As plant-based eaters, we were excited to discover this restaurant. But it did not quite meet our expectations. The plant-based burger had spices my wife does not care for, so she could not finish her meal. But the fries were very good. The lack of seating was quite disappointing, and the few tables were anything but cozy. We may try Shouk at another location in the future, but won't return here. (Not sure how close to Ballston, VA other locations are. We had not seen one previously). read more

What a great find! Tucked away next to MOM's Market, we grabbed a takeout lunch and were blown away by this Israeli street food. The Za'atar Cauliflower comes in delicious, thick, soft, fresh pita, spread with hummus. They didn't spare the za'atar on the cauliflower and it's super tasty. There are chickpeas in there too and some veggies, and yummy sauce -- it's very delicious and satisfying. We also got the shawarma hummus bowl -- the shawarma being oyster mushrooms, not meet, on a bed of fresh arugula, on top of a large bowl of hummus. Mixed in there was a nice amount of lightly pickled cabbage and cucumber slices, just enough to give the tasty hummus just a bit of zing. Yum! (It came with a piece of that awesome pita.) We were stuffed but couldn't stop eating -- ate it all! Now we want to go back and try everything -- and get that cauliflower again and again. read more

Their signature shouk burger is a must-try item! The patty is enormous, dense and packed with textures (can taste crunchy bean bits) and flavor depth (almost falafel-like). The toppings were generous and included pickled radish, onions, mushrooms, roasted red pepper and arugula. They complemented the burger well. The sauce was light (perfect amount added). All these components were held together by a toasted whole wheat pita (no staleness or crumbling). A great place for a healthy yet hearty meal or snack ! Ordered DoorDash from here tonight and all I can say is WOW. I'll be honest, my fiancee and I ate a lot of plant based food last year because we wanted to do better for the environment, but we've fallen short this year. I honestly haven't been in the ~mood~ to eat as many plant based meals lately, but my fiancee convinced me otherwise this evening. After feeling hesitant, I am SO GLAD that we ended up dining here. We ordered the Shouk'n Caesar and the falafel bowl with hummus and both dishes were full of flavor and textures. The shouk'n caesar is really good as it looks. The dressing, kale, and red onions all meld together in a flavorful punch, but the crispy oyster "shouk'n" that came on top of the salad left me....shouk. It was so good and crunchy and I loved the "pull" of the oyster mushrooms--almost as if it were real chicken. The falafel bowl also left me so ~shouk~. The falafel itself was perfectly crispy (even after sitting in our delivery driver's car), so flavorful, and not to dry and not to wet (aka the PERFECT texture!) The hummus was smooth and delicious, and the bowl itself was just a wonderful combination of flavors and textures. As someone who waited a long time to try Shouk, I'm so glad that they opened right next to my apartment in Rockville and I'm even happier that the food did not disappoint. What a cute spot! I decided to try them out after grocery shopping. They have outdoor seating- as well as indoor. I love the simple but colorful decor. Fantastic vegetarian restaurant. My wife had the falafel in pita. Our son had the shouk'n nuggest and i had the bbq jackfruit pita. Everything was great, the nuggets are essentially breaded fried oyster mushrooms. Our toddler ate them up and hes a picky eater. The bbq jackfruit pita was an experience. It had the texture of a pork bbq sandwich and had the bbq taste but was a little sweeter. I tried the falafel and that was good as well. read more

