- here they mix the vegetables. That's the only difference, so say, if you're like me and don't like onions you better tell them before so you don't get any! read more
