I dropped in for a quick takeout lunch. I was greeted right away and handed a menu. My order took less than 10 minutes! The Thai fried rice with pork was stupendous. A slight curry flavor without being overwhelming. The pork was tender and cooked through. Cost was $11 and it's easily enough rice for 3 meals. While I was waiting for my food, a man came in for his takeout order and was raving about the shrimp fried rice. The dining room is completely closed still but there is a small waiting area. My boyfriend used to live a lot closer to Sidewok Cafe and we would get take out from here at least once a week. We always got the dinner for two with fried rice and sesame chicken for the entrees. Soup wise, it would vary it would either be wonton soup or hot and sour soup. I love how huge the portions are. I always know we will have leftovers for the next day and who doesn't love left over Chinese? It's like the best. Even with getting delivery, they are super fast. I haven't had a problem with an order from Sidewok. I definitely recommend it. We've tried other Chinese restaurants but nothing comes close to Sidewok at all. Hit or Miss. The Thai noodle soup was basic but still tasty once spiced up. Here's my main issue: I ordered the sesame tofu (labeled as vegan) and it arrived with fried rice w/egg. Not okay, as I ended up tossing it. The shrimp tempura wasn't even in tempura batter, it was cornmeal and as for the garlic pepper beef, I got a total of 5 pieces of beef and rest was all onions and green peppers. This place was gross. We ordered on Grubhub and drove to pick up our order. The neighborhood is super sketchy and the building is super run down and divey but not in a good way. You can kind of see the hoarding and unkept interior from the outside through the filthy windows and believe me once you walk in you aren't let down by the outside appearance. This place stunk as soon as i walked in--of what I'm not sure but it wasn't a pleasant smell. The register was caked in dust and grime; the counter, And glass display case was covered and filled with trash like Walmart receipts, old used batteries ,old candy and PACKED to capacity with junk that obviously shouldn't be there. There was Dirt on the walls and office door as well---ugh, i was appalled. Terrified to eat whatever was going to come out i decided not to feed our son any of the food because who knows what the kitchen looked like. I should have asked for a refund and left but because of the somewhat decent vegan reviews we decided to give it a whirl but made our son something else just in case. My husband ate his meal saying it wasn't the worst he had tasted but he would never order from them again. Mine however was completely inedible. $40 into the trash. I Gave 2stars because they did phone us to make sure we didn't want egg in our meal. Good lookin out but not good enough. The faux vegetarian meat was rubbery and a totally disgusting disappointment. I don't make time to write reviews. My account should be a reflection of that. Upon my interaction tonight, I felt compelled as I hope to help others avoid this spot. I ordered two meals: General Tso's Chicken and the Chicken Lo Mein Combo w/Hot and Sour Soup. General Tso's Chicken - literally inedible. Fried to a crisp and over-breaded to the point of nausea. Sauce had zero spice or flavor to it. The egg fried rice is hilarious too. No sign of veggies or egg. Old, dried out brown rice thrown in a wok. Why try to pass this off as food? Chicken Lo Mein Combo - Actually quite bearable. The issue here is they decided to fill the tray 3/4 full w/more of their fried rice I outlined above. The portion was completely backwards...in hindsight, we should have eaten this entire thing. It would have still yielded a $9.37 refund lol. Hot and Sour Soup - Inedible, unbearable, wtf-are-you-doing awful. My guess is they made a pot of this stuff the previous day and passed it off as today's batch. I'm embarrassed for them on this one. -- The story: I ordered the food and picked it up 10 minutes later from their spot. I got home and plated food for my girlfriend and I. Upon discovering that 90% of this food wouldn't be eaten or passed off as a leftover meal later, I called to arrange a refund. They said they'd call back. In the meantime, I decided to head there w/the remaining food. They refused a "full" refund as they claim we ate half the food lol. They literally gave me $9.37 back and wouldn't consider a dollar more. A couple walked in during our conversation to dine in lol I'm sure they had a solid first impression of what they'd be getting into. I left with the money thinking "how does this make good business sense to take my money after having an awful experience?" I'll leave the existentialist in me at bay for awhile... Long story short - avoid this place like the plague. I should have believed the bad reviews I read. My stomach has learned its lesson! read more

