We decided to try the food here and we are so glad we did! The flavors of everything we ordered were so much better than any Chinese food we've had. Their version of our favorite dishes was a tiny bit different as their flavors are elevated beyond anything we've had before. Portion sizes are very generous for both meat & veggies. We had enough leftovers for another meal. NOTE: The dishes labeled spicy are truly very spicy. The dumplings were amazing! The filling and flavor made it seem homemade rather than frozen dumplings that had been purchased. The dipping sauce put it over the top. This is the first time I've had hot & sour soup that actually has enough "hot" to notice. It is very spicy and delicious. General Tao's chicken was incredible. The sauce was light & not too sweet like other places. It sticks to the chicken beautifully without overpowering it. When I bit into it, there was a nice blend of sauce & breading from the perfectly fried chicken. But then...the chicken flavor hit the taste buds and I was blown away by how pronounced & incredibly delicious it was! I'm accustomed to only tasting the sauce so I was in heaven! Too bad this was my husband's meal! Chicken with broccoli is my go-to when trying a new place. I decided to have it in garlic sauce. Result: a flavor explosion! Just got takeout for the first time. Many friends and local reviewers have said their food is genuine, authentic, well-prepared and properly seasoned. I couldn't agree more -- it all was great. Dishes were beautifully done, and the spices were balanced, aromatic, and wonderfully varied amongst the assorted dishes. Everything had a clean, fresh, clear flavor and mouth feel. Some of the dishes had seasonings which were unfamiliar to my palate, and the experience was like turning down a street which you've never traveled on before to discover an exciting new neighborhood. Their fare is about as far as you can get from the gloppy, soupy, heterogeneous mess that describes so much neighborhood take-out. This is the best Chinese food I've had since Colleen's in Cambridge (and that was a long, long time ago). What we ordered... But when I order something called Home Style Stir Fried Fish and Shrimps I do not except to see a bunch of corn and the frozen peas and carrot mix my Mom served me as a child mixed in. This is a true work of art nothing competes with homemade. - Chengdu Style Sautéed Sliced Pork Belly - If you haven't tried Chengdu of anything this will make you a life long fan. The pork belly is sliced raw verse tradition methods which includes boiling the pork belly first. This raw delicacy is then trimmed to remove the rind and stir fried crisp, then blended with an array of hot peppers and other finely chopped flavorful seasonings and finally fresh chopped leeks are added to almost create a braising affect that tenderizes the pork I didn't realized I liked leeks until I had this dish it was incredible and the amount of pork belly incorporated was surprising there is plenty to share if you dare. As much as I want to experience it all this dish will be tough to pass on my next visit. I paired all of this with an ice cold Two Roads Double IPA, now I'm not claiming to be an expert on pairing anytime except maybe a shot of patron tequila and a lime but this was no doubt the right choice for this meal. Me mind on fire -- Me soul on fire -- Feeling hot hot hot (Buster Poindexter-Hot, Hot, Hot) So I've been seeing these reviews of Sichuan Pepper piling up on Yelp for a while. The main themes are 1) this is authentic Schichuan (and not Americanized) Chinese food, and 2) the food can be pretty darned hot. Well I'm not sure I can swear in a court of law that the food is authentic Schichuan, although it sure seemed that way, but I can surely testify with full confidence that the food is super spicy and absolutely delicious here. What made it seem "authentic Schichuan?" How about the fact that the blackboard specials were listed in Chinese? How about the many customers speaking Chinese among themselves and the waitstaff? How about a menu that proudly offers sliced tripe, sliced tendon, or diced rabbit in red chili oil, hot and spicy bean jelly, spicy pigs feet, spicy frogs legs, hot and spicy pork intestine, hot and spicy eel, pork intestines casserole, stir fried sponge gourd, and braised tripe and omasum (stomach). Not exactly chicken fingers and crab rangoons, agreed? What made it so spicy? Well, I had lunch today with a co-worker who lived in California for many years and is a veteran of real deal spicy Chinese food. By the end of our meal, he said his lips and tongue were AWOL. We zeroed in on the lunch menu, I had the Guizho Spicy Chicken ($13.95) and my friend had the Kong Pao Chicken and Shrimp (also $13.95). The lunches include your choice of white or fried rice and either egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, or an spring roll. I had never seen Guizho on a menu, so of course I went for it -it had one of those red pepper icons next to it to signify hot and spicy. A spicy plate of wok fried