What a joke this place is the service and manger name Jon is a total let down total unprofessional customer service barley surprised he gets to be called a manager. Most of the reviews here are filtered so only the make believe good reviews make it the rest go in to a buy back program. The sushi here is overrated it's not worth a hundred dollars for 5 pieces the appetizers are overpriced as well for only 30 bucks you get 2 dumplings and a small side field greens. I think the most effective way for me to express my opinion of Shumi is to say this: I have had sushi at some of the most renowned places in the US, from NYC to Vegas to Seattle to Miami and many places in between, and the quality of Shumi's fish beats almost every one. Not everything is perfect, I admit - apps and salads are good but not extraordinary, but the toro and the eel - the EEL - are absolutely exceptional. For the price, it's some of best sushi in the NY/NJ area. In my personal opinion, the quality of a sushi joint is in the eel, and Shumi's actually is the best I have had in the US. If you ask the waitstaff what selections are freshest, they never steer you wrong; they stay informed about the daily deliveries, and they are as a rule polished and professional. In short; I live in Brooklyn, and I'm totally willing to drive out to Ridgewood for sushi at Shumi. read more

Very disappointing!!! We ordered take out from this restaurant the sushi was sweaty looking. I ordered a rainbow roll the yellowtail was white, it should be pinkish. The tuna had a horrible flavor , I couldn't eat the roll because the coloring wasn't right. We also ordered soft shell crab roll, that looked as though it had been sitting for a few days! The Salmon which is normally orange was white, I have NEVER had salmon with big white spots on it!!! The chicken teriyaki was horrible. This was a big waste of money. Wow! My husband and I were blown away by Shumi! After living in NYC and Chicago, we have had our fair share of impeccable meals and service, especially Japanese cuisine. We were planning on having a decent meal, based upon the menu and location BUT we were blown away by the Chefs tasting menu- it has "big city taste" as my husband says. Less is More...a lesson that the chefs at Shumi should learn. Beautiful decor, good service, high quality fish, but the chefs dressed the sushi with flavors that overpower the delicious fish. A piece of yellowtail had strong pickled onions on it, horse mackerel had too much wasabi, spicy squid had too much wasabi, scallops had too much wasabi, Shumi roll had too much sauce...you get the idea. If the chefs cut back on the dressing I think this could be a solid sushi option in Bergen county. Until then I will stick with local favorites like Johnny Roll Sushi in Montvale. read more

I've been here since it opened and have been back during covid and even now. The quality of fish at this establishment has always been top notch. Dave the owner is very attentive and brings great energy to the room - makes sure to engage with customers. From the soft shell crab sushi roll all the way down the Miyazaki Beef everything was delicious. Service was very good and they were on top of everything. We saw them cut the fish at the bar area. Now let me get to why I gave them 2 stars. We also ordered the ramen, my ramen had 2 slices of pork and when I bit into it they were a bit on the cold side. I thought maybe they used pre-cooked pork from the fridge, but I was also thinking that this better not be under-cooked pork. Considering we were eating at a upscale place like this, you would assume they know how to cook and handle pork. Well, I was wrong an hour later, I was sick to my stomach. On top of that the ramen is pretty expensive and it's just average even if the pork was cooked properly. Chris is one of the best omakase sushi chefs in NJ. Unfortunately, we were given a proxy our last time out, thus, he wasn't as good. Very nice chef, but he got a few of our requests wrong, i.e. we got uni after requesting none, and we re-ordered a few amazing pieces, i.e. the chu toro, aji, etc. but he made them w/ different toppings the second time around. Not sure why, as it wasn't as good as the first one. However, Chris stepped in and gave us the last few pieces on the house, which was very nice of him. Overall the regular omakase could use a few more "standard" pieces, i.e. seared salmon, scallop, etc., and a bit less "exotic" ones, monk fish liver, shrimp heads, etc. Been there several times and will definitely go back. read more

I was recommended here by a colleague, I was forewarned that service was dismal. And it was, reason for the mediocre rating. Sushi and sashimi here is excellent. It's fresh, light and perfect that soy sauce isn't needed. Fluke, uni and saba is amazing. It's comparable to NYC pricing but the food is outstanding so I don't mind paying premium price. While the food was ravishing, service was not. Here are the reasons for the 2 stars rather than 5 stars. The decor is simple, clean and very minimalist. Service does not equal the premium price they are charging. Menus are torn and stained. Most seem very confused and unsure of things. Perhaps they need better training. Water goes unfilled, nobody checks on the tables too. There were a few mishaps with our order. The person that takes your order is not the person who brings your food or drinks. It felt like a college fraternity, not an upscale restaurant. The servers were more interested in socializing with each other rather than customers. They were loud and I found that to be very unprofessional. Also while I am all for self expression, I have tattoos myself, just none on my sleeve. I felt my servers having sleeve tattoos was dive bar-ish, not a place I equate with upscale. I would definitely do take out if I wanted sushi, even though it's best eaten at the restaurant. Shumi by far is the best sushi in the area. My husband and I moved from the city four years ago and have never been able to find high quality sushi until now. The staff is amazing and we are treated like family every time we dine there. The prices are super reasonable for the quality of fish they serve. Not many places can say they have fish flown in from Japan. To top it off the Ramen is to die for! David and his staff truly take pride in serving the best of the best and it shows! read more

I can only speak for the lunch offerings, but it's a hard pass for me. The katsu curry came out lukewarm and mushy since the curry sauce was already poured all over the cutlets. The cutlets were not crunchy, and there was more fat than meat in each piece. The rice that came with it was dry and hard. The chirashi regular was nothing special. Sure, it was fresh, but definitely overpriced for the size of the meal. The wait was unexpectedly long for two simple dishes, and the restaurant was mostly empty at the time. The waitstaff were sufficiently nice, but all in all, there's nothing special about the lunch here. Sakura Bana is the better bet. read more

The food was not as good in the past and when I questioned why the Ramen we ordered was taking longer than our sushi order the waiter rudely advised us there's only one chef in the back... 3 sushi chefs at the bar and only 1 chef for all other orders in the back? Excellent sushi spot in Ridgewood. This is not your usual suburban neighborhood sushi joint for California Rolls. This is a real sushi focused restaurant that would not be out of place in Manhattan. We have not yet tried the Omakase there but plan to at some point. read more

Terrible customer service. Made a reservation thru Open Table and received confirmation on 2/1/19 for Shumi Japanese Restaurant in Ridgewood NJ, for this Friday 2/22/19, @ 8pm for a party of 8. The reservation was for my daughter's 16th birthday. I called the restaurant this evening to see about adding one person. Not only did they inform me that they could not add a person, they told me that they could not take a party of 8 on Saturdays. They expressed that this was their weekend policy. I have no problem with their policy. However, if I did not contact them tonight, either I would have walked in there with my original party of 8 and they would not have seated us, or they would have contacted me on Thursday to let me know they could not accommodate our party on Saturday. This is completely unacceptable and their response was very insensitive. When I asked them why they didn't contact me sooner, so I could make alternate plans, the response I received was that they were too busy. I have dined there before, and while the food was good, the customer service was below average. I will never dine there again. read more
