Ok I guess I am gonna be a negative one on this one, and I hate to be the one to be so negative - but got to be honest with what we experienced. First thing first if a restaurant mentions on their door and their website/Google maps that they are open till 11:30 PM - i totally imagine that they will be open till at least near that time. We were late, but life and baby does not work on a timetable, but knowing that we can still go out and celebrate was important. We reached the restaurant at 10:22 PM and were immediately told last call in 8 minutes. Weird, which restaurant does last call an hour before. Next we were absolutely rushed throughout the dinner. Again, we understand us being late and if the staff needed to leave early, just let us know to come back again and we would have been more than happy to go somewhere else, rather than plate full of food being tried to be cleaned up. Just change the restaurant timing if you cannot abide by your own time, we would not have chosen it as such! Sounds pretty bad to complain about the time when we came in at 10:22 but we came in then BECAUSE their times mentioned they were open for an hour more which any reasonable person would say is enough! Food was extremely mid - having eaten at many MANY sushi restaurants now, and knowing what we get for what we pay for, maybe it was because the staff wanted us gone The Bluefin Tuna sashimi was great, Yellowtail was very mid (like felt "slimy"which is a weird feeling to have when eating sushi lol), my wife obsesses over Salmon and this time she was being very generous to me with her pieces lol. The double pleasure roll was pretty good, but came too late to the story. Ambience is great. Staff was decent, except our server who was hovering hard. I totally understand you want us out of there, but just dont sit anyone if that is the case - dropping 100+ dollars to have that experience does not feel right. I will stop, I always read these reviews and imagine a crumudgeon somewhere angry and writing this, but this is just a warning to anyone who was gonna take a late night dinner option here! read more

Waiter was very kind, but very disappointed with two things. They don't offer creative custom rolls or offer cucumber wrapped rice less options. All good there but when my daughter ordered the crème brûlée it came out with lemon ice and lemon topping, she doesn't like lemon. We asked to get the crème brûlée without the lemon on it and the manager said we would need to buy another. I was surprised as we had purchased an appetizer, 4 rolls and a dessert. And had we known that the dessert would have lemon on it we would have declined that combo. Sashimi was tasty, roll options are mostly boring basics. If you want a healthy fresh "fish forward" roll they don't really have it. Tons of fried or cream cheese with crab stick options. That's not really sushi. Edamame was good. read more

We went to Shun for our Wedding anniversary dinner and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there. First off we started o with Premium Wakatake Demon Slayers Junmai and a Manhattan cocktail and we were blown way with the quality of the Junmai and the expertise with which the Manhattan was concocted ! We started off with the Uni+A5 Wagyu sushi and while it was slightly pricey, the quality of the Uni and Wagyu more than made up for the price. It was one of best dishes we had that we evening! Next we got the Sashimi premium tray and let me tell you, the next 20 minutes we were oohing and swooning over each sliver of fish they had served which had come from Japan and many other countries around the world. Next we ordered their Pork Belly skewers which were glazed so beautifully that each piece brought a burst of never experienced before flavors. Certainly a gem of a dish! Next we got the sizzling A5 Wagyu over rice which as hand tossed table side (video added) The flavors and textures in this dish left us in raptures!! Wife wanted some more Sashimi , so we got the Itoyori - Threadfin Bream and the Muki Hotate - Hokkaido Scallops, all of which was to die for !! And to close out we got the Yuzu Crème Brûlée , the perfect closure to such a fantastic meal !! We want to Thank Melvin for his wonderful recommendations and table side service and the most wonderful conversation that we had with him. Lets talk about how amazing SHUN is. We kind of went here on a whim and was pleasantly surprised by the phenomenal food amd service. Upon walking in, there was a full restaurant with a beautiful open kitchen. We got to sit outside, which had TVs and a view of the large screen in the area. Outside had heaters to keep you warm. Each item we ordered had a blast of flavor and you could tell each ingredient was throughly thought through. I couldn't say there was one dish that I would