Not the best Chinese food I have eaten. The problem with living for years in places where oriental food is the norm is that when you leave those places - Hawaii, Japan, California - you find yourself adrift. The tastes are off, the preparation is not what you are used to. I have eaten at Sichuan Pepper twice before. My party did not like the level of MSG and ruled the restaurant out. I am not as troubled by MSG in reasonable amounts, though I find it unnecessary. Today, I was busy with tasks at home, no one was around to complain about the food at Sichuan Pepper, and I had a yen for Chinese food. I went to the online ordering service and ordered chicken fried rice, dumplings with sweet sesame paste and spring rolls. Very basic fare, nothing I would order for a gala night out, just comfort food. How could it be spoiled? I arrived and paid for my meal. There was a mix-up. Instead of the dumplings, which I had paid for, I was given 'sweet potato pancakes with 'sweet filling'. (My order confirmation contained the proper information. Apparently, the restaurant got it garbled.) When I returned home, I double-checked and found my emailed confirmation with the correct items on it. The fried rice was standard fried rice, though not a lot of vegetables and not much to give it flavor. The spring rolls were OK. I tried the pancakes first because they were the least appealing and I wanted to get them out of the way. A sweet potato puree (it might have been canned pumpkin, actually) was apparently rolled out to about 1/4" thick. It was coated with crumbs, and a squashed piece of fruit that might have been a cherry - though not a maraschino cherry because it was not red. It was warmish; apparently it sat in warm oil until I arrived. It was not browned, and the bread crumbs were soggy and oily. The whole thing was barely lukewarm and swimming in grease. And it was not the item I had ordered. The spring rolls had some meat in them, but little flavor. No heat, no spice. They were also cold. I was provided with a container of the pale yellow stuff that is supposed to be duck sauce. It may have been wonderful; I didn't feel like trying it. I warmed the fried rice in my oven. Its container had a ¼" layer of oil on the bottom. I blotted it with a paper towel before I tried to eat it. The rice was browned (my oven helped) the chicken appeared to be strips of breast meat, perfectly fine. But aside from one chunk of carrot in the dish, I didn't see any other vegetables. There were no seasonings used aside from a good deal of MSG. I could taste it, and the characteristic 'papery' feel I get when I encounter the stuff lasted for a good long while. As I noted before, this is not Tokyo or Honolulu or San Francisco. Based on the other reviews, this restaurant has some adventuresome dishes. Unfortunately, if basic dishes like fried rice and pancakes made of sweet potato or yam puree are served up with little flavor and much oil, I don't have any urge to see what can be done with more complicated foods. read more

Fantastic find! Wanted to go to Rein's Deli but was put off by the wait. Sat right down there with excellent attentive service. Killer Scorpion Bowl was followed by exquisitely crispy pan fried dumplings and bright fresh cucumbers in sesame dressing. WOWZA! Just like all the reviews you read this place has fantastic authentic Sichuan! I will highly recommend the Dan Dan appetizer, the noodles, the meat, and the heat was perfect. We also had the pork dumplings with red chilies. It did not disappoint. We ordered the pork and vegetable pot, shrimp in garlic sauce, accompanied by chicken fried rice (as I type this I'm craving the food again)! It was really just that good. The meat was excellent quality, and the flavor is out of this world! The restaurant is well staffed and clean. They have a decent sized bar too. The service was pretty good. I would honestly give the food 5 stars hands down, but when we needed a copy of or receipt they acknowledged us and we waited. I'm sure we might have still been waiting so we left without the copy. I'm sorry to write a bad review because I've been to Sichuan Pepper many times in the past and it was good, but I made the mistake of inviting friends to meet me there this week, and none of us had a dinner that we could eat. The soup was not as good as it once was, and the entrees were just awful. The beef was tough and the chicken had the consistency of gelatin. I won't go into the details of the other entrees in our party, but I ended up really embarrassed for suggesting we eat there. The lady waiting on us was very polite and eager to please, and we didn't complain about the awful food, but we won't be going back. I should note that we were the only people in the restaurant at 1:30 p.m. on a weekday, so I assume that word has gotten out about how bad it has become and we were just the last to find out. read more

