You order at a counter where you pay and get a pager when your order is ready to pick up at an inside window, the place is small and on a corner but it is always our go to place when hungry after a Long Beach day in Galveston. I was pleasantly surprised by this place! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but you can't really go wrong with fried foods! They have a pretty varied menu so you have a lot of choices. The service is pretty quick and the workers are very cordial and polite. This obviously isn't a super high end fancy restaurant, but for what it is, it's pretty delicious. I got to try the gumbo and created my own platter of fried catfish (worth the extra $1) and crab balls with hush puppies, fries, and cole slaw. I really liked the catfish because it was a good size, but I loved the crab balls because it was just so delicious! I really wish I would have gotten more. It's a pretty big plate so would definitely keep you full. I also liked their fries since it was the nice and crispy. The hush puppies weren't too bad either. I would come back again the next time I'm going to Galveston. I will say that parking is limited, so carpool if you plan on going with a big group! read more

My friend and I traveled to Galveston this weekend for a wedding. Last night we searched the web for a good dinner spot, and were left with basically three options for seafood: helping the owners pay for prime Seawall real estate via inflated prices, boujee menu descriptions and dish plating, or Shrimp N Stuff. We are so glad we went inland and chose to eat at this cute little mom-and-pop shop, which offers both indoor and breezy outdoor seating. It also gives generous portions of dinner platters, with two sides, for a very fair pricepoint. The Fireballs are a must-have if boudin, cheese, and jalapeños are within your palate. Between the two platters we both had, we shared and tried just about everything this restuarant had to offer and have no complaints. The leftovers even microwaved well. Their tartar sauce is the best I've ever had. They use different batters depending on the dish (my oysters significantly varied from the fish and shrimp). Most everything is fried, so this place is not for the health-conscious or those seeking deluxe grilled seafood meals. I always thought nobody could even come close to the fried catfish at Bill's Catfish place on US Highway 70, west of Waurika, Oklahoma -- or my Uncle Chok in Johnson's Bayou in Louisiana. BUT I WAS WRONG. Shrimp N Stuff does justice to Catfish in the fillets used, the spices used in breading and frying the Catfish and in the Tarter Sauce. As always, we loved having lunch at Shrimp & Stuff. It's only a few blocks from my brother's Galveston home, in a rustic and historic neighborhood. Located well off the Seawall, so the crowds aren't so ungainly, but well worth the detour if you're looking for authenticity. The food is well done: shrimp of all preps, of course. I tried the gumbo for the first time, and others in my party ordered full courses of fried stuff, including onions rings. I finished mine, they did not. There's another S & S closer to the Strand (and the cruise ships), but I prefer the one on Avenue O at Mike Gaido Blvd (39th Street. Why does Galveston do this with their street names?) This is my favorite seafood restaurant in Galveston. The young man who took our order was awesome. Our food was ready quick. The boiled shrimp were fresh and absolutely delicious. I hate fried oysters with a passion, however I went ahead and tried a small bite from my husband's plate, the fried oyster was okay. Not bad. I enjoyed the coleslaw, simple,cold and a good subtle flavor. French fries were very yummy. We all loved the hush puppies and the boiled red potatoes were super soft and almost melted in my mouth. Shrimp N Stuff in it's house style building is where it is at! The patio is nice if you want to sit outside but not be in the sun. They have a second indoor dining space that opens when things get busy, so it's really nice and spaced out. Honestly I only get two things here because I can't help myself. 1) the fried oysters. So good! Pop those bad boys on a po'boy and BAM! Magic!! 2) the fried catfish. It's a weakness for me really. I love the crunch and the flakiness. The portion size is big too! I've been coming here for years, and they never disappoint. If you are expecting fancy sit down restaurant this is not the place for you. It's a walk up to the counter and place your order little hole in the wall, and they are a Galveston treasure. Mostly fried selections, but they always have their grease hot enough as the food is never soggy with it. They have a variety of choices with local seafood when in season. I always get the fried oysters, but have had the fried shrimp, fish and cray fish, and all of it is good. As stated by others their catfish is amazing, and I also tried their gumbo today for the first time, and it was delicious. Not too heavy handed with the heat, so casual spicy eaters can enjoy it too. My friends has the small shrimp plate, shrimp po-boy, and I had the shrimp salad and bowl of gumbo. They apparently recommened balsamic vinegarette for a popular salad dressing for the shirmp salad. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but the shrimp salad is like chicken salad (with mayo) on top of lettus and then mix it with balsamic vinegarette - "ummm no." The food was just ok to all of us. If we came back to the island would this be a stop? - No. If someone wanted me to come with them to eat here? - Depends, who is paying and is everything else closed? .... Ah yes the venerable Shrimp and Stuff. A Galveston island classic that has been around since when my Dad was growing up. Many many years ago now. Surprised I hadn't done a review of this place yet. There's all sorts of seafood places in Galveston. This place stands out and is one of the best. They have very good seafood for a reasonable price. This is one of those places where the locals go. Those who are in the know about good stuff at a good price. Not flashy or touristy, just good food. Of course in the age of online reviews more and more people find out about good places such as this, and there we go the place gets all the attention it deserves. There's two locations one downtown and this one on Avenue O. This is the original location. I've had food from here countless times over the years. Never had a thing that wasn't good. It's always good. I tend to gravitate towards the shrimp salad po-boy. Bread gives me some tummy troubles, but if it's a weekend and I'm feeling adventurous I'll sometimes risk it and have something with bread. The shrimp salad po-boy (also available as a shrimp salad with no bread) is loaded with shrimp and veggies. It's about $12. It goes heavy on the shrimp, they load you up good. You'll be full with delicious shrimpity goodness in no time. All their po-boy sandwiches are great so you can't go wrong with any of them. This time I also noticed they have added coconut shrimp to the menu. Not many places on the island do coconut shrimp. As I already mentioned their portion size is also very good for the price. If you want to avoid the crowds seeing as the place is packed on the weekends; you can call in your order in advance and they have a pick up window on the side of the building you can walk up to and they'll notice you out there, they'll open the window and take your payment and give you your order. Galveston is a wonderful island with several gems such as this restaurant. As I've mentioned in other reviews I may be partial to Galveston seeing as I grew up there. But there really is a lot to love on the island. Such as this place. Give it a try. read more