improve because it was all perfect. Went here to get our sushi fix and upon walking in i was definitely impressed with the classy black decor of the restaurant. Service was really good, all the waiters were very attentive. We got the crispy shrimp which i would skip for next time. The crunch and the flavor was good but the shrimp itself was overcooked and the sauce just tasted like sriracha mayo, it wasn't anything special. Their pork belly miso skewer was surprisingly what stood out the most during our meal. the 8 piece omakase was good, but nothing mindblowing. I would've appreciated a written down description of each flavor pairing as the waiter just told us everything in one go as she presented the plate of sushi for us. Went here for my dad's birthday and I have to say was impressed with the place overall! Very nice restaurant for special events and date nights. We went during lunch so it was not as busy. I definitely liked the decor and ambiance of the place. For sure upscale than most sushi restaurants in the area and conveniently located next by 121 McKinney. We ordered an assortment of foods (see pics) and sampled each one. All were super tasty!! For not being that busy, I would have to say that the sushi took some time to get out but we did order quite a bit. The chirashi presentation was pretty cool as well so I guess worth the wait if you're into that like I am lol. It was my first time but my parents have been there a few times and like this place. Great service and everything was absolutely delicious. We started with a California roll and the fried green beans which were perfect. We've then ordered the A5 Wagyu fried rice, which was everybody at the table's favorite thing. The meat was absolutely delicious and tender in the fried rice. The sundae roll and the tempura shrimp roll were also very good and fresh. The service was always very fast, friendly and attentive. We always had everything we needed. My visit to Shun was a treat! The decor and interior are classy and elevated. Our server was wonderful and was very helpful in answering any questions we had. Miso pork belly (8.5/10): The meat was marinated well, with juicy thick cuts of meat. Uni (10/10): Can't go wrong with uni Sizzling eel rice (8/10): Very delicious! The hot stone bowl elevated this dish. Typically with eel dishes, the fish is drowned in eel sauce. This was great because you could really taste the eel. However, we would have preferred either less rice or more eel since the ratio feels unbalanced. Sashimi premium (7/10): The fish selection was good, eight types of fish for two people! There was uni included for this price point as well which was a nice surprise. My main criticism for Shun is regarding the sashimi premium, particularly the smoked salmon, scallop, and mackerel. Typically, mackerel is not served in a chef special because it's a bit controversial. I was surprised they served it in the first place compared to sea bream or yellowtail. Same goes for the smoked salmon. The scallop given to us was merely half a scallop; We expected each serving to be a full piece, butterflied. The scallop was delicious, but it felt skimpy to only give half per person. I would definitely come back to Shun because of its great location and good quality sushi. This place is popping up all over my social media so we came here for our post Valentines celebration. We order a good variety of food and were impressed by it all. I couldn't determine a favorite dish bc they were all so awesome. I only could decide that of all the dishes I only had ONE dish I could decide that I didn't like as much and it's not to say it wasn't good, it just wasn't my jam. The dish that surprised me was the eggplant. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as the others since it's "just" eggplant, but it was very well executed. Service was amazing! Everything was excellent, but if you come here for one thing let it be the sushi - this is the freshest, best quality raw fish I've had so far in the DFW area. Deliciously done nigiri and a beautiful chirashi bowl were our standouts of the night! We also had the wagyu rice - also delicious, but nothing crazy in my opinion. Chef Kenny invited us to come back and give them another try saying they'd reworked some of the dishes based on my feedback. It took us a while to come back since we don't often get date nights w/out the kids, but we finally made it back this weekend and I am SO GLAD we did. We were blown away and now we both totally get all hype around Chef Kenny. Every dish has been perfected and each piece of sushi was presented already dressed so no soy sauce needed - all we can say is WOW. Here's what we had second time around: - SALMON YUZU MUSTARD - 10/10 a beautiful combination of flavors and textures...the truffle