Judging this for what it is. A delicious messy steak sub. There are other things on the menu but, the steak sub is why you come here. The actual place has no real dining area. Just some benches and garbage receptacles. Don't let the inside appearance deter you from eating here though!! This sub was worth it to me. They have their own unique sauce that has a little sweetness to it. I ordered mine with onions, mushrooms and, mild peppers. Next time I will try it with hot peppers instead. I think that will cut the sweetness of their special sauce to perfectly balanced level. I ordered an 8" with fries and it was under $15. I think that is a good deal by today's standards. This sub is FULL of chopped steak. From end to end of the bun and filled to the point of almost overflowing. When you take a bite make sure you have the double foil it's wrapped in under you for the steak and juice that will definitely fall out to catch it. It's so messy that I kept the inner foil wrapped around sub because it was already messy and I used the outer foil as a way to hold it without getting hands all messy. Fries were nothing special. Just arrived in Buffalo and I had an hour to kill and I was hungry so I fired up Yelp and Shy's Original Steakhouse popped up. Boy was I glad it did. First things first--Shy's is a hole-in-the-wall, almost literally. You walk in and there are no tables; just a seated waiting area. You order from a small counter and then wait, but man, is it worth it. I was handed a white bag with a tightly wrapped steak hoagie nestled inside. If you want a drink to go with, you get it yourself out of a vending machine. The steak hoagie was fabulous. Shy's style is more minced than chopped, so the peppers, mushrooms and onions are fully incorporated into the meaty, cheesy mass on the roll. The roll itself was fresh and slightly toasted--just perfect. For a hungry person, this totally hit the spot. If I had been hungover, it would have been heaven and I'd be napping right now. We ordered two large steak hoagies, one with mild and one with hot peppers. Delicious! Hot fresh and full of good meat, cheese and onions. Wished we got both with the hot peppers, it was sooooo good! It's a former bank branch and it has total ambiance, if you love being in the neighborhood like I do. (Around the corner from the Broadway Market.) You watch the cooking and the whole process is a Health Department gold star for food handling. The mouth watering sandwich flavor can not be described and the bun is so fresh, yet sturdy enough to hold the beef juices without getting soggy and uneatable. Seasoned just right! Bread is so soft! Just a good sandwich! So good that we went to Seneca Casino to eat them and two passer-bys asked "where did you get those sandwiches from???" Amazing. I love Philly cheesesteak, and this place is legit. I love the cheesesteak with the hot peppers. The steak is very tender, just melts in your mouth. The rolls are great. The mixture of peppers with the cheesesteak is just great. There isn't really anywhere to eat in there, it's mostly just take out, but it is definitely worth it. I have bad news for you boys. Well most of you. Whoever it was that said Shy's Doesn't Matter, lied to you. SHY'S MATTERS. This place is the proof. What to order: Cheesesteak with everything, of course. When I'm over here on the East Side getting one (so to speak), all the locals think I'm a spy, because I've got Bette Davis Shy's. Some restaurants have very shy employees, and some are "Shy"er than others. But none are as shy as the employees of Shy's. They are absolutely, definitely, positively, undeniably, irrebukably, "Shy"er than any other restaurant employees in town. Did I just invent the word irrebukably? Jesus. This is in what suburbanites would call a sketchy neighborhood, but it's perfectly safe to visit and buy food. They serve some of the biggest, heftiest, juiciest, hottest, sexiest and heaviest hoagies in town... they might be the best in town, and if not, they're definitely right up there. I like the ones from Zip's, too, and some other places. I definitely think the food at Shia's, for example, is better than Jim's Steak Out. You can basically get a steak sandwich (or some other sandwiches), piled with onions, mushrooms, peppers, and whatever else you want. The bread is wet and dripping from the juice, it's basically heaven. It's a little bit sweet for my taste, but I still adore it, and will go back here on a regular basis to try these very bad-for-you but very good-for-your-taste-buds sub sandwiches. I went back just the other day to give it another try (my 4th try), and was delighted to find out they're open until something like Midnight or 1am every night. Who can beat that? It took about 10 mins to make my sandwich... it's $2 extra for 4 extra inches (if only renting male escorts was so cheap. Other than me I mean)... The sandwich was every bit as juicy and delicious as I remembered it. The lady wanted to sell me some sandwiches that hadn't been picked up for $5 each, to save me money, but they'd been sitting for 40 mins so I declined. I'm not really into lukewarm food so it would have been a waste of calories. My fresh one was amazing. There is hardly anywhere to sit in here so plan on getting it to go, or better yet call it in. They have steak and sausage, or chicken steak too, but I'd start with the original with everything and see what you think. It's probably the best cheesesteak in WNY, and significantly better than Jim's as I said, and better than Mike's on Bailey near the 33. Wooo whee --- where has this steak shop been all my life? Apparently right here on the east side! The neighborhood doesn't have the greatest reputation, but I'll gladly risk my life to come here for these steak subs (it's really not that bad). If you have a smidgen of doubt, just take a look at the photo I uploaded. That is a heavenly sandwich. Yes, it's oily, greasy and cheesy...and you'll love it. A ton of freshly-grilled beef, with cheese, onions, mushrooms and peppers served on a white locally baked Constanzo roll. The 8" sub is around $9, while the 12" is $12, but even the 8" sub can be split in half. They grill right behind the counter and it is take out only. The sandwich itself is immaculately packed inside layers and layers of tinfoil and will be piping hot, even if you open it 30m+ later. The grease will absorb all through the roll and I don't suggest eating it in your car, as it can get a little messy. Nonetheless, I'm so thrilled to have discovered this east side steak shop so close to downtown. You bet I'll be venturing down for a delicious steak sandwich very often and I urge you to get out here and try one for yourself. Forget Jim's --- come to Shy's. read more

I hadn't had Shy's in a couple years due to the fact that their service a frequent tendency to be TRASH ! Today I decided to give it another try and they didn't let me down. The woman that took my order took my order incorrectly. I didn't know until I came to pick it up. She while bagging it up I noticed they looked smaller than expected. I asked if they were 12 in? She advised no 6.. definitely not what I ordered. And gave zero cares. I reorder and she asks: "Everything right"? I respond no mushrooms please. She then looks at me and says that's not what you said before . I told her I would never ask for mushrooms because I cannot eat them. She rolls her eyes and had all types of attitude. The greatest steak place in the world. I have cheesesteaks all over the world including Philly and these are the best. The portion size are more than anywhere else and there price point is perfect. I was there on last week Friday and order 2 steak hoagies my food was not appealing I paid for extra sauce and cheese(white American) and got a dry sub with yellow American. I called and ordered my food and customers that came in to order got they food before I did. Problem is they close at 7 stop taking orders at 6:20, which means what essentially ? They close at 6:20 made it in exactly at that time and they said they were done for the day like sign already out. Which means what? You have to get there early for the already early closing time.
