I knew the AYCE policy all party has to do, so i asked her if its possible to not do AYCE but order something else, she let me do it!! Secondly, i tried their new menu its like a dry hotpot. I think I should, despite embarrassing myself a bit, properly characterize my naivete when I stumbled upon this eatery in suburban DC. I am from Minnesota, and was on a road trip with a friend. We were hungry and started driving around this neighborhood looking for something that sounded good. Before going inside we were like, "what about this place, looks like Chinese takeout or something, 99-cent something that sounds good let's just do it." We quickly learned that it is neither traditional* Chinese, nor takeout, nor 99-cents. By the time we were done, our table was covered with litter and drippings from our many rookie mistakes, but we had to admit that we had just had a very new and interesting food experience. So if you're like us and had no idea what this would be like, this paragraph is for you. All of the tables have recessed hot plates for each seat. You order a type of broth from their selection, and they place a pot on the plate which burbles fragrantly for your whole meal. (Burbles at, you guessed it... 99 degrees Celsius; a touch below boiling.) You then order your choice of noodles, meat, and veggies. When they bring them, you throw them in the pot to cook for a few minutes. While the stuff cooks, you might want to go spoon up a sauce concoction from their big sauce bar. You fish your cooked food out of the broth and dip it in sauce to eat it, while the broth perhaps gets to work on some other stuff you throw in there. Fondue comparisons are fair. This restaurant does it as an all-you-can-eat offering, so you can, in theory, request some different ingredients to try. It seems like this is the way to experience hot pot cuisine, because it's all about the increasingly amazing flavor experience you're having. By the time you're done, you can treat yourself to a spoonful (or many) of the broth that you've spent the whole meal seasoning. The broth options seemed interesting too, although I must admit with regret that my friend and I both picked the one at the top of the list. We were there kind of late, and I think the staff was ill-prepared for how to explain the routine to us. Also, kind of bafflingly, we weren't brought any napkins or cutlery until we requested them. And at $23, this is by no means a cheap option. Yes, that is an "all you can eat" price, but they actually really guilt trip you about wasting food. They sternly warn you both verbally and in writing that you will be charged extra if they think you are irresponsibly requesting stuff you don't end up eating. As of Wednesday July 26th, this is my favorite hot pot place in the area. It's got tons of variety, plenty of tables, and they are open late! Don't expect all your orders to come out correctly BUT with all the variety, I honestly feel like they do it purpose so you're not overwhelmed. You have a choice of six broths and I tell myself I'll try the others but I end up getting the Sichuan or Pork Bone soup. From what my dining companions have said, the herbal is really good as well. The dessert isn't so appetizing that we didn't even touch it even if it's free The staff was so accommodating and checks on us every now and then. Came on a Friday night with the Bf because we're weird and eat hot pot in 90 degree weather. To be honest I was skeptical about 99 degrees because it's location he had so much turn over. Walking in it was a totally different place upscale fancy chairs a few booth style tables. Once seated we were handed menus and then less then a min after sitting we were ask what we wanted to drink and what we wanted to order. Mind you we haven't read the menu yet so we quickly perused as the waiter hovered while we order and then recorded it on his tablet. BTW if you didn't get the memo it's AYCE for $22.99... so no need to rush through the menu. I chose the Chinese herbal broth and he Bf got the spicy szcheuan broth. The BF took time to look around and found a sauce bar...ranging from satay sauce,a house sauce, peanut sauce grandma's chili oil and a few other things like jalapeños,garlic cilantro basically anything you would need to conjure your own sauce combo. Veggies:king oyster mushrooms,watercress, and bamboo shoots,bok choy Seafood: blue crab,squid,fish balls,cuttlefish balls, fish tofu,shrimp and Fish Meat:Fatty Brisket, Mini sausages Udon Noodles & Rice Other:Chinese cruller/Breadstick, fuchow wonton Oh and I tried to order both seaweed and Melon but apparently hey either ran out or they just forgot it twice since I just happened to order it more then once since it never arrived. (+ ): a good majority of the items are not frozen, the meat is thinly slice which makes for quick cooking. There is endless refills of soup is a bonus. YUM... and fishballs nothing special until you bite in and find a meaty center. Surprise however caution it's juicy and it's hot so there maybe some leakage of hot liquid. (-) : possible cross contamination of items everything comes out on your platter plate. The Chinese cruller pieces were touching raw shrimp...no bueno. The soup container was kinda sitting lopsided which was weird but tolerable. Blue crab was good but really tiny that it's difficult to get into it. Overall... this place is decent it's another alternative for hotpot in the nova area and for me it's closer then hotspot is. The only reason I fail to give it 4 stars is because the waiter was