The bun bo hue is SOOO SOLID. It hit all the spots, with the pork blood especially. I guess it's a controversial ingredient because the waiter had to double check I wanted it when I ordered. But in my book a bun bo hue without pork blood is a bun no way. On the other hand I think the pho was missing a little something... couldn't quite put my finger on it but maybe some spice was missing. Everything is amazing! The customer service is phenomenal. My favorite thing is the pho with the fatty brisket, get extra jalapeños if you like it spicy! So here it is: our most recent meal from this restaurant was terrible, and we have eaten at this place numerous times and my partner has even provided a good review of it. But, this time the vegetarian dish was mainly rice, the pancake undercooked and the food generally without flavor. We had to compost most of the food, it was that bad. First off.. the waiter was very nice .. we wanted an inside table and it was a bit crowded, so we sat outside for less than 5 mins and he let us know it was a table available and he would clean it off first . While a couple friends and I were trying to decide where to go to dinner, an Alameda local amongst us recommended Sidestreet Pho as a dinner destination. I must say that I was quite impressed overall. The place was packed on a Saturday night and we had to wait to get a table for four. Inside is quite modern, clean, and chic. We started off with a crispy spring roll appetizer which I thought was just ok. The vermicelli I saw others get looked average as well. However, the soup noodles were amazing. I ordered the oxtail pho and loved every bit of the broth. The oxtail meet was delicious with the vinegar sauce on the side and the noodles were nice and chewy, but the broth was the clear winner here. It's different from the typical casual pho broth in that it has more of a "clean" taste and feel to it as well as a more natural tasting umami flavor. I would recommend Sidestreet Pho for the soup noodles and broth alone. It is also a nice sit-down location for pho for those who are looking for less of a quick and casual experience. read more

This place came up on Google when I was looking for a cute spot with nice ambiance. I went on a Monday at 11am and it was pretty empty so I was able to get a seat quickly (outdoor self seating). I ordered before I ate and the price was pretty expensive. The seafood pho (P4. Pho Hai San Seafood) was $16 for a small. It was very good, the broth was full of flavor and there was plenty of seafood, I'd say more than a standard pho spot. The food came out in two minutes as well. If you're looking for takeout, I'd go with a cheaper place. But if you want to sit in a nice area with a modern setting, this is definitely a great place to go. ($30 pre-tip for the following): - Pho ga with fish (2.5 stars, $9.5): chicken broth wasn't hot enough to cook sprouts and was a bit too sweet for me, fish wasn't dry which though which was nice. Good handful of chicken - Avocado shake (3 stars, $6): yay fresh avocado, a bit too creamy though as it was made with half and half and condensed milk - Porridge seafood special (~$14): Mom had this and didn't enjoy it too much. Smaller menu than many pho places. I ended up ordering a pork banh mi and thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband and mother in law both got pho and also liked theirs. They have a sign outside that service animals are welcomed. However, this is not the case as they will discriminate types of service animals and will turn you away even after being asked what service the animal provides and answering the questions they have asked. To note, we had a service animal and not an emotional support animal. They should get some proper training on this and not have the service animal poster near the front door and discriminate based on breeds. I'm glad I visited this establishment in person as now I will never visit here or order from them online ever. I do not support this place as they will be judging you based on assumptions. VEGAN, GLUTEN FREE review: Came around 8pm on a Saturday night and the place was packed. Luckily, my party of 7 got a table quite quickly. I ordered the Vegan Pho ($9), and it did not disappoint. Other vegan phos I've had had basic veggie broths but this one seemed more flavorful. There was a great mix of fresh veg and tofu in my soup - perfect for a chilly night. I topped my pho with the complementary bean sprouts, sriracha, chili oil and a squeeze of lime. I ate about 3/5 of my bowl and took the rest home. I ate my leftovers the next day for lunch and although the noodles had soaked up much of the broth, they held up well and my pho was still yummy. We had heard about Sidestreet Pho from some friends who had been here before and so when we were cruising around the island, we thought we'd give it a try. The restaurant is tucked just off of Park Street so it is easier to find parking- a real plus in that part of town! We started with the fresh rolls with pork and shrimp that came with a peanut sauce with julienned vegetables mixed in. The rolls were good and the shrimp was nice and fresh, plus I love the end pieces with the lettuce sticking out. I had the chicken pho for my entree, which had good clear chicken broth and lots of onions. The traditional veggie sides for the soup were there, but also shoestring-thin shredded cabbage. My wife got the noodle soup from northern Vietnam and it was full of meat and tofu while having a complex tomato broth with deep meat and seafood flavor and a nice tartness from the tamarind. The house ginger tea was delicious even without being sweetened and I wanted to try the many other non-alcoholic drinks. The drink menu also had plenty of wine, plus local beers from Alameda, two of which were on draft. If you want dessert there is a rolled ice cream shop next door with many interesting options. read more

