    The Happy Friday roll
    Adele P.

Fantastic! Friends recommended this place and I am so glad I went. A close friend and I were meeting for dinner and we both love sushi, so we decided to try this place. The first thing I noticed about it was that there was a worm, welcoming environment and everybody who worked there seemed like they really wanted to be there. We were quickly seated in a booth and giving menus, and they brought us hot tea. Everything on the extensive menu looked fabulous! It was hard to make a choice. I eventually chose the Happy Friday roll. It was tuna, salmon, and yellow tail, avocado inside, with white tuna on the top with Chef's Special mango sauce. It was phenomenal and served on a cute little boat. My friend had the tricolor sushi assortment and said it was great. Everything was extremely fresh and tasty. This restaurant is close to work so I will definitely be back. Loved this place so much!

Food was fresh and absolutely delicious

Parking. Small location. Friendly staff. Food is delicious. Ordering a bunch of sushi rolls and eating family style is the best.

Safe to say I'm obsessed with this restaurant. The best sushi around, quick service with both to go orders and dine in. Love that dine in is byob as well. Love all of the sushi rolls I've tried, salmon sashimi is super fresh and delicious, tempura apps and salad are always crowd pleasers and love the special rolls I've tried (although there are almost too many to choose from). Definitely would recommend to anyone in the area.

Very friendly staff. The restaurant is very clean. We visited for the lunch special. There are much more options for the lunch special than I'm accustomed. I chose the three roll special. I had a salmon, salmon avocado, and salmon mango. They include both miso soup and a ginger salad, so no need to pick just one. The ginger was top notch. The sushi rolls had a great rice ratio, as I don't like too much rice. The fish was fresh. I had the salmon mango last as my "dessert". My wife had the yellowtail mango and said it was a better "dessert" because the fish tasted sweeter. The staff were very quick during lunch. Quick to take our order and quick to bring the check. They also were constantly clearing every little small item off our table. I don't throw this around often, but it was the kind of service I'd expect to see at a Michelin star restaurant. We'll definitely return. I'll probably get the same thing again, no regrets here. sk tl;dr yum yum for my tum tum

My husband and I came here for a sushi date and to try this place out. It was great! The service was wonderful and attentive. The inside was small but very charming. It was so crazy busy as well with people coming to pick up take out orders and after eating there we know why! The sushi was great and tasted extremely fresh. They had an insane amount of different types of special rolls that are sure to please everyone with different wrapping include soybean paper which I had on a valentine roll and it was one of the best sushi rolls I have ever had. I would definitely recommend this place for a very casual sushi date and would recommend over and over for take out which my husband and I will be getting again soon!

Much more than expected. Sushi was fresh and great customer service. Price is pretty good too. Place is not that big.

THE GOOD ----------------…read more+ Solid sushi, nothing spectacular, but hits the spot. ++++ Sushi Regular fish was relatively fresh on the sushi pieces, 8 in total. It also came with a choice of a regular roll. ++++ Spicy Maki Combo, which consisted of any 3 spicy rolls, did not taste or look like spicy rolls. They just looked like regular rolls, but they were still decent. There were only 4 spicy rolls to choose from though, of which I chose the Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon and Spicy Yellowtail. ++++ Chicken Udon was surprisingly VERY good. Even though it was just a simple chicken udon, the chicken was quite flavorful and tender. Broth was your typical miso broth/soup. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Waiters can be a little bit more enthusiastic, but food arrived pretty quick. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. Blu Sushi is the perfect mix of deliciousness, affordability, and fantastic service. I've gone there for my lunch around three times these past two weeks and each time I've had a wonderful experience. Their lunch special is super affordable. You can get 2 rolls for the less than I spend for one at many of the other restaurants in Ridgewood. However, despite that, it honestly tastes the best out of many of the places I've gone to. Also, if you are up for spending more, they have a fantastic selection of appetizers and special rolls that you can try again (I recommend the dynamite shrimp). When I go, I normally get the 2 roll option from the lunch menu. Typically, I have the spicy salmon and the spicy tuna rolls when I order that. Regarding those rolls, they are first and foremost delicious. You can tell that fresh their fish is and how much time and dedication they put into their sushi with each bite. Furthermore, they are spicy--but not too spicy. When you have them you are able to enjoy every aspect of the roll without being completely overwhelmed by the spice. Additionally, they add something crunchy to the rolls which take them from just a tasty lunch to a full experience. Most importantly though, the service and ambiance is fantastic. Every time I've been there I've only been treated with kindness and consideration. They are very willing to talk with you about their dishes, share some interesting facts about it (like how they came up with the dynamite shrimp), and more. But the best part about it is that they remember you. That honestly meant a lot to me. I know that this whole review was a lot of me ranting, but I honestly mean it. If you are looking for a nice, quaint, delicious, affordable, and hospitable meal--Blu Sushi is the place for you.

