Everything we ordered from appetizers to main course to dessert was excellent - it was molecular gastronomy concept. Excellent staff, they took care of every little request. We were a group of 8 and they didn't have a suitable table to accommodate all of us. They set up one upstairs just for us and had a dedicated staff to attend to us. The drinks were underwhelming- calcutta paan, mango illusion, Monk's dream, Papaya mule. the two stars are earned by batti da murg and malai soya chop. Not to forget Jeera rice with 1:1 ratio - maybe there was more jeera than rice. Paani puri shots looked good-most of them are too sweet. Service sucked with long waiting time, wrong orders getting delivered. Given Saturday evening can be busy- least you can expect is to have the right order coming to your table. We were there to Celebrate our Bday. Food was great, we liked most of it. Portions on some were small for the price. Overall service was good cud be improved a bit. Ambiance was great. There were a lot of Birthdays that day, and they kept playing the same song. That cud have been changed. But that's ok. Will go again for the goal gappas aka pani puri. read more

I do not write reviews for restaurants or places ever. However, in hopes that I can save someone some agony, I have decided to write one for Shosha. My night out with my wife started with our reservation at 7:30 PM. We were taken to our table and provided with one menu between the two of us. No issue, my wife orders and I never look at menus anyways. Water came promptly, my wife decided what she wanted after looking at the menu for about 10 minutes. Then we waited. Then we waited some more. Then we waited some more. Eventually after about 25 minutes of waiting I turned around and started making eye contact with everyone who worked in the restaurant. When that didn't work, I spoke to someone who was bringing food to the table next to us and got their attention and told them we were ready to order. After 10 more minutes, someone came out and took our order. We ordered the pani puri shots, smoky baigan bharta, white rice, lachcha paratha, and gulab jamun ice cream with caviar. The time was 8:15 PM. Fine - the service is horrible, food must be good right? Unfortunately, the food was as good as the service. Let's start with the pani puri. After 30 minutes of waiting, our pani puri shots finally came out to us. Why the pani puri shots took 30 minutes to prepare is beyond me, seems like something that should take about 5-10 minutes to throw together in the kitchen. The pani puri shots came out with 6 "shot glasses" filled with 3 different liquids and with a puri sitting on top of the shot glass. There is a bowl with dry ice above in the contraption it comes out in for theatrics. The first "shot" I had was dark red - a sweet tamarind shot similar to the red liquid of typical pani puri. I found this decent but overly sweet. My wife agreed, it was mediocre and a bit too sweet. The second "shot" was a green liquid - this was not mint like typical, it was cilantro which I do not care for. My wife liked the green one. The third "shot" was a light red - something like a pineapple/tropical liquid. Neither my wife or I cared for this at all. After about 10 more minutes of waiting our baigan bharta, rice, and paratha came out. Although I am not Indian, my wife is, and we both know what paratha is. What we received - although the server called it paratha - looked like and tasted like roti. There were no layers like paratha has. That is a minor gripe, it tasted fine but I wouldn't call it paratha. Fried roti maybe, but without layers it isn't paratha. The plain rice was as expected. The baigan bharta unfortunately was disappointing. Both my wife and I thought it had a very strong tamarind flavor to it, and really not much else. My wife thought it was mediocre, I did not particularly care for it. They describe it as smoky - that is a difficult flavor to get but if you describe it as that, it is what I expect. I did not get smoky, I got tamarind and nothing else. By the time the gulab jamun ice cream came, I knew what to expect. Unfortunately, my expectations were met with a disappointing dessert. The texture of this dessert is bizarre - imagine a bready ice cream. It had an intense cardamom and rose flavor, not the sweet gulab jamun flavor we expected. Combined with the odd texture, there just wasn't anything redeeming about it other than the fact that it represented the end of our experience at Shosha. Fortunately, the bill came promptly - even before we finished our dessert, and we were able to conclude our experience at Shosha at 9:15 PM. If the above wasn't enough to deter you, then let me add: much like the rest of the service, in order to get our water refilled I had to flag down a person bringing out food who then got the person who was pouring water at tables to come to us. The only thing fine dining about this place is the price. I didn't care about price going in, but with a high price tag, I am expecting at least an ok experience. That is not what I got. Instead, I left trying to think of a worse restaurant experience than the one I had just had and came up empty. So, I decided to write this review in hopes of saving you from making the same mistake I did. I do not recommend it, there is literally nothing redeeming about it. If you still decide to go after reading this at least you know what to expect. read more