chicken with green onions, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, and what seemed like a quarter cup of those skinny and super potent red pepper chilies arrived in front of me. The peppers were cut up pretty small, and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to eat them or push them aside. I decided to banish them to the outer rim of my plate, but the spice level for this incredibly delicious dish was way up there, but in a good way. I tried some of my buddy's Kong Pao; it was very good, but didn't deliver the firepower of my dish. He tried a forkful of mine, and his eyes lit up like the Fourth of July. Wow, simply incredible! I'm really quite mad at myself that this restaurant was right around the corner and I settled for vastly inferior Chinese Food for all of these years. This is absolutely authentic Szechuan Cuisine and they have the chops to back it up. For my first visit I just tried a few of the samplings. The Pork Wontons in Red Chile Oil is absolutely delicious. The heat of this dish is absolutely perfect. I also had to try the Pork Fried Rice for comparison purposes and it is superior to anything that I have had. This is probably because they actually take pride in the pork they put in this dish. It actually has a deep flavor compared to much of the stuff you get at other Chinese Restaurants. I ended with the Smoked Pork with Dried Chili Pepper. You could just smell the smoke from this dish and it was laced with chunks of Chili Pepper...simply delicious. I did end up getting take out, but the restaurant looks quite nice with a bar that has ample seating. Honestly, I can't wait to go back, take a seat at the bar and start sampling their extensive menu. If you are afraid of spice and flavor than maybe this place isn't for you (but I'm sure they can dial the spice back a bit if you would like). However, if you enjoy deep rich authentic flavors...let Sichuan Pepper bring you back from the deep fried hell of the Chinese you normally eat. read more

We ended up here quite unexpectedly l when we didn't realize that Rein's deli was closed. By happy accident, we found ourselves next door here. The gamble really paid off! This is truly an authentic Chinese restaurant. We had things recommended by the manager that we'd never tried, and in ample portions. We had a very spicy tofu dish I'd never heard of. Really, Tofu!?? Who knew it could be so amazing! The little one ordered his shrimp & noodle dish, which was yummy, though not so adventurous. Light sauce, nice light taste. Not so much shrimp, but a big portion. Solid Sichuanese food on the east side of Hartford. I've been there a couple time a couple years apart and it has been great! There are so many authentic and delicious Sichuanese dishes. We popped in here on a rainy Sunday afternoon after waiting for twenty minutes in a line going nowhere at the deli next door. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but as long as the 'Open' sign was lit, that was enough. Coming into the restaurant, we were quickly seated and could tell from the menu that the place was legit... Sichuan dry hot mala pot or noodle soup had all the classic ingredients as options, including stuff most boring folks here would be scared to add. Awesome. The decor was nice enough and though somewhat dimly lit the place had a very comfortable feel to it. We got the Sichuan mala soup with a bunch of different mushrooms and tofu and cabbage, and the garlic eggplant with rice. The mala comes in three levels of spice and we took 中辣, medium, which turned out to be perfect. The level of service was great- the server checked in twice during the meal at the right times, and we finished everything because it was too good to leave. I wish I'd gotten a photo to show the scale of the soup pot, but suffice it to say it was perfect for two to share with another side or entree, and the mala spice added welcome dimension to the meal. Stopped by for lunch. It was super quiet when I got there with Service that was hit or miss. Food came out quickly and the lunch special price is right. Got the guizhou chicken which was definitely unlike other typical dishes. Not sauce heavy, it had plenty of Szechuan peppercorns and that distinctive numbing. The fried rice was fine and the hot and sour soup average to verging on good. Overall, enjoyed the meal but would need to come back for dinner. Otherwise it just wasn't worth the drive or effort for me - particularly where there is Reins nearly next door. read more

