Sushi is always so fresh. I've fallen in love with their no rice roll Called the "Jo momma" I'm not sure if it's on the menu, but it's amazing if you're wanting a no ice roll. I was not impressed to say the least. We came in and wanted to sit outside, the owner said we couldn't which wasn't a super big deal. The prices for the amount of food and quality is not justifiable. We attempted to dine here on Friday February 13th to celebrate a birthday. This review is solely for the ambiance and interaction with staff, not the food. When we walked in, we were immediately met with the strong pungent aroma of sewage, we were quickly greeted and asked how many in our party without further instruction and the staff member quickly left to find a table, then another employer quickly asked us the same question and seated us. We sat for approximately one minute before a server approached us, hastily informed us we could view the menu by scanning the QR code displayed on the table, and then quickly turned to walk away before I had to ask for water for the table. She then quickly turned to walk away again without asking anyone else at our table if they wanted anything else to drink, so I again quickly asked for a bottled beverage. Our entire experience, albeit very brief, at Shoyu was terrible from the moment we walked in and I don't recommend it for that reason. I would not normally leave such a negative review based on this brief of an experience; but the experience was so bad I felt it necessary to do so. So again, this review is based solely on our experience being in the restaurant for less than five minutes and the ambiance and interaction with staff. We do not plan to return. read more

This was our 1st visit here. We've been wanting to try this place out because we love sushi and it definitely didn't disappoint. We were greeted right away and seated promptly and had our drinks. The only bad thing that I would say is the parking. I wish parking was better. On this visit we had the gyoza dumplings, crunchy shrimp roll on soy wrapper, spicy California roll and rainbow roll. Everything we had was so delicious and had so much flavor and portions were perfect too. Staff were friendly and made sure we had refills to our drinks. Came out on Friday night to Shoyu 2 after seeing lots of great reviews. We had a large party so we made reservations. We were seated immediately. The place was full and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The menu is extensive and there are plenty of options for sushi lovers and folks that loved cooked options alike. We started off with gyoza and egg rolls for appetizers. We ordered Ichiban, crunchy, mango-gogo and Firestone rolls. Miso soup, mixed tempura and shrimp tempura and two types of fried rice. The food arrived promptly. Very good size portions. The fish was fresh and good flavor the one critic was the mango-gogo was a bit salty. I need to start off with the fact that I've been here before and this place used to be incredible. Not so much anymore. I'm not sure why it's changed for the worse, but there's not much good here except the ambience and the friendliness of the staff. The two downfalls of this place was that the sushi wasn't fresh and it was highly overpriced. I can handle one of those things but both together puts this place on the no-go list. I had sushi a few minutes away a couple of weeks ago and it was way fresher and about $5-7 less per roll. I can't justify $21-23 per roll for a majority of the ones we got. Also $18 for fried rice is crazy. The only redeeming part of the ridiculously priced meal was that the server was friendly. He went out of his way to get us refills but considering the sodas are $3.75!!!! a piece, I would expect that. One disappointment with him though was that we brought up the fact that a couple of the rolls with crab tasted off and made mine, my daughter, her boyfriend's stomach turn (they even spit there's out discreetly and she never does that as she is a sushi lover). The server said he would check and was gone just a bit. When he returned he said that's just how snow crab is. I didn't argue with him because I didn't want to make a scene but I've had snow crab many times (for example, a few weeks ago in LA at a Louisiana style crab in a bag place) and it was great. It wasn't because it was snow crab. I suspect it was either old or cheap or even possibly both. The "Nachos" tasted and looked like cat food and many of the items were mushy. The place is decorated well and on point for a trendy destination but not worth how much they want you to pay for it-as evidenced by my receipt which I took a picture of because I was shocked when we got it. We still left a nice tip but left feeling disappointed. I hate taking a once-upon-time great place off the list but my stomach is still hurting six hours later. read more

When we walked in for dinner, we noticed the place was almost empty. That should have been our first clue. A plus for the restaurant is that the staff members are very friendly. But the food and atmosphere have changed since our last visit a couple of years ago. We ordered tepppan (prepared in the kitchen) instead of sushi this time. It was overcooked, dry, and generally tasteless. Every bite had to be dipped in one of the sauces just to get it down. To make matters worse, someone had a birthday, and they played the most obnoxious birthday song over the speaker system at full volume. It went on way too long. I had to cover my ears. To make things worse, they had flashing lights to accompany the music. It became a circus atmosphere. The whole experience was an awful assault on the senses. We won't be going back. read more

The spicy pork is the only entree I saw that was any kind of spicy but had really good flavor. Was maybe a 6/10 on spicy level for me. The beef GoGoGi was extremely tender and flavorful. It goes so good with their white rice. We had 2 different tempura rolls that were huge. The Las Vegas roll had a tasty sauce drizzled on top and the rattlesnake had nice big pieces of tuna inside. Overall I'm definitely going again! They also did this really cool bday thing for someone where they played a crazy version of happy bday and lowered the lights and made it look like a club before going over and singing happy bday to the individual celebrating. I wanna start off with, I love this sushi spot! It's so good and different from Love Sushi which I grew up going to in Bakersfield. The food at shoyu is reasonably priced, great flavor, and just so many options. My only reason for lacking some stars is because the management is honestly really difficult to watch. I've never had an issue with servers ever. I've worked in food service, especially sushi, so I understand being patient when they're busy or understaffed. I came in today on a nice date excited to wind down and enjoy some drinks and noticed they had only one server. Completely understandable and was not in a rush. What bothered me was watching her manager (who is also her father) continue to berate her in front of the entire restaurant. For about 20 minutes straight we watched him yell at her, tell her to figure it out, tell her to call her mom, and just be extremely rude to his staff / family. I don't typically write these but it was really disturbing watching all this while trying to enjoy a date. I hope this helps them work some issues out. read more

Came for my mom's birthday and we normally go to the Shoyu off of Mount Vernon. Service started off great, and got our drinks and food relatively quickly. However; my mom is particular about sauces on her rolls so asked for her 2 rolls to have the sauce on the side. When our food came out, one of her rolls was incorrect but said she was willing to try something new, the other covered in sauce. She didn't complain and offered it to my partner and I. When our waiter came back out, I asked my mom if she wanted to order the salmon collar and share it so she could eat more than just shrimp tempura and some edamame. When we ordered our waiter proceeds to say "I'm surprised you are still eating, you ate a lot of food." I immediately corrected him about the errors HE MADE and why we were ordering another dish. I was absolutely shocked and appalled, he made a comment about what he perceived she had ate when in reality she maybe took only 5 bites of food the entire day. I consider myself a bit of a "sushi connoisseur." So when I overheard someone at a bbq mention Shoyu Sushi, I started asking questions...What's your favorite roll? Is it expensive?? Is the rice purple??? She made it sound legit and even compared it to one of my new faves, Ahi Sushi. So the first chance I got to get my family on board, I did! I made a post on my social media page, asking friends to suggest which rolls we should try out, and with their help, we ordered The Playboy roll, the Jessica roll, the Goodbye Dracula roll, the Firestone Roll, the Super Poke roll and the miso soup. All were good, but my favorite was the Firestone roll. The onion straw topping was just the right amount and not overpowering! I also liked the fresh lemon slice on the Playboy Roll and the garlic sauce that came with the Goodbye Dracula roll. We ordered our food to go.