was fresh this time and that made all the difference - SHIROMI TIRADITO - 10/10 Beautiful presentation and the taste was clean, balanced and refined. Loved the crispy texture of the Japanese rice cracker and hubby loved the truffle ponzu so much he picked up the bowl and drank it. Not a drop went to waste! - BACK9DALLAS ROLL: 10/10 an explosion of flavor and textures - BLUE FIN OTORO SUSHI (w/ truffle infused caviar): 10000/10 our favorite of the night! My husband and I stopped by SHUN by Yama for our anniversary this past Wednesday! I'd heard that Chef Kenny (previously of Shoyo) was the executive chef and I've been to some other Yama locations and enjoyed the casual vibe, so we were excited to try out this new concept. We arrived at 5PM for our reservation and were promptly seated. Service was great; our drinks (I got the lychee martini and my husband got the mint gimlet) came out quickly and were very refreshing. Happy to report they don't skimp on the alcohol ;) And the staff were super prompt with refilling our waters when they were getting low. The menu is quite extensive and we wanted to try a little bit of everything. After perusing the options, we ended up going with the following: - Kurage tako wasabi: loved the refreshing crunch of the jellyfish and the overall flavor of this dish! The tako was a bit chewy but I feel like that's pretty common for tako wasabi so it didn't bother me too much. Sesame seeds added a nice texture and aroma as well. - Hamachi crudo: we were intrigued by this dish because of the inclusion of pesto, but it honestly fell pretty flat. The raw yellowtail was fine, but there wasn't much flavor to the dish at all, and the sliced radish pieces overwhelmed the fish and were also strangely bitter. - Spider roll: we wanted to try a roll and we love softshell crab so we went with this one. To be honest the eel sauce was so savory that it really overwhelmed every other flavor in the roll, and the softshell crab wasn't super flavorful or crunchy either, even though I could tell it was fried. - Assorted nigiri: all of the nigiri from the Toyosu menu was very fresh and delicious. My favorites were the ones that were lightly seared (kinmedai, scallop adductor) but the hotate, shima aji, and kasugodai were also excellent. The nori wrapped around the ikura nigiri really suffered from not being served immediately - it was incredibly chewy from touching the moisture in the rice too long. Maybe this wouldn't be as much of an issue if we'd sat at the sushi bar? But as it was presented, the tough nori was really difficult to get past. And the anago was unfortunately VERY overcooked - super dry and chewy, and overwhelmed by eel sauce as well. I was shocked by how bad that piece was! Shoutout to the sushi rice here, though - well seasoned and not too mushy. We were still a bit hungry after the flight of nigiri came out, so we ended up adding the jidori yakitori and the green bean tempura. I'm so glad we did because they were some of our favorite bites of the night! The green bean tempura was perfectly battered, very light and crunchy and not greasy at all. I do wish that there had been more traditional tempura dipping sauce on the side along with the truffle aioli, since the aioli got a bit heavy halfway through the dish, but I definitely recommend ordering this. And the chicken skewers were super juicy and had a wonderful char from the grill; I'd love to return to get that again and try more of the grilled items. Since it was our anniversary, we were also surprised with a complementary dessert! The matcha ice cream was excellent, very creamy with a strong tea flavor, and I really enjoyed the textural contrast from the chocolate crumbles and shortbread topping. There were some misses in the dishes we ordered, but overall we had a good time and I would return if friends wanted to come try it out in the future! read more

The first thing you notice when you walk into SHUN is that it is a nice place - a really nice place! The second thing is that there is a serious focus on customer service. We (my wife and I) walked in with no reservation. We were given a table, but informed that service was somewhat delayed due to the unexpectedly large number of customers, but they would do their best to take care of us - 3 different staff members gave us that message and apologized for it. I requested a glass of wine and when it did not appear before our first dishes arrived, I inquired as to the status of my order. A very apologetic young lady got it taken care of immediately - hard to ask for more than that. The SHUN staff is impressive - they radiate customer service. At one point, I managed to launch one of my chopsticks off the table. As I was trying to figure out how I was going to eat my sushi with one chopstick, I saw