I like Sichuan cuisine. There are only two places in Hartford which serves this cuisine. One is Shu in West Hartford and the other one is this. Shu is slightly more expensive, slightly more tasty, slightly more professional than this one. But this restaurant is still awesome. Food is really spicy and good. If you cannot hold hot and spicy food stay away. Every dish is loaded with a ton of flavorful Sichuan pepper. Especially if you take deep fried diced chicken sauteed with dried chili pepper, more than half of the dish is pepper. Initially I thought I should eat the chili also. Hardly I reached home before the chillies found its way out. And I felt the spiciness with the entire path the chillies traveled. Even when I decided not to eat chillies, a lot of chilly flakes will find its way to my stomach. The chili flakes will move your bowels nicely next morning. May be you can call it a good weight loss strategy. They have fresh frogs and from legs. Always go for frog legs. It's a mess to eat the bony fresh frogs. Eating frog legs is a delight. Guizhou chicken is something I highly recommend. Chicken cut to small pieces and crisp fried. Very tasty. General tso's chicken is good any where. It's good here also. Dan Dan mein had too much chili flakes. It was tough to eat. Fried rice here is really good. Mala pot delight was good too. Ma po tofu is good as well. I badly wanted to give them five stars. I like their food. And it is a unique kind of restaurant. But the waiters are not always friendly. When they say they close at 9:30 they want you out of the door by 9:30. Generally in restaurants that means they will serve till 9:30 but you can finish the food and go. I went at 8:30 and they were not enthusiastic to serve me. By 9 they wanted me to close the check and from 9:10 the looks were like 'are you not gone yet'. Generally I don't consider bad behavior in my review. Middle of no where... amazing food. We have had a couple of our friends recommend this place to us so we finally decided to try it out. When we arrived on a Friday evening, the restaurant was packed. We didn't wait long to be seated as we got pretty lucky with the seating, but you'll have to be super patient bc the service is mind blowing slow. We ordered so.much.food. because it was absolutely delicious!! We ordered, mapa tofu, spicy chicken guizou, chengdu pork belly, chicken in garlic sauce, chicken fried rice and home style stir fried fish and shrimps. Though all the dishes were AMAZING, the spicy chicken guizou and chengdu pork belly were absolutely phenomenal!! The only thing we did not like among all the great dishes was the home style fired fish dish... like another previous commenter stated... it was fish and shrimp, stir fried in such-generic frozen veggie mix (corn, peas, carrots... seriously?) and the worst part is that it's expensive too lol In all, we loved the food minus 1 dish. Definitely will be back to try other dishes that will hopefully not come with frozen veggie mix. read more

We ordered takeout for four last evening, our first visit to this establishment. Long time local residents, and we patronize a large number of restaurants in the South Windsor/ Vernon area. Food quality was mediocre at best, and sadly all four of us suffered with "digestive issues" later in the evening. Lots of visits to the john, into today as well. Spoke to an unsympathetic individual who told me "no one ever complains"...I am not looking for a refund, or a discount, as we will NOT be patronizing this place in the future. Drove 5 miles to pick it up and I have never been excited to a meal like this before. Got home, opened a bottle of beer and proceeded to eat my chicken. Took a spoon full and THREW it up! I'm not sure how it's made but this crap was like eating a brick of SALT!!! I'm pissed, disappointed, angry and hungry! I called them to report it and they could careless. 5/2020 updated review - I heard the old owner retired and now it's taken over by someone new. Prices went way up in the years it's been around. It used to be my favorite restaurant until the food quality started to change. Just ordered the hot and sour which was very good actually but the Mapo Tofu has gone downhill over the years. This time I ordered it, there was a lot of portion but it lacked the flavor and heat it used to have. Kind of like eating a watered down mapo tofu. I hope they are reading their reviews because I'm hearing the same complaints reading through especially people who are like "the quality went down, or the chef must have changed". How can you up prices and the quality goes down??? Time to replan Sichuan Pepper and going back to old ways when this place was the talk of the town. Thank You. read more

We stopped in here for lunch and enjoyed a really solid meal. Both dishes, the General Tso's and Guizhou chicken were tasty and pretty well balanced. The General Tso's was a smidge sweet compared to my personal preference but had great bell pepper flavor. With the Guizhou chicken, I wasn't quite sure what to expect and was very pleasantly surprised. Each morsel fried up a bit crispy and the sauce seemed to have a vinegariness (could be mistaken though). If you don't eat the peppers the dish has a pleasant warmth without being spicy. The lunch special came with a spring roll and fried rice - both simple and tasty. The fried rice was not charred, oversauced, or greasy and had that wok hei that seems to elude the home cook. You absolutely can't beat the lunch prices and I was impressed with the portion size. Dinner prices make me think the way to go would be to go family style amd share a handful of dishes.