So glad this spot opened up in Rockville! The fried shouk'n pita was my favorite!! I loved the crunchy oyster mushroom, it was super flavorful. Be sure to get the shouk sauce- it was creamy and garlicky. The seasoned fries were also delicious! The portion was a little small considering they were $4.95 but they tasted fresh, were crispy, and had good seasoning on them. Shouk is known for their shouk burger of course but it was just alright in terms of flavor. A plus is the portion...it's massive! One pita was certainly very filling and I even had some leftover. I hate to be a downer and contemplated this review, but I want this spot to improve so here I go: I had very high expectations and I do have very high expectations on hummus and falafel. First thing coming in, very heavy oil smell but not in a good way. Suggests a ventilation issue. Ordering is straightforward enough on the kiosk, but somehow my drink order never made its way and didn't show on the cashier's screen. We ordered tons of food to try: The showstopper I thought would be the mushroom shawarma and it was cold. Hummus and falafel, I was not blown away, tasted pretty standart. By looking online, I expected casual, and indeed it os, a couple tables and chairs in a small space. I am NOT a vegetarian, but the food here was really good. On the down sode , the ordering system sucks. All ordering is done on a touchscreen, and you can change some things but not others. For example, cucumber and onions are listed as one item you can have or remove, no big deal I figured they were mixed together. Watching the young lady putting the sandwich together I saw her putting them on individually. Would have been nice to have the cucumbers, the onions are what was not wanted. I tried this restaurant with a friend, after hearing about it months ago. I liked it and will probably return. The ordering process is easy, since you can order online or at a screen near the register. Parking is free and easy, but it's next to MOM's Organic Market so there are people coming and going. It seemed clean overall, but our table had rice on it left over from someone else's meal. When we got our food, it had no utensils or napkins in the bag and we had to request them. Maybe for a pita that is okay, but for a bowl of food, it should have been obvious they are needed. The utensils are bamboo, which makes them great for the environment, but only slightly useful for eating. There is a person behind the counter, and he was friendly during our visit. The menu is limited and plant-based. Depending on your personal preferences, this could be a positive or a negative. Personally, I'd have preferred a more extensive menu, but what they do have is good. It's kosher, so I'm sure the limited ingredients help with maintaining the designation. My friend ate the mushrooms and the cauliflower. She said the mushroom tasted like falafel with a mushy center. I don't like mushrooms, so I didn't try it. The cauliflower had a bit of an overpowering tart flavor and somewhat of a slippery texture. It was good, but I'd not order it again. I think really, this place has good falafel. Having eaten my fair share of falafel, I enjoyed the authentic flavor and the ratio of ingredients. Open the box on its edge....I lost a ball by opening it on the side! The fries are really good and compliment the falafel well. I ordered them without seasoning on top. It's actually common to stuff them right into the pita. SO GOOD! We got the shouk burger and fried shouk'n and both were top notch. The shouk burger was really flavorful, which is a huge bonus since sometimes vegetarian burgers can lack flavor and depth. The fried shouk'n was also delicious and flavorful, and super crunchy. The boxes they come in are also helpful in holding it. Note that there's a pull tab in the middle to rip it open like a hot pocket lol They had a small self serve water dispenser, with cups next to it. Ordering was done on a touch screen, which was convenient, and you're able to wait around 'til you're called. There are 1-2 tables insides and a few bar stool seats towards the window. There are a few seats outdoors but it's not covered. Wait was quick, and staff was really friendly. I was also very impressed with all the effort in staying green and using compostable utensils, cups, napkins, etc.! Overall I can't rave enough about Shouk and can't wait to go back. read more

They are amazing across the board and this new location upholds the same great quality and quickness as the other stores in dc. The staff is helpful and friendly. For anyones first time I would recommend the shouk burger or fried shouk'n pita sandwich(fried and breaded oyster mushrooms) with spiced fries and Harissa Mayo. If you want something lighter then the nuggets are definitely worth a go! They also have a shouk'n Cesar salad which looks interesting but I have yet to try. And I personally love the Cardamom cookie, so if you like cardamom I would definitely try it too. I will say it can be pricey but it's worth it IMO. read more

I'm so glad that I finally made it to this foodie destination. The ambiance of the restaurant transported me back to my experience venturing Jerusalem's food scene. The food there is award winning! I ordered the Shouk burger with spicy harissa, sweet potato fries, and shouk sauce. This veggie burger was delicious and filling. It really looks like a burger and felt more alive (less processed) from a live food perspective than other veggie burgers I've eaten. Even if the burger was dehydrated and raw I'm sure it would be good! The pita held up with all of the fresh condiments and produce. The spicy harissa packed a nice warm pinch of heat. Finally the sweet potato fries were so good. The fries tasted and looked hand-cut. The fries were crisp and dipping them into the shouk sauce was peace on earth. Treat yourself! read more

I will preface this by saying I am fine with vegetarian food. However shock's menu is fairly sparse. Also, nothing described in a manner that feels interesting or appealing. My gut said, "run" but my mind said "try it before you judge". I am sorry gut, you are always right. Had the veggie burger. The menu said it was on TV, so i thought 'it had to be good'. First few bites were ok, but about 1/3 into the sandwich, the burger became unbearable. It is basically beans and something else smashed together in a patty. If you enjoy eating black beans out of the can, then this is a lot like that. BTW: You have to pay extra for flavor (the sauces are about a $1 extra.) it helps a bit, I guess. Considering how lame the taste is, you would expect them to offer sauces for free. On the positive, the food quality was good, just not the flavor.
