I love this place! The food is fantastic and so reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food you get. We dined in on a Monday evening and we were well spaced from others. The decor is much to be desired but we don't go there for the decor, it's the food that makes this place so special. I forgot to take photos as I couldn't help but dig in. But all the other photos that people posted is exactly what the food looks like. Everything we ordered was made quickly and came out delicious, the Mapo tofu, stir fried spicy chicken, dried green beans and even the egg foo young which I've never had before was well prepared and yummy. Yesterday I decided to try a new Chinese restaurant... I ordered a combination lo mein and two egg rolls... The price was 20 bucks, and the lo mein noodles were not edible... It tasted like the noodles were cooked in a Mongolian stove or a walk that had been burnt... I could not remove the burnt flavor... Authentic Sichuan food with an old school Chinese restaurant feel is what you will find here. I am mostly a vegetarian. I had the most delicious stir fried veggie dish. It's hard to find an egg roll that isn't more like a spring roll around here, and if you do it's not very tasty -- this however was very good. I had the hot and sour soup which was very good. Last I had the moo shu pork, which is my go-to when trying a new asian place. The moo shu pork was the best I've had so far in Austin. Food: 10 out of 10, authentic with Sichuan favorites but the menu is diverse enough to accommodate all pallets with well executed Americanized favorites like cream cheese puffs. The twice cooked fish was perfect; light and flavorful and crispy. I'm kicking myself for not getting egg rolls to-go. Corn and chicken soup was great too! Service: could not have been better. Very attentive and friendly without being intrusive. They were patient with my indecision and made great recommendations. I've been here several times and this is probably my second-favorite go-to Chinese restaurant in Austin (excluding great but pricey options like Old Thousand or Wu Chow). I used to live in Chinatown in Chicago, so I was spoiled with dozens of good-to-great Chinese restaurants within walking distance. Austin does not have the same selection and I've eaten at several pretty bad Chinese restaurants here. But, Sichuan River makes very good Sichuan fare at a good price. Not the BEST in the city, but probably my favorite in southwest Austin for its big portion sizes that are heavy on the meat and delicious chile crisp. Again, not the best, but we're talking $-$$ hole in the wall restaurant food here. To all the reviews talking about mouth numbing or tingling, apparently y'all have been eating too much panda to know real Chinese food. It's literally sichuan peppercorn and a natural part of this cuisine for certain dishes (see Mapo Tofu). Lastly I will add we were there last night and an incredibly rude family was harassing the wait staff. I mean multiple people just berating them for a simple miscommunication. They handled it the best they could given how unrealistic the customers were being, and were so gracious to try and fix the problem. They even offering to comp the entire bill for them. Spicy food heaven. Generous portions, very fair prices and the most delicious, spicy Sichuan food I've had in Austin. Pretty big menu and everything I've tried has been amazing. This place is my go to for pork intestine dishes in Austin. My fav is their pork intesting hot pot. I wish it was spicier and with more tingling sensation. It's not perfect but definitely a good fix for me. It is super casual with older decor. Wait staff is really friendly but a handful speak minimal english. They try to be helpful though. I've eaten here in the past and the food is decent. However this is the first time I've ordered since the pandemic started and it was a total failure of management. Where do I start? We ordered over $120 worth of food online and gave them several hours to prepare it, to lessen the crunch. My wife called back in to let them know of a slight mistake in the order (wanted a dish more spicy and less SALTY) and was told on separate occasions they were busy and to call back later (what great customer service). When I went to pick it up, the guy brought out a used plastic milk crate filled with plastic and styrofoam containers. No attempt to package my order in plastic bags or even pack my order in a cardboard box that I could keep with me. So I had to take the plastic crate and carefully move everything over to my car (the soup container lids kept popping off because they were so loose - other more reputable restaurants either taped the lids on or wrapped each soup container inside its own plastic bag that was tied tight to keep the lids from popping off). No offer my the employee to help me take the food