My husband and I had dinner here on a Saturday evening recently. When I called to make a reservation for 6:30, I was told to be done eating by 8. Found that a bit odd. upon entrance it look like a very classy location this was not the case.We went in they didn't have paper menus it looked like it was gas station sushi at its best it tasted like gas station sushi at its best the service was horrible everything tasted like Chinese food do not go here. They offered a free course $25 meal the preparation looked impressive but it was about a quarter of the size of most normal sushi rolls and they offered this bowl filled with rice and some vegetables that was tasteless. We've come here twice and it's the best sushi I've ever had! The fish is very fresh and the rolls are unique. Our favorite appetizer so far has been the crispy rice fatty tuna. And my two favorite rolls have been the Shumi roll, which is kind of broiled on the top, and the salmon ponzu roll, which tastes very fresh and kind of citrusy. I went to the place with my boyfriend with high expectations and this place definitely exceeded them. The fatty tuna on crispy rice appetizer was so tasty and cooked so well. We ordered the salmon mozzarella app, chef's choice of sashimi and sushi platter, katsu curry dinner, and tempura dinner. Everything I ordered tasted so good and the service was fast, especially considering how busy they were on a Friday night. After we left, we already talking about our next visit. I came here for their lunch special and it was totally worth it! I got the sushi combo, shumani and yellowtail roll. All very very fresh and good. I cannot deal with anything fishy and I was happy and relieve that I was able to eat everything they offered. I think for dinner it gets pretty crowded so I would suggest calling in ahead. Wow, the food at Shumi just blew me away from start to finish!! My girlfriend (who has been here and raved about the food) and I had the $15 lunch special. First, the atmosphere was casual but elegant with tablecloths during the lunch service. After ordering, we were immediately served soup, salad and shumai. The soup was hot, the salad was fresh and the shumai was lightly browned & crispy with tasty filling. Next, we were served a platter of 6 pieces of sushi which were beautifully presented and more importantly, fresh and delicious! When we were served the third and final course, I literally burst out laughing! The third course was a big bowl of salmon, green & red peppers, onions and mushrooms over rice. The amount of food that was included in the lunch special was crazy!!! Not only is the lunch special a great value, but the food at Shumi is as good as any great sushi restaurant in NYC! Three of us went to Shumi for lunch on President's Day. We each ordered the sushi and sashimi lunch deluxe special. One word...Phenomenal!!! Every piece was so fresh. We also shared the tempura entree as well. Again every piece was crispy and crunchy. You could taste the shrimp and vegetables from the batter. So good. WOULD NOT SUGGEST THIS FOR ANYONE!!! The service was terrible and way overpriced . Our sever (the manager) paid little to no attention to us. Our food took an hour to come out and ended up not even being what we ordered. All the tables around us got there food before us even though the got seated after us. Keep in mind we only ordered 3 rolls and rice. Instead of getting offered a discount we had argue with them and ended up only getting $3 taken off. There was no apologies given. To top thing they forgot to give us our card back with our check! Again no apologies definitely not a surprise. Overall this place needs to clean up there act and hire a new manager. Customer service should be a top priority, your not going to find it here. Do your self a favor and eat somewhere else. read more

Really enjoy coming to this restaurant. They serve the same quality of sashimi and sushi you would get in Manhattan but for a more affordable price. I had $100 premium omakase, wife had app and main course. Place was not busy. We sat at counter. They brought out wife's main course before she was even 1/2 way through app. We expected gourmet service, not family meal. Also, we sat at counter so no where to put her main course and waiter was not very concerned. Her main course (tonkatsu) was thin and dry. I had premium omakase, no uni, no wagyu beef, no mirugai, no amaebi, no premium stuff except a piece of toro, chutoro, and blue fin maguro. I have to give the chef credit though for being creative with the sushi, he used a lot of diff kinds of sauces and accompanied some sushi with ankimo. In summary, the sushi I had was good, cooked food so so, way too expensive for so called premium omakase, and no desert!!! Will stay with SakuraBana instead. read more