rushing us and then disappeared for a good amount of time so other people walking by had to help us . We even had to walk to the counter to pay our check cause he never came by. Food wise were good but service wise not great and normally I wouldn't judge and Asian restaurant on service however when it's AYCE and I'm paying for it you best believe it Better be up to snuff especially because I cannot go into the kitchen and get my own hotpot items. The restaurant was clean and quiet but there were lots of cardboard boxes in the walkway to the bathroom. My broth was the curry with medium spice and it was so spicy. After a couple of Hot Pot experiences, I believe it's safe to say that Hot Pot is just not my thing. They give you a bunch of food to cook in boiled broth/water, and have a bunch of special sauces to add some flavor. The customer is suppose to determine how long to cook beef, fish, etc. When I go out to eat, I don't want to cook. I pay for the cooks to cook. It's like when you go to a concert and the musical artist wants the crowd to sing along. No thank you. I pay for you to sing, not me to sing. It's all you could eat, just make sure you don't order too much and leave a bunch of food at your table, cause they will charge you extra. They have all different types of pork, fish, vegetables, and everything in-between. We got clams, squid, fish balls, golden balls, pork, tofu, mushrooms, and much more. There is a sauce bar with peanut sauce, soy sauce, and various others. You could have a sauce party if you want. Each person has their own pot of broth at the table where you could adjust the temperature. All the waiter/waitress does is bring over the uncooked food and drinks. Coming to this hot pot location was my first experience with an AYCE hot pot ever! And, I have to say it was surprisingly good. The menu is overwhelming at first - they have so many options that ordering the first time is hard since you can't tell the waiter you want everything. I chose the pork bone broth since I'm not a big fan of spicy, and my sauce consisted of hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, green onions, cilantro, and some soy sauce (super salty, great for bland stuff). I also like how we were able to sample some broth options before picking (although it took forever to get and no waters were brought out still). Today I decided to give this place a try since my regular spot "hot spot" is closed till 5pm and this place was open and had very good reviews. I got here around 4pm and it was dead empty which didn't bother me and my friend. I actually love places that aren't crowded as much. Along with the soup you can order as much meat and as much veggies as you please until you decide that you can't eat anymore. Im not sure what really happened but when we put in our order on what we wanted, we thought that everything was going to come out at the same time. Turns out that our server only took down the first half of it and while we were waiting to get the rest, we had to reorder it again cause he didn't note it down the first time. There might have been a miscommunication cause our server didn't speak English very well (which is understandable) but we did manage to get everything we ordered. Review #089 - 2018 My girlfriend and I originally planned to meet up at The Hot Spot, but we were told that the wait for 2 adults and a baby would take an hour so I decided to make a quick call to 99c Hot Pot to see if there was any wait at their location. Unfortunately, having a baby makes getting from point A to point B, not so easy because you have to pack & unpack all the stroller, diaper bags, etc. My girlfriend mentioned that she didn't enjoy their broth the last time she was here; but she was willing to give them a second chance, which she said she was glad that I convinced her to. Even then, we decided to head out in hopes that the wait would be much less than an hour since it was already 7:15 PM by this time & the baby was starting to get fussy because she was hungry. When we finally got to 99c, it was about 7:30 and the young girl out front told us that it would take an hour to get seated. I was really disappointed at this time, but I told her that I had called & someone told me that there was no wait so she asked me, "oh! You were the one who called?" Luckily, that got us a table almost instantly. Yay! We waited about 15 minutes before we finally got tired of waiting and flagged someone down to take our order. When our broth and food finally showed up, they had forgotten about all our veggies so we had to flag someone else down to reorder the veggies. If you mix the two, it's definitely a game changer! As we dipped more seafoods and meats, both broth tasted even better. My husband liked the food selection, loved the shrimp paste. My only complaint was the portions were a little big for just my husband and I, on everything. We got full fast and didn't have a chance to try other foods from the menu. 3.5. Brought my gf here for her first hot pot and I wish service was better. I guess there's a language barrier here cause our server totally didn't get anything I said to him. I got the spicy broth and though it was nice and spicy, I wish that they would strain it. There's literally so much pepper in it that it completely ruins the taste of the meat and veggies you have with it. The sauce bar I wish was better. A lot of things missing. So I went ahead with just making a sesame based sauce for dipping. Probably will be back but my 2nd time here let me down. Big time. read more