to my car. If you take a look at my photo you'll see how much food I ordered. Since the pandemic, most of the restaurants I order from have upgraded to better quality takeout containers, not the cheap styrofoam and flimsy plastic ones Sichuan River provides. This is a shame because their food is decent quality but I won't tolerate the lack of customer service and bad attitude. I have many other choices available. Masquerading as a Sichuan restaurant, this food was subpar at best. Simply not good by any standard. My usual test of ordering a beef noodle soup resulted in a bowl of flavorless beef and broth, unseasoned vegetables. It's really a crying shame. See my attempt at eating this mess. The comically overstuffed Crab Rangoon's are homemade along with the sauces and I promise you can taste the difference. I had walked in excited to try this place, but from the jump it was a bummer experience. The hostest just assumed I was there for pick up. No big deal. The server then rushed me to order, and was mad I wasn't ready even though I just sat down (2 hours til close btw). Got my hot and sour soup and it was the worst I've had. They forgot my egg roll and when I brought it up was told it will come out when it's ready. Then the server stuck a full cart of dirty dishes in front of my table and just kept pushing it closer and closer. So I asked him to please move it and he didn't like that either, so he just moved it in front of the people next to me and they had to move it away from them. Then my entree came out and it was rather delicious but not what I ordered, but I didn't mention anything. I was bummed by the whole experience other than the taste of the entree that was wrong. I have been coming to Sichuan River for over a decade and I have always been astonished by their consistency and amazing quality of food, I've had a a LARGE variety of of their menu options over the years and the ones that always seem to be my top choices are the chicken fried rice and general tso's chicken along with a side of cream cheese rangoons, which might I add are some of the best I've had. Sichuan river will be THE chinese takeout restaurant engraved in my mind for the rest of my days. Coming here every now and again is like a highlight of that month, and when I come here I can feel the personal experience and feel the authenticity of the food. And the customer service here, unmatched. Though they may not be the absolute nicest of all people, I know walking in that I'm gonna feel welcome and happy. Michael has been a friend of mine and my dad's for so long, he knows who we are, knows our order, and when we walk in it puts a smile on his face and ours. And to speak on the ambiance, it's just classic, the red seats, 3D sculpture of chinas beauty, the fish, the jellyfish, the newspapers between the table and the glass it's just like nothing I've ever seen. this is some truly delicious Chinese take out. You can taste the flavor of the wok on the lo mein, which is freakin' awesome. The stir fried sichuan chicken was simple but amazing, as well as the singapore noodles. Looks like a mob owned restaurant from the outside haha went at night and the restaurants sign was out and only the "open" sign is lit. The big red doors added the final touch on that "mob" look. I made an order for pickup through GrubHub at around 8:30pm on a Friday night, an hour before the restaurant would close, and 20 mins later GrubHub told me my order was cancelled. So I decided to boil myself a bowl of fancy 50c instant noodles, then the restaurant called me at around 10pm (30 mins passed their closure), to say my food was ready. Confused by this, so I told him GrubHub had already cancelled and that I lived 30 mins away, but the guy on the phone told me they never had done that, and he'd be willing to wait for me to come. So there I was, flying from Northeast to Southwest Austin, and arrived a bit after 10:30pm to see him already in his car with his door open. We greeted and kept apologizing to each other, not on behalf of GrubHub of course, and the guy even gave me some extra sauce to go home with. Finally an authentic Sichuan restaurant that isn't Americanized and the owners and chefs are actually Chinese ! The spices of the dan dan mein and mapo tofu were on point. The map tofu came with a pretty hefty serving of rice which is a must when eating sichuan food. The numbing (mala) spicy flavor was nice and strong unlike other restaurants in Austin that are more watered down. Definitely not the faint in heart though... The interior is a little dry and boring but who cares, as long as the food is good right?! The prices aren't hiked up either and very affordable for broke grad students like me. I'm so excited that we found a good authentic Chinese place in south Austin!!!!! We ordered spicy fish filet, eggplant in garlic sauce and Dan Dan noodles.