Like most older Chinese places, they have expanded their menu to include more Asian items-- Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. I'll say the same thing I say to all of them--stop it. Stick to what you do well, pare down the menu, use high quality ingredients and stop buying that frozen heat & serve nonsense. And to the future customers--don't experiment here. Order what you know and order Chinese. BBQ pork- thin, served piping hot from the microwave. Chinese hot mustard is tasty. Hot & sour- the same hot & sour you get in every Chinese place. Orange chicken: cloyingly sweet sauce, at least it tasted like oranges. Chicken pieces deep fried, hard, and bone dry. There's nothing 'spicy' in this dish--and I have a low tolerance for spicy. Fried rice pretty bland and nothing in it. Spring roll smelled like five spice, nice. Happy Family: pleasantly decent. Good fresh vegetables, shrimp was delicious, sauce wasn't too sweet. Steamed white rice was good. I came in once and ordered the Chinese 'pancake' and was treated to a cold tortilla and a lecture about how it absolutely was not a tortilla. I called to get a resolution because of the poor quality of the food and was told that it was fine. Also a manager was to call me back and that call never came. One of Denver's well-kept secrets -- this place has vegetarian chicken & vegetarian beef dishes! Such a rarity in these parts. I've only eaten their food once so far, & took it to go, so I can't comment on the dining-in experience, but so far I was quite pleased with their offerings. Note: I tend to judge all chinese restaurants by their sesame tofu, and I have to say the sesame tofu here was one of the best I've had in a long time. Subtle and flavorful instead of gloppy and syrupy sweet as it is at so many places. I was quite surprised. And the veggie chicken was great. Definitely better than you'd expect when you drive by the place. I can't speak to the meat dishes, but vegetarians/vegans should definitely give this place a shot. They also deliver. My friend and I ordered chinese delivered when we decided we needed good food fast, and neither of us was in the mood to cook. A quick search turned up the Sidewok as close to us. We ordered Cashew chicken and Chiken fried rice, and we were put on hold twice. Then, when the food got here, we found out that there was no Chicken fried rice. They didn't charge us, and maybe we weren't clear enough, but if you are running a delivery service, you should insure your order taker speaks English well enough to not et orders wrong. We were hungry, so we decided to eat what was delivered. Meh, it was okay, but not great. I've only had takeout from SideWok and have enjoyed each meal from here. I usually measure my Chinese restaurants (though they have Thai and some other styles) on their Hot and Sour soup. The Hot and Sour Soup has been really good, with the right amount of spicy and not too thick from tapioca starch. I usually order off-menu and end up with something like a chicken in a black bean sauce and they do a good job of it, adding fresh vegetables. The only time I've actually been into SideWok, a lady was sitting at a table snapping peas so at least I can say their food is fresh. A unique offering here is the vegetarian menu with excellent meat substitutes. I was told they make their own fake meat products and they're really good (I'm saying that as a meat-eater). We finally ordered some delivery from Sidewok recently, and it wasn't very good. I can't in good faith recommend it to anyone based on the experience. We ordered kung pao chicken, mongolian beef, and house special soup. The soup was actually pretty good, but the rest of it fell short. The meat in each of our dishes was just weird tasting, and there was almost none of it in either dish. Texturally, it seemed like it was breaded to add bulk to it in both dishes. I really really hope it was breading and not something else far more disgusting. The mongolian beef tasted like it had taken a bath in black pepper. As far as the kung pao goes, it was full of celery. There were only a couple of pieces of green pepper in there. No spice either. Pretty disappointing overall, and the food didn't really "set" well either, if you know what I mean. On top of all of that, it took over an hour for the delivery to arrive, despite that we are quite close by. The driver called and blamed me for providing the wrong address, which was odd. Finally he showed up and claimed he tried to deliver to the wrong house on a different street. Maybe it was a one-time thing, who knows. We won't have the guts to try again, though. read more

Not because the food is super amazing or because it's the best Chinese I've ever had, I'm giving it four stars, because it is one of the only restaurants that makes their own imitation meat. And not just one of the only Chinese restaurants that makes their own meat but one of the only restaurants (even vegetarian/vegan places) that has such a diverse selection of imitation meat. They have fake chicken, shrimp, salmon, beef, pork, the list goes on and on. The imitation chicken and pork were great! The beef not so much, and I still haven't tried the "shrimp" or "salmon". If you're a vegetarian you will LOVE this place. You'll have some new fake meat dish to try for months! If you're a vegetarian, Sidewok's where it's at. The have a full vegetarian menu, and the woman who served us (I'm assuming she's one of the owners) was exceptional about letting us know which items were vegan (or could be made vegan) or weren't. We ordered a vegetarian chicken entrée and a vegetarian beef entrée, some vegetable egg rolls, and a couple of beers. The egg rolls were the thin-skinned crispy variety (my favourite) and did taste faintly of Chinese five spice (this, I think is what the person was talking about saying they tasted of cinnamon- Chinese cinnamon is a component of that- I thought the seasoning was appropriate and not 'pie spice'. Ha). Our entrées were both large portions and had good flavour, though not particularly spicy. Portion sizes were very generous and left me with plenty of leftovers for lunch (and probably dinner!) the next day. The ambiance within the place is somewhat lacking (it's a very 'mom and pop' family Chinese joint), I'd recommend carryout or delivery if you're in the area, I wouldn't suggest it for a first date or anything. Still, the food made up for the somewhat bland surroundings. Additionally, our bill was around $30 for two entrées, egg rolls, and two beers- so it's really reasonably priced. We'll definitely get vegetarian Chinese from here in future. read more