After reading that Shumi was selected as the best sushi restaurant in NJ, we made a reservation for Fri dinner. Ridgewood is well known for many great restaurants especially being BYOB. Restaurant was packed with patrons. When we were about to be seated, waiter told us that there's 1hr 15min limit. What? Never heard nor this requirement was posted anywhere. We ordered yellowtail kama and sushi delux & sushi/sashimi delux. Wanted to try them before possibly coming back for omakase. Strange that there's delux option with no regular offering. Yellowtail came first. Then soon after the main dishes and no salad nor soup. Waitress was not too friendly. As main dish came with either soup or salad, we tried one of each. Since the waitress felt bad, she gave us both each. Yellowtail kama was good but you can tell it wasn't cooked fresh, but frozen as the meat crumbled, not flaked. Prices were little high but very reasonable for the # of pieces offered. When we saw our dishes, we knew why. Pieces were tiny and very thin. Pieces were about 1/2 to 1/4 the size of other sushi restaurant. Fish were fresh but again very small. Small fly landed on one of the sushi. I wanted to complain but my wife begged me not to. Not sure if the tating was based on only Omakase but dining there did not indicate the rating. Bad service, over priced for the food and not the quality of the "best" sushi restaurant in NJ. read more

Really really really disappointed with our meal here. We have been a few times. Quality of the food is very good. The is just horrendous. We had a 6:30 reservation at the sushi bar. No menus you have to scan everything in your phone. The server was all over us as soon as we sat down asking for our order. I told him we needed a minute. A minute later he was back. We ordered. Our salads were out within 2mins of ordering. Our appetizers were out within 5 mins. While we are eating our salads. My son ordered a few rolls, I had the sushi sashimi combo. Those were served while we were still eating out apps. Our dinners arrived at 6:45pm. So literally within sitting st 6:30, by 6:45 we had our entire meals brought to us. I felt like we were in a factory just cranking out food and customers. It was not relaxing or enjoyable at all. Everything was rushed snd robotic. I just had a very disappointing experience at Shumi in Ridgewood. We have always enjoyed the food and this was one of the restaurants that we ordered take out from regularly throughout the pandemic in order to support this local business. We have done in-person dining twice in the past 2 months. Both times the service was terrible. Tonight we were there for almost two hours. My son was served and we waited 45 minutes but I never received my dinner sushi roll. I finally told them to forget the roll and to give me the check. I left hungry and don't plan to return. We just got the omakase with Chris. It was amazing. We were first timers for the omakase and it blew our minds. The fish was so good and it was really cool to see the difference in the tastes of the same fish from different regions of the world or different cuts off of the same fish. Went to Shumi on Friday and got the omakase special. It was different. They gave us 18 pieces of sushi, miso soup I think with 3 pieces of tuna roll it was tasty. Have been 2x - not going to leave Sakura Bana for it - but it's good. Sushi is expensive but quality. It's the kind of place that you take your asshole brother in law from NYC to show them the burbs have places that resemble a NYC atmosphere. The room is sleek for sure - and the sushi good - but it is a bit much with the way you are seated and order from the host with the almighty IPAD. They are trying real hard to be hip. Had a fantastic dinner here with a close friend last night! The food was great and the ambience was really nice! My only complaint is that I wish the portions were slightly bigger! Also be mindful that you may have to wait a few minutes even after making a reservation because the restaurant is quite small and fills up very quickly! Because of the size of the restaurant and the amount of people, it was very loud so it was hard to hear the other person across the table. Our server, Aaron, was great! Was there for wife's birthday. We decided to order the omakase special which was $140 per person. When we were there, it was not at busy hour; the wait staff was very attentive. We feel the whole experience is lacking for omakase sitting at the counter, no difference then sitting at a table. Usually when sitting at the counter, the chef would communicate with the customer on the sushi being served; I am wondering if this might be language gap where the chef is not be able to speak English that well. Secondly, the rice in the sushi was lacking. The rice seems a bit hard and not enough vinegar. When picking up the sushi, the rice fell apart easy. Lastly, we feel that there is no difference then eating at the buffet, quantity over quality because there were a lot of sushi pieces, but there was nothing that special about this omakase. I wish there were dessert included in the omakase or maybe the restaurant would pay attention to the Open table message that this was for special occasion. I don't think there would be next time for us, even if the price is for $50 for the same omakase special, we feel we rather go to all you can eat sushi elsewhere. People should still try the restaurant because they have more good review for a reason, but maybe the special omakase did not meet our expectations for the price. read more

I also thought that we would have had a more personal experience with the Chef. The cost was 140.00 Per person. The chef's working behind the counter did not look like happy people. Definitely a bit pricier than the other Japanese restaurants in town; a bit much for one in a small suburban town like this.