If you are in NYC .. driving up to Boston / CT - do make it a point to visit this .. and then when you are back in the city do visit Han Dynasty (reviewed earlier) if you have been there! .. and you will find out why I say that the food at these 2 places are EQUALLY good!! We got there at noon and were the only people there. That was the first sign. It was pretty dark and dingy. The waitress was indifferent at best. No tea or chips offered. The food was mediocre at best. The crab Rangoon didn't have much if any crab. The pork dumplings and sauce were only ok. I had to get up and walk to the front and wait for the girl to be off the phone to ask for more duck sauce. There were no combination dinners available on the weekend. Ordered chicken and broccoli, General Tso's and pork fried rice. Husband said General Tso's was decent. The chicken and broccoli and rice served luke warm and neither were impressive. The food is food but I wouldn't say it is legit Sichuan food. I ate here for dinner had long pepper & beef, mapo tofu, and mayishangshu a noodle dish that people usually have with rice. (It's salty and spicy, it's not a noodle dish you would have alone as an entree) Anyways, the place is cozy, good for friends. I wouldn't come here for a date night. Keep in mind, my review comes from a pescetarian perspective. I found the staff very friendly and answered all my questions. I ordered veggie rolls. They were ok. The spice in these dishes carry the slight numbing agent in the peppers gives off a funny feel with a great balance of flavor. Try the chicken sauteed in dry hot chili peppers and the wonton in chili oil app. The wontons have a nice sweet kick drenched in the chili oil. Here, Sichuan Pepper prepares real Chinese cuisine alongside the ordinary American Chinese fare. I have passed by this jewel so many times on my way to Reins. I'm despondent over this lack of observation. Cold Sichuan noodles extraordinarily good; a little zippy but balanced with a hint of sweet and sesame. On a 90 degree day the perfect appetizer. Beef with scallions and onions so incredibly tender and the sauce is perfect. Service warm and friendly. Interior clean and neat. One of my fav goto chinese restaurant in Vernon. My favorite dish is their dan dan noodle (if you're craving something spicy) and shredded beef with pepper. I also love all their veggie dish its really healthy but super delicious. I usually get my food for takeout because the restaurant gets very busy at night. After eating here more times, I feel like my previous review didn't do this business a good enough of a justice. My favorites from this place are beef slices in chili cold sauce appetizer. It really spices up your appetite, getting your taste buds ready for the main dishes. Scallion pancakes are heavenly delicious, served with a sweet and salty sauce. They are always the right crispness. Pork feet has recently made its way on my order list. I do find it to be quite inconsistent. Sometimes it tastes more flavorful and actually has meat while other times its bland and absolutely no meat in the dish. I personally like the combination of both skin and meat in my plate. So it was rather disappointing to dig through the whole dish without seeing any piece of meat. Water boiled fish is also good if you like strong tastes. It's very salty so just be aware of that. There was someone with us with peanut allergies, and 2 of our dishes had peanuts and it was not labeled at all that it had peanuts, on the menu. This is one the most unique experiences of my life. So unique that if I tell this to anyone, its almost unbelievable....& hilarious. I had been exploring various menus and places around trying to find a 'rabbit' dish. And I found this place. Ofcourse with an assumption that 'rabbit' was going to be my favorite dish. During our visit, we were seated and greeted nicely. This place has a dark ambience, dim lights with silence. We order braised rabbit from the menu and some veg fried rice. Rabbit was cooked good. Atleast i thought so and did not know what to expect. I did not like the flavor and wont try it again. Veg fried rice was something usual. No complaints. They can certainly improve the ambience and make it more lively. After all, when you try exotic and new dishes, the last thing you want is a dark ambience while you are chewing something unknown. We finished the meal and I tipped him appropriately as per the check. And left. As we approached our car, I saw the manager running towards me with my bill. He requested me to add some more $$ as the tip and mentioned that their servers make the money from the tips. I was baffled by his behavior but succumbed to his demand. I have no issues with tipping, but this was something very unique where I wrote the additional tip amount in the parking lot. If you enjoy spice, this is a spot you must try. Great authentic food and friendly service. The Dan Dan Mein is a delicious spicy starter that you won't stop eating until the entire bowl is gone! Noodles have great chew and the chili oil flavor is outstanding. Same goes for the homemade dumplings in chili oil. The cumin lamb had great flavor but the game changer was the sliced beef hot & spicy bowl! The flavor was incredible and the beef was extremely tender. I will caution you that this dish is extremely spicy but I kept going in for more! It's a huge portion but it does reheat very well. I really enjoyed the spicy dishes here even though it is not that spicy compared to real traditional Sichuan food. But the taste is really close to the original one. The service is pretty good also. The problem is that it is expensive since the portion sizes for each dish are really small and it cost us 5 people 150 dollars including tips for lunch. read more

We started with the dumplings in red chili oil, which was delicious and probably the best part of the meal. We also got the Dan Dan mein, which was good but I've had better.