Delicious, unique Indian dishes, in a beautiful, modern, and chic ambiance. Not your traditional fare, so don't expect extra spicy food or extra large portions. The dishes are prepared with wonderful spices and flavor, and courses are filling. read more

first of all it's not a fine dining , so do not go with that expectation. For fine dinning you need to take care of finer things. The restaurant was pretty messy., the menu was messy with food stains, cutlery need to be replaced, cleanliness is questionable. Restrooms were horrible. People in hospitality need to understand that they are in industry to provide experience. not just good food!! read more

My brother recommended the restaurant and we all enjoyed the dinner as the food was delicious and the service was tentative. We celebrated the birthday and they offered a complimentary dessert for my niece belated birthday! we will definitely come back when my sister is in town with my nieces. Ambiance at first looked good but the table which we got initially was broken and later they gave us the corner space which was so dirty and not all cleaned!!!!!! The food here is great, loved it. But, the service was really really poor. We ordered drinks and appetizers. The appetizers were served after 30 minutes and it took them an hour to get the drinks. Our total dinner time was around 2.5 hours. The service was poor which was somewhat compensated by the food. Everything we ordered was delicious, would highly recommend.. except the desserts. Love the food and service at Shosha. Very creative menu. We went there today (mothers day) and it was teeming with people, so I was skeptical. But everything was managed really well. I even sent back the Mango Mojito as I wanted the clarified version and they didnt even bat an eyelid. Try their Laal Maas -- its really good. I food is spicy though, which I like -- its an Indian restaurant after all :) Ps -- Shout out to our server was Savio. Managed the entire 2nd floor by himself with a smile on his face. read more

The Dank Bungalow chicken is nice and spicy. I would skip the gulab jamun ice cream since it's just ice cream with the syrup of gulab jamun candied. I liked the ice cream but the candied syrup was too sticky and difficult to eat and kept sticking to my teeth so I only ate the ice cream. Either get the curry leaf mousse or if you really want to eat ice cream you can get gelato from a nearby shop at a cheaper price. One good thing about the place is serving size is perfect and doesn't feel like you either over ate or wasted food. read more

Tried it out for a work event. The food service was pretty fast at lunch and the food looked fairly exciting and innovating. Though the 4 star is mostly for the service and innovative food names and it's presentation. The taste of food itself doesn't stand out that much. read more

Feeling ripped off. Tl;dr: If Bay Area desis want to feel like high prices equate good quality, then they'd be fooled into going here. Menu is ambitious but the food fails to deliver. There's something cringe about everything there -- the trying-too-hard-to-be-different. Just focus on the food quality for heavens sake! A restaurant that tried to be cute but disappointed. Living up to its name that means showing off, this restaurant is only focused on "shosha" in the presentation of food, and to some extent the ambience is alright, but the food is horrendously bad. I'd much rather prefer an authentic simple hole in the wall Indian restaurant that focuses on consistently delicious food. They can't seem to pull off the ambience part either, frankly. Tacky at best. Biryani was basically like eating tomato masala rice with chicken curry in it. They shouldn't even call it biryani. That's how far off it was. Fish moilee was lacking any flavor, lamb bhuna gosht was bland like someone forgot to add salt. Naans, rotis and kulchas were all mediocre at best. They're charging an arm and a leg and have a good location going for them, but I doubt this one will last. Much shosha about nothing. read more