Fish was very fresh though and presentation was excellent. + Spicy Salmon, Spicy Yellowtail, Spicy Cooked White Fish - Shocked at how good the rolls actually were. There was only 1-2 layers of rice, at most, around the sushi and there was a lot of fish filling for the rolls. Fish was very fresh and delicious. Also, once again, presentation of the entree was excellent. THE SERVICE ------------------- + Friendly waitresses throughout the staff. + Food came out fairly quickly. THE SURROUNDINGS ------------------------------- + Not a huge restaurant, but spacious enough with a few tables for 4 and a few tables for 6. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Came in at around 5:45 PM on a summer Friday evening and it was busy already. We didn't have resys, but some groups did. Assuming they were able to squeeze us in before the dinner resy groups filed in because the restaurant was at capacity by the time we left at 7ish.

Yet in many Japanese restaurants, I've found that no matter when I revisit and order their omakase, the dishes, from appetizers to sushi and sashimi, all remain the same. Thankfully, this was not the case at Shumi. Here, the chefs truly strive to create edible masterpieces. I had the pleasure of enjoying innovative appetizers along with nigiri that simply melted in my mouth. Shumi's omakase was once priced at $150 per person, but in a thoughtful move to accommodate their customers, they adjusted it to $95 per person without compromising the quality of their fish. I will note that the pieces are smaller, but they still deliver the freshest taste. The staff is exceptionally gracious, dedicated to ensuring a wonderful dining experience. They are quick to replenish your tea or fill your glass as soon as it's half empty. I did, however, find the restaurant a bit chilly, and the music was a little too loud, making it difficult to hear the staff as they described each type of fish. For those who followed Master Chef Kunihiko "Ike" Aikasa from the original Shumi in Somerville, he sold that business before opening this new location in Ridgewood, which has been open since 2017. Here, he has partnered with owner David Seo. The aesthetic of the new restaurant remains clean and bright. In a competitive town like Ridgewood, where locals expect restaurants to bring their A-game, Shumi has obviously stood the test of time. I wish them many more years of excellence. Rating scale: Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Cleanliness: 4.5/5 Food: 5/5 Overall: I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I rounded it up to 5 stars.

However, it did get pretty busy around 7 PM, but there were still available seats. For a restaurant in this area, it was pretty big with quite a few tables inside. The menu was very typical of any local neighborhood Japanese restaurant - Japanese soups and salads, appetizers, entrees like teriyaki dishes, noodles/udons, rice entrees and lots of different sushi and sushi rolls. Nothing on the menu will blow you away or be surprising, but it'll satisfy your Japanese food craving if that's what you're seeking. Our family ordered Edamame and Fried Gyoza to start and both were good. The Gyoza was actually better than I anticipated, arriving at our table hot and crispy. For entrees, we ordered our kids the Salmon Teriyaki, which was solid. There was a lot of teriyaki sauce on the salmon and the salmon was not overly cooked or dry, so that was a plus. I ordered 3 regular sushi rolls - Spicy Crab, Spicy Yellowtail and Spicy Salmon - and all were good and pretty much what I expected. My wife ordered the Sushi Regular, which came with 8 pieces of sushi and a California Roll. Once again, all good. Nothing that was off about any of it. We also ordered a Nabeyaki Udon, but I didn't get to try any of it, however, our kids ate a lot of it, which was a good sign that it was good. Like I said, there was nothing that was bad here and everything was good, but nothing is spectacular either. If you're just seeking Japanese food/sushi and need to get your fix on, the food at Kumo will hit that spot.