This is a Vietnamese restaurant and there are so many great/inexpensive Vietnamese restaurants in Alameda, Oakland, and in the East Bay. These prices here are ridiculous. And, ready for this... They make you PAY BEFORE YOU EAT, which is odd/uncomfortable. So, anytime you want to change and/or add something.. You have to put back on your mask and walk up to the hostess and tell her so she can charge you once again from the hostess podium! Really folks?! It's not that serious. Vietnamese Chicken salad and Garlic noodles with shaken beef made the perfect meal for two. Delicious!

Step 1: Note the demographics present, the staff (who are all brilliantly fluent in English), the decor, and think "who is the target audience?" Step 2: Order pho, because the name of their restaurant is "Sidestreet Pho" so the pho is likely their signature dish, right? Step 3: Go eat somewhere else, because you got the first two steps wrong. The target audience isn't you, and the pho, #P1, is appalling. Overall, the food I've tried here just tastes bland. The pho dac biet, which is their combo pho with all the goodies that naturally comes in a large bowl (for $13 at the time of writing), is quite lackluster and probably needs (more) msg or something, because the flavor is lackluster. The side ingredients/garnish is quite minuscule as well. The fish egg rolls taste really bland, and the crab dipping sauce could definitely be more potent. Lastly, don't sit at the bar because the seats slide all over the place which makes it rather uncomfortable to eat properly. Positives? They amde some changes in the layout of the restaurant--the middle area used to be a bunch of different tables, but now the tables are pushed together. They made some changes to the menu within the last year or so as well--namely that instead of having different menu items of pho with ribeye, pho with ribeye/tripe, and different combinations, they now have a build your own bowl with each additional meat costing $2-3. I've had the following and enjoy each one: - P1 Pho Doc Biet - K1 Goi Cuon traditional fresh spring rolls - K3 Goi Cuon Dau Hu Bo vegetarian fresh rolls - K6 Muc Chien Don crispy calamri - Nghieu Hap steamed clams (on the specials menu) There's also a fish spring roll dish they have from time to time--highly recommend. I'm sorry, Sidestreet Pho, you've ruined several of my dinners and I have to let it be known that I will not patronize your establishment further. I understand that the pandemic has greatly impacted the restaurant industry, however, you have no excuse for repeatedly underestimating the wait time for a food order. After placing an order online/over-the-phone, you gave me an estimate of 1-hour. That's a really long time for soup, but I get it. After coming back, though, you had me wait outside for 40-60 minutes more. That's almost TWO HOURS for pho. And this happened three times. I wouldn't even care if your ordering system/staff turned me away because you were too busy, or told me initially that it would take two hours. But how dare you make me wait out in the cold for that much extra time and not at least comp a side of egg rolls or something? Also, your poor host/hostess has to calm an uneasy mob outside. It's an awful experience for everyone. This was my previously my favorite restaurant on the island, but they care so little about their customers that they don't deserve your business. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place!! It's been my go-to pho spot for years now, they have superior broth and meat, and I have tried many many pho spots in Oakland and Alameda. I am a big fan of Brisket and the offer fatty brisket as well as regular brisket which is hard to find. Their meat is so delicious its always soft and tender, and never tastes dry.Their ginger tea is so warming and they have a yummy chef special. I work construction 1 block down the street thought it was convenient to walk and pickup my food. The first time I order the fry rice and it was terrible, dark and rice was hard too salty. It didn't even look like from the pictures. Second time I order something different the rice plate with pork chop. The fish sauce is use by vinegar and man it smell like barf I thought it was the pork chop I couldn't eat it. Ok the third time I order chicken wings and a Thai tea that maybe simple will be good. Best authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Alameda! I love their food, it's the best. Their calamari, spring rolls, and bun bo hue is phenomenal. The shop is extremely clean and modern, I love the atmosphere. They also have the best service, everyone is really friendly and welcoming. Yelp check in is your best friend because they get really busy on weekends and even some weeknights. Sadly, I don't think they're open due to COVID because I have been calling in to order but it goes to voicemail. Hopefully they open for everyday regular takeout soon because their food is the best.