This is a fantastic restaurant. We held a private event here and they were accommodating at every step - from offering menu suggestions, offering to decorate on our behalf, helping us to set up music, placing signs to direct guests, printing custom menus, bringing sparklers out for cakes, and accommodating any other requests during the event. They really go all-out to give you a premium feel at an ambiance, service, and most importantly, culinary level. Not only is the restaurant decorated well, but that same creativity and uniqueness is expressed in both the taste and presentation of their dishes and cocktails. The Dahi Kebab, Jackfruit Bao, Hari Mirch Paneer were particularly noteworthy and unique as far as Indian food goes. I personally love trying out new cocktails, doubly so at Indian restaurants, so I enjoyed the Monk's Dream and Peru Blossom. However, the star of the show was the Paan Old Fashioned - which I was honestly craving as I went to bed that night. Sometimes to complement the more unique dishes, you'd also want more traditional Indian dishes like Chana Masala and Dal, and those were equally enjoyed by many of our guests. Lastly, the dessert, Rasmisu, is a must-have, and barely a morsel was left over. Can't wait to go back to try the items we were too full to try this time around. I personally love restaurants like this because as much as we love classic Indian food, I love seeing the potential of Indian flavors expressed in creative ways, and Shosha nails it. read more

We ate at Shosha last Friday. The food was good but the service was nothing short of terrible. It ruined our entire dining experience. For eg., no one came to take our order for appetizers for 20 mins or so after being seated. The apps took another 20 mins to come out. We then ordered the main course as well, since we were expecting delays. It was almost 55 mins between appetizers and main course coming out, between which we had to ask for the owner to confirm what the status of our food was. No one was paying attention to the tables and it took a while before the owner came to our table too. Disappointing! They knew we waited for this long but nobody apologized or did anything to make the situation better for us. It seemed like this was business as usual for them. Not sure what the acoustics situation is in the restaurant, but it can get very noisy inside too. It was hard for us to have conversations on our table because of the noise while we patiently for our food to come out. Overall, we did not enjoy the experience. read more

If you want to experience fine dining Indian restaurant, I would highly recommend this place. Went to Shosha's with a big group of 15 people. The cocktails are probably the best Indian flavored ones in the Bay Area. We have the 7 course dinner experience and each one of it was amazing. We could taste the freshness and rich taste of Indian dishes , Vada Pav and mushroom hot and sour were really good and it didn't feel like the typical Indian restaurant taste. Was a walk in on a Friday night and had a wonderful time. The server recommended a few top dishes and they were all very flavorful. The fish was well spiced and had good texture from the fry. Shosha means Showoff, I get it. No doubt they have a great interior. But, in the end, it is all about the quality of food. This is where Shosha - The Showoff crumbled. Not a single item was tasting right. Cocktails - Peru Blossom: Did not feel any flavor other than red chilies and masala. What is Peru about in this drink? Chicken 65 Tikka: Chicken pieces had an outside spicy layer but from the inside, they were kind of raw and bland. Definitely, they were lacking marination. Chutney dusted Paneer Tikka: it had a weird flavor, maybe wrapped with too much masala. I forced myself to enjoy it but I couldn't. Daal Bukhara: It was more a (cream + few spoons of daal + canned tomato puree) dish - not cooked very well that gives strong sour-bitter after-taste. Ewww! M4: it felt like eating cream instead of Methi Matar malai Makhan. BTW, there was no Makhan in it. It was all heavy whipping cream + some veg. Yuck! Daak Bungalow Chicken: It felt like the chicken was not cooked with curry instead it was precooked and the curry and chicken pieces were warmed together. That's why the curry was tasting nice but the chicken was bland. Garlic Naan: stretchy, not crunchy from outside and soft from inside. Tandoori roti: too soft instead of crunchy. Cooking is my hobby and I can easily tell that not a single dish was made from scratch. It was like last min mixing ready to use ingredients together. A good recipe does not need that much or hardly any cream. A dish cooked from scratch definitely tastes better if a recipe is followed as intended. The last minute mixing precooked curries with other ingredients cannot bring the great taste. I would appreciate if the owner focuses on their kitchen to maintain their Shosha.