one of the staff (not our waitress) go by and I raised my hand - it would have been easy for her to overlook me, but she immediately stopped and asked how she could be of service. A new set of chopsticks was quickly acquired. The most important part - of course, is the food. When you look at the menu it becomes very clear that this is not just another sushi place - they have a wide range of eclectic offerings that all sounded very interesting (not what you typically expect). We ordered the Shishito peppers, the octopus salad (Tako Kani Sansai), the miso pork belly skewers, the Hudson Valley Foie Gras skewer, the Louisiana roll, and the Chief's Choice Omakase sushi with the Tres Leche Matcha for desert. Fantastic food! I was a big fan of the peppers - they were a little too spicy for my wife but she still ate 3-4 of them. The octopus salad exceeded our expectations - very unusual, but tasty. Sometimes a bit hard to identify what you were eating, but it tasted great! The pork belly skewers were a good value and what you would expect - Great! The Hudson Valley Foie Gras skewer was a big chunk of grilled liver (at least that is what it looked like to me). As I am not a fan, I let my wife enjoy it - she really liked it and was bummed that they were out of the scallop/foi gras skewers. The Louisiana roll was good - I would order it again, but after I tried some of the other offerings. The Chief's Choice Omakase sushi was a good move - they were not so large that you couldn't eat them all, and each one was excellent in it's own way. Very tasty, but I will probably try the SHUN Bara Chirashi next time (and there will definitely be a next time). The Tres Leche Matcha was eclectic, but my wife really liked it (I don't do deserts). The bottom line is that we are very happy to have such a high quality restaurant so close with sufficient seating that you at least have a possibility of getting seated with no reservation. My family and I had dinner here Saturday night. The decor is very nice, but they had it way too cold in there and it was already very cold outside. We ordered a number of items and the star was the tuna dish under cold plates. We love sushi and Japanese food in general, but the rest of the food was just ok. I think the worst of the dishes was the chicken kaarage. They have whole entire chicken tenders (3) and they were bland. We made a 40 minute drive that we don't plan to make again. Our waitress was very nice, the owner? Manager? Came by to check on us, and they will never let you go thirsty. The service at this restaurant is definitely not up to standard, and neither is its manager. We ordered sushi--I ordered mine, and I ordered my friend's. Her sushi arrived immediately, but mine took forever. Two or three times I asked the server if they forgot my order or could check the status. Only when I was really annoyed and asked to cancel did my sushi arrive. That's issue number one. Issue number two: When I got the check, I assumed they might remove the sushi for the delay--they didn't. It was $60. I gave my card, and they charged me $90. Not only did they take forever, but if I hadn't noticed, I'd have overpaid by $30. I didn't leave a tip. The manager removed the $90, charged me $60 again, and said, "To make it up to you, I'll give you an ice cream," which felt insulting. I got up and left. That manager is not fit for that restaurant. Be careful--they overcharge, and the service is poor. read more

Shun is a concept by the owners of Yama and Chef Kenny Chong (formerly of Shoyo in Dallas). Chic, date night-worthy decor, full bar, but not pretentious. They have a nice variety of sushi options, rolls, amazing sashimi (our favorite), plus robata, appetizers, and house made desserts. Fish is standout fresh and the chefs put strong attention to detail in the preparation and presentation. We've tried several of the appetizers - all delicious - and one unexpected standout is the edamame. I swear the charred lemon sauce on the edamame should be bottled and sold. The robata skewers are delicious and there are multiple options from which to choose. For us, sashimi and sushi are tops and this place does not disappoint. The menu also offers options for omakase-style dining - having the chefs select and prepare food including the "Kenny special" which is awesome if you want something really special. Dessert was delicious - tried the bread pudding which was like little fried pillowy donuts! Yummy! We plan to be there a lot. read more

This place is a hidden gem that won't stay hidden long. The sushi is top quality and incredibly fresh. We lived in San Francisco and had great sushi all over the city -- Shun is on that level. The service is excellent, the ambiance is upscale, and while it's not cheap, it's absolutely worth it. read more